Yeah you either like Lovecraft's style of writing or you don't, I never found it dry, don't think Ive ever read a bad Lovecraft story, the first one I ever read was The Outsider, and my jaw literally drooped at the climax, the only other writer, not that Ive read many, to effect me in that way is Philip K. ****

No place to wear it here in Florida, but love to have it

I often wondered how Lovecraft would have felt about Derleth's attempt to force a Christian moralistic framework upon his mythos, so called. Especially when you consider Lovecraft's hatred (really) for religion, particularly the Judeo-Christian ethic. As outlined in his "The Judaeo-Christian mythology is NOT TRUE" letter -
I don't think special effects should even come into making a Lovecraft story into a film, the problem with many adaptations is they try to show too much of the creature, Lovecraft never really gave great detail of many of his creatures. The point therefore would be to keep the effects to a minimum and not show a whole lot of the creatures, thereby truly being faithful to Lovecraft's mythos, I see the problem is in the minds of the film maker of today where you have to show everything, and as a result the works of Lovecraft become so overwhelming to turn into a successful film, people don't want you to merely suggest things in movies, they want their summer action adventure blockbusters.

I am planning on writing an extended paper or perhaps a complete book dedicated to Gnostic religious themes within the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Right now I'm in the middle of reading all of his stories and making notes, Ill post what I write here in case anyone is interested. There are many interesting parallels not only in his writings but in his life also, his experiences in the real world definitely manifested in his writings, so the paper/book will deal with also, not just themes in his stories but his life, already you have a very odd similarity with the gnostic creation myth. The feminine aspect of the divine gives birth to an "abortion" which she sees as a hideous being with the body of a snake and the head of a lion, repulsed by it, she casts it away from herself. This being then creates other beings to help him govern the universe, he then creates the world and human beings and puts his own thoughts into its design, but the beings who inhabit the world are ignorant. It goes on from there but, its interesting that Lovecraft's own mother once told a relative that she thought her son was ugly and hideous looking, of course Lovecraft himself goes on to create "other beings", he creates a world (or worlds) inhabited by creatures that are just as ignorant and abhorrent, who constantly strive for hidden knowledge, against the Demiurge and his "arhcons" (Lovecraft's creatures). In an odd way Lovecraft is himself a representation of the Demiurge. Thats just one interesting instance of the applicability of Lovecraft's writings with the mythological motifs of Gnosticism, which of course I will give a brief descriptions of in the finished work. No doubt this will spark some debate when finished Hail Cthulhu

Oh I plan on gathering a bunch of reference material the first few times I play, Ill probably have the 9 video series on youtube playing in the background, the manual, the phase sheets, the board game playing aid etc. Where are these two stores that you were talking about? That would be great, to see people actually playing the game, probably the best way to learn some of it. I'm not up on role playing, what exactly does it involve? Hail Cthulhu -

I'm here in Davie Sorry I have never role played before, in fact I haven't even played Arkham Horror yet, just ordered it yesterday, and it is the first of this type of game that I have ever played. Lovecraft is my favorite writer and I wish I had discovered this game years ago. -
I just ordered Arkham Horror yesterday, I'm excited and a bit threatened by the difficulty of the rules and game play, this will be my first experience with this type of game. The only board games I have ever really played are things like say Monopoly Any words of wisdom

****, wish I would have known of that site -
Cool cant have too many Lovecraft inspired games I dont have any, just bought Arkham Horror, this sounds cool, wouldnt mind getting it some day Reminds me of the old Dungeons and Dragon books, where it say "go to this page to do this" or "go to this page to do that" and depending on which page you choose you go on a different quest. I actually made an online version of this many years ago
