  1.

Has anyone successfully completed A Shadow of the Past with just hobbit decks?

I've tried so hard to build two secrecy decks and to use all the available cards to sneak past the Black Riders but it's simply too difficult. I HAVE been successful doing it on easy mode but I feel that's cheating to a degree and it sticks in my craw.

Are we suffering from what I will call the glaurung effect? That thematic decks using only canon items will not be able to progress?

I hope not, Or I guess, I'm doing the campaign on easy mode, which I notice already would need some errata.

I guess it depends on how strict you want to be. I would consider Aragorn, Sword that Was Broken, Glorfindel, and Asfaloth to be on-theme for some of those quests. With those power cards it should be beatable. But I've never tried completing it with just Hobbits.

I agree completely.  For the next quests I will include such cards to stay as canon as possible.   Building those decks now.

  3. Are you up to date on the cardpool? If so heres what i would consider 3 of the better 2 deck combos.  I'm sure theres plenty out there but these would be my favorite as of recently

    Gandalf-Elrond-Glorfindel + Hobbits

Elladan-Elrohir-(insert tactics or leadership hero of choice here...but i'd suggest Sam or Legolas) + Spirit/Lore deck (Glorfindel, Elrond, Aragorn, Idraen, Haldir, Frodo all good choices here)

    Celeborn-Legolas-Haldir (silvan theme) + Mono-spirit

I do have the cards but not up to date on deck construction at all !

  4. Tried this one YET again last night.

My guys quested for 21 and kept almost all their resources (and I had 2 A Test of Wills in hand) (and Gandalf Destroyed a Druadan Elite as he sneaked in for the quest)

However after some prowls removed 9-11 resources I was bereft. Between the locations and enemies revealed the Druadan were at 36 Threat, and 34 archery.

    I resigned.

If FFG DO read these, Guys let me playtest 4 player for you   MY GOD  you need someone to!!!!!

  5. I'm doing a 4 player quest through all 9 HoN & AtS Cycle.  I remembered how hard this was and set it up in easy mode.

    So,....

After being stripped relentlessly of all their resources Stars in Sky popped out and retracted everyone from the quest. + 23 Threat  Game over Turn 1

(To add insult to injury each Hero had taken 2 damage already from Men in Dark x2)

I will give this one more try but it looks laughably unbalanced as we've discussed.

  6. So Firstly, After making exclusively Dwarf Decks to play through the Hobbit Saga Quests, I resolved to make entirely new decks to get away from that paradigm. Also since The New Cycle would be based around Gondor (This was some months ago) I determined that I would make decks containing NO Dwarf or Hobbit Heroes.

I wanted my friends to be able to pick up and play these decks fairly easily so I created the following

    An Outlands Deck

    An Elrond/Vilya Deck

    An All Tactics Deck

    A Rohan Deck

I recently went back to these and re-tweaked them with all the cards that have come out.

The heroes being used are Aragorn, Boromir, Hurluin (All Leadership)  31

Elrond, Glofindel (Spirit) and Beravor   28

Beregond, Eomer, Hama (All Tactics)   29

Eowyn, Dunhere, (Both Spirit) & Theodred (Leadership) 25

Anyway I am currently going back through the Heirs of Numenor deluxe set quests and laughing at how ridiculously hard the quests are with 4 players.

I challenge anyone to set up a 4 player solo game just to have a look at the difficulty, but mainly this goes out to Glaurung

You have to be consistent in how you place everything. You can see in the photo attached that I have the encounter deck and staging area upper middle and two decks to either side.  Cards in play are vertical to me and my hand(s) are horizontal at the sides of the table

Also certain memory tricks do help, for example characters committed to a quest get tilted 45 degrees, whereas characters exhausted for other reasons get the full 90 degree turn.

Basic sequence of play is plan your turn for 20 minutes, then execute the Quest phase and watch the pandemonium as at least 4 encounter cards hit the table :)

It's a totally different experience  have fun gentleman (and ladies)

  7. I have Elrind and Glorfindel as the basis of one of the 4 decks

You don't actually get much of a chance to play allies Glaurung

    It's all over very quickly

Same goes for Into Ithilien 4 Player

    Just craziness

Do you remember you yourself once talked about playing a 4 player game and you were astounded at how the synergies of the encounter cards could just pile on and defeat you ?

    This is that x 10

However. I can totally see that these quests play very differently in solo

You have a lot more control and not as many encounter deck effects to deal with

  8. Yes you die by the second round most times.  I got to the third round once and thought I was a hero....wrote  a thread on it way back when

It was extremely apparent that the whole heirs of Numenor cycle (including the deluxe base) were not play tested for 4 players at all

    Glaurung,

    Some advice my mate!

When you don't KNOW, don't speak

You look much more intelligent that way. And that advice my friend works in all languages ;)

  9.

So first round 4 harad enemies get added by Treachery. As the only test of will available was already swallowed to stop The Master's malice (I did so to not lose Arwen, So count THAT a lesson learned.)

One of the most rewarding aspects of playing mono-sphere is Master's Malice. It may still sometimes kill an envoy or watchman but in general it has turned from one of the most dreaded to the very most welcomed encounter cards.

The decks I am using are theoretically Mono sphere.

However, the Spirit Rohan Deck uses Theodred and a smattering of cheap Leadership cards to generate resources.

The All leadership deck also has the outlands as its' core mechanic (using Hirluin)

And the Elrond/Vilya deck includes Spirit Glorfindel  to get access to stargazer and test of will etc. And also a couple of high cost allies to spit out using Vilya.

The tactics deck is completely Monosphere.

But unless It is late in the game you're right, Master's Malice won'tr hurt too badly.

  10. I read it as when you draw it from the encounter deck, if you have no active locations at the moment, make West gate the active location and find another location to put in the staging area. You can't choose but are forced to do it like this IF there's no active location when drawn.

    No It's an action.

The way you perceive it would be a Forced effect.

  11. I have read it 3-4 times and actually my mate Davethecop and I listened to the audiobook while we did our Texas roadtrip.

It's TRUE high fantasy,  on the same plateau as the sagas & myths of old    (The intimate study of which Tolkien based much of this milieu upon! )

In direct contrast is the homeliness and identifiable traits of the hobbits and dwarves of his more celebrated works. Ones that an audience can readily identify with.

The characters of the Silmarillion bestride the stage like unto gods (and some actually ARE) Whereas Bilbo, Frodo etc are much like us and as a Literary device the latter is much more successful.
