Just realized that I can use Veteran Turret Gunner when I use the “Extended” game mode to build my list and not when I use the “Second Edition” mode.
This is strange because that upgrade is for sure in the ship expansions available right now.
Atbthe very least we can at least build squads in “Extended,” but I’d prefer to use “Second Edition” because it actually limits your ships/upgrades to the ones you have in your collection.

Hey guys! I'm a bit late to the conversation here but i'll chip in my experience so far as a new player.

Firstly im one of the guys over at MOTF, we've never played or owned Xwing before and decided to jump into the game just purchasing Xwing 2.0 content only (not extended).

We're following the progress of Luke, whose giving himself the challenge to 'get gud' in 2 months just in time for our Xwing Nationals.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW2CaSp93eQ
I'll let @Captain Weather (Luke) chip in about his experience so far as a new player.

As for me, i'll turn up to a normal store night and practice some Xwing 2.0. Right now the games i find the most fun are against other 2.0 only players, but sometimes i'll come across an upgrade thats in the conversion kit only and think to myself thats something i'd like to have, but have to buy a whole conversion kit for no other reason but just to have that upgrade.

Other extended players are around and would give me list building advice on my Vader + TIE swarm list (thats all i can build) and would say things like 'yeah get a TIE defender, and your list will be great', which is a bit deflating because TIE Defenders technically do not exist for me yet.
We already know our OP event will be extended, but just knowing that there is no way i could compete against other players who have access to ships and cards that i do not is simply quite daunting, and is a major reason i wouldnt personally turn up to an event.
But anyway thats just my experience. I guess people can classify me as a 'beer and pretzels xwing player' because i choose not to invest in a conversion kit and buy 1.0 stuff, but in all honesty if there was a 2.0 limited event only i would try to compete hard in that branch of OP.

I am a new player and Ill admit I'm leery of attending a game night because 1) I only have the new 2.0 stuff, and 2) there would be so many cards/ships I don't know I'd always be like: wait, what does that do again? How did you do that? I'd probably be horrible to play with! lol.
I'm really excited to dive in but also somewhat tentative.

**** right. On Sunday one of the local stores was running a launch event. Someone arrived who had just bought a 2.0 core set and came back to the tables.
’Its ok, I’ll watch for a bit’
Not on my watch! I said, you have time and want a game?
    ’sure’
Well pull up a seat. What you got, just the core? Well what’s your favorite ship or pilot?
10 minutes later I had him set up with Supernatural Luke, Wedge, and Dutch. Loaded out with what I thought was a decent setup (I’m only Imperials so far). I set him up the ships and upgrades, another player gave him the dials and base plates. He had read the rules, so knew the basics, and I coached him through what his ships could do. Taught him very basic things about turn 0 (why his list wanted the large rocks, and spaced out compared to my list). Taught him how to leverage Supernatural Reflexes on Luke to make the most of his agility and repositioning.
and it wasn’t the first time either. Someone comes in, I will always lend them stuff, and coach them as we play, if that’s what they want. In the end he had a good time, and I hope he learned a lot about how to play. And by the end he had started to pick up some of the deeper tactics.
Format is irrelevant, it’s being welcoming to new players hat matters. And by that, I mean you. Yes you.

As one of those new players (well, I had played some 1.0 at the kitchen table, so I'm returning - but new to the idea of trying to playing at the FLGS), I am definitely on the side of thinking I'd be far more comfortable with 2nd edition being the default format. Easier for the store to stock what would sell, easier to grasp the card/pilot/meta complexity, easier to sell a new player on the percieved buy-in. Like the OP, I feel like FFG not emphasizing that mode - it should be the default in the app, the suggested for all events until Wave 2 comes out, etc, is a missed opportunity.

Hey, 99% of players I’ve interacted with are happy to explain things to you, help you understand their list, give you tips on your list, etc. I only played with one friend for ages, and at my first tournament I got my butt kicked hard by 3x ion Defenders because I’d never seen a Defender on the table before (I had only Rebels, my friend had only Scum).

I totally understand your apprehension, but don’t be scared. It’s in the best interest of their gaming community to be friendly to new players, plus I’d like to think people can just be nice sometimes.

In the Nova open speech, Alex said that the majority of competitive events will be the unlimited format, and the new-release-only format (which he called the "limited" format) will be secondary, with a few more casual events but only up to the stores to decide to implement "if they think they need new players."
    I feel like that's backwards.
Like, they should make most events, and all the top tier events 2.0-only to be more fair. But at the low level do whatever you want, including conversions.
People who are "good" practice for top-tier events. So if you make top-tier events new release only, you avoid the NPE of "the good player at the store keeps crushing me with stuff I can't even buy"
I just want people who want to play competitive games to be playing new release only. It's more balanced for one, and it's more accessible and exciting for new players.
If you like B-Wings so much, fly 'em casual. If you want to fly competitive, wait for your B-Wings like everyone else.
My community is mostly dead and the only hope for X-Wing here is to have new players join.
There's a reason I'm posting this here besides just dumping a ****storm. I want FFG and others here to see this because I am an old player, have been playing this game for 5 years, have spent thousands of dollars on stuff and several hundred more on conversions, and yet I'd much rather have a healthy game that new players join than be able to fly all my old ships right away.
I want to tell new players to play X-Wing. I really do. It's a great game. But the $1000 buy-in means I just can't justify telling people to play this game. Moreover, saying "go find all this stuff on eBay" really doesn't build confidence in the game at all.

I give it 18 months. 2.0 is the equivalent of D&D 4th edition - a needed update that was poorly executed and foolishly designed. The problems with the rollout are just the beginning of an exacerbated set of frustrations with the game. Prove me wrong FFG.

For me, in 1st Ed, I stopped using cards entirely and just played with a printout from YASB.  I did this because:
So many cards to play with (upgrade card spam) made packing/setup/cleanup take forever; Lots of cards were errata'd and the printout was at least up to date; The cards weren't so great looking anyway. In 2.0, there are a lot fewer cards on the table, generally speaking, and the ones you do need I think are a lot more visually appealing and usable than the old ones.  So I'm actually switching back to using real cards instead of a printout.
But, YMMV, if you're having fun you're doing it right.
