One of the reasons that Nexus Ops is preferred over other conquest games like Risk, TI3 and the like is because you cannot win Nexus Ops by turtling. To win you have to attack, so if you spend the game turtling and building up resources, the two or three guys that pounded on each other will all finish ahead of you.

I will buy it, I already own the older one but it is starting to show signs of wearing out. I think it is the best of genre of games (DOAM).

I have the original as well, and have played it three times this year. One way they could improve the game is drop the advanced rules (does anyone use those aliens?). MoV is an example example of teh "pick up and deliver" mechanism, and really, it is at it's best with 4.
I quite like it, as do most of my friends.

I think I replied on this awhile ago, but have moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The tourney (IMNSHO) went well. The champion went undefeated throughout the game. He commented that the last scenario made him feel like there were advantages to the French attacking (which is what I wanted)..

I am finished the testing and ended up with the Hundred Years War as the scenarios. I like the restriction of the card set so it will be easier to teach any newcomers.

The reason I picked the other two is because then both sides get a neat gobbo or stunty thing. I could use Battle Cattle and Halberdiers but I am not sure it would have the same flavour as Gobbo Slingers and Stunty Axeswingers.

So this is my third year of running a BattleLore tournament at our FLGC (Friendly Local Gaming Convention; )
and I want to change it up a bit. The last two years I ran using the Call to Arms expansion, but I am thinking of using both the Dwarven Battalion and the Goblin Skirmisher Specialist packs. What I am going to ask you guys is which expansion packs do you like the most?

To stay in the FFG world, there is also Runebound, it is an above the ground game that uses the same characters as Descent, plus it has a multitude of expansions. Doom is similar to D:JitD but is set in the computer game world, it has a strong following (I think) but to make the game better you should have the expansion (which I don't).
I am a big fan of Advanced HeroQuest (I ran it in the 90s) but I find it is a little more fiddly. You can also combine it with Heroquest and make a different game. There are lots of additional adventures online for it as well. If you like rats, AHQ is also great...
Hmmm, any other games I could suggest?

I like using the variant from Commands & Colors: Ancients, when you hit the correct number of vp, your opponent has 1 turn to tie you. If they tie you continue playing, if they exceed you, you have one turn to catch up, etc.

I have the base game, and others tell me the expansion "fixes" the game. I like Doom (but play Descent more), so is there a good reason to buy the expansion? How much better does it make Doom?
Thanks

Granted, I have only played Kingsburg once, but I found that if you have poor die rolls (aka consistently low) you have a hard time winning, similar to an island settling game...

I tend to find that 2 player games are about 20 minutes and about 5-10 minutes per player after that.
One a side note, I taught the travel edition to a 6 year old and her father a couple of weeks ago and it took them 30 minutes. He came back the next day with his other daughter and they played three player.

Drat, this is what I originally came looking for. I create the scenarios for our local game con in the scenario editor, this way they look better then my hand drawn scribbles.

Two player would not be very fun unless you add a third player as a dummy but still it would be limited.
