Which meta plays all maesters? Is it ours?

Completely disagree, and I'm really glad that the really powerful champions cards are all in-House (Blackfish, LS) or are relatively balanced (KotHH). Some of the less popular champions cards (Den of the Wolf, Qhorin) are neutral cards, but forcing champions to make only neutral cards means we'll quickly get more champion cards that hit the restricted list before they are even released. Otherwise it would mean every deck would be running the same grab-bag of neutrals (Val, KL Varys, hmm this sounds familiar...) simply because a player not running these cards would be putting him/herself at a disadvantage before the game even starts. Stark Siege running LS would be bad. Bara Knights running BF would be bad. Keep the in-House cards comin, champs!
I agree 100% What's the fun of making your own card if it can't be awesome? Curious but thought-provoking champion cards just sit in my binder all day anyway.
Blackfish is a great example. He's a little bit over the power level by himself, but he's only going to be near OP in a Tully deck. I think the world champ deserves the right to give a huge boost to their favored subtheme or concept.
When Bandit Lord initially came out, the game was saturated with location hate anyway. But in this environment, everyone would run him, in every deck. FFG just making him house Greyjoy fixed that auto-include problem.

Erwo, we miss you!

Rave - when does your semester end? December? Apparently I have not been in college for quite some time.

Yeah, looks like the 15th of December. For spring, I only have 3 classes I need before transfer to CSUS, so I think I can get them all on a tuesday/thursday schedule (finally!)
Also, my professor says he doesn't expect anyone to attend class the wednesday before thanksgiving, so I'll see you guys then too!
That's good news! I made a maester deck so we can have a link battle next time you come.

Oh, cool. Looking forward to it. Is it Targ maester? (I took the old one apart to end its shame, but I've got a few ideas for a new one)
I just got a ton of new cards, and I'm hungry for some games. Any of you guys want to play tomorrow (today) for a little while? Is GEG even open sundays?

I can NOT make this deck competitive, so I wanted to share a few tricks I'd found to help out other potential clansman players. Maybe in tandem, we can make it a little bit better : )
-Clansman army + Vale Scavenger + High Ground : Pretty good draw engine for you or the opponent (if you need to get your abilities off), painted dogs is the best choice for this b/c they are cost 2.
-Narrow escape + Hidden Vale pass: If you hidden vale pass in a Burned Men, you can narrow escape to try to keep it. If they don't have a paper shield, you win either way. Also if they keep emptying their hand to beat your effects, Narrow Escape is a free recovery from Valar.

I don't have a favorite haracter, however I do really like Jon Snow thus far.
Hooraaayyy for getting back on topic :-)
Yeah, that actually made me laugh.

They have tourney for the hand at my store down here, it's on hold for me until i pick it up thursday.
If somebody hasn't already by then, i'll spoil it on here.

Bronn has always been my favorite. He's definitely underrated, and awfully capable for a sellsword. I think it would be cool to read about his past some more.
Also, he's obviously not at idiot, so I thought it was interesting at (that one part near the end of book 3) where he would've stepped in if the gold was good. I wonder how THAT fight would've gone.

Recently purchased the Core set. Here are a couple of questions that came up after the first round (Stark vs. Lannister):
- (This one is just a rule book question) In the rule book, one of the agenda cards say "if its in Winter....." "If its in Summer.....". I currently only have the core set and do not see this card. How do you know whether it is winter/summer? Is this something that one of the expansions will elaborate on later?
- Are the plot cards shuffled at the beginning of each game and picked in sequential order or does each player get to review the plot cards each time during the plot phase at the beginning of each round. We are thinking the later...
- The Valor Morghulis plot card from the Stark deck is a very destructive card -- When is the recommended time to play this? Does this apply to all players with characters in play or is this just limited to the Stark player. Played late in the game, most of the important Stark characters are in play.
- Is there a list of retailers that sell this game? I have seen the core set at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, however, have never seen any of the expansions sets anywhere other than online.
- Bran Stark (Core Set) has a plot ability to choose and reveal a new plot card. What is the purpose of this ability, especially if I already chose a plot? Is this for my opponent?
1. There are a few cards that create the summer or winter state. Here is an example:
http://agot.dbler.com/index.php?view=card&arsenalid=20353.
-If a card isn't creating "summer" or "winter", don't worry about it.2. You're right. Each player chooses the plot they want to play, and they are all flipped over at the same time. Plots you've already revealed are considered to be in your used plot pile. When you flip over your seventh plot, it becomes the first plot in your used plot pile, and you take the other six back to run through them again.
3. Yeah, everyone in play dies. Also keep in mind, that in constructed decks any house can use this card. (And most do). Not just the Stark deck.
Typically, you want to play Valar in these situations:
-Your opponent is overwhelming you with characters, and you need to even the playing field.
-You have ways to save characters from death, (be it effects or duplicates) and Valar will give you significant character advantage.
-It is your 6th plot. (Unless you are sure you will win 6th turn. NEVER play Valar as your 7th plot. Since you wont have access to it for 6 more turns.)
Even if you don't want to play Valar, some kind of character reset (Wildfire Assault/Threat from the north/Westeros bleeds/ etc.) will really make your life easy, and there aren't too many situations where you don't want to have one.
4. Look up a local hobby store. Places that sell specialty boardgames or miniatures are a good bet. They may have to special order them the first time, but if you get a group going, they might end up stocking it for you
5. Yeah, Bran is weird. The main use I've seen for Bran is a little complicated for a new player, but bear with me.
You are allowed to do what is known as a pre-plot action, which is pretty much triggering any effect that is legal in the plot phase before you actually reveal plots. You can kneel Bran to reveal Valar as a pre-plot action, and then reveal a plot like you normally would. This lets you reset the board, and actually start the challenges phase with better gold and claim.

I'd say the plots that I see used the least are Drunken Allegations, Planning Ahead, Calm Over Westeros, and Power and Wealth.
I dont think I have ever seen Attack From the Sea, Raven's Song, or Promise of Victory used.
Its also been a long time since I've seen Prince That Was Promised or King's Law used, though they are not bad plots.Maester_LUke said:
Frankly I think Snowed Under is playable, though perhaps 4/1/1 it might be seen more frequently.
I actually played this at Gen Con in melee. I was using a Martell deck and it was usually my 2nd or 3rd Round plot; it worked well about half the time, and if nobody knelt out their guys then at least it stalled for a Round, which was important for the deck I was running.
Funny. It's gotta be a meta thing. I see King's Law all the time over here. But yeah, I've never seen Attack from the Sea used either. Even since Westeros Edition, or whenever it was introduced, I guess you could make a case for it though. Raven's Song just seems like a bad plot to me.
-
I've never seen Good for the Gander played, ever. Except when it just came out in the CCG.
I guess nobody plays it because it's not a sure shot.
I like the card though, since it has potential to evolve as the game does. There are pretty obvious trends in the game that you'd be able to pick up on quick, if you have any experience.
-Maester Agenda with no Maester in setup? Herp derp flip GFTG and get a free maester off of At the Gates.
-Pre-plot action? GFTG to make them pay for Rule by Decree. (And not potentially screw yourself, like you might if you played your own.)
-Double Valar on those decks that run a lot of dupes or saves.
I mean, the potential is there. At 4 gold, it's not the end of the world if you don't get anything off of the flip.
It seems a safe bet in multiplayer though. You'll get decent gold, and probably a bargaining chip of some kind.I think it would see more play if it got a solid initiative score. Not even major, maybe something like 4? That way you can use their own Red Wedding against them, or something similar.
~~~~~~~
I agree that Snowed Under could get played with the 4 cost bracket also. Returning a card to the opponent's hand isn't the end of the world, especially when they have some sort of control over what gets returned. Search and Detain has a stronger ability, and good influence score. Even if it doesn't always work out your way.
Guess it's just a victim of power creep. We played with it a little when it came out.
-
Yeah, run a lot of draw, but run draw that goes off in the challenge phase. That way, you still have time to roll them with at least 1 high claim challenge before you draw.
Stuff like insidious ways or qyburns informers is good.
Martell is going to give you a lot of grief by cancelling your challenges, so try to pick up the targ box at some point for paper shield. (This is also good for dissention.)
But yeah, they aren't quite competitive. In my experience, they typically do really well in the beginning, and then lose steam about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through the game.
I don't hate the Maester agenda as it is today. It is a clever idea. Brotherhood agenda and Maester agenda create two very distinct styles of play.
At the start, it was a clever broken idea. But it's been errata'ed to be manageable. Too many agendas are just boring " you lose ____, you get _____", wow, really?
The chains are interesting too, and fit into different decktypes. Steel Link for example seems near worthless in a lot of decks, but in a Greyjoy deck, it's pretty killer. My only gripe is I don' t think being able to make a 48 card deck is good for the game (though I do have a lot of fun with it at present)
This is why I like Damon as designer, he isn't afraid to make wacky stuff like this. I'm stoked to see what is coming in the Lannister box.
-
It really is a lot less efficient. Initiate of the citadel adds another variable to the combo, which means added vulnerability.
-You have to have Robert and the initiate early, which granted, is a lot easier in the 48-50 card maester. But if for whatever reason you don't have the initiate, you need to here to serve to grab it, which is a pretty weak first plot if you're trying to get things rolling (especially when you're searching for a maester that doesn't do anything until dominance)
-Since it's a dominance action, it is vulnerable to rule by decree, (and you might not be playing much first turn if you have to here to serve for a card.)
-Also just an all around weakness to venomous blade, or anything that kneels a character...
If the initiate is disrupted 1 turn, that's a blow. 2 or 3 turns, and that might be game.
~~
Or you just herp derp play Robert or Joffrey in setup or first turn, win a challenge, and you're done. Absolutely zero risk in the old maester decks.
Edit: My bad Ire, I pretty much posted the exact same thing you did.
-
So, my living situation kind of sucks ATM. Anyone going to Cali-Con (at least for the joust) mind if I tag along as ultimate mooch? I'd like to go, but the $ just isn't there for gas or lodgings right now.
-
It does say unique card... you could use it for locations without the fear of a dead card. I'm sure your opponent would appreciate something like Lannisport Brothel or Rhaenys' Hill hanging around for the entire game.
-
I'm not even a Baratheon player, but I really want to see this..
-
Good errata all around. I like that the maester agenda still gets to keep the potential for rush, while eliminating the OP character aspect.
I'm not sad about Martell's changes at all either. Though I like that Prince's Plans didn't end up getting restricted. I think deathbound is an elegant solution.
-
IMHO, this is the most fun mechanic we've had in awhile. Most other decks I've made actually fare better, but I have a lot of fun playing the Brotherhood. What kind of builds are you guys using, and how do you keep the power on the table?
Anyone try out the deck with infamy instead of the Brotherhood agenda? I heard a couple people mention it, but no reports of how it went. It seems like a brotherhood base with a Maester Agenda would draw into the infamy cards really well.
-
I don't think they should be banned because they are un-nedly, there have been a load of un-nedly things in this game.
Here is Queen Cersei's Chambers.
Awesome! That's why I love Sactown. If it was anywhere else, I think this would be a battle of Joffreys and Roberts.
On the next tourney, if you guys can start it at 7:30, I will be able to show.
I get out of my second to last class at 6:50, and I wont mind missing the last class once or twice.
-
Awesome! What was the breakdown? How many maesters?
Cool report. I miss playing this game. It's pretty darn good. Though I wish that Mythic would reincarnate a newer version of DAOC. I founded one of the largest guilds on Pellinor server.
Awesome! I used to love playing DAOC. I didn't really know how to play an MMO back then, but in some ways that made it more fun.
One of my fondest memories was being a newb getting lost in the woods in midgard and running all the way up to the albion border where I was promptly ganked.
I'm not really all that surprised. LOTR is new, AGOT just had a huge resurgence, and nothing is really going on in the Warhammer Fantasy world. (right?)
Plus our board is formal petition central. If I was FFG I would probably ignore us too.
SacTown Mafia... the thread that cannot die!
I don't think I'd be able to play thursday. I can play today, but it would have to be early... I'd have to leave around 5.
