  1. Here is the Hero card guide from Richard Borg:

    BattleLore

Skill and Artifact Cards Quick Review!

    Hero Class Skill Cards

When a Hero Class Skill Card refers to the Character by class followed by the word “Hero”, the Skill card effect works when the Hero is acting as Leader or when the Hero is acting as a Champion.

When a Hero Class Skill Card refers to the Character by class followed by the word “Champion”, the Skill card effect only works when the Hero is acting as a Champion.

When a Hero Class Skill Card refers to the Character by class followed by the word “Leader”, the Skill card effect only works when the Hero is acting as Leader.

All Field Commander Skill cards have Field Commander Hero, except “Riding” which reads Field Commander Champion.

All Warrior Skill Cards have Warrior Hero, except “Hack-and Slash” and “Riding” which read Warrior Champion.

All Rogue Skill Cards have Rogue Hero, except “Riding” which reads Rogue Champion.

Some Cleric Skill Cards have Cleric Hero, except “Herbal Remedy” which reads Cleric Leader, “Pray for the Dying’ which should have the word Hero following Cleric (sorry about this), “Healing Hands” and “Riding” which read Cleric Champion.

    Non-Class Specific Skill Cards

When a Non-Class specific Skill Card has the word “Hero”, the Skill card effect works when the Hero is acting as Leader or when the Hero is acting as a Champion. All Non-Class specific Skill Cards have the word Hero, except “Horse Vaulter”.

When a Non-Class specific Skill Card has the word “Champion”, the Skill card effect only works when the Hero is acting as a Champion. Currently no Non-Class specific Skill Card has the word Champion.

When a Non-Class specific Skill Card has the word “Leader”, the Skill card effect only works when the Hero is acting as a Leader. “Horse Vaulter” has the word “Leader”, the Skill card effect only works when the Hero is acting as a Leader.

    Artifact Card Use

Artifact card use is explained in the Heroes rules booklet on page 9. There are three card examples:

Any Hero can use an Artifact card with a green symbol. The green symbol on this card is circled in red.

Artifact cards that have a yellow symbol can only be used by a Hero that is acting as a Champion. The yellow symbol on this card is circled in red.

Artifact cards that have a blue symbol can only be used by a Hero that is acting as a Leader. The blue symbol on this card is circled in red.

    Enjoy!

Don't you worry, Balroy! If you are ever locked in the attic with your BL, we will sure make a Rescue Party to get you from there (or just the BL, if we are too feeble. But you'll be sure to follow, anyway). We will be helped by all the creatures already released, and a bunch more we will release ourselves! Not a door will stand our imaginative axes, and your foes will sure run with terror (or roll on the floor with laughter at the sight of a bunch of old guys holding walking sticks in the air and sure having a good time with it, but that will do just fine, I expect).

Thanks Pedrogran_risa.gif  My mind can rest easy about that.  It's nice to know we're all in this together.

  3. I also, am not the least bit interested in Battles of Westeros.  To me, attaching the name of BattleLore to it was an act of BLASPHEMY.

What kind of perverted mind would think a BL fan would buy it just because it says BattleLore on the box?  Or, that a non BL fan would be drawn to it because they recognize the name and not be disgusted when they realize it is just a marketing piece of bait?

I can see fans of the books and fans of  the game, A Game of Thrones, looking past this and still buying in to it.  But hopefully enough of the rest of the world of BL fans and non BL fans will not look past it and generate more enemies than sales.

Even if they discontinue my beloved BattleLore altogether I can still see me playing it for the next 30 years.  And after that, if it is relegated to the attic by those that think I am too old and feeble, I will go there with it.

So it was you who caused the earthquake in Tatzikistan huh? The butterfly effect my friend. You play without B.S. and other people suffer. You should be ashamed of yourself. lengua.gif

  5. Finally caved in and all in one order, got my copies of the Troll, Dragons, and Creatures after much hesitation.

My nephew and I decided the proper setting for our first experience with them would be on the Epic board, combined with Heroes.  He chose the Fire Dragon and Troll along with his sneaky Rogue Hero.  I countered with the Ice Drake and Wood Giant to accompany my well traveled Wizard Hero.  First, the Drake froze the Fire Dragon who was menacing and frightening my front line and let the men finish him off.  Seeking more glory, the Drake went after the Troll, but the Troll broke out of the ice and cleaved the mighty blue Dragon.  The Rogue boldly and successfully led a devastating attack on the right section but the Wizard, who was staying out of harms way with only one life left (getting ready to join the war council), only harassed from the forest  edge,  failing to conjure up any lightning.  All the while, Woody the forest Giant (my favorite) was laughing and hurling logs at anyone that happened by his Lair.

This was everything we had dreamed of.  Now we don't have to go all the way to Disney World for the magic.  We can get it in the comfort of our own dining room table.

After the adventure, I was quite worried and slept restlessly all night however.   I was comforted  and relieved to see the sun shining the next morning.  You see, we had played the game with no BS.

Just play however **** way you want to play!

It is moy considered opinion.... this game is becoming a masterpiece.

The first game I played, neither me nor my opponent had played before.  This game took about 6 hours, it was rife with mistakes, but very enjoyable.  The length was due to looking through the rules, but mostly reading/interpreting the event cards.  Our second game took half as long with considerably fewer rules errors.  Our third game probably ran a similar length, with only a few noticeable mistakes, but was an absolute blast.

After about 6 or so sessions, our games run an average of 90 minutes, which includes 5 minutes of set up, and about the same to put everything away.

Wow!  That sounds like my first game with my son except we left it set up on the table for about 3 weeks and never finished it and unfortunately, never got it out again.   You've just given me the encouragement I needed to try it out more.  Thanks for that.

  7. My apologies to Fragmaster, didn't mean to drag your name into my post above.

To quote The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,  "There are two kinds of people in this world my friend" those with BS and those with no BS.

BS or no BS (this is a phrase that I use often in life now, and chuckle inwardly at each occasion gran_risa.gif

I find that very amusing, as I have to laugh every time I see BS mentioned with or without the "no" part.babeo.gif

In the BEGINNING, when a defending unit was not eliminated or did not retreat from the hex it occupied would fight back. No man, dwarf or goblin, in our brief history would stand and do nothing to defend itself. That indeed would of been pure fantasy!

Battle Savvy, was a way to straighten out some of the half-truth chronicles of the past. For a man, dwarf or goblin, will always fight back if given the opportunity!

Please forgive for bringing this back.  Been wondering if this is meant to include BattleCry and Memoir '44 too?

And..... if it's not too much to ask, how it happened, as toddrew asked about BattleLore, that it wasn't in those games from the beginning as well?

Only because I've been playing the "old" way for about 9 years with these wonderful games.  Looking back, my nephews and I did wonder why they couldn't fight back right away but then just looked at it that they would have a chance to do that when it was your turn.  Though I understand of course, Battle Savvy eliminates any chance you don't have the  right card to play.

p.s.  just wanted to know about the other games and maybe the how part, not looking to continue the debate here if Battle Savvy is or isn't better sorpresa.gifgui%C3%B1o.gif.

His role on the battlefield is different when he is a Champion and another story when he is a Leader. I'd find weird if he actually rolled the same amount of dice from his weapon regardless of role. This would mean to me that he is a Leader only in name since all that he does is waving his weapon as always and killing the enemy. This is not a Leader. This is just another soldier.

I hope that this makes it better for you. happy.gif

I view the Heroes as mighty and brave figures who wouldn't hesitate to charge headlong into battle to lead by example.  Sort of along the lines of an Aragorn.

  11. You probably found out by now but the answer is yes, when the skill card says Hero or Leader.

Use of Artifact cards was explained clearly in the rules but skill cards weren't so much.  Richard Borg was kind enough to clear up the matter of skill cards to apply them the same as artifact cards.

Look for "Skill and Artifact Cards Quick Review" by Richard.  I found it in the forum under the topic "Heroes in Battle-Leaders" currently on pg. 13 of BattleLore topics.

That Rogue there then can lead those boys quickly through any terrain which is pretty awesome!

  12. Thanks for your take on it FragMaster.  I'm glad it doesn't bother you, but I can't look at it that way.  It bugs me too much.

I would buy that just knowing the cleric has the mace of fright could cause fear.  But under these battle rules, the unit fighting would know he couldn't use it and if he got it out and began waving it around, they would just laugh at him.  Anyway this doesn't speak to the artifacts and skills which must be used.

Also, although I do admit it might cause a balance problem making leaders too powerful, I have to wonder.  When your opponent pairs a hero with good cards up with a red foot unit, it's not hard to simply run away.  Or, a warrior holding Blademaster with a blue unit would be 6d.  The same as a blue Troll which is already in the game.

But, as far as rendering a champion worthless, I strongly disagree.  A champions mobility makes him able to get to places quickly which is a very valuable tool no matter what.  I recently sent, by himself, my mounted wizard with Ball lightning and Staff of striking deep into enemy territory and he cleaned out nearly an entire section of partially weakened units in two turns.  And not to forget, a champions retreat capability of 3 hexes prevents mounted units from pursuing.

Your questions are not covered in the rules and should have been worked out.  My question, I believe, should have been too.  For me, it's much more fun if the story fits in with the gameplay than to have to think of it in some abstract way to explain it.

  13. I'm having a conflict in my mind with Leader combat.  I think the rule book for Heroes is just way too vague on Leader combat to be able to say one way or the other if you don't add the Hero's weapon 1d (or 2d for Warrior) to the units normal dice amount or you do.  The threads I've read on it seem to definitely say not to add any dice for the Hero's weapon when acting as a leader but only skill and artifact cards when they apply to a Hero or Leader. But I don't see how a Hero can not be able to cause extra damage with just his basic weapon when he is battling with a unit he's leading because that would be like saying he can not use his weapon.  I have not read anything from Richard Borg to clarify this issue but please tell where to find it if he has.

Anyway,  this does not make sense when you consider some of the skill and artifact cards.  For example, the artifact card "Mace of fright" which targets a Hero with a "Mace" weapon.  If a cleric acting as a leader can not use his mace, how can the artifact card cause it to create fright?  Same goes for the artifact card "Staff of striking" which targets a Hero with a "Staff" weapon and adds 1d in melee.  If the wizard isn't using the staff while he's leading, who then is wielding it to potentially cause extra damage?  There is also a "Lore Blade" artifact card which targets a Hero with a "Sword" weapon to use each lore rolled to score 1 hit.  Does the Hero let the unit he's with borrow such a valuable and surely prized weapon?

There are also some skill cards that don't make sense if a Leader can not use his weapon or is not fighting along side his unit.  The Field Commander, Rogue, and Warrior each have a 'Blademaster" skill card which adds 1d in melee when acting as a Hero.  How do they accomplish this if fighting without their sword?  Then there is the "Assassin" skill card which the Rogue and Warrior both have.  It actually states "Hero.... battling en enemy hero in melee combat".  How could they use this assassin skill if not fighting?

Anywho, that's how I'm currently looking at it and by the way I really enjoy playing BattleLore with Heroes no matter how it's played cause I can pretend I'm the Hero and put myself on the battlefield and continue from battle to battle.  I just don't like battle savvy for all the troops but think they should earn it by first getting a kill victory medal.
