For all you Mike Nash art haters: Nash is an excellent artist. He has been illustrating LOTR material longer than most of the artists contributing to this game. Though his art is not as realistic as some, he is a master at portraying a whimsical quality in his work which captures the essence of fantasy in general. I don't mind the Treebeard art one bit. You are all, of course, entitled to your opinions, as I am mine. Keep it up Nash!

and still have him enter play exhausted? He would be terrible....
also only one defense for an Ent? A being made of bark and wood? Nope

Completely agree. He is unique so only one in play at a time and enters play exhausted. If they put his cost up it will be devastating. I think alot less people will use him if he costs 5....

As well as this encounter quests/cards are definitely getting harder, especially enemies with their crazy high attack and hitpoints. I think it is totally reasonable for us to have this beasty ally to help us out.
Also nightmare has taken off big time, it looks like they're going to make nightmare versions of almost every quest.... even saga boxes are getting nightmare quests!!!! (nightmare hobbit box) So again I think its reasonable that we have a big awesome ally to help us with these...

Completely agree Bingley. When I saw that Spirit card I thought "who needs Tactics?"
Regarding Treebeard, he might get his twigs clipped before release. I kinda hope so. He represents a significant power jump.

Agree with you there JsBingley, we need more tactics cards that put progress on the quest or give willpower or something like that. I don't want to outright make spirit cards as tactics cards, but the obvious example is to make an event that makes damage on an enemy be placed in the quest as progress instead.

I MUCH prefer Treebeard to OhaUH Gandalf as Gandalf MUST quest as one of his 2 actions. He can't pull double defense duty, or double attack, or defense then attack. He can simply quest and then do one more action. Also he does not stay in play unless you pay 2 threat a turn which can quickly add up. Treebeard stays in play full stop, has more or less the same attack and defense (more hitpoints but 1 less defense) and may quest for less but also helps you pay for more ent allies, unexhaust them or (most powerful) unexhaust himself every 2 turns so that he can perform two actions.
He's miles better as far as I'm concerned.

I remember a while back there were a lot of competitions on some blogs to design Ents, and a typical design feature was entering play exhausted. Seems that the theme fits the mechanic very nicely. I like Treebeard. True, you can play him turn 1 or 2, but he doesn't do anything till turn 2 or 3, so he balances quite a bit. For a lot less than 4 resources you can get 2 points of willpower or 3 points of combat, so losing him for a turn, for 4 resources, is a big hit in my book. Very much a fan of what they've spoiled. Excited to see the cycle now!

I disagree (even if he cost 5 he'd still be good) but how good is Sneak Attack Treebeard... just sayin.Yeah Gandalf is a Wizard but Treebeard is an effing Ent!! And he had 2 less willpower and one less defense so he should definitely cost 4.

It was wise to make him cost 4 not 5. Now he is really playable character. I think they understood their big mess with Radagast and try make new characters more carefull. I like him he is balanced. Of course in my mind is mostly Nmode about normal you will win anyway.....
Yes I believe with a hobbits ents work perfect. Also Hobbit version of Gandalf and words of comand very welcome combo there.
Cool cards we get lot of good news KD Nmode and four cycle is in the way. Game is really cool now cannot wait to play all those amazing cards.

Even if Treebeard is over powered does it harm the game that much? He's only one ally, who is unique, has an initial set back but is then super versatile and powerful. I think we all need and want an OP ally and who better than Treebeard! he will definitely shine in non hasty decks aka turtle decks

Treebeard is amazing. No doubt. I could definitely see a Hobbit Secrecy deck with Ents at some point down the road.

It's sad that Radagast is so crap now. Treebeard is better than Gandalf even.

Treebeard seems a little bit too good. The downside of coming into play exhausted was a good idea. But, I think that he should have had less willpower, attack, defense, or health. If not one of those things, perhaps he should cost 5.

Man it just dawned on me how truly powerful tree beard can be..
For an relatively low-ish cost of 4 neutral you get a 2 willpower 4 attack! 3 defense! 5 hit points! ally that although comes into play exhausted can unexhast itself every second turn (after the turn you play him) and contribute his awesome stats towards two actions!
    Double defense duty..
    Double attack of 4!
    Questing and then defending/attacking once
    Escape test type situations etc
Powerful... Going to be an auto include methinks

Man, Treebeard made me do a double take. I thought I was looking at another spoiled hero, not a massively powerful ally. I couldn't be more excited for that pack. I'm less excited than most for Galadriel, but the ents finally showing up and being so well done (great stats, but enter exhausted) is super cool. Can't wait!

As for the Treeberad art: I do like it. When I read Lord of the Rings it always strikes me how different Ents are from other folk. Their language, their ideas and values, the way they convey thoughts, it is all very unique. From a human perspective Ents are somewhat weird. There is this certain disconnection between Ents and other peoples, as if a barrier that sometimes does not allow for perfect communication and blurs the mutual understanding. And, with all that, to me Treebeard should look weird. He should be twisted, out of this world, treeish. Not just a man dressed for a tree.

The only thing I perhaps dislike about the art are the eyes. "But at the moment the hobbits noted little but the eyes. These deep eyes were now surveying them, slow and solemn, but very penetrating. They were brown, shot with a green light. Often afterwards, Pippin tried to describe his first impression of them". This is completely lost in Mike Nash's vision. But regardless, it is a very nice painting.

And generally, it is good to have diversity in art. Each of the three Ents spoiled so far is quite distinctive. With the Treebeard a bit "weird" or "twisted", the Wandering Ent being a rather standard Ent portrayal, to the Booming Ent which looks almost as from Warhammer (nothing wrong with that).

It is just fun to see different creations. I like it much better than, say, the Woses in Druadan Forest. Do not get me wrong, they were portrayed very well. But they were mostly painted by the same artist. While it adds to the cohesiveness of the set, it would perhaps be nicer to see how also other artists imagine Woses. For instance, you could compare how the Hilderbrand brothers depicted them (http://images6.fanpop.com/image/photos/36800000/Ghan-buri-ghan-with-Rohirrim-by-brothers-Hildebrandt-kacik-rohanskiej-adoracji-36841424-1300-986.jpg). Totally different image. I love when LotR LCG takes me on a trip through re-imaginations of Tolkien's universe. It is a bit a shame to waste an opportunity to showcase various art. Still, I cannot complain. Hell, I even fancy the weird angle on the Seagal Elrond. Perhaps I am too easily pleased.

    Exciting preview as always!!!
I'll start off with the spirit event which as noted above, appears as though it will add damage to enemies based off of progress when questing which is not only just a fantastic fit in regards to the nature of our current Rohan cards, but an amazing card for spirit in general. It's this kind of creativity that really helps the game when we can help cover the weakness of the sphere while still maintaining it's identity. Caleb and co. are remaining true to their word.
The ents are super exciting as well, the art on the booming ent is magnificent and I can see him being quite the powerhouse especially as we gain more ent characters. In that same vein Tree-beard is a great card too. I'll admit I would have preferred him to be a hero but I love that he's neutral and it seems the designers learned for the limited scope of Radaghast. For the two spheres our ent characters represent: tactics and lore, don't really mesh that well but thankfully with Tree beard you can probably get away with only running one of the two spheres provided u get him out early (using Elrond if u go with lore wouldn't hurt either)
They confirm these are the only ents we'll see in the cycle which makes me wonder when we'll see the previously spoiled art for leaf lock from artist Mike Nash. I figured it would be in his cycle but if it's like Gwaihir it may not be till years down the road. Speaking of ent art from Mike Nash, I have nothing against Treebeard's illustration, infact I think he looks quite regal in his own way. The really great booming ent kind of overshadows him however
Will be cool to see the Rohan hero and how he influences the current archetype but we know too little to bother speculating on him (or her) further
(sorry for the typos, doing this from my phone and there will undoubtedly be some)
