IndyBart got a reaction from Conza89 in Capacity reduced by PDS with Graviton Laser, question
If you couldn't assign them to fighters, what would be the point of the Yellow 2 tech that forces hits to be assigned to non-fighters?

Yea, you can't blow up ships from non-active systems to produce hits in the active system. "In the active system" is just assumed as part of the Devotion ability because only ships in the active system can participate in the space combat to which hits are being assigned.

This topic has come up on BGG as well and this is what my group does for 5 player games. Everyone has a home system that is 2 spaces away from the next person and no TG's are given out. It's more like playing on a cone than playing on a disk.

Once the speaker reveals the agenda, you go initiative order around the table and everyone get's an opportunity to either veto the agenda or add a rider it. If the first 3 people all add riders to the agenda, and the last person plays a veto, all the riders are discarded and a new agenda is picked. Once voting has started, you can't then veto an agenda as that is not the timing of the actions in the agenda phase.
If you look at 8.2 in the rule books they make a point to say that 'reveal agenda' is the first step. Riders and veto card/abilities all have the qualifying condition of 'When an agenda is revealed', so everyone has to have a chance to use cards/abilities before moving on to the next step which is voting.  When more than one person want's to play a card at the same time, you determine who's happens first based on their initiative, which is under 43 in the rule book.
After everyone has had a chance to add a rider or veto, you start voting with the person to the left of the speaker and go clockwise around the table, which is step 2 under 8.2 in the rule book.

One of the vendors that sells one for TI3 had a post on the reddit TI sub that he was working out the bugs for a new frame. His website is currently under a redesign as of yesterday when I last checked it. That being said, I wonder why FFG leaves so much money on the table when they produce these games. Why aren't they making a nice Broken Token style insert for their games, or a galaxy frame to keep the tiles from slipping, or a grip mat to hold tiles in place, or a plastic card holder so your sleeved cards stack more easily?

They are powerful but not game breaking IMO. I will say, however, that in my last game (which I lost) I had a space turtle fleet just outside of MR with 4 PDS (2 planets) and the flag ship. I was tossing 8 dice at anyone and everyone that tried to move in on MR. The goal for that game was really just teach new players how to play the game, so I was trying to see how powerful PDS could really be. The funny thing is that the ability to blast non-fighters only works once because you have to exhaust the card - but NOBODY wanted to be the guy that decimated his fleet so the next guy could move in and get victory points. Cold War tactics at it's best.
I'm playing again this afternoon and will keep my eyes open to see if this trend continues.

[obligatory I took second place with The Winnu last game they're not that bad post]
That being said, I think the proposition to give them access to anyone one tech opens the flood gate for absolute abuse. While I agree Cruiser II would absolute fix what is seen as the "Sardak Start" in my playgroup. I think that this is a balancing mechanic against them. [Incoming Anecdotal Evidence] I held Rex the entire game, and only through keep away and over expansion on my part did I manage to only take 2nd place. Hegemonic Trade Policies is absolutely absurd. I understand that without Cruiser II they don't really have a chance to get there at any decent speed. But the threat of you taking Rex so early without influence is a potent one. One that will make players either break their bank trying to remove the token for themselves crippling them for a turn, or forcing them to park expeditionary forces just to slow you down.
While this post will most likely surprise no one but I think they're fine as is.

That may be true but just because a race is really good at control doesn't mean they are good at technology or economy. I've never seem a game won where one person just dominated the entire game, in fact it's the guy that has barley any fleet left and is holding on by a thread that usually scores enough victory points to win. It's all well and good that some races are really good at combat now or whatever, but are they good at scoring objectives? That's not been my experience in the handfull of TI4 games I've played thus far. I'm interested in seeing how other groups play TI4 once it's out to the masses.
Good podcast btw, looking forward to the next one.

Hosting a day of Twilight Imperium 4th Edition on Saturday September 16th at Family Time Games. We currently have enough people and copies to run three games. There are currently three spots open. I have no problem increasing the count based on people wanting to play and number of copies we can get. Feel free to sign up on my meetup group or let me know if you're interested here. Hope to see you there.

IndyBart reacted to TheRyanAndKevinAlliance in anyone play the 6-player preset map?
We ended up with 5 for our first game, used the preset map and it honestly worked out great. Not sure how different it would've been with 6 (regarding how the map would be), but we didn't notice any terrible disparities.
My position ended up with only 4 planets nearby, but it didn't feel like the worst thing in the world.
Ultimately, the best part about twilight imperium is that you can and should put pressure on the players who have inherent advantages. I ended up second to MR and held it for  few turns. Tied for first before we called it (it was late; we were really just taking it for a test-drive).
So, no complaints so far about that preset map.

Maybe, but if you've got 3 units that can sustain without dying they can extend the length of a battle without loosing their fighter fodder. It's way more economical to preserve ships after they are built than to have to constantly rebuild them. Every round that you're not replacing ships is a round that you're either building your fleet, or using your planets for influence and not resources.
As for Assault Cannon, showing up to a battle with 3 destroyers for a cost of 3, against somebody that has a dreadnought fleet of 3 is totally worth it. You may get wiped out but you cost them an expensive unit, and with 3 destroyers you probably put a dent into their fighter escort.
In fact, you might think twice about attacking the guy with 2 dreadnoughts, 2 destroyers, a carrier and 6 fighters if he's able to blast one of your ships before combat even starts, then put a dent into your fighter escort, and then rotate healing up his dreadnoughts every other combat round as they eat a hit. I'm not saying they would win, but TI4 appears to me to be very geared towards efficiency - and sometimes the threat of war is enough to keep other people from attacking you.
That being said, the first level of red giving you an extra PDS shot is kind of fun when you've got 3 or 4 PDS in a system with upgraded PDS and seems on par with the rest of the technologies - especially considering it helps to upgrade PDS, Destroyers and Cruisers. The second level of red, does in fact seem VERY underwhelming when compared  against blues' Fleet Logistics or greens' Hyper Metabolism.

This was my approach as well. If I'm playing a faction that isn't trying to get warsuns out as soon as possible I'd stick with the green/blue tech's. If I'm going for warsuns then I'm might as well also upgrade destroyers.
The two games I've played now didn't last past round 7 before somebody had 10 victory points - so it probably does't make sense to go for both the red/yellow upgrades and the blue/green upgrades unless you are playing as the tech heavy space fish, or have a way to bypass tech requirements for unit upgrades.

Will you provide an official DLC to play Twilight Imperium 4th edition on Tabletop Simulator ?

20 years ago, I could have carved out the 20 hours or so needed to play a full game. Now with a family, it is going to be considerably harder. Hence playing on TTS is a good solution as it allows to break the game over multiple game nights while leaving the board in place and reconnecting with your old buddies which have been scattered by work and family commitments over a whole continent. Please, Please, Please...

For instance, what they have done for Scythe is amazing. Can we hope to see something similar done for Twilight Imperium 4th?

IndyBart reacted to Duskwalker in No transfer actions? Really?!
Good riddance. Transfer actions were always a rule that required way to much explanation for a mechanic rarely used by anyone. In 9/10 cases doing your activations in the right order made it unnecessary and in the 10th case, the game would come to a screeching hold, because that guy had to look up how those things worked again. Yes you loss some tactical ability, but if I never have to explain Transfer actions again it is a price a am willing to pay.

And Really, I'm looking for people selling their old IT3 copies so I can buy their plastic and paint them up. There isn't that big of a difference in the plastic, and I think it's okay if some factions have destroyers or carriers that look slightly different. So long as everyone knows what is what it could be cool to have 17 sets of plastic customized for each race!
