In Second Edition, you could only level up by selecting +mind, +body, +spirit, +health, or +stamina. All your XP, which is almost all from fights, is just converted to one of these five stat increases. The amount of non-combat encounters is quite small in comparison to the fights.
Third edition has THREE types of XP (combat, exploration, and social). So right off the bat, you have more to the game than just combat. You have combat XP for fighting, social XP for socializing, and exploration XP for exploring. Then, instead of just increasing your stats, you learn skills and abilities that require specific types of XP. Some skills require you to have fighting XP, other skills other types of XP. This means the skills you learn actually reflect the type of adventuring you have done, instead of just dumping generic XP into yet another stat-up. Just like Second Edition, there are skills that, say, add +2 mind, but there are so much more, which will be different every game.
If you think that the character development in third edition has been watered down, I would feel comfortable assuming you never even played third edition!

It's nice to see so much hatred towards a game. I'd be curious to see a game designed by you, if it turns out so much better. Just sayin'.

Saying "no level upgrade, no skill increase" makes me wonder if you've ever played 3rd edition. Sure, it's done differently than in 2nd, but in the end if you say that at the end of Act II characters have not evolved since the beginning, well, probably you missed some points of the general strategy. Same for green encounters. Nothing in 3rd edition has been made "by chance", there are specific designing reasons behind each and every component. You may not like them, of course, but sayin' they are non-existent implies again that your vision of the game is rather limited.

Also, I'd suggest to change your tones. No probs with your opinions, you're free to dislike any game as much as you want, but if you check the forum rules, troll-like behaviours are not, and never have been, welcome on these boards. So, relax. It's a game You don't like it? Then keep playing 2nd edition, or get Mage Knight or whatever game you like the most. One of the great things about our world is that there are other options.

Random too.  But we house ruled one thing, we each pick 2 random Investigators and choose one.  Gives us some choice but still keep the random nature of things.

Same with the AO, we simply pick one at random and cry

I soloed the game a couple of times just to have a feeling of it. It plays great, and you're done in 60 minutes or even less. No probs in resolving combat because all tokens available are open information, so that you can plan in advance how to resolve your attack sequence based on evidence. The only thing needed is that you're honest, so that the monster will actually use its token to damage you, and work against you, but this shouldn't be much of an issue.

There are a few effects (Corbin's special ability, a few cards, but very very very few) that require players interaction, but the game is so rich that when you are in such a situation, you may simply discard the card triggering that effect and draw a replacement. As for Corbin, he's a marvellous hero and his special ability based on challenging other heroes is really rarely used, so, it's not significant either.

Solo is absolutely possible, no probs with that.

I'd expect an enterprising Runebound fan to come up with the simple solution here....a phone app. Type in who your fighting and let the app decide for the monsters.

Nope. You can add it all in. Just make sure you understand the mechanics well. Seeing as how you bought it all together, you might not understand some of the nuances yet, and adding in difficult Ancient Ones or some spells and unique allies/tasks etc could be overwhelming if you aren't a very experienced gamer. Glamours are a new type of spell that act a bit differently than the base game spells.

Also, obviously, the clues that spawn in the Antarctica side board can't spawn there if you aren't using that board, but I just set them aside as i come across them instead of trying to pull them out before the game.

Basically the only reason to NOT include it all would just be to help you learn the game in steps instead of all at once. The cards don't really present any dilution problems or anything like that as far as I'm aware of.

Also, if you're new, I suggest you DON'T start with Yig.

That's OK...I'm working on my own board game set in Mordheim. Adventurers explore and collect wyrdstone. Whoever has the most wyrdstone (victory points) at end of game is the winner. But, my game is going to be called 'Florsheim, Hamlet of the Lost' a game set in the Conflict Mace universe. You know, cause GW likes to sue.

After the unforgivable cancellation of Warhammer:Invasion, best game evah, I was angry at FFG. Went into self imposed hiding. Wandered the wilderness. Wrote FFG over and over in my Book of Grudges. Silently seethed. BUT NOW! now they make the announcement that Fury of Dracula will be brought back as a third edition...and TODAY they announce this! Warhammer Quest as a coop card game. BRILLIANT! I can't wait. Strong work FFG. You're one step closer to having your name erased from the book.

I always wanted this to happen but not sure if it can be done.
Would you like the idea or you already have Blood Bowl Team Manager.

It would be so amazing to have FFG do this.

I have been working on making my own card game for BB.

A Universal BB playmat and 24 Blood Bowl teams,

    Player cards:
Each deck no more than 24 unique player cards for each team/faction

    Neutral cards:
and add to it some neutral cards which they can be hired in any team.
Mercenaries for hire cards to play for your team. (12 cards per deck limit)

    Support cards:
Cheerleaders for each team, Stadium cards for each team giving certain home field advantage but one card for each game.
Coaches, Doctor, TV crew. Fans…(12 cards per deck limit)

    Stadium Cards and Trophy cards:
Stadium cards  (one card limit for each game). one trophy card for each tournament granting unique rewards for participating and awarding points for finishing top 3.

    Star player cards:
self explains (2 cards per deck).

Total cards per deck 50 cards.

I have already made some rough copy of what the cards should be and I made some abilities for each player cards.
    each player card has:
Movement, Offence and defence value`s and the cost to play the card and the special ability text for each card.

It is only 2 player though, 1 vs 1.

I have been playing with these cards with my friends and although they lack any art, we play and have total fun.
I worked on this little over 2+ years.

each game only lasts 15-18 minutes and you can create your own tournament consist of 4 and more teams and have a quick trophy event

do you think I should submit it to FFG or will they laugh at me

SolennelBern got a reaction from VanorDM in To LGS or not to LGS? That is the question.
I tend to buy most of my games at my FLGS because the people there are awesome.  They also freely offer tables, terrain and mats to play our favorite miniature games anytime we want.  They even let us play past the closing hour if one of the employee stays with us, which happen at least 3 evenings a week.

So yeah, to thank them I buy a lot there, even bought the entire Armada Wave 1 from them.

But, I don't feel bad about ordering online, not bad at all.  I must spend around $1500 a year in games and maybe $1000 is spent at my FLGS.  They don't like to hear it but they don't mind when you at least thank them with some purchases.

I might simply go with the base game plus King in Yellow and Dark Pharaoh. Then I will add some big bixes along the way... which might be sooner rather than later lol

Honestly, with some of the fixes and custom herald adaptations, black goat is one of my favorite experiences. Corruptions are just so interesting.  I like my investigators to come in shades of gray. Even just house-ruling that killing Dark Young  or being damaged by them or whatever inflicts a corruption is enough to see a bit more play from me as well.

But yes, to the OP, if you ever just want a little bit of tweaking or just a tad bit more variety in your games without splurging on a brand new purchase, please do conisder the custom creations made by fans. There are some very passionate and talented players for this game.

I'd say it's a fair start Small expansions to be added: the revised Pharaoh, I'd say. Black Goat has problems, and Lurker's fun, but the new gates will replace the old ones (unless you want to play with an expanded gate stack like myself) so that if you want to taste the flavour of the old days, I'd wait on that one

    Good that you're getting Arkham!

The Goat has some very interesting components and concepts, but fails to deliver and suffers from deck dilution problems.

Julia is wise in the ways of Arkham and I agree. But since you've got a bit of experience, (I'm never 100% sure if I agree with the majority who suggest DH as the first big box) I am a HUGE fan of the personal story components found in Innsmouth Horror and might suggest that one instead or as your 2nd big box if you decided to expand again.  Pharaoh is nice because it adds exhibit items and exhibit-related encounters in street areas. I love these mostly because when I get caught in the streets I usually feel like I lost out on a thematic encounter, but with Pharaoh that's not always the case.

But the king in yellow blights/herald is my most commonly used herald. So yeah, that's a great pick.

As for the BGotW being broken... yeah, kinda. But there are fan made versions of the Herald that are better than the original, or you can play with my Church of the Black Goat custom institution to better fix the cult encounters dynamic into the game, if you don't mind playing with custom created stuff
