  1. Lord knows I've said my peace on Morality and how I feel it's a narrative dead end. But never one to shy away from shooting off my mouth, let me say this. . . .

What GM runs games in which the players do nothing? Why aren't you challenging them with difficult situations that require tough choices?

I'm torn between explaining how my out of context quote is being misconstrued, or wondering why a post from more than a year ago is suddenly worth debate.

    @Doc the Weasel

If others were willing to buy the books and write up the abridged Talent descriptions, would you be willing to plug that info into your existing format? That seems to be the simplest and most equitable solution, at least to me.

... He obviously doesn't want to do it. ...

It's more an issue of time right now, actually, though the end is the same. Were I not running two different campaigns, being a father/husband, and Overwatching I would keep them up.

Just wondering, why did you try to solicit people to buy the books/hosting for you via Patreon if time was an issue? (see post 23 on page 2 of this thread before refuting this).

I am all for changing your mind, that is allowed, but you are responding to a post, that is responding to that request.

I didn't start a Patreon. It was something that another poster had suggested that I looked into.

But to answer your question, time was less of an issue when that was going on. Also, with all time-management issues, it was additionally about priority. If I were to go that route then it would take up a higher priority (and something else would fall to the wayside).

People can post their own versions out there all they want (and I wouldn't dream of stopping them).

I would prefer if people created their own resources rather than using mine, but there are really only a few elements that I can say are unique to mine and those have popped up other places already.

I am well in my rights, though, to tell people not to put the Begging For XP logo on their sheets.

There was no disrespect intended, and I'm surprised to see people reacting this way. My intention was to help out where you felt like you couldn't, Doc. Keeping the logo was only to attribute you, the original maker of the handouts. I have in no way put my own logo, name or reference, because I'm not doing this for any personal gain or recognition. Just trying to help out a community that really liked your handouts, and liked the consistency of the line. (I feel like they have been the best set of fan-made talent trees out there.) But if you are not wanting to be continued recognized as the creator of these sheets, I have no problem removing your logo from them.

Didn't mean for it to come off as confrontational. Inspired by is cool, but it should be clear that I didn't do them.

  6. To be fair, nobody cares about the font the Begging For XP talent sheets are displayed at. They care that it is a PDF and that it can have its text copied off. The "display" requirements are "can I read it without squinting?". Anyone thinking people care about the font of these sheets is rather confused.

As a professional designer, I'd like to just say that there is more to it than that. Unfortunately, it's one of those cases where good typography work is invisible. It's the bad work that stands out.

That said, there are plenty of typefaces that would do the job just as well.

  7. Acrobat says "Eurostile LT Std"

    The font is indeed Eurostyle.

    Talent Body

    Eurostyle Condensed – 9/12

    Talent Name

    Eurostyle Bold Condensed – 10/10

    Cost

    Eurostyle Demi – 5/5

    Career Name

    Eurostyle Bold Extended 2 – 12/12

    Spec Name

    Eurostyle Bold Extended 2 – 24/24

    Spec Skills
    Eurostyle Condensed/Bold Condensed – 10/12

The door isn't shut for updates, buying the books for a game I'm not playing just to update the sheets isn't really feasible right now. I was talking to someone on this board about a possible patreon to fund the books and some of the hosting costs, but I've been very busy between family, planning my next campaign, and Overwatch to make anything happen.

You wouldn't think it would be hard to convince the Republic that the group with a planet-sized superweapon just might be a threat... And don't even try to tell me they kept that thing hidden.

Unfortunately that's what you get when you build a democracy that is:

    a) tired of war

    b) populated by members who are sympathetic to their old Imperial roots

    c) don`t believe they exist, much less can be strong enough to take on the new Republic.... Did I mention HUGE galaxy and unknown regions?

The Republic knew about the First Order. Check out the canon entry on Wookiepedia.

Did they believe they existed in the numbers and size and threat level they were?

Some did, but most of that group founded the Resistance. The rest had to argue it in the Senate against those who didn't or who were bought off.

  11. The problem with that of course, is that the WotC engine is a dead engine. No new material, no support, no new anything. Oh sure, there are probably people who play it - there are folks that still play WEG - but without a new flow of stuff, it wont be nearly as good as an FFG game.

I have never played a game and thought "this would be so much more fun if there were new books to buy for it." I think you are mistaking good games with games that are fun to collect.

I'm no fan of SAGA (by a long shot), but there is plenty of material out there to run a game.

It seems like the easy answer is to just remove talents altogether and make the game about Abilities and Skills.

Gak! That's a terrible idea! Skill ranks is nice and all, but the real fun is the Talents. If I ever have to play WEG again, I'm going to figure out how to make talent trees for the game somehow.

I'm not saying it is an improvement, but if the exercise is to remove specializations then it is the simplest solution. It's not like people are going to make a bee-line to those black die removing talents when they can buy anything they want.

You could also just remake talent trees for each of the skills. Make them all 10xp and give the rows a skill rating requirement rather than the increasing cost. Some of them are pretty much done for you (i.e. Pilot and Slicer).

Most talents would just go away, while others would become abilities that everyone could do (like Dodge). You may want to keep a few in rare instances (such as Lightsaber style talents that shift the Lightsaber Ability used) that could remain (purchased al la carte). Ranked talents whose utility sticks around would have to run off of something other than ranks in that talent.

  14. I have moved towards a more open, sandbox-y, though with a bunch of front-end work to establish NPCs, locations, and plot hooks. If you have read about Dungeon World's "fronts" then that models best my current style.

I would also disagree that the pre-planned game is higher quality. The benefits of being more loose is that your story can adapt and better fit the PCs and what they are doing rather than the on-size-fits-all approach of prewritten material.
