Ahdiomer got a reaction from Kiso in Tokens, counters, dice - what player aids/gadgets do you find useful?
I had the same idea and went to work, using gareth_lazelle's symbol font, blank dice and stickers. For the sixth side I chose the Clan Mon.
I like the result and will try them next week.

Ahdiomer reacted to klatschi0212 in Overview of Techniques
Hey forums,
I couldn't find a brief overview of all techniques, so I started one myself. The idea was to give it to my players, so they would know where to find that sweet technique they all crave for (only I own all books). I figured that it could be useful for you as well.
The spreadsheet is by no means perfect, especially the short description of the effects is not ideal. However, I think it's enough to get a grasp of what the technique's about and read afterwards. Didn't want to be too specific because of copyright.

Have fun!
PS: Path of Waves is not included yet. I've received my book last week and hadn't had time to go through it all 🙂

Ahdiomer reacted to sndwurks in Index of Clans / Families / Schools / Titles
I know copies of Path of Waves have already been spotted in the wild, and that people who direct pre-ordered it from FFG have already received their copies. I will be buying mine from my FLGS (SUPPORT YOUR FLGS!) on Friday, and I will hopefully be able to get this Index updated over the weekend.

Ahdiomer reacted to Harzerkatze in Disappointed in the system after reading Genesys core rule book
My mistake, I may have misinterpreted "It is messy (read; weak af), unless you disregard most rules, just eyeball everything, and play a more RP drama type of game."
Or perhaps it was "The rules are good if you like to unmask while kissing a girl you should not. Do not look further!"

I have had Avatar on mute for a while, since I came to the conclusion that their and my views of the game were so divergent that we couldn't actually discuss anything worthwhile with each other. I recommend this approach.

Ahdiomer reacted to DGLaderoute in 'The Promise'
I think you got that wrong way around...? Shiba was the one who knelt to, and therefore humbled himself, before Isawa. That's why "The Promise" exists to the present, with the Shiba generally subservient to the Isawa.
As for vassal families of the two...huh. My (non-canonical!) take is that the vassal families would also be bound by the Promise. I can't see a vassal family not being subject to anything their patron family is. The Kaito, though, are no longer a vassal family, so the Promise would no longer apply to them, unless it was specifically meant to remain in place--in which case, the family's "charter", or whatever documentation codifies their new status in the clan, would specify it. I guess we don't specifically know that (at least, yet), so we should probably assume the Promise doesn't apply to the Kaito. Again, this is my take...don't take it as canon unless you see something in actual canonical writing.

Ahdiomer reacted to Kaiju in Shikigami mechanics. This is broken by RAW
Look, I realize you draw a lot of satisfaction from your incessant whining, but other than you, I dont see anybody anywhere , including my own table and one I have friends in, having these problems and hating the game for it.
I dont know what you compare it to, we ve had this conversation elsewhere, but I am comparing it to other current RPG rulesets, and its pretty much in the middle of those. Some are mechanically more robust, some are less. Since you seem to be mostly entertained my whining about the same thing, for months now, in every possible thread, without actually ever offering much to the discussion but constant bashing of a product you do not enjoy, I am simply discarding your opinion at this point. You got the biggest chip on your shoulder of everyone here. Its not everyone ELSE being wrong by defending an indefensible product.
Or your GM is simply bad. Bad GMs create bad experiences. I am starting to suspect that might be the problem. For example, you still dont know how to handle Mr. High-Earth-Hida, and your answers have made it abundantly clear you dont really grasp how encounter design works, instead always going for the argumentative extreme. And if you care to recall, there are solutions to said Hida that have nothing to do with ignoring armor. Last but not least, you argue with a PvP perspective. Again, if your GM is big on PvP, he is probably not well suited for tabletop RPGs, and you d all be better off with the tighter rulesets of boardgames or tabletop strategy.
You want garbage rules? I present to you DnD 3.0, the entire WH40k line by FFG, Star Wars D20 and Iron Kingdoms. L5R problems PALE in comparison, as these systems produce overpowered insane combos by ACCIDENT, whereas in L5R you have to at least try.
But i am tiring of this. If you cant add anything to the discussion except "its OP, its trash, as is the entire game" for 50+ posts, it would be the wise thing to do and remain silent.
Btw, your answer shows you havent the grasp of the rules that you seem to think you have, AGAIN. Acquisition of items is a downtime action. Taking a shikigami out of your pocket is an action, meaning unless you are in water stance, thats the only thing you do, at which point everyone is free to shoot/burn/hit/spellcast on the shikigami for an entire round. Not to mention pocket-sized paper shikigami are quite limited in what they could do.

I plan to use the unmarked map when I run that adventure.
Thank you for the write-ups and the interesting character descriptions.

So - we had the first session, which actually completed the Topaz Championship.
The eventual Topaz Champion was Bayushi Mei Lin - much to the annoyance of the players. They all passed, and creditably so - Hida Goriate managing to accrue enough points on the first day alone to graduate. The brawl at the poisoned water sake house was good fun - Kaito Horonigai having to spend most of it watching Hitoshi's back (they were convinced it was an attempt to bushwhack the Mantis contestant) took some of the fun out of it, but Mirumoto Hinata and the player character Mirumoto Uiri made good use of a convenient bamboo table that Goriate had broken in an overenthusiastic swing, and wielding two chair legs each as improvised bokken proceeded to take out a fair chunk of the ruffians. Hida Goriate also found himself playing bodyguard to the martially less-than-gifted Yasuki Jun, who repaid him before the second day by helping him repair the damage to his travelling clothes (he took the only critical of the fight, which at 0 severity should have been no big deal in terms of injury but in terms of ruining "my finest tunic" the day before being presented to Kakita Toshimoko himself was arguably worse than a knife to the guts......) The second day was very good - with a slight change to the published order of events, so that the last event was the Archery (which Hitoshi of course had to win to succeed at). This resulted in a fair amount of internal wrangling for Kaito Horonigai, since this was her best event, and - rolling void (her best ring, as well as the instructors' preferred approach) she netted three explosive successes. Knowing that she could have - and should have - beaten Hitoshi easily but couldn't was frustrating as anything... They managed to get Hitoshi out of the duel against Kakita Toshimoko, and were feeling rather sympathetic that he was given no chance to present his gift (they eventually took it 'on his behalf' when one of them went to speak to the sensei to try and smooth matters over). In the iai tournament, Kaito Horonigai managed to rush in and staunch the bleeding after Kakita Riku nearly sliced his ribcage open with the "fake" sword*, then the three of them followed Kitsuki Yuikikimi in the chase. They managed to dispose of the ronin in fair fight, and Hida Goriate incapacitated Bayushi Sugai personally. They weren't expecting to see Agasha Sumiko and were very surprised (but very happy) at the offer of joining the Emerald Magistrature. After saving Hitoshi's life twice and Kakita Riku's once, they rather hope to run across their peers from the tournament in later adventures (specifically Dark Tides). I'm tempted to make Doji Hiroka (the 'quest-setting' character in Slow Tide Harbour) Kakita Riku, and have Otomo Hiroshige be a vague relative of hers that the family is trying to find. There's no particular reason that I can see in the story Dark Tides that the fact that Doji Hiroshige is really Otomo Hiroshige actually matters; even as a Doji who's a close relative of the ruling family he's still massively important and justifies calling in favours from the Emerald Magistrates to find....
* Okay....it was a real sword. But the actual weapon was supposed to be a bokken. So it was fake, even though it was real. Confused? You should have heard them trying to explain it to Toshimoko. Fortunately, the Grey Crane interrupted Riku's seppuku as soon as they burst back into the academy yelling 'stop!', then tried to figure out what the heck they were babbling about, rather than the other way around.

Ahdiomer reacted to Kaiju in Shikigami
Dude, just make peace with the fact that pen+paper RPGs have to accommodate a much wider range of situations (near infinite) than any other game, and cannot be mechanically complex to the point of there not being any misunderstandings. I ve played RPGs for 25 years now, and the current L5R is in the upper third in terms of rules quality and loophole scarcity. At some point, you simply need the GM to cover some of these interactions.
Yes the system has its flaws and omissions, but I am not sure what your background is in terms of rules quality. I played all the big systems and plenty of smaller ones, and the only ones I vouch for as being mechanically better made are the new Modiphius systems - and a huge criticism of these is exactly that: People feel they are lifeless mechanics akin to a boardgame, lacking in flavor and style.
L5R 5th is without doubt the best-working L5R ruleset so far, easiest to remedy and adjucate, and allows for the widest range of mechanically supported tactics and playstyles. Just have your GM (or yourself, if you are stuck with the task) put a limit to obvious cheese.
And be glad we are not talking about immortal kobold sorcerors, bugbears with whips and bags full of rats, unkillable jedi cyborgs with 4 meter lightsaber blades, infinite-loop attack bushi, wild west card mages who instant kill anything in the entire game just by touching it or cybernetically enhanced thugs who can shoot an entire clip, reload, and empty it again before anyone even got to take an action.

Ahdiomer reacted to Kaiju in Will we get Second City ?
I ll say that while the box set as a product was quite nice, the background lore and reasoning behind this was horrendously bad, and a large contributor to the decline of L5R brand in general, ending up with it being bought out by FFG for, probably, not a whole lot.
The core concept of L5R is a "frozen in time" culture, supposedly few if any changes happened in hundreds of years of history, and the rest of the world didnt advance either. Messing with that is going to disappoint more than you ll ever make happy.
