This seems like a very sad game to cheat at. If I am opening some random $10 deck at a game store and playing casually with people, and I lose a few games to someone who went to the effort to cheat, so be it. I really don't care. Most people will not cheat like that. If a person is going through the effort to cheat at a game like this, they really need to reevaluate some of their life choices and probably just get out more. Think of how strange/sad someone's life has to be to get them to the point where they are getting significant enjoyment out of cheating at games of Keyforge...

This is sad news. I really enjoyed the design and mechanics of this game. I'll never forget the total joy when I was unexpectedly handed a free copy of the Core Set (then unreleased) when checking in at Worlds for AGoT in 2012. I played this game SO MUCH during the first couple of years. So many amazing memories of tense matches and really fun times.

I think that the LCG model lends itself best to cooperative card games, for some of the reasons OP mentioned. I took a slight diversion from playing MTG to get into AGoT 1.0, and then also played SW LCG, only to see both games die and have essentially worthless cardpools lying around. When I reflect on the total amount of money that I spent on those two games combined, I realize that I could have bought a TON of MTG cards. And, I would still be playing with those cards to this day, whether in Modern, Commander, draft cube, or some other variant. And, not only would I still be playing with them, they would actually be increasing in value. For that reason, I just can't justify ever buying in to a competitive LCG again. I'll just buy MTG product instead.

Yes. The game plays wery well under an hour; especially the core set and the first expansion (Unseen Forces) should grant you a playing time of 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how fast you're at decision making and risk / benefit evaluation (and I assume you're fast considering your background in mathematics). The replay value is very high (at the moment I'm close to 150 games with it and I can go more without problems), and it's certainly a ton higher than Mansions': Ancient Ones come with specific powers and difficulties that should grant variety in the game, and being the board composed by cards, this increases interactions and combinations a lot.
Additionally, starting with Gates of Arkham, we had a series of now 4 expansions, each providing a different setting for the game (specific adventure cards and specific Mythos deck), so, replayability is huge for relatively little money (compared to the investment you had for LotR, for example).
As for the rules: the core set rulebook is wonky, but it's not too wonky, in the sense that after grokking them, you just keep playing, never to look back at the rulebook (so, again, nothing comparable to the rules intricancies of a LotR LCG)

You're going to get a few different answers. And, those answers will be colored by the experiences that the authors have had and their own journeys into the game. Here is my bias...
I have played the game since it was released. I have had insane amounts of fun with it. My experience was getting each new thing as it was released. So, I am in favor of new players getting a core set, playing that thoroughly, and then buying new stuff in the order in which it was originally released. You get the real, organic feel for how the game has progressed and developed that way. Play, play, play, until you feel you have exhausted the "freshness" of the things that you have, and then by another adventure pack or two, etc.
However, there are other completely valid arguments that some of the stuff early on in the game wasn't among the "best" that the game has had to offer, and more fun can be had by moving from the core set into some of the later deluxe expansions.

I hear this a lot, but I don’t really understand.
The large cardpool of LOTR is not an issue as there is zero need to buy everything all at once. Just buy what you like, its nice.

I also commented that the alt-art Galadriel looks like Scarlett Johansen. I swear she was the base for this new Galadriel and also for Imladris Stargazer.

I am of the mind that it is a quite different game and a different experience. Nothing digital can match the feel of being around the table with all of the cards spread out and counters, dice, beer, etc. For me, if I do play the digital game, I will think of one as that awesome, real life, in person, kitchen table type of experience, and the other as that thing that I can play on the bus/train and while I lie in bed at night.

Again only 3 of us this weekend of the Last Jedi LCG tournament this weekend at LCG.  Shad, Ethan and I again did a round robin alternating every game before going out for dinner and later to the movie.  On this weekend I pulled out ahead, but I think the real winner of the day was Guardians of Justice…

I wound up sweeping Shad.  Beating Ethan’s Navy deck after several turns of building a protection shell strong enough to get through his units striking immediately, and then losing to his Cracken deck after building for 7 turns, repelling his attack and then forgetting he had an unfinished business to grab Yoda when I went for the counter attack.  Shad and Ethan split against each other.  Shad kept a hand with double Bones of a Fallen Master master and forced Ethan to get two Promise triggers each turn or suffer a volley.  Objective damage just piled up on Ethan’s side of the board and Ethan did what he could with all his Ewok tactics.  Then Shad draw crap two turns in a row.  In the second game Shad got his protection shell out and Kyle swang in with a lightsaber and with the help of a little friendship is magic cleaved the Chimaera in half.

    Random Thoughts on My Decks

Double Emperor’s Shadow and 4 recursion enhancements is dope.  So much card draw

Force Choke continues to be an amazing combat trick.

    Kallus Fist is real

Pattern Analysis with all the recursion enhancements is pretty sweet.

Using an expendable scout to draw into exactly the card you need feels like cheating

Krennic Posse doesn’t card how many guns you have

    Funeral Pyre makes Palpatine sad

Not having a mission out makes Boc sad

Sith Lightsaber is sweet but needs more than 4 targets in the deck

Well Equipped is terrible when DS needs to defend and amazing when you’re ready to attack

    Mon Mothma is solid ramp

It’s hard for DS to focus you down when you have the Rex objective out.  This makes Kyle Katarn happy.

Rebel for Hire is pretty sweet for getting Cassian chuds, or allies of necessity, or on the rare occasion grabbing Kyle.

Mon Mothma’s ability evidently reduces cost every phase?!  So Shad pointed out I could Rebel for Hire to find Rebel for Hire and then next phase Rebel for Hire again to get Kyle.  Thins the deck!!

Battlefield engineer feels like he should be amazing with Trust Your Feelings.  But sometimes the only way to win is to try to dig for friendship is magic and then refresh your supply cache when you declare to dig again.  And if it’s against Ethan it always works!!

Luke and Kyle like to mess things up.

Rex feels largely over rated, but likes to show up late game to be a 3 bomb unit.

The best part about Mon Mothma is her black tactics.  Tyler knows what I’m talking about!

    Plays of the Day

Turn one against Shad I double focused an objective to play Kyle, trigger pushing back the empire, play a guardian and attack in with friendship is magic.  bye bye board.

Shad playing a main every turn against Ethan and complaining about not being able to find his protection.

Ethan taunting me with his LS deck’s infinite combo potential so I would get mess up and use Sensor Array on things that didn’t need to be canceled.

All in all a great afternoon.  Our regional is Jan 6th and there are just too many fun decks to try right now!
