Yes, the player as well as I recognize that dreadnoughts are only used in the most extreme of circumstances.
By the time it comes to making the character a dreadnought, we'll have something. I'm an Iron Priest, taking care of dreadnoughts is my responsibility... I'm sure I'll figure something out. The whole point of making the dreadnought is so my friend could... PLAY A DREADNOUGHT and **** heretics for the Emperor!
We also are in a strange campaign where we are with other non-space marine folks and we're lost in space, cut off from the Imperium, caught between the Eldar army, a group of Tau and a Tyranid invasion. Even becoming a dreadnought depends on where we go in our adventure, but if the opportunity presents itself, I'm sure I'll think of something for the RP aspect of it.

Thank you, everyone, for all the suggestions.
In our first session we used the Dawn of War II OST and it was suitably epic. I'm trying to shy away from straight up metal because, while I am a big fan, most everyone else in the group is not. We also have the Mass Effect OSTs and actually the Blade Runner OST for the slow, creepy, investigation bits.

Have you ever had a cool fight or even just a turn that went well? TELL US ABOUT IT! I like hearing about cool stuff that happens in groups.
Just to get us started:
So my group just started playing an amalgam of DH, RT, and DW. Some Inquisitors were doing Imperium business in a small outpost on a desert planet. At the same time, a Rogue Trader was conducting some... questionable transactions at the same outpost when suddenly the sky blacked out and tyranids launched a planet-wide attack. Meanwhile, a battle barge filled with space marines on their way to train and join the Deathwatch received several distress calls from the planet and sent out all their Kill-teams to anywhere that wasn't completely overrun with 'Nids. My Kill-team was sent out to the same outpost as the Inquisitors and the Rogue Trader. Hordes, Warriors and Termagants assaulted the base. When most of the Xenos scum was destroyed, a gunship finally showed up to extract any survivors when suddenly a group of gene-stealers burrowed out of the ground. Nothing we couldn't deal with. Then we heard a horrible screaming sound from beyond the wall and a great pounding upon the barricaded door of the outpost. The human characters turned and looked in horror as a Carnifex ripped the door from it's extra-armored hinges. The Sister of Battle turned her flamer upon the gene-stealers and destroyed all but one of them. In one swift movement, I (a Space Wolf Iron Priest) turned to face the Carnifex, let loose a hail of heavy bolter fire on it while my Servo-Arm wretched behind me and crushed the head of the gene-stealer. The Dark Angel Librarian charged the Carnifex and missed with a swing of his power sword as the Carnifex counter-attacked and ripped the Librarian in half and threw him aside. Seeing his Battle-Brother cleaved in twain, the Assault Marine, also a Space Wolf, ignited his jump pack, launching himself over the wall of the outpost while I, the Sister of Battle and an Imperial Fist Apothecary laid down suppressing fire upon the Carnifex. Sudden, from the gunship, a blast of psy-power from one of the Inquisitors rocked the Carnifex, stunning him and allowing the Assault Marine time to grab our fallen Battle-Brother and jump pack to the gunship. With our fellow marine safely aboard the escape ship, the rest of our Kill-team and the Sister of Battle boarded the ship and rocketed into orbit as the Carnifex regained consciousness. Breaking the planet's atmosphere, the group found the marine's battle barge being ripped in half by a planet sized tyranid. Searching the space battle for a sign of any working ship, the group spotted a mining vessel heading away from the battle. We hailed the ship, but were met only with contempt and disrespect even after they were made aware of the Inquisitor's presence and were threatened with excommunication. Seeing as it was the only ship we found that was still working, we decided to blast our way into the ship's docking bay and have a chat with the heretics who didn't see fit to help the Imperium.
I think it was a fun first night.

I ended up talking to my GM and with my group's Assault Marine and they were both down for the idea, so we concocted a plan to be executed eventually.
The Assault Marine and I, a Techmarine, are Space Wolves and we thought it would be AWESOME if one day I use my Servo-Arm to hurl my Battle-Brother towards the enemy and in mid-air he will ignite his jump pack, going the extra distance and wreaking awesome havoc.

In case anyone was wondering what the stats for facing a Dreadnought would be (I made them up on the spot last session):
I combined the armor, structure points, etc. from a Rhino APC (Armor 25, 25, 20 with 25 SP) from Into the Storm with the Long Barreled Twin-Linked Autocannons (4D10 + 5, Pen 4 I think?) from the Gunship in the same book.
That combined with a Dreadnought Close Combat Thunderhammer (4D10 + 10, Pen 10, Power Field) and it was a rough encounter for them. The Khonite Dreadnought had Lightning Attack and could make 2 Full Auto shots with the Twin-Linked Autocannons each round (If I remember correctly it was S/2/4).
For stats, I just used the Elite Chaos Space Marine detailed in the Deathwatch Rulebook.
Did you have him have Toughness as standard for damage reduction purposes? As I have come to understand, usually when some one is put in Dreadnought armor, they are beyond repair/have very little of their body remaining. Just wondering if you took that into account.
Sounds like a good Dreadnought, though. I'll have to mention it to our GM.

Do you normally use music as a mood setter when playing RPGs? My D&D group does this with epic, fantasy inspired stuff (like Castlevania and God of War OSTs), but my 40K group doesn't as much. I'd like to suggest some music to our GM, but I don't know where to start.
tl;dr Do you use music with DW? If so, what?

Not aerodynamic? True, but I'm glad I found this thread because my GM will totally go for this because it could be awesome.
We are all about the rule of cool, scene points and go epic or go home.

So they cannot throw Rhinos with their bare hands, but what about the Techmarine's servo arm? It has a Strength of 75 with Unnatural Toughness.
Could they launch a fellow Battle-Brother or transportation unit?

I just ordered my Iron Priest figure the other day. When it gets in and I paint it up I'll totally post it here.
SO EXCITED!

Hail, Battle-Brothers!
In my group there are two Space Wolves. My friend, Matt, is an Assault Marine who fires a lascannon and then jump packs into the fray with a chainsword and I am a mostly machine Iron Priest with a heavy bolter and a pet Fenrisian Wolf. Matt is all into ridiculous, up-close, crazy heroic battle and he's already planning on dying in the most glorious way possible and we haven't actually started playing the game yet. He REALLY likes Dreadnoughts so we talked to our GM to see if there is anything he can plan for. Our GM thought about it and said if he died awesomely and we were high enough in ranks, he would figure something out.
So...
Q1: Is this awesome?
Q2: How would we go about making him a Dreadnought character, crunch-wise? A suit of armor with modified abilities and special weapons sounds OK. What would you suggest?

Like a True space wolf. We do not fight allies while the enemy is near. Not like that cowardly Primach of the Dark Angels.
But in truth I have always seen the duels (from the space wolf side at least) as more brotherly in nature. I will ways try to out do you. Also only I can punch you in the face, and those chaos scum and xenos better think twice before they try to harm them. After all its Brother against brother, brothers against cousins, and the whole **** family against anyone else.
This is how I've always seen it. It used to be bitter hatred, but it has boiled down to little more than brotherly competition.

I'm working on a Space Wolf Iron Priest (techmarine) right now for my group's upcoming game. I'm pretty pumped about everything. It will be interesting playing a chapter that favors up-close and personal violence as well as a character who is extremely ranged/intelligence based.
Anybody else playing an Iron Priest?

Where/how do they holster them?

In the Space Wolves Omnibus I've been reading, they mention that they carry some guns on slings.
Also, maglocks.
