But what is a wolf? What defines such a thing, beyond its name? It is suggested - in The Thousand Sons, and apparently in the forthcoming Prospero Burns as well - that the Wolves of Fenris are not wolves at all, but the bestial descendants of mutated human colonists from times long forgotten, the cost of pre-Imperial genetic engineering that allowed humans to endure on a world so hostile as Fenris. Right...::Rolls his eyes:: Thousand Son Media brainwashing is obviously full of fail. I will never read The Thousand Sons book, as it does not interest me what lies was told in that book. Prospero Burns however does. If it is mentioned in the cannon then anyone who says that FSM can't exist will be pointed out that humans were turned into wolves, so Yes it can happen.

BaronIveagh said: That's something that's always bothered me: how do you have 'remnants' of someone's genetics? Particularly if they're genetically engineered supermen? I mean, given how important the Primarch Project was, even if the lab was blown to smithereens, one would think that they would keep backups and samples off site in a secure location. It's not like chaos whisked them off as soon as cellular division took place. Remember this is the Grimdark future. The Emperor didn't keep backups.

No Wolves on Fenris? What? Confused now. There are wolves, and there are massive thunderwolves. All of this is mentioned by the scribes from the dawn of the Imperium. Now the Thunder wolf calavary is not mentioned much outside of the space wolves. Also I have seen people of a different faith, say mormon and Catholic go at it. When the Catholic chaplin got involved the Mormon was still upset and saying things about how catholics are satan worshippers or some such. Eventually that Marine was put down by the rest of his platoon and order restored, but it was not due to the efforts of the Chaplin.

Brother Praetus said: N0-1_H3r3 said: While they fulfil the same battlefield role (and are sufficiently close to be represented the same way in game terms), Rune Priests aren't Librarians in the strictest sense; the Space Wolves don't have a Librarius, and they apparently never have had one, instead using shamanic battle-psykers developed as an extension of Fenrisian traditions rather than in the more standardised manner of Codex chapters. Just as importantly, the Space Wolves are known for their lack of adherence to the Codex Astartes, and consequently will invariably ignore things like Codex-mandated colour schemes for specialists except where it serves their purposes. You're preaching to the choir here, N0-1. I'm a HUGE Space Wolves fan. I was merely pointing out that the bluish-gray of their armor technically falls within the Codex Astartes standard for Librarians, as the shade of blue is in no way standardized. -=Brother Praetus=- In the Great Companies color schemes can change, Not only in their great company symbol. Also there are the number of Lost Companies in the Space Wolf fluff. Some of which left Fenris and never returned, mostly do to differences with a new great wolf or some other such. Which is why in my Army, I used the old crusade or HH color scheme, more of a shadow grey then that baby blue for my wolves.

But yes the point holds true for your redheaded Step Children across the ocean. i'd rather have the royal marines than USMC as most the SBS are royal marines and they are as tep up from SAS who incidently train a lot of other country special forces. I can Agree to disagree, being slightly biased. Which I am sure you are to, being English or having been a part of the Royal Marines. Which is fine. But I just seem to remember 2 wars which the USMC won against the English. Still it is important to remember that most of the original US Marines came from the Royal Marines. So the USMC Came from Great Stock. (Prepares for the onslaught of attacks from his cousins across the sea. Not trying to start anything, just being a Jarhead has to defend his brothers. )

Royal Marines. Bah...USMC Baby!. But yes the point holds true for your redheaded Step Children across the ocean.

That depends really, one to each company may be the norm for a codex chapter. But the Black Templars, Space wolves, and Iron hands are not Codex chapters. For instance in the Space wolves, Wolf Priests are part of the Great Wolf's Great Company, along with all the Iron priests, dreadnaughts, and Rune priests. So the number of them is unknown. If you want to go with the standard 1 to 100 for a chaplain (given that codex chapters are 100 man companies) then it could be more like 24 to 30 wolf priests in the Space Wolves chapter (given that I have seen numbers ranging from 2000 space wolves to 5000. Even if the 5000 is highly questionable). The space wolves are known to have more then 1000 marines. Still their is not much that the High lords can say or do as the Space Wolves are highly unlikely to break their oaths with the emperor.

Well to the space wolves, they honor the emperor as the greatest warrior, the only one to beat Leman Russ. Thats about it....

You must let him go, or the bat people with become upset.

Read the Space Wolf books, there is a little more to them than just charging in as well. I mean they do do that, but its the character of the wolves that carry the day.

Tarkand said: ItsUncertainWho said: They need stuff left to put into other books? And the fact Chaplains are very complicated compared to the rest of the specialties. I kinda agree with this. They obviously went with a 6 by 6 matrix here (6 Chapter, 6 Specialties). I'm pretty sure we can look forward to seeing the Chaplain make an appearance down the road. I would assume so as well. I think that it will need a section all to itself as well.

Balseraph said: Ciaphas Cain is fun. I love the idea of a Commisar who is the anti-thesis of everything they are portrayed as in canon. A coward smart enough to not blindly run away, a cross between Flashman and Blackadder. Dan Abnett is the best 40k writter! and Gaunt is the greatest Hero of all time. This is just to keep the controversies going on. Also Dan Abnett is never going to do the space wolf novel for the HH line of books because the The Thousand Sons players poison him or redirect his attention to the Smurf Movie.

I think that your all forgetting that in squad mode, only one person makes a Fear check, and if he fails it you lose some cohesion. Not a big loss. Solo mode you gain some Insanity points, but not much, you dont even run away. So all a psyker has to do is switch to squad mode and he is fine. Fear is more effective on those NPC. Also I have some doubts if the WP modifer counts against WP, unless your making a fear test. Thats just me though. So just take it with a grain of salt.

Personally I think that the reason chaplains are left out is because of the different views of the different chapters. Some view other chapters as being close to heretical. Look at the Wolf Priests, they are different from the rest of the chaplains, in more ways then just a different view. They are also the Apothecaries for the Space Wolves. How do you do the rules up for one Class when for different chapters they do different things. Also you have to deal with the whole interaction between different chapters. Just something to think about.

Brother Praetus said: BaronIveagh said: Kryptykfysh said: To return to the topic at hand: Dark Angels armour is black, not green. I thought that was just Pre-heresy and Ravenwing? Not that I really followed DA at any point, in all honesty, other then to use Cypher in my old IG army Their armor coloration depends on to what level of secrets they have been entrusted with. Typical Dark Angel armor is dark green Ravenwing is black Deathwing is (bone?) white. Other then that, I can't recall if the Chaplains and Librarians differ from the "codex" norm. -=Brother Praetus=- I remember seeing a chaplin wearing black in terminator armor.

MILLANDSON said: BaronIveagh said: I'll stick to Flashman in space... Adam: um, frankly, it's not that great, or that imaginative. He uses a lot of situations from the real world, just like Sharpe does. He just puts a 40k spin on them. And, it's lacking something to be Sharpe in space. Gaunt hasn't slept with every female character he meets. Aye, Gaunt isn't nearly as good as Sharpe in space, as much as it is trying to be it. I still say that, out of all the 40k books I've read, the Ciaphas Cain ones are (joint with Eisenhorn other than the stupid "fight the titan" bit) easily the most enjoyable out of the lot. I assume you believe the same, Baron, from your post? Actually... Ciaphas Cain is more like Sharpe in Space than Gaunt, because he has the constant aide/sidekick Jurgan (like Patrick in Sharpe), and he does actually end up sleeping with 90% of the women he meets. This, plus it being Flashman/Blackadder in space also, is probably why I love it, and why I was so glad to be able to have a 10 minute conversation with Sandy Mitchell at Games Day today whilst he was signing my copy of "The Emperor's Finest" (the newest Ciaphas Cain book *squeeee* ). Well thats where we have to agree to disagree Mill. Gav Thorpe...well I can't say anything nice about the man. I am just glad Phil kelly did my space wolf codex.

Yeah some of the stuff is hard to find, Game Indexes alot of times miss somethings. That has to be my biggest beef with some of the FFG books. Ross take note: work on the index for quick references, I have the GM Screen but a full write out from the book is sometimes helpful.

Artaxerxes said: BaronIveagh said: I'm not a big fan of Dan Abnett, but his work beats, say, Gav Thorpe or Graham McNeill (who seems ot think he's still writing WHF). Gav Thorpe needs to be hit with a stick until he stops moving. About the only Inquisitor thing I liked of Abnetts was the short story of the retired guardsmen murdering locals, the rest I felt distinctly meh about. Gaunts Ghost was fairly readable but was basically just Sharpe in space so i didnt bother keeping up with it as we all know Gaunts going to make it and is going to be always right about everything Yes it is sharpe in Space. But I like the Sharpe Movies and the Sharpe in space novels as well.

MILLANDSON said: Fair enough, just found out that you can post pictures on RPOL, so I probably will put them up there too Just got back, and it was brilliant! Tonnes of stuff to see and do, FFG had about quarter of one of the halls to themselves, with tonnes of people buying DH/RT/DW A couple of the FFG staffers on the stalls chatted with me for a bit, and had about a dozen random people (sorry if I've forgotten who you were ) come up to me and start chatting away about RPGs and RT. Awesomely, Andy Hoare was there, and he recognised me too (he surfs the FFG/Dark Reign forums frequently, apparently) and I annoyed a whole queue of people by having a 15 minute chat about roleplaying and our own RT games and groups, and all that stuff, so that was sweet! All in all, a great day out! I'll try to have the photos I took up over the next couple of days. Glad you had fun man. Cant wait to see those posts man.

In my opinion, I believe that space marines have been conditioned to not care about such things. Flirting with women is the norm, after all ragnar and the space wolves do make passes at women. Sometimes it can back fire on them. Still I think that the hypo-training of their minds has made it so that they just do not feel the urge to reproduce, mainly because they are normally fighting all the time. In the case of space wolves I see them as the type that would rather drink and talk and play norse type drinking games in their off time, with fellow warriors even if they are females, then to try to get them in the sack.
