Indeed. I'm also more inclined in thinking that these will be extensions and not new factions. The wording and the imagery used is pretty clear, I'd say (if they were to announce a new army, then different faction symbols would have appeared somewhere during the report).

I think it's also a logical marketing move: you first expand what you already have (people buying and playing) and then you eventually (if the line is still selling) a new army. If you go the other way round, you'll end up with people saying "ah, they expanded Daqan / Uthuk. Then I'm sure an exp pack will come for this other army".

For the same reason I don't think we'll ever see another set hosting two factions and working as an alternate to the first one: if they will ever be releasing new armies, we'll see one new faction / expansion.

Just my feelings; but in any case, I do want those **** new boxes, whatever they are!

This is great news for me since the community around here will at last get into this LCG.  The 1st edition, while a great game, was too big to attract new players into it.

The 2nd edition will make our wishes happen!

I'm getting this when it hits the shelves!

I just received a reply from FFG. I took Julia's advice and asked them directly about this. Their reply: "take all instructions literally. When using Yig as the Ancient One, set aside 6 cultist monsters, no more, no less. Any extra cultists will remain in the monster cup. If a cultist is removed from the game board, set it aside unless there are already 6 set aside, in which case, it is returned to the cup."

Personally, I don't have a problem with several spells affecting the magic resistant monsters (like the Poison Mist). First of all, it is a magic resistance, not an immunity. If the monsters were immune to magic, then I'd be surprised if some spells could affect them. And second, some spells can be potent enough to overcome the monster's resistance. It's like you are sitting in a tank - you are pretty much immune to the small arms fire, but it takes just one anti-tank rocket to turn the mobile fortress you're sitting in into a steel coffin.

From a game balance perspective, there is only 1 regular monster and 2 Epic monsters with Magical Resistance, and only 1 of those (Crawling Chaos) actually looks tough, so I don't feel as though making those three monsters harder is a big upset. The number of spells and magical items that grant bonuses is already quite narrow, so also restricting Poison Mists, Banishment and Shrivelling seems perfectly fair to me. But like I say, this is going to be my house rule, unless FFG chooses to errata its definition.

Gorgeous game. Those who say there is no player interaction haven't played with my gaming group. Played an epic game last weekend, some of the rules were a little muddled (the two routes being one of them) but after viewing the tutorial video by FFG it all fell into place. Too bad soo many have already condemned this game out of the gate.

Being a fan of the books and the video game, I couldn't resist when TWAG hit the shelves.  I bought my copy today and cracked open the box this evening.

What a piece of art! Amazing minis, FFG components quality and the 2-book rules that work so well together.  Not much rules for this game but a lot of depth, more than I expected.

I'm really glad I bought this game today and gonna try it saturday during a cool board game day with friends.

For The Witcher fans, this game should already be at arms reach!

    Bern,

good points. I honestly liked the game quite a lot during the beta testing; it's fun fast, really unforgiving in certain situations and it allows different level of play: you can go smooth, or you can bastardly create a lot of troubles to your companions. The dice mechanics are cool, the different decks for each character should grant a) replayability and b) good players will know how to build engines out of the cards. Characters seem to be rather consistent with the lore of the game, in terms that the game could still result appealing for the masses: there's certainly a lot less sex and violence than in the books, but it's still a "dark fantasy" game. This said, it's a game. You could like or hate it, you could desire it were different and you can houserule what you don't like, but everything is there and evident: download the rules, read the reviews, watch the walkthroughs and that's it.

I can't stand what i'm reading about this game over the internet.  Many people say things like "This game should have been more like this" or "It's not what I wanted it to be"..."I've heard rumors that it is not complex"...

****, don't they do your research before buying?!?! If you want oranges and finally buy peaches thinking they were oranges, it's your own fault for not having learned what oranges are in the first place.

It's a simpler adventure game with lots of flavor, not Mage Knight that had a kid with Georges RR Martin

When I want to sit for 6 hours of adventuring I have Mage Knight but for the times I want a shorter yet entertaining adventure game session The Witcher will be my #1 choice.

Oh and BTW I reinstalled The Witcher 2 EE on PC after I got my new GTX 970 and enabled Ubersampling, this game is absolutely gorgeous!

I actually have the opposite experience with SWLCG.  While everyone may be playing the same core 6-8 objective sets, those last 2-4 sets that vary between decks mean that a large portion of the deck ends up being different.

The objective set system does prevent the "I didn't see that one coming" effect a different way though.  If you know the objective sets well enough you'll likely see a card from the surprise set in a discard or edge battle in time to not be caught off guard at an inopportune moment.  I personally see this as a good thing as it's another point where skill/knowledge gives you an advantage.

Don't pay too much attention to all of the complaining on the internet. I personally had more fun at nationals this year than any other tournament and think the game is currently in a very fun place.

If you played casually why did you and your friends bother with metagaming? I can understand wanting to try out something like Dash/Freeholders once for fun if you have never used it. Why, though, would anyone continue to use the meta decks in casual play? Casual is just for fun.

SolennelBern reacted to Lord Kalten in I like the dragon decks, but the expansion isn't always what I want.
Best way, before cutting the rules down is to nominate an administrator.  Anyone who plays with a lot of expansions or in large groups or plays specific expansions that require a bit more effort each turn to do additional tasks will find that the game moves forward a lot faster if specific expansions are managed largely by specific people.

For example, we always have one person drawing out the dragon tokens on behalf of all players and the dragon stuff sits next to him.  He is an expert when there is a need to draw more tokens and to move the king dragon.

You can apply this to managing day and night and with the grim reaper also.

It means one person constantly goes through the motions very fast so there's no umming and ahhing and 'so what is it I do next?'.

If I understand correctly, the set is made of all the expansions you didn't buy two years ago + the Dungeon, which you probably liked.

Yes, but you should be aware of the following facts:

    1) Firelands is an advanced expansion which brings additional danger to the Adventure Card deck. If you mix it with Base + Reaper + Frostmarch + Sacred Pool + Blood Moon you won't be startled, but with only the base game + Reaper you're about to experience a tougher main board than the one you were used to. Without the Highland and the City, your only escape is through the Dungeon (not very viable in the early game) or the mysterious Woodland. So, if you are not up for additional difficulty, perhaps you need one more small expansion.

Hey, don't take me too seriously, I usually play with 3 Adventure card expansions at a time and I enjoy Firelands a lot when it's part of the mix. I like the random outbursts of hardship it generates.

    2) The Woodland looks like an innovative and complex expansion, if compared to the previous ones, especially to the Enemy-filled Dungeon; that's not in terms of obnoxious upkeep, but for all the choices and possibilities it offers with powerful new rewards (Destinies), light/dark fate, fatebound cards, cards with non standard effects, Paths and characters that use tokens. Not sure if this matches your expectations for a "pleasant, random chaotic delirious and pure fun experience".

The Woodland looks very good to me, but it's a long time since I've crossed out Talisman from my list of "beer and pretzels" games.

Firelands has several cards that force you to burn cards from the top of the deck, thus bringing out the Fireproof cards and removing the rest from the game. This counters dilution a bit. However, the more adventure cards you use, the less chance you have to see cards from a specific set. Any card added to the Adventure deck has to get along with this.

I don't know what you mean with "non-Frosty Frostmarch cards". Are you about to trim that expansion theme-wise?

While as unpopular as this is around here, I stand by my groups method: We keep all the sets sorted and add in what we want each game. This adds literally 5 minutes to our break down at the end of the game. In this way you can create a game that highlights the flavor of the game you are going for and doesn't get bogged down with such a random deck with hundreds of cards. Some people like epic randomness of all the expansions combined - and thats great. But our group find the supper stack lopsided and not very balanced. We have found way more re-playability by creating a stronger thematic element when choosing our expansions every game.

We do intend on playing a ridiculous, everything included epic game once we get Forest, but I highly doubt we will do that more that more than once.

Since I LOVE playing groups that others feel are either weak or under the margin...Which faction in this game do you folks think is the weakest?...I have read all sorts of reviews of who people think will -dominate- the game...I'm wondering who you think is going to really SUCK .

Granted, I know that when the different additions to the game come out our critique of the factions will change.

I'm just wondering what you all think of them now...Who is the last in line?
