    they answered "go for it"

Invisible Sun is a pretentious tire fire of a game. The primary gameplay loop isn't supported by the mechanics, everything is spread out over four books with deliberately poor layout, the mechanics are a balance mess where two stats out of eight are The Best, and the setting is a sophomoric mashup of Planescape and Magic: the Gathering. It's basically a Monte Cook work without any constraints or filters.

I'm... reasonably certain? that "the game" means, well, the game. Like, you make a character and they begin the game with X Void points, no session reset. No wonder I keep seeing posts talking about spending Void points like there's no tomorrow if they get their Void points back, well, "tomorrow".

On the other hand, it's not like any part of the book has been decently proofread, so who knows what they meant?

Apologies. There was a degree of per-session reset in the beta, but it's not there anymore.

If Guarding is something you find yourself using more often than "very rarely", you're going to be getting Crescent Moon Style. You can totally hit them.

I haven't had the chance (and probably won't, **** my gaming group) to get the actual rulebooks of Invisible Sun, but there's  a free 55-page excerpt, and you can also check out the gameplay on Twitch. It seems to be very rules-light and very character-driven.

Bonus successes determine quality above and beyond "normal", which should be TN 2, unless there's some reason why you feel something is particularly hard to make.

The system isn't hard at all, but playing L5R does require you to be more immersed in your character than other RPGs. The Bushido Code is vitally important, and much of it runs against the playstyle of many other, more established systems.
As @Avatar111 points out, it much depends on the type of people that are in your group. For instance, I've been taking a look at Invisible Sun, and it seems amazing, but there's like a total of three people in my group that would enjoy playing it, including me, so it's just another way that bunch found to disappoint me. >_> (and at 250 bucks, it's not really something I can lightly purchase just so I can toy with the system in my head) I know this without needing them to see the game, so maybe you can draw conclusions on whether your group will enjoy L5R the same way.

How do you lose the school ability ? The school ability is meant to help wearing armor.

    cumbersome weapon =/= cumbersome armor

So if running a Hida with a tetsubo you kind of lose the school ability unless you keep swapping weapons in combat? I might have to house rule that. Seems silly since Hida so commonly use the tetsubo.

Note that if you keep it close to the wall, it isn't much more dangerous - the Tainting happens at a low rate, and you can always make a quick trip to the Wall to replenish your jade supplies. The deeper into the Shadowlands you go, the less each jade piece lasts and the more dangerous the enemies should be. Getting near the Pit is pretty much a suicidal mission.

Things have the narrative weight you want to give them. Sure, you can use the Seppun ability and say "I'm going to use that saved success now", or you can use the Seppun ability "Friend-san, according to the charts that put the Monkey in ascendance over the Hare in house of Ebisun, you should perform that action with this slight tweak for greater effect."
The "Striking as X" katas are not, granted, particularly inspiring, but starting at rank 2 you can get your hands on very narrative-spinnable kata.
Except the legacy skill ranks. Those are just yawn.

    No*, no, yes, yes, maybe.

Note that Avatar mistook Water and Air stances in his post.

EDIT: * There's one situation in which this answers is "yes" - if your resistance reduces the damage to 0, then there's nothing for you to be unable to defend against, and therefore you don't get a crit.

yeah, I use the heritage system as a "rough guideline" and just discuss with my player so we come up with something cool, while keeping the powerlevel similar to the "better" options of the heritage tables.
mechanically of course, because lore wise, a lot of them are good.

edit: not every title should be available, but a few can be, I think.

Honestly, I was kind of surprised not to see new options for question 18 in Emerald Empire - you'd imagine some Imperial Family - specific ones might be interesting.
I guess that the sort of title you can justify handing to a starting character are the sort of thing you wouldn't really be inheriting, but I'd agree that titles are the one thing you can't currently get from a heritage result (I think every other skill category is covered, and techniques, items, ring changes, honour/glory and status are all up for grabs)
A Veteran Samurai campaign does start you with a title, but that's for 50XP characters and whilst handing them the Clan Magistrate title or whatever seems fine, it doesn't really translate across to stuff which should be available to 0XP starter characters.

yeah, the samurai heritage table is a bit of a wasted opportunity for "cool" stuff, at least some of its options.

So far, I let my player come up with something interesting, mostly toying with either a special item, technique, or the +10 status, which we reflavor a bit to fit the characters.
Probably some Titles could be good handouts too.

This seems like a complete waste - if you're going to pick one of those options, what you want to get out of it is either a kiho or an invocation, whichever you can't buy normally through your school or a really good one if you're a bushi (Yari of Air rocks, for example, and since you're only ever using one kiho you can get one with a general usefulness enhancement effect like, say, getting Earth Needs No Eyes and tell sneaks and half of the courtiers to go jump off the nearest cliff forever), not "and here's something I could've just gotten with a few xp anyway".

But, hey, at least it isn't as bad as getting the rank 1 Ninjutsu/Maho, which should be stricken from the table forever.

Off the top of my head, there's at least TWO things you can do with your Opps to lower the TN of your action: Open Hand Style can switch someone out of Air stance, and Water's "X Strike" kata can be used to remove Dazed from yourself, if you have it.
