You can't, by definition, Playfulness Fanning the Flames. If you're making innocuous remarks, then you're not... fanning flames. Doubly so if you're doing it to someone who's of equal or lower status and is therefore, as the Passion itself tells you, not having their flames fanned.

Note that issuing a challenge to someone who's already beaten and battered that they won't be a REAL challenge is, at the very VERY least, poor form. Samurai challenge worthy opponents (like the dangerous samurai who just cut a swathe through your ashigaru) not people who're already down. Doing so is an automatic violation of several Bushido tenets, and you'll be haemorrhaging Honour and Glory by doing so. You're only supposed to challenge UP, not down.
If you've just pushed someone to the ground and challenge them while laughing, that's bad. If you've just been pushed to the ground by someone's who's laughing at you and you challenge them, that's good. It may or may not get you killed, but it's good, because it's proper Bushido.

@omnicroneAir LOOKS bad, because it doesn't bump either Composure or Endurance and it has the worst Kata (it's saving grace is Thunderclap Strike, which is the only Bushi melee AoE and is therefore mandatory if you intend to use Styles to their maximum efficiency; it looks especially bad at the start, because Striking as Air is, well, crap), but it has the best Invocation package, and good-to-great Shuji and Kiho. It also has the utterly fundamental Analyse approach, plus some really good base Opp expenditures (like wall walking for maneuverability).
The REAL issue people have with Air is that you need to play smarter, not harder, because it utterly fails at playing harder.

Counterpoint: Air has the best invocations, so you should most definitely NOT dump it if you're Shugenja. Air stance also functionally reduces all damage you receive by 1, has the only melee AoE, and has good-to-great (but not the best) kiho and shuji.

Note that the rules is that disadvantages list the rings MOST COMMONLY associated with them. As long as they perform the act, feel free to hit them with the disadvantage effects regardless of used ring.

The duel can happen at a later time, but it must happen as the earliest possible time, which will generally be at the challenged earliest convenience. You can't challenge someone and then go, "ooops, I forgot it was laundry day" and never show up again. A challenge is an attack on the challenged's honour, and they will not let that fly.
If you think your lord won't give you permission, then, no, you shouldn't be issuing challenges in the first place. That is, indeed, how it works if you don't want to breach a handful of Bushido tenets right off the bat, plus again later.
I don't know who'd argue that accumulating Strife is a Bushido breach - UNMASKING certainly is, which is why you take Honour/Glory hits when you do. "Being under stress" isn't a breach, and everyone expects you to, anyway. You're just supposed to NOT CRACK under it (in public, anyway, which is why if you manage to Unmask in private you should just lose Honour).

None of those sound like an Unmasking, though, and they're CERTAINLY not a duel (except on the second case, and you should most definitely not be issuing challenges on conditionals - if your opponent accepts on the spot, and then you go ask your lord - which you should do ASAP - and he says "no", you're screwed on so many bushido tenets it isn't even funny)

Yeah, not fighting the duel is... bad. Like, really bad. That's like a bunch Bushido tenets you're failing, right there, and that's not counting the political repercussions.

It does because you hide from one person that has equal or lower Vigilance than your Skulduggery. So the Technique only kicks off from Skulduggery 3+.

No book with me, but if the Kakita ability reads along the lines of "a critical suffered by your opponent" then it's applied last as written anyway, because your opponents don't SUFFER a crit until after they resist.

Rumour spreading, for one, and that targets the LOWEST Vigilance.

EDIT: Also, obligatory reminder that it's entirely possible to win an Intrigue without ever interacting with the opposing party, depending on your goal.

It's adorable that you think your Composure is going to last two rounds in Fire stance and with low Vigilance in court against skilled courtiers, though.

Vigilance is your "not getting shanked by shinobi" stat, so I'm not sure it's possible to OVERRATE IT, anyway.

At which point you take out boars and put in bears. If your argument is "PCs get better once they rank up, and the enemies that challenged them don't challenge them anymore", then yeah, I agree. I'm not throwing run-of-the-mill kobolds at 10th level PCs in D&D, either.

A slight correction to @AK_Aramis explanation: if your armour soaks everything, there's nothing for you to defend against - you don't choose whether to defend or not (by paying a Void) until AFTER the armour soaks.

In most campaigns, sharks won't be making an appearance except as a conversation piece hanging over the fireplace, though.
Sharks get an undeserved bad rep, too - most sharks are just curious about this weird thing in the water and take exploratory bites because they don't have hands. Tap them forcefully on the nose and you're immediately marked as "too much trouble to be worth it, WHATEVER it is." Just endeavor to not look like a seal or sea lion.*

Isn't Fire stance "successes from Strife" only just for bonus successes? Most resist checks (resist criticals comes to mind as the obvious exception) have no use for bonus successes, so that Strife is just... Strife (and damage to the face if you're in Dangerous Terrain).
