I just remembered the other thing that struck me as unworkable/unfair while we were playing: when I (the GM) ask a player to make a skill check to receive information from the envirnment (such as an observation check, education, folklore, or intuition) is it reasonable to apply the universal boon/bane rules? I think not, since I cannot imagine a situation where a passive roll asked for by the GM should inflict stress, nor heal stress. As the GM I can arbitrarily set the challenge of an observation check (and those in Day Late are pretty hard) knowing that the character is probably going to fail and/or accumulate some stress. Silly. I told the players upfront that the universal bane/boon rule applies only to active rolls they request and that all banes and boons generated on passive checks called for by the GM would be applied towards the quality of information gleaned, with successes determining the quantity. Thoughts? Even in passive situational checks, the mind (and body for that matter) doesn't always cooperate fully. Have you ever had something grab your mind and itch to come to consciousness but you can't seem to comprehend what it is or can't quite get it out properly? Especially in a tense situation where there are people waiting for you to figure it out so you can get back to the business at hand? Maybe you know nearly everything there is to know about something but can't get over the fact that there might be more that you are forgetting. Stressful! Example: You instruct a PC to take an education check to remember what they learned about some topic. Tell them the corresponding information given the success/failure of the roll but 2 banes could represent the fact that they should have known more but can't and are irritated about it. They were trying so hard to remember but just can't. Arghhhh! Two boons on the other hand might represent the fact that either they passed the check, helped the party out with info and are relieved a little about it or that they failed the check but were relieved that they did not remember since it might have been bad news and they didn't want to be the bearer of bad news. Example: On a passive observation check, a PC passes the check but rolls a double bane, it could represent the unconscious mind noticing something out of sorts but can't process it fully (because of the situation?) and get stressed trying to figure it out or they failed the check and got irritated. A double boon might represent relief for spotting something that might help or hurt the group or relief they don't see anything nasty when they thought there might be (if they failed the check). Those were all the RP side of it. Gamewise, stance dice are a factor in checks and if you were to disregard certain aspects of the dice, it would change the dynamics somewhat. Just my thoughts.

Some talents cards in my group is like the latest fashion in Altdorf. Why not put that talent into a party slot? Sharing achieved! And how would you do that in a roleplaying aspect of the game? "Cat-like reflexes" are pretty much an innate ability that you either are born with, or have trained hard to achieve. Sure you could do it according to the rule, but in roleplaying terms it don`t seem right with me. Sure we have "flanking manouvers" put in the party slot. We roleplayed it that the holder of the card, trained the other players for a few hours. The trainer, a dwarf captain (soldier) is trained in leadership and drilled the party. but "cat-like reflexes"? hmmm, maybe the dwarf captain can teach them yoga. I know this is a bit of a stretch (and my group hasn't even used the party slot yet) but why not RP the slotted party card being used as if the character it belonged to did the action instead of the active player who actually used it. Describe the "owner" doing some feat to achieve the result in place of the active player. This might work in some situations and not in others, such as if they were KOed.

They did however find Korden`s hammer and the chaos temple. But by the time they discovered it was dinner time. Although they had picked up the blashemous books from the temple, they forgot it in their room (so the cultists did retrieve the books easily). all ate venison and 2 players where knocked out by it. They where to late to stop the ritual and gave chase to the rooftops, killing or maiming several cultists. At the rooftop they defeated the cult leader and the deamon. Only to witness several beastmen climbing over the walls. The Roadwarden who where allready critical wounded and close to death, did not follow the rest of the party to the rooftop. He instead made an attempt to flee, Upon reaching the stables, he was gunned down and knocked out by the mutant there holding a blunderbuss. Olver Gand the NPC hunter, heard the gunshot and swiftly killed the mutant by setting his dogs upon him at this point it was 3 in the morning. and we ended the session. Not knowing the wereabouts of the Roadwarden the party`s tension is rising. Several of the player-characters are critical wounded, distressed, fatigued or even strained or temporary and even permanent insane. next session they will have to deal with the beastmen. They know they fouled up the investigation, and now suffer the full consequence of it. Respect to my players they intend to make wrong right, by paying for their mistakes. But I fear at least one PC will die. I feel particular sorry for the rat-catcher who didn`t show up until the second session, and thrown right into the middle of it, with only a rudimentary understanding of what`s going on. next session is sunday, and I am anxious to know how it will go. I was cracking up reading this. I think the 3am part might have had something to do with their epic failure. Maybe if they all die you can call it a "demo" and start fresh. Either way, they are learning more lessons than groups that go from A to Z easily. It will help later on ... should they survive.
  5. Kansas is awesome ... if you like cows, wheat, weather that changes instantly and long highways to nowhere. Okay, it's not that bad, at least it's peaceful where I live. (Southeast Kansas)
  6. Uh ... ya! Ha, I am using most of the awesome things that all of you talented people are contributing. Just letting you all know your talents are not in vain.
  7. Any thoughts on Aggression, Cunning and Expertise alottment?
  8. It's at home but it's much smaller. Maybe 5" wide by 8" long by 1" deep or so. Like a sheet of paper folded in half.
  9. I should elaborate. Does Blustar's guideline on conversion work out well? Is anyone running into problems I should be aware of during gameplay? Any success stories yet?
