Thanks to you for the reference, Dadajef !

Interesting....I would have forgotten that card, or how useful it can be.
If I understand it's wording, however, it's only weakness is that you have to have MORE Combat Icons than the target has skill....you cannot simply "tie" them....which means you need to use this on a character with at least 1-Combat already, I would think (which IS - admittedly - almost every Agency character)....so they get 2-Combat Icons...this then allows you to wound Skill-1 guys. But, as you noted, you need something to boost you up in combat Icons, to increase the range of potential victims for the Prize Pistols, no ?
Other than Beneath the Burning Sun, what other "Combat boosters" are there for Agency ? - Lightning Gun is one, but that's only +1 Combat (and if you are focused on Wounding guys with the pistol, the extra Combat Struggles it causes are not quite as useful).
Dream dagger could work on a Dreamer, I think....that adds 2-Combat for just 1-resource point....(in addition to the other stuff you gain from it if the character is a Dreamer).
In theory, a starting hand of Herman Mulder (he might actually be good because of Cost-1 !!) ...Prize Pistol...and a Lightning Gun could result in you laying down all three and having Herman with 3-Combat Icons....meaning Skill 1 and 2 enemies are targetable right away with the Prize Pistol effect !
I'm sure there might be other, better, ways to do this that I am just not thinking of.

So you're saying Tokuah still has a chance at sanity ?

-
Yeah, when I add up my stacks of cards (various factions) which I've managed to pick up the last few months since learning of and loving the game....I am amazed that the "Neutral Stack" is nearly DOUBLE the size/height of any single other faction I have. So seeing less of them would be a good thing...they should be "supporting cards" - but instead they ended up being (in terms of numbers) bigger than any other single faction, by a good margin.
In fact, raw facts according to DBLER site:
Total Cards in Database:
AGENCY- 64
MISKATONIC- 67
HASTUR- 68
CTHULHU- 65
SYNDICATE- 67
YOG-SOTHOTH- 65
SHUB-NIGGURATH- 66
NEUTRAL- 124 !!!
-
How did you (Hellfury) know Tiziano is Italian ? Is that common knowledge around the forum, or something ? - also, great art on the card, I have to say.
-
You may not restore yourself either (Victoria's Loft is in play) ! - ha !
Seriously though, this card has been of interest to me since Hastur typically has crap-all for Combat, so even 1-measly icon is nice...plus the ability is pretty awesome in the early (or late) game. Also...consider combos with Demon Lover... "Until the end of phase, that (targeted) character gets -2 skill".
Now suddenly, with just 1-DLover in play (and Dangerous Inmate), you can drive insane even enemy 4-Skill characters. This expands its utility a great deal, I'd say. Although it would require a pretty unbelievable combo
...consider this:You have in play: Dangerous Inmate, Demon Lover, Demon Lover, Demon lover, and you have a Sirens of Hell and Scotophobia in your hand.
Opponent has in play: Cthulhu and some other scrubs.
On your turn you play Scotophobia. Until the end of your Ops phase, all enemies lose their printed Terror Icons (meaning they can be driven insane).
You then exhaust the three Demon Lovers, targeting Cthulhu...to reduce his skill from 8 - to 2... (-6 penalties from the Demon Lovers).
Now, being a 2-skill character, Dangerous Inmate can target him with his insanity effect !
You drive D-Inmate Insane, to target Cthulhu (now without his Terror Icons from the Scotophobia) and drive him Insane ! Then play the 0-cost Sirens of Hell....and destroy Cthulhu !
Okay...granted it is a ridiculously complex combo....but I mention it just to illustrate the lengths to which Dangerous Inmate could be handy to have around, even in difficult situations like staring down a Great Old One.

Hi guys !
This morning I was considering an interesting discussion topic for us. What would be (in the current CoC environment with all the released cards to date), the most powerful / deadly combination of cards for someone going for a straight "Character Destruction" (or other permanents like Support / Location/ etc - cards) theme.
The primary concept, I would think, would involve Agency and Cthulhu....perhaps also combining Yog-Sothoth, which has its own share of Sacrifice effects (like Cursed Skull or A Single Glimpse). The only thing is.... are Tri-Faction decks actually viable in the game ? I have not tried anything beyond 2 yet, so I am unsure of the consistency with resources, etc - when you open a deck up to 3-different factions.
I'll start off a list of some cards I can think of that would fit the basic role of character destruction (or others) and if you guys can think of some others I haven't, and/or provide some ideas for how you would fit these things into a deck (you'd need SOME characters of your own, of course - though I'm thinking quick / fast guys would be best - maybe others think elsewise ?).
AGENCY-Destruction Cards
- Small Price to Pay, Shotgun Blast, Short Fuse, Flanking Maneuver, Torch the Joint
* - possible supporting cards: Beneath the Burning Sun, Shotgun, Dynamite
CTHULHU-Destruction Cards
- Deep One Assault
, Pulled Under, Sacrificial Offerings, In an Unmarked Grave, Get it Off!* - possible things in the similiar or supporting theme: Called by Azathoth, Bite Marks (put Bite Marks on a 6-Wound Hideous Guardian, then Shotgun blast him, etc - things like that...I mention it only because it could support the them, though cleary just DOA'ing such a creature would be easiest !).
YOG-SOTHOTH Destruction Cards
- A Single Glimpse, Calling Down the Ancients, Cursed Skull
---------------------
A few Characters that would also work for the "Destruction Theme" would be Deep One Rising ...Ravager from the Deep, Mature Deep One, Emerging Deep One (sort of), Cthulhu, Lord of R'lyeh, Thomas Malone, Monster Hunter, and Agency Groundskeeper.
-
Ahh, of course you are right (3-of name, regardless of other sub-text - like Hastur, King in Yellow // Hastur, Lord of Carcosa). Still....like, the Neutral Julia....how many times would you find yourself in a situation where 2-3 characters are Insane....at the same moment....so she even benefits all that much from that ability ? A minor 1-skill increase (the most likely I would think) - is hardly worth it....no ?
-
There is something deeply disturbing about that image....I kept watching it for over a minute.....and it's just.....creepy......as it is a portent of what the world would be like (perhaps) if Cthulhu and his foul brethren ever truly awoke..... scary !

-
- Just as the title says....I will pay 30-$+ per box of this AP, if anyone has it. I desperately want some Called by Azathoth's and Spawn of the Sleeper's - cards ! Anyone that has any of this AP, please reply and let me know and maybe we can make out a deal via Paypal, etc. . .
-
Okay....I'll have to play it like that in the future, then. The main reason it seemed a bit powerful if I did it as I had been is ....
Pay - 2... Sacrificial Offerings. Pay-1... Sac Cursed Skull that was in play.... Pay-3 at last Domain to play Speak to the Dead....place SttD in the Discard and then flip off another 4-cards. Now pick up ...say Deep One Assault - AND SttD again and put them in your hand.
Next turn.... DOA something... play SttD again. Pick up DOA and the SttD again, or something else. Basically, you go through your deck in like 4 turns....lol... pretty powerful / OP'd - I guess.
Though...with three in my deck, eventually it doesn't matter since you can just pick one of the SttD's that are "legitimately" already in your discard when you play the 2nd or 3rd copy that you have in your hand....
It's an awesome card though - love it !
-
No, that sounds right - Professor ...
...Gosh Professor ! .... Goll-Y Professor ! - this whole thing makes me think fondly of Gilligan and The Skipper - lol

It would only make sense that when she appears, it is "exhausted" because you have to exhaust to "commit to a story" - UNLESS there is some special effect going on, or wording on the card that, "This card does not exhaust to commit to stories....EVER." - that would be funny if FFG or any other card-game companies would ever write their rules in that "perfectly clear" type of lingo, eh ?
I still think she sucks...and I can't figure out how one would want to use her (Amphib Julia) .... maybe if I got a good look at the other versions of her....I dunno....I guess they intended for you to have ...what...3-copies of each in your deck....and then play off their switching abilities ? How might this work, I wonder .... ?
-
Interesting theory on the Mi-Go possibility....
....one thing I find shocking is just how horrific Nyarlathotep's "true form" (if such a statement can be made) is... one look at the abomination and anyone's mind would be shattered !
Maybe it's a kindness (in a twisted sense) that he walks so frequently in his Avatar "Masks" - when dealing with mankind ? (shudder!)

I have a fun little sleuthing adventure underway, though it may not be all that revelationary....
...anyways....you probably know about "The Red Gloved Man" - unique character seen all throughout "The Yuggoth Contract" - cards. He has his own special unique card, where he is listed as "Conspirator" - and all you see is his red gloves, and a sharp glistening dagger. His face is covered in shadows, and remains unseen.
He also appears on several of the Conspiracy cards in that cycle, like "The Guardian of the Key" and "The Locked Gate".
Anyways, I won a huge auction of CCG and LCG cards from Ebay a while back, and it finally arrived in the mail.
Imagine my surprise when, while flipping through my newfound card stocks, I discovered this one:
The Voice on the Phone - The New Boss (Syndicate Unique Character)
Type: AVATAR OF NYARLATHOTEP
"It was barely a whisper, and the connection crackled with the distance."
------------------------
Now..the part that really piqued my interest was his attire...it's a guy....seated at a desk and looking out the window of the room he's in. He's on the phone, and it's hard to tell - but he "might" be wearing skin-tight gloves, like the Red Gloved Man picture has. Regardless, the hat style is the same as the Red Gloved Man...and the clincher, for me at least, is the dagger lying on the table behind him. It's similiar (though not identical, I think) to the dagger wielded by the Red Gloved Man in most of his images.
Conclusion....
The Red Gloved Man is quite probably....

NYARLATHOTEP ! - The Crawling Chaos !
-------------------------------------------------------------
What do ya' think, guys ? Do I get a cookie for outstanding sleuthing ?!

Quite interesting Manitou ....but what about the specific ?'s (in addition to their background/origin) - on what the Order wants, etc- the relation to the Old Ones - etc ?
-
Actually, Thomas....I took care of both of those last ones for you - meaning....I rapidly bought them !
Yay - let us know if you ever get others of these - or Spawn of the Sleeper // Antediluvian Dreams (I can never find these either) -
oooh....well-played Thomas, well played indeeeeed
I shall be looking at these with great interest !

Dear Dam,
My friend has my printed out FAQ - and he is on vacation a few more days. Also...I have been working 3rd shift....so many of my morning postings are done under a cloud of fatigue and probably less-than-100% thinking ability - lol. -
But thanks for pointing it out to me ! (that it's in there - - - the FAQ is not something I am innately thinking, "Oooh, I'll check the FAQ cause surely it will tell me the answer to this obscure question !" - whatever it is - mostly because many here have been generally suggesting the FAQ is somewhat incomplete or quite random in both the EXACT questions it chooses to address....and even what conclusions it apparently draws for certain cards - I point to Endless Interrogation and Jack Brady (Syndicate guy) - interpretations as just 2-examples of rulings people have declared "unusual")
-----
As an aside....Julia Brown (Cthulhu) - doesn't even seem to be that good of a card then....if you have to have 2-cards in hand when you attack with her, just to make sure her "ability" triggers...and looking at her card, in general....at best...you are getting a 1-point "discount" on the Cost-to-Skill ratio (I think she costs 3 but has 4-skill) - and one extra Terror icon.... (2-Combat and at least 1-Terror is common for many Cthulhu characters). Is there some special way to use her that I cannot fathom ?
* - one possible way I can imagine - but it's gimmicky - would be a Yog // Cthulhu mix deck that relied on you tossing strong things like Cthulhu or Yog himself into the discard pile - then using Limbo Gate to put them into play without having to pay their printed costs. This is tricky though as you would have to have these strong cards in your hand....AND have Julia....and put her into play on turn-3...commit and attack with her..discard those exact cards...also have or draw a Limbo Gate (or similiar card) on Round-4....resource...and play Limbo to possibly...possibly...get Cthulhu (for instance) into play 2-turns sooner than "normal resourcing" would allow you. But that seems fairly "luck based" (heavily) to actually get all those cards and the timing of them "just right" - - - so ...other than that, how is Julia even all that helpful to most decks ?
-
Out of curiosity .....what stories do these, apparently diabolical, Order of the Silver Twilight guys even appear in ?
Also - what is that symbol actually meaning....does anyone know significance (if any) of the three arrows pointing outwards ?
Lastly - what is their ultimate goal ? - like ....from what I can tell, they know about The Mythos - creatures, spells, etc - but what do they actually want ? - Do they want to help Cthulhu (specifically) awaken from his sleep so he can destroy humanity ? Do they see this as a good thing / - why ? / how ? - and lastly, do they actively oppose the other Great Old Ones // Outer Gods - in favor (only) of Cthulhu, or do they actually try to help any and all of them to escape their sleep / imprisonment ?
-
Thanks for the clarification guys ....sorry for having some misunderstanding at first !
Since we are on the topic of Yog-Sothoth...let me run this quick question I had from another thread (it didn't get noticed/answered since the original poster switched threads to another one I think few have looked back at it since):
* - Speak to the Dead - Yog Sothoth spell // Action: Discard the top 4 cards of your deck. Then, add any 2 cards from your discard pile to your hand.
Anyways...the way we have been playing this card is..... you pay 3 and "show it to your opponent" - IE you are playing it...but when this card is "played" - it goes to the Discard Pile. So we place it there. We then take the top 4-cards of our library, as the card directs, and flip them over into the Discard Pile. Now the player who used the spell gets to look at ALL those cards in the Discard Pile at that time....and pick up 2 of them to put into his hand. This COULD include the just-used Speak to the Dead, if they wanted, along with something else.
This is correct, yes ? We thought it seemed okay given the way the spell would resolve, and then it's normal effect...etc
-
Hmm....that is a pretty fine line of distinction one has to make, eh Professor ? - Committed to the story....but "she hasn't actually committed" - for purposes of triggering her effect ?
* - also - assume you had zero cards in your hand to discard - or only 1 - when you DID send Cthulhu Julia in to a story (in the normal method during your Story Phase) - you still get to draw 2-cards, right ?
I ask because in the other thread (check it out maybe) one of the guys was pointing out that you HAVE to have two characters in play for something like A Small Price to Pay - or Opening the Limbo Gate (one of your guys, one of enemy - in discard pile) ...etc - and I was wondering if this is another card where if "you don't have the thing before the comma, then you can't get the effect after".... the "THEN ..... - if condition before THEN is not satisfied, then what comes after the THEN....cannot happen either.... they said....
Is Julia's thing similiar or different / etc ?
-
Yeah, I have to agree with you on the Endless Interrogation ....using it (when it comes up) in my current Hastur // Agency Rush deck has been very powerful. If I get Magah Birds on Turn-1....even without the 70-steps combination....I am able to win/succeed at - at LEAST 1-story...because opponent has only 1- or maybe 2 small characters out on his turn...if lucky..
As soon as I take the story...I lay out Endless Int - and they must randomly toss a card... then I tap one of my domains to pick back up to hand from discard...then (stupid errata !) - I lay out it again...and they randomly lose 2nd card..... then I use another domain.....and pick up ....and lay down again..... etc. etcetera
Basically with even 1-success on a story, I can destroy (random !!) 3-cards (and maybe 4) - which is just crazy for 1-card. On Turn-2 (potentially) my opponent can easily have ZERO cards in hand and be praying for a good draw to save his game !
And the worst part is...once the cycle of Endless begins, the person being hit by it has NO way to stop it....the only way to win is to somehow stop EVERY enemy character from ever succeeding even once...at a story. That is very hard to do for the whole game, even if you are doing pretty well.
The way Endless would be fair is ..."Use this ability to pick the card up from Discard - ONCE - in a given turn - only".
That way you could play it once (for Zero)....and it would go to Discard...then you could pay One to get it back...but this would be it....if you played it again on that same turn, you would not be allowed to pay 1- and pick it up again from Discard.
Limiting the effect to 1-2 cards, instead of 3-4, would be a big help, I think - to weakening its power.
-
Wait....really ???
Here's Sac Offerings wording:
Action: Choose and wound a character controlled by an opponent. Then, that character's controller may choose and wound a character.
-
So you (Manitou) - are saying that - 1.) It's okay to use this when I have zero guys in play, but my opponent has at least 1.... and if the opponent had 2-guys of his own in play, and I had none....that he'd have to suffer TWO wounds ?
I can agree with you on the first part...but I have a huge issue thinking the second is accurate. If that were true, then Sac-Offerings would be one of the most ridiculous cards in the game. You'd never want to play any characters with Cthulhu till Turn-3 or 4, if you could afford to wait...since every time your opponent would get out 2-guys....you could play a single Sac-Offerings and essentially kill off both of them with that 1-card..... that seems a bit zany to me.I would think - at most - you'd do one Wound...then since it says the opponent MAY - choose to wound another...if they decline that "choice" - then nothing further happens.
Maybe that's what you were saying anyways, and if so - forgive my misunderstanding.
-
Ha ! - that Big Wheel one is twisted and quite surprising !
I have to wonder, however, if FFG purposely puts out "less interesting" - Story Cards -then they had back in the CCG-era ? As you have shown from the listings, and also Hellfury, some of the older ones are most impressive and powerful !

Paying for card abilites
in CoC Rules Discussion
Posted
waaaaaat ? - I didn't think that was the case at all....if a card says "pay-2" - unless it says you must pay 2 of some sort of Resources (specifically) - I didn't think you needed any particular resources ?
An example would be Cthulhu, Lord of R'lyeh ....the new card....he has "3: Choose an opponent - that opponent must choose and sacrifice a character"
There is nothing saying that the "3" in this case have to all be Cthulhu resources. It can be 3 of whatever you have on your domains as resources.
Methinks you are mistaken, though - given my own limited (overall) experience with the game, I'll defer to the Brains of the Forum Operation - Professor, Hellfury, Dam, Prodigee, et al - !
--------------------
Edit: I see what you mean regarding Thing...but there is no way it is to be played any other way, or ..what...you think you have to pay 5 ? for it... or you are saying you think the 2-Paid to make him go into play from your hand, must be 2-Hastur resources ? That seems pretty odd, as I think the rules for him would say " pay 2 (Hastur Symbols) - and return 1- (Hastur symbol) character to your hand to put Thing Behind You into play from your hand..." - if they wanted it to be that way.
