  1. As with all my Miniature games I am involed with….to many, but not enough. Currently (1 core set and 5 expansions): 3 Tie 2 Tie Advanced 2 X-Wing 1 Y-Wing and now the soon to be released Slave 1 thanks the this weekendsKessel Run tournment. I only started a couple weeks ago. Initially I bought just enough to build a squad for the tournament, but after winning Slave 1 I could not leave the store without a X-Wing and Y-Wing so I can field a 100pt Rebel force at home. Future Plans with X-Mas and B-day on the horizon: 2nd Core set X-wing expansion Y-Wing Wave 2 wants: 2 Tie advanced 2 Awing Falcon

I pre-ordered, and still haven't received my package, so I'm assuming it still hasn't been released? I thought I heard someone say FEB this weekend, but that made no sense as they obviously have some stock in order to do the Kessel Run event.
  3. After seeing a few options at the Kessel run tournament as well as pictures online I am wondering what others are using for a gaming surface? Obviously the game can be played on any surface, but nothing gives it that space feel like a nice star field surface. At the tournamant we played on 3'x3' pink insulation board which worked OK as the standard gaming table is not wide enough. One player brought a beautiful star map complete with Death Star that was printed on vinyl and worked well (sorry no pic right now). On the way home I stopped by the fabiric store and picked up 1yrd of Balck Marine vinyl which I cut down to 3'x3' ($16 total cost). I knew from my Naval Gaming experience that Marine vinyl makes an excellent surface for holding minis as well as rolling dice, yet folds/rolls up for easy storage. For now it is plain black, but I may do some minor paint alterations in time. I kind of thought FFG would come out with a printed mat of some sort simlar to the Wings of War mats they did in the past. As this is the only space game I am currently playing maybe the market is already saturated with them and I am unaware. Even so if FFG produced a liscensed product with Star Wars on it I am sure it would sell. In the mean time what are you using?
  4. DeadInkPen said: Okay so then why does the FAQ say when you move through multiple obsticles (ie: asteroids) there is only one damage roll and not multiple. Also the first step says to skip the action phase of the ships turn. The TO said that neither step one or two applied to moving through them. I always assumed that it was those two steps happened, and the loss of the attack was in addition if your move actually ended up with the ship on top of the obsticle. So that raises the question if he is right on steps one and two not applying to moving through the asteroid, then what title the section moving into and through obsticles? A few people purposefully flew threw them. So if there is no penalty for doing that, its almost worthless to even have asteroids in play. In the case I would say the TO was clearly wrong. qouted from the rules passing through an obstacle causes the player to role one die (no matter how many obstacles they went through that move) and lose the action. If they land on the obstacle they role a die lose the action and cannot attack that turn. Further more depending where they land on the obstacle they may have to role again next turn to get off the asteroid. That is the whole purpose of having obstacles to make ships manuever or take the chance of suffering damage.

The low dodge ability (even with the stealth device) means it can't really go toe-to-toe against concentrated rebel attacks. Other fighters HAVE to be deployed to draw fire away from the Firespray while it plinks off enemies from a distance. Especially in Fett's case, since the Slave one can slap on proton torpedoes to give it great firepower at range. You hit the nail on the head. I just finished playing my first scratch game against my son. 3 ship rebel build (Wedge, Luke, Ywing) and he decimated my 60 pt tricked out Boba Fett with Howlrunner, Obsedian and Academy pilot. Removed stealth on first attack and it was all downhill from there with poor die rolls. Managed to take out Wedge, but that was after firespray was eliminated. Firespray is a powerful ship, but does have a glass jaw IMO. Its two agility is no different from an X-wings. So you can turn that argument around to be that an X-wing is a powerful ship with a glass jaw. There is a balance factor to this ship. Yes the stealth upgrade can give you an extra agility for a total of three, in addition that ship has the evade action. Plus from where I sit there is great reason to always take the heavy laser cannon over any other secondary weapon. Sure you may not get the crits, but a permanent four attack dice range 2-3 attack is really powerful. Plus you even admited that you were having poor dice rolls. One match is hardly enough to make enough to make a decision on. By all means I was not trying declare a trend based on one game. I was just stating that it is vulnerable to being ganged up on and can be beat especially if your die roles are sub par. The other issue that I struggled with in my tournament game as well as the game at home is keeping it at distance. Everytime you move your are advancing an minimum of 3 distance because the base is a two. This means that you have 1 maybe two rounds before the rebels can move in or you have to circle taking away your heavy cannon as they cannot fire out the back arc. I am just saying it is powerful, but does have some vulnerabilities and can be beat even by standard rebel squads currently in the game. When you match the tie and x-wing they basically equal each other out on attack and defense at range two. The firespray starts at a disadvantage on defence against most rebel weapons and because of the size it is likely to bump into things and lose the ability to evade. Definately does bette ron an open map…..in tight asteroid field manuverability is going to be an issue. It will be interesting to see how different strategies develop over time.

  8. Darth Lupine said: Sure you can, as long as its different pilots and titles. You could have Boba in Slave 1 and Kath Scarlet flying her own Firespray. Exactly…only one Falcan and Slave1 title card and one unique pilot, but you cold field as many ship types as your points will allow.
  9. Olethros said: I basically won the final of the Kessel Run using her with the Heavy Laser Cannon, the gunner and expose. I Had the option of using Boba, but didin't saw any advantage in that… hmm…it appears many id not use the assigned tournament squads. As for Boba the ony adavatage I see is possibly bringing weapons to bear and the 1pt pilot ability. The pilot ability can now be upgraded by 2 for cost of 1 pt. As it stands now Kath does seem to be the better oilot with the upgrade for the same cost.

    Buying cards

Not yet, just in the ship packs so far.
  11. Yes, the A-wings put the hurt on me in the final match along with the 360 firing of Falcon. Match ended on time, but he climed both my Tie int and I only downed 1 Awing and removed a couple shields on the Falcon. The new ships and upgrades will add alot of new dimension to the game.
  12. I placed 2nd out of 6. Vader+swarm tempest Howlrunner+swarm Backstabber Academy There were 4 IMP squards and 2 rebel. I lost the final match with Slave1 wwhich ended up being my prize. Started a little after 1PM and finished about 5:15PM. Since I actually played for the first time last night I was happy with the results.
  13. Tawnos said: Sounds like you've got the core set, a TIE expansion, and 2 TIE Advanced expansions, then? I forget exactly what comes in each box, but if you can, give this squad a try: Darth Vader, Swarm Tactics (31) Howlrunner, Swarm Tactics (20) Backstabber (16) Tempest Squadron Pilot (21) Academy Pilot (12) Forget the missiles. I'm not anti-missile/torpedo necessarily, but unless you've got some ability to improve their efficiency (like Wedge or Horton), I find that they add a lot of uncertainty to your squad for their point value. In my experience, dropping the missiles and upgrading to Howlrunner and Backstabber will net you the extra dice you would have gotten off the missiles over the course of a game, and you can do it without needing to waste actions on Target Locks for missiles. Howlrunner's ability doesn't affect secondary weapons, so taking named pilots with primary weapon abilities (like Backstabber) over missiles makes Howlrunner that much better. Also, with Howlrunner you afford yourself a second Swarm Tactics, which will bring the Tempest and Academy pilot up to the high end of pilot skill in combat, leaving your lowest at Backstabber with a 6. Swarm Tactics doesn't cost an action, either, which is one of the reasons it's so powerful. A successful strategy for this kind of squad will be to rush the Tempest Squadron and Academy pilot out front, attempting to get in the way of your opponent's movement, causing collisions and denying them their actions. Then, use Swarm Tactics to bring them up to the top of the firing order during combat. Ask Doug (aka Hothie) about this tactic if you want to know more. Make judicious use of Evades to protect your squad. You're only 5 ships; that's light for an Imperial squad, so every point of damage you take is going to hurt badly. Focus fire to the best of your ability, and try to keep everyone in range of Howlrunner (at the very least Vader and Backstabber). Good hunting! I have gone back and forth, but I think this is the build I am going with. Lacks the big first punch, but with good synergy and some lucky dice I think it can do well.

    Dice APP?

Parakitor said: I bought the App because I reasoned that it was cheaper than the dice app. I don't think there is a way to change a result, sad to say. You just have to use your imagination. It's something they may fix if they ever make a version 1.3. Kind of what I figured unfortunately….It would be nice if they are able to re-write it so it works within the context of the rules. Granted it can be used for other games, but as far as X-wing I am not convinced that it has any advantage of regular dice and may be more cumbersome. I will try it a few times to give it a fair shake (pun intended)

    Dice APP?

I am new to the game and faily new to the whole smart phone/tablet. I decided to download the dice APP. I think I have it figured out with one exception. I know how to re-roll dice, but is there a way to change a die result without re-rolling the die? Obviosuly this would come up when using focus. It is not a deal breaker, but would be nice to see dice with the actual results for quick comparison. Otherwise the APP seems useful.
  16. Nice, I am a battlefoam guy, but am waiting until I get more ships to commit to something. So far the core box is working OK, but I am sure that will not longer be the case after the holidays assuming Santa thinks I was good this year.
  17. Battle Damage said: Couldn't a lot of the angst about players not knowing of the existance of POD expansions be removed by putting a flyer or similar into the starters and expansion sets? There's already a FFG catalogue (which mentions POD for other FFG systems) and other advertising propaganda in the starter box: Just add another piece of paper that says "Hey kids! Check out www.fantasyflightgames.com/PODTotallyCoolNewS%$tPewPewPew for addtional X-Wing cards!" Everybody wins. Pretty much sums up what I was saying if they go this route. Again, my only concern is the information is out there so that "all" players know an item is available. While the majority of players do have internet access I do not think the onus should be on them to go and search for information. If FFG effectively advertised it with the basic products they are selling via traditional distribution means then I would have no issue with it. While some may cross over from CCG to Miniatures gaming where the internet may be more of a common tool for playing the game my point was that is not always the case for a traditional miniature gamer. To make assume otherwise is a pretty bold assumption and I believe false. That was my point. As long as the information is out there in a printed form (flyer) and does not rely soley on forums or word of mouth to get the word out then it levels the playing field so to speak and does not create an unbalancing issue that some are concerned with. Like I said I do not have much experience with PoD, but is sounds promising and a way to keep a game new and exciting without the company having to invest alot of resources and take a huge gamble. It seems like the product design would be the only real investment for the company.
  18. magadizer said: I appreciate you expressing your point of view, but I don't understand it. I don't see these "average players" you speak of. Do people with enough disposable income to buy this game not have internet access to look and find out what the available products are for it? No, I am sure most do, but I think you would find that the majority just do not do it. They buy what is on the shelf open the game and expect to be able to play. this was a huge issue with Axis and Allies minis and they issued revised cards via that internet. Mnay players did not know about it unless someon in the group was on the forums and then there were always the debates of which cards to use. Just look at the membership of this and other forums related to X-wing. The game would surely not be as successful as it is if we were the only ones supporting it. I am just saying that if they go with an online ordering system like PoD then FFG will need to make a concious effort to advertise it in stores and include flyers in the expansion etc. We are living in a tech savy world, but not as many people as you may think take advantage of it. I have to kind of laugh if the expectation is for the average gamer to go online to learn about what is availbale for a miniatures game.
  19. magadizer said: A deluxe set sounds cool, but I hope they don't go that route. The main point many in this discussion are making is that certain unpgrades are more expensive to obtain in real dollars because of being limited in how they are available. Deluxe sets will make this problem worse, not better. Yes and no, I am not saying it is the solution to the problem, but would certainly help the new gamer jump in and catch up with minimal investment, Purchase a core set and a deluxe and you would instantly have one of every ship and two sets of game aids. Some sort of booster pack be it pre-printed or PoD would be the way to solve getting extra cards. I guess the real question is what is the game designers intent. If it is to limit the amount of upgrades on the market then there is no real issue. I just discovered that one of the squad builders out there has scans of cards. Using cut and paste I know for home games I will be just printing out pre-configred squads on one sheet of paper and foregoing using the cards which will keep the game are less cluttered, so it is really only an issue for tournaments as long as your gaming group concurs.
  20. magadizer said: I don't see how offering people a less expensive way to obtain the desired cards is unbalancing the playing field more than the current setup. Either way you are limited to buying what you need, but currently you must also buy what you may not need/want in order to get it. Either way you are limited to buying what you need, but currently you must also buy what you may not need/want in order to get it. (For example, duplicate large ships) I for one do not think it is unbalancing as long as they are available to all. Not being familiar with PoD I would be more in favor of it being a pre-printed booster pack sold in a B&M store if that is the route FFG wanted to go. Reason being I do not think the average gamer is savy to PoD. It is proably a very small percentage of gamers that visit sites like this. If I did not I would have no idea what PoD is. Now if FFG fully embraced the PoD concept and started putting info flyers in all expansions for players to order additinal cards I would not have an issue as all players would have the opportunity. It only becomes unbalaning if only a minority know about it via forums like this one and the average player thinks they have to buy extra expansions to get extra cards.
  21. I am warming up to the PoD idea if it was something sold only through stores and individuals did not just order them (Unbalancing the playing field argument) similar to the exansion packs that have been done for wings of War. Not requiring a card for each ship in tournament play would also resolve this issue. Another thought I had that has proved successful for the Wings of War line would be a deluxe expansion set. Now that we have wave two coming out release another core set that includes 1 each of the Tie Advanced, Tie interceptor, Y-Wing and A -wing(ships not in the core set). Include all the basics that were in the core set as well as all the upgrade cards and pilots released to date. So it is not just another copy of each ship give them each a new paint scheme and another pilot or two unique to that paint scheme. Do this for MSRP of $60 or less and I think they would sell as fast as the current core set and compliment it as well. As an example Wings of War releases 4 planes in a set with 3 paint schemes of each model(12 models total) and then a 4th paint scheme of each model is only available in the deluxe set. They include all the game mechanics and updated rules in each deluxe set so you are getting the complete game for what the 4 models would cost or less. Just a thought.
  22. I do not have any experince with PoD. My only concern is that not all casual gamers would be in tune with it and it could create a disadvantage to those that know about it. FFG already has a precedent for releaseing card packs as they did multiple times with Wings of War. I would definately be in favor of that. I am new and so far really like the concept especially since I am a WoW/WoG player. I do see not including more upgrade cards or selling an upgrade pack as a major drawback especially since the upgrade cards that come in the expmasion packs are not unique to a specific ship.
  23. Very interesting, I will toy with these suggestions tonight. Thanks
  24. Wow, good advice on the swarm as it is more versatile than the higher cost tie adv. Yes, you are correct I am working with the 5 ships listed. Appreciate the pointers.
  25. I am new to the game….I have yet to play. I was talked into jumping in with both feet in time for the Kessel run event this weekend. Without really knowing much I bougth a core set and some ties. Now that I have read the rules the rebel route would have probably been the better route. Oh well, it should be fun and I really do not want to buy anymore with x-mas and a bday around the corner. So anyway does this build stand a chance? Open to any ideas for tweaks with what I have. Vader w/cluster missiles 33pts storm squadrom pilot w/cluster missiles 27 pts Bckstabber 16pts Academy pilot x2 24pts 100 pts TIA, Aaron
