  1. I tend to say to people that if they like scheming, plotting and fantasy they will probably become addicted. Otherwise I just get them to watch a game and they become hoocked within minutes.

I love house stark, wolves and hard hitting military challenges are me all over. I got into the game before reading the first book but the books are great for putting everything and everyone in context.

  2. Dear all.

I play AGOT with a few friends, one of which plays with Baratheon. Recently he has managed to pull out 'The Iron Throne' Which basically means he wins dominance. Does anyone have any card recommendations for house Stark that will deal with this location card?

He also tends to pull out the Knight of Flowers, so any recommendations on how to kill it off without engaging it in challenges would also be gratefully recieved.

  3. Many thanks for all your answers Ktom. It sounds like I am doing the right thing for the most part but you have helped to clarify what I was thinking.

I take it attachments, if they belong to your opponent, are returned to your discard pile and not your opponents if you manage to discard them by returning the character they are attached to back to your hand etc?

  4. Dear all,
I've been playing AGOT and need a little clarification on some of the rules.

    1. When a military challenge is unopposed does the defender still have to kill off a selected character?

    2. If a participating attacking character has the deadly keyword does it mean that if you loose the challenge you still get to kill the defenders character?

    3. If I defend with a character that has the deadly keyword and loose the challenge, do I have to select and kill one of my characters and the defender also has to select and kill an attacking character?

    4. If a military challenge is issued and won by a participating attacking character with the deadly keyword does this mean that two defending characters can be killed, one for the claim value on the plot card, and one for the deadly keyword

    5. Do plot cards affect all houses in play? For example, if I choose to play a plot card that states that no events can be played during that round; does this affect all houses, or just the opponents?

    6. When attaching attachments to opponent’s characters, do these remain in place throughout the game or just for that round? If it’s just for that round are the attachments then placed in the opponents discard pile or your own?

When do you use the discard pile? I have been using this for used events and when event cards specifically tell you to use it. I take it it’s not used for any other reason as you can’t discard drawn cards from your hand into the discard pile and then draw again?

When putting character cards into play do you announce their card effects to the opponent and can you read the other players cards/ ask what the card effects are before making a decision on what to do? I have been assuming you can when you need to as I play with house Stark and do not necessarily have a good knowledge of the other player’s house.

    Many thanks

  5. Thanks for the reply. I've been constructing a deck on Raven, based on reviews etc.

I already have the starter pack, which contains prebuilt decks for Stark, Lannister, Baratheon and Targaryen. Looking at the chapter packs I quite like the look of  the Defenders of the North set. However this does not appear to introduce any agendas, neither does it introduce Martel or Greyjoy. I'm assuming these two houses come as prebuilt decks somewhere?

I do like the look of the winter block as well, is this a chapter pack too? I'm not sure when this pack was released but the Defenders of the North sounds like it may be relatively new??

  6. Dear all,
I am now very much addicted to the game and want to expand my Stark deck beyond the basic start-up selection.
From what I understand a deck can contain more than one copy of a particular card? Therefore I could have multiples of say Catlyn Stark to increase the likelihood of drawing that card. Is this the same for events, location cards and attachments unless otherwise specified, and is there an upper limit to the number you can have?

Because Stark are more military might than intrigue, do I need to adapt my deck to increase my ability to play intrigue and power challenges by introducing cards such as Winterfell Audience Chamber or do I play to my strengths and introduce a lot of cards that can take out an opponents characters as quickly as possible?

  7. Hi guys,

AGOT players do seem a bit rare here in the UK. I'm 45 mins or so north of London and have started playing with some friends. Lucky for me they are already addicted to other Fantasy Flight games so it wasn't a hard sell but it is difficult to know if you are playing the game correctly and how best to build a deck without having someone with a bit of experience to point you in the right direction. I'm up for playing anyone but I haven't played more than a two player game beyond starter decks as yet.

http://www.gameslore.com sell the starter packs and chapter packs and can advise over the phone as well.

It may be worth checking out Collectormania in Milton Keynes at some point, they may have someone there that sells chapter packs etc.

During the draw phase you are allowed to draw two cards into your hand. I take it during this marshalling you are allowed to move cards in and out of play from your hand as well as moving cards into your discard pile if you wish?

I dont thing I understand this question. In draw phase you draw 2 cards (if not otherwise due to some card effects). Then in marshalling phase you may play any cards from your hand as long as you pay the cost (gold). But you cannost take characters back from play to you hand just so, neighter you can discard a character from hand or play unless some effect allows you to do so.

Sorry, I didn't explain the above very well, but you still managed to provide the answer I was after. I didn't realise you cannot take charactersback from play to your hand, I assumed you couldn't as the rule book didn't specifically state it.

Thank you for the clarification. I imagine there will be many more questions along the way.

  9. Dear all,

I played my first two AGOT games over the weekend and I could do with a bit of clarification on what are bound to be basic rules, but I can't seem to find anything in the rule book.

    So here we go..

During challenges, if the defending player has no power tokens, I take it the attacker can not issue a power challenge until such time as the defender has power to take?

During a challenge, can you attack and defend with multiple characters?

If a challenge is issued and a defender has no playable defending characters, because they are knelt, is this an unapposed challenge?

During the draw phase you are allowed to draw two cards into your hand. I take it during this marshalling you are allowed to move cards in and out of play from your hand as well as moving cards into your discard pile if you wish?

Are you allowed to have more then one limited card in play at any one time? The rule book states that you can 'play only one card (of any type) with the 'limited' keyword per round. Does this mean that if I have placed a limited card in previous rounds it can remain in play and I can place an additional limited card, or do I have to swap an in play limited card out in order to place another?

During the marshalling phase, if you place locations, do you need to kneel them or are they considered to be in play and effective from the moment they are placed? As an example, if I place a location such as winterfell castle, is this effective immediately for all my in play characters?

If I place a card that provides and income bonus during a marshalling phase, I take it I do not count that income bonus that round but have to wait until the next marshalling phase to be able to count it?

Cards that are stated as being attached to your house card, I'm assuming these are simply placed slightly bellow and under your house card when played?

Any clarification on the above would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

I'm sure knowledge of the source material helps to immerse oneself in a fashion...I happened to have first played the game and then caught up a little using wikipedia. I'll eventually get the actual reading started, but having spoiled myself already, I find it hard to get it going at this point.

On the note on collectibility...the actual expenditure is of course totally under your control. If you should skip out on all past CP cycles and jump right into the next one, it should save you quite a few penny.

Since it wasn't George R. R. Martin's world that hooked you into taking a look see, did any of the other LCGs (Call of Cthulhu & Warhammer) interest you by any chance?

No I hadn't looked at other LCGs. I'll be honest, it was the AGOT's name that first attracted me, and then when I read about it further I decided it sounded like a good game. I have had a look at Call of Cthulhu and it looks quite interesting, but I think I'll master AGOT first.

  11. Thanks guys. I order the core set and have played a few tentative games, I've decided that house Stark is my house. happy.gif. There are a few things I need clarifying on the rules, but I'll be good and post that it the right place.

I was a little naughty and brought the first book in the series as well, so hopefully it will be a good read. Although if it does turn out to be a good read my bank balance will be horrific.

Does anyone know if there are any UK, specifically Bedford based groups that play AGOT? I was thinking it may be an idea to either see it played or have a game with someone that knows what they are doing?

    Thanks

    Han

  12. Wow!

Thank you so much for your responses. It does sound a bit confusing and complext to say the least, but I'm guessing once I get into it I will become completely addicted.

I will definately shop around for my initial starter pack, as I suspect it's not the cheapest hoby to have once you get going. :-)

Many thanks for all your replys. I'll let you know how I get on.

  13. Dear all,

I'm very new to fantasy based games, if that's an appropriate term. I have been looking at AGOT living card game and think I may really enjoy it as it's not a board game or a role play game. But I haven't got a clue where to start, so I thought I had best ask before I go purchasing anything.

So what's the best thing to do to get into the game?  Does the board game include a full living card game starter set, or are they completely seperate games? I understand that the 'Iron Throne' starter set may be the best option to get started, but what does this include and can I start playing a multi player game on purchase?

I also understand that you can buy and collect monthly cards? I live in the UK I can't recall ever seeing this kind of thing other then pokemon cards in our local new agents. If I wanted to collect, where can I get these? I know I can get the expansions from Amazon uk.

Any help in getting started would be greatly appreciated.
