  1. Dear all,

Thank you for your responses. Balsam for the mind, indeed.

Maybe I should try to be more positive in my attitude and actually start playing these games. In 2009 I've spent about $1.500 on board games, miniatures, card games and so on. How many of these games I've played? Well, about three of them. Talisman, Arkham Horror and various Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. Have I told you I've bought - on a whim - all the expansions for Descent, plus the core game plus miniatures? How many times I've played Descent so far? Zero. Well, for what is worth I am glad I have all of them. I use to open a Tomb of Ice box, read the rules book, pass my fingers over the figurines and play with the tiles, tokens and so on. I've downloaded a Solo version for Descent too. Tried it a couple of times. Did not worked too well, I am afraid. It is interesting from a psychoanalytic point of view. It is all about role-playing, indeed. You pretend to play a Dwarf Slayer in WFR and it works. As for me, I pretend I play WFR even when I am not playing it. Such a sad business. And I want so much to be able to play it! I believe my problem is not with the logic but with the mathematics. I have a completely non-mathematical mind. Literature on the other hand, yes, I can handle that. It is my buisness. But make me use modifiers, do checks and so on. Are we there yet? Gah!

Anyway, once again many thanks to everyone. I will surely print your responses and study them in the next few days.

  2. Dear all,

I've been playing board games, card games, etc for about five years now. One second; let me rephrase it. I've been collecting board games, card games, etc for about four years now. Indeed, I am one of those rare persons who buy a game only for the sake of buying it or more precisely said, for the thrilling joy of having the game. It is a sad affair, honestly. You go and buy tons of games but never play them. The reasons are numerous. For one thing, I just cant find the proper players. Through a minor miracle, this year I've started playing Dungeons & Dragons with some friends from here from Budapest. It was worth the wait. Four years I had to wait to find a group of people playing the darn game. On the other hand, I have to say it. Some games are so hard to get that I regret not having the license to carry a gun. I would rather shoot a bullet in my head than read and learn all the rules. Which brings me to the crux of the matter. I was beyond excited when I first heard about the upcoming Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. After much interior debate, I've decided to go ahead and buy it. The box and the contents were appealing enough. And I was not disappointed. It is a state of art product, impecable, absolutely splendid. Which makes my situation even worse. Now, despite buying, collecting tons of FFG stuff, I am quite a newbie when speaking about actual play gaming. I've tried to learn the rules for WFR. Actually, every morning and every night I open the books and I start reading. And I read and I read until I feel I should give it a second read. Nothing makes sense, I am afraid. The rules books read like a mix of philosophical tract combined with a Republican briefing conference. Plus a bit of Klingonian. Now I am pretty sure I will never be able to play WFR in this life. It is impossible. Yes, very sure of that. Nothing makes sense. Unless you have a degree in math or something similar.

My question is simple: why are the modern games so hard, so complicated to get into? Is this deliberate? Is "fun" equivalent with "nightmares" these days? Whatever happened with FUN?

That being said, tommorow I will order Runewars! Honestly. Yay, I cant wait to receive it. The box looks awesome...!

  3. I want to buy it / pre-order it but could not find any button with this function.

Is it really up for pre-order/buy?

I am ordering it from Hungary so I hope to gods it will be shipped quickly! sad.gif

  4. Thank you Steve-O.

Then I guess I will not buy any of the Runebound expansions.

Take a look at the card called RAZORWING RAIDERS from the Runebound Second Edition core game.

There is a man in freaking blue jeans there! Is that fantasy too?

How can I play such a game? Lovely, flavorful artwork on the box of the game and then you open the box and find all kind of manga, kitsch artwork within.

Sorry, I know it is a matter of personal taste but the artwork for some Runebound cards is the quintessence of the anti-climax.

  5. Thank you gentleman!

I think I will give The Frozen Wastes a try. The sci-fi meet fantasy scenario might be an interesting twist after all. I remember that even World of Warcraft had some sci-fi tricks and gadgets at one moment. It was weird but well, interesting.

Another question, if I may. As I have stated on another thread, the artwork on certain Adventure / Challenge Runebound cards were a pain to look upon. I don't quite understand why FFG gone for an .... anime, almost manga artwork for those cards. Every time I wanted to play the game, my eyes felt on those cards and I could not continue. Too much of an anti-climax.

Now, I know about the different Runebound packs and various small cards expansions. Can someone tell me if the artwork for these cards is better than the artwork for the original game? Or are they still in the same anime style? If they are done by different artist/artists, I'll go ahead and buy them. And replace the original cards with those from the pack expansions.

The same question for The Frozen Wastes. How is the artwork on the Adventure / Challenge cards? Better than in the original game or by the same artist?

    Many thanks!

  6. I am also interested to buy The Frozen Wastes and The Sands of Al-Kalim.

The thing I don't understand is why are these two called "expansions". Do I need to have the Runebound Second Edition in order to play them? I have Runebound Second Edition already but I want something different, like new boards, etc. So my question is: how dependable on the Runebound Second Edition Starter are the two mentioned expansions? From what I've understand, both The Frozen Wastes and The Sands of Al-Kalim introduce new boards, new cards, new miniatures. So why should I need Runebound Second Edition in order to play the expansions?

    Thank you!

  7. Tremendous thanks, JCHendee! I will look into Prophecy and Mythgardia, two games I never heard before. The thing is, I want to like Runebound, I honestly want to but the playing cards put me off completely. I simply cannot enjoy a game with such awful artwork. I am not speaking about the character cards but the actual adventure cards, monster cards and so on. Runebound feature some of the ugliest artworks I've found in a board game. The board itself is not better either. The board for Runebound is certainly not comparable to the one for Talisman, which I love.

Maybe I should try one of the Runebound Expansions... The artwork for the cards for Sands of Al-Kalim seems moodier and not so computer-generated.

P.S. I apologize for my English. Not my first language.

  8. Dear all,

So I've bought Talisman + expansions a couple of months ago. In less than four weeks we've played around 25+ games. Yes, that's how much we liked it. I apologize in advance for the perhaps unoriginal question but I have to ask it. Are there any other games in the style of Talisman? By that I mean a nicely painted board and minis. I've tried Runebound too but the board and the cards are no way so neat as those for Talisman. Not to mention the rules which are a little bit more complicated than Talisman's. I've also heard about The Return of the Heroes, which is supposed to be in the Talisman vein but I cant find it anywhere. Any other suggestions are most welcome.

    Many thanks!

  9. Hello all,

After two weeks of debating and fighting with myself I've decided to buy Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. This will be a major event for me because Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay will be my first pen & paper game. Yes, I never played pen & paper before, only board games [a long time Fantasy Flight acolyte] and card games. I admit I don't know much about the whole mechanics of the pen & paper games but I am very enthusiastic about this game and I am sure I will love to learn it bit by bit. So, my question: is Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay enough for me and my two friends to play it? Is the box containing anything we need? The thing is that now I do not want to invest in The Adventurer's Toolkit and others, only in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Box. In other words, I want to make sure this box will give us all the necessary bits and pieces.

For such a high price, it should!  happy.gif

    Thank you for your help!

P.S. And sorry for my language; alas, English is not my first language.
