I must say that I am intrigued at the possibility of closer Crab - Scorpion relations that Kisada mentions in this letter....

It would appear at this point that its a safe bet the letters are also addressing the outstanding Worlds choices as the Dragon one confirmed Kitsuki Yaruma (Kitsuki being the Dragon choice from Worlds) is calling for backup to help him in the Imperial Court, and the Crab one has Yasuki Oguri (Crab choice) off to investigate the tower.
Looking forward to seeing who our other characters of note will be from the remaining letters.

They are not going to blow your socks off if you compare them to great literary works.  They are fun reads if you are enthusiastic about the characters.  I described them in other places as being similar in experience to listening to a Call of Cthulhu RPG actual play recording.  I also enjoy doing that so it's no surprise I enjoyed reading these stories.
I'm surprised they are so popular.  Certainly the marketing of putting to promo cards in there worked because I can't imagine that many people were interested in reading these books.  It frustrates me to think someone out there has a copy of Deep Gate opened only to extract the cards and then threw the book on their shelf unread.

Three so far didn't appear because they were introduced after the fact.  Calvin, Sefina and Daniela.
I started this thread with a full head of long luxurious hair.  Now I'm bald.  My only solace is that you don't actually have doubles of the book I'm looking for currently.

Cheaters gonna cheat regardless of if they bring a doctored piece of paper with errata on it or if they print that same text out and put it on the card.
I never understood intentionally cheating in an LCG.  I remember famously the first Worlds for Conquest had a cheater at the final table.  I don't understand why you'd do that considering the only thing on the line is a sense of achievement and recognition.  The recognition will ensure you'll be found out as a fraud eventually and the achievement would be hollow since you know you cheated.  I guess you also get some prizes, but those prizes don't offset the usual cost to attend these events.

And she's a real interesting character so that's shame.  Hopefully if we do get another round of these books in a year or two she is one of the featured investigators so she can get some time in the spotlight.  Though alternate versions of her sig cards would be really interesting consider how fundamental those cards are to how she works.  Kinda Preston has that same issue.

More than the other two books it feels like the Unicorn book works better if you read the short stories before it.  He explains what happened to Shono in the book, but it's better if you experienced it.  He kinda runs down Chagatai and his motivations, but again it's better if you see it directly from him and the Moto in that short story.   It feels like a very real extension of the stories that came before it rather than it's own story and that's sort of how I treated it.  As a much longer entry in the regular fictions.  The other two did feel more like complete stories.
I think this book did a good job of showing you what it's like to travel down the Sand Road, and what the outside perspective is of Rokugan.  Since that is a big part of the Unicorn identity then this was the most appropriate place to explore that.  Now when they talk about the Sand Road, Qamarist, the Caliphate, Djinn and/or Sorcery we have a much better idea of what that actually looks like in the setting.  I was certainly crying out for that.
I feel like the Phoenix book concentrated on characters more that setting, and that may be why I responded to it more.  The Scorpion and Unicorn both did heavy lifting in the setting and lore arenas and then chose to really only concentrate on a single lead.  I feel like Yojiro and Shono both get a good arc.  In the Phoenix book I feel like Spooky gave enough time to all three leads to give them an arc as well as flesh out some secondary characters.  Though at the same time I don't feel like that book did alot of setting and lore heavy lifting.  We are introduce to the Kaito, but that's shown through Kosori mostly and then the appendix stuff.  So it doesn't really take up too much away from the story and character work.

I am sad to hear this news because ever since Katrina took the drivers seat it feels like FFG's lore has risen significantly in quality.  Also I've only heard great opinions about Katrina from the writers that have worked with her on FFG projects.  We still have a great stable of writers in the L5R writers circle.  I hope they can find someone just a capable to fill her position.

I'd be hyped if Joe Abercrombie got a TV deal for his stuff as well.  Also someone who writes fantasy epics with endings.
I know people get super emotional over ASOIAF.  I guess I always managed to separate the books and the show such that I never got too upset.  As far as how long it takes Martin to finish the books I am a Dark Tower and Wheel of Time fan.  So I'm use to waiting way too long to read the end of a fantasy epic.  I don't like it, but I guess I'm well practice at it at this point.  The level of quality on the ASOIAF books are so far above any other fantasy book I've read that I can't help but give Martin a pass for making me wait so long.  Especially considering in my experience when an author rushes a fantasy epic to a conclusion you get Song of Susannah.  Take your time Martin.  If I gotta wait years to read each installment I want it to be good.
I think The 13th Warrior was a way more enjoyable experience when compared to the book Eaters Of The Dead.

I mean if you could just print out the bottom half of the proxy and cut it to cover the text box inside the sleeve.  No need to cover the art and that proves you have the card.  I wonder if that would be acceptable in an official event.

IIRC, FFG got anything published in L5R books.  The Unicorn book(s?) gave a general description of the Burning Sands and the Ujik-hai etc, but the dozen factions in Medinat-al-Salaam were only ever described in LBS material, so are not available.

The Return to Dunwich box only replaces a subset of the encounter cards in each scenario.  It is not a standalone product. If you don't have the entire Dunwich cycle it's kinda not worth it.  I guess you get the storage solution and some new player cards, but the encounter cards will sit there in your box till they reprint Dunwich again.
Just skip to Carcosa OP.  It's a fantastic cycle and you can play the cycles in any order.  Dunwich will get reprinted eventually, but you'll drive yourself mad waiting (which would be thematically appropriate).

So, I was reading through Mask of the Oni, preparing to update the Imperial Census, and there was a little tidbit in part of the backstory that potentially has far-reaching consequences.
The following sentence is from the module

People who recognise that name might now be somewhat worried...

They still reprint the first few LOTR LCG cycles so I doubt they'll just let any of the AH TCG material stay out of print indefinitely.  How long until the next reprinting though is a question.  Sometimes we wait a while to get stuff reprinted in that queue.

Was this the first time we saw the mention of how the marriage wording tripped up the Unicorn? (Customary being read differently between the two sides)

As for the novella as a whole, I think I enjoyed this one more than the Phoenix one. The fact that it felt more ties into the other fiction helped. My biggest complaint is that it was a novella. The story felt like it would have benefited from being told in a longer format; allowing more exploration of the characters.

phillos got a reaction from rsdockery in Where should the next expansion cycle go?
I always campaign hard for Dreamlands in these sorts of threads because I'd like to see more Dreamlands themed player cards and encounter sets.  Also I think a more fantasy driven horror could be fun to play through and it would be very different from TFA and TCU.  I'd love for it to be about Atlatch Natcha.  I think that would be more fun than Hypnos, but I guess I wouldn't mind Hypnos either.  We got one Cat of Ulthar in the game (and maybe another).  Would be nice to see some Zoog cards.  I'm not confident this will be next though considering they didn't hold onto Carolyn.  If it was coming next you'd figure they would have held her for a cycle and release her there.
I'll also second that a brain cylinder Mi-Go themed adventure would be a nice change of pace.
I expect we'll get Innsmouth and Deep Ones sooner rather than later though.  It is the go to setting for most Lovecraft themed games and we've gone 5 campaigns so far without really seeing that stuff, which is cool.  I'm happy about that since I like seeing less touched corners of weird fiction, but I don't expect that to last forever.
