Licenses are out of their control as has been proved in the past. Therefore you are certainly 'safer' with Arkham and L5R as there are no 3rd parties involved. GoT and SW both have those 3rd parties (not that I am suggesting that either of those two licenses are at risk)

This is quite the topic. It all comes down to, they say you are not engaged with said enemy, but your actions are affected as if you are engaged. Going by the literal definition of engage, it's to occupy or attract someone's attention. In the terms of massive, the game plays out where the creature is not specifically paying attention to us. Its attention is on multiple things at once, otherwise you'd be able to draw its attacks to you when they attack, instead of it attacking everyone.

Was that Gaiman's Law? Someone's Law anyway, some author. The first time an author opens their printed book, no matter how many times it has been edited, they will immediately see a typo.

The joy of typos. It appears to be a universal rule that you can write something, proof read it three times. Publish then read again and immediately notice 2-3 spelling , punctuation, other mistakes.

That probably no one else sees...

Matrim reacted to Mon no Oni in Release Schedule
To be fair (and I could be wrong about this) I think FFG never "framed it" in any way. They announced it that way and we all made educated guesses as for their rationale. Obviously, we were wrong.
Now, we can make even more educated guesses: 1) The original 6-in-6 worked well enough for them. 2) This seems is going to be the release model for the game going forward.
While I personally see more cons than pros after the original cycle; the pros are still there: an stable pool to explore for around 6 month, as opposed to a gradually expanding pool. The cons are the 4-5 months void of no releases and almost no news could (and did) sometimes feel soul-crushing...
On the other hand, I see again people claiming this is the end, dropping the game, play groups disbanded, dogs and cats lying together... While I have no doubt some of these claims are factual, they are nevertheless anecdotal. Let's face it, attrition is always going to happen; for some ``people the release schedule is going to trigger it; but most times it was going to happen anyway. I honestly don't wan't to diminish their reasons, but they were already on the fence if something like this makes them leave the game. When FFG bought the IP, they wanted a competitive game  (and in light of that the 6-in-6/stable meta scenario makes sense) and a commited player audience: these will keep buying the 6-in-6 cycles (some happily, some grudgingly, some indifferent either way),; as long as that core audience keeps buying and playing, losing a small (even if vocal) minority has little bearing. What is important is that recruiting trumps attrition, and as long as that recruiting targets the core audience of competitive, commited players, the game is healthy.
In any case, if this is going to be the release model and if somebody is listening, I suggest they make sure they make better use of fiction in the intervining gaps. For the first cycle, the fiction was closely tied to the pack releases (filling the gaps between chapter fiction), but then nothing for months. Using it instead to fill those months would keep us more involved, speculating about the plot and future cards is what made AEG's game to keep the audience engaged even if there was nothing new at the shelf between releases.  Or even, something like the Phoenix novella, with a couple of preview cards, around February, would have done lots to fill that void and served as a preview to the Phoenix Pack.

Thanks @Matrim. The Magic Madhouse one is on my list, yeah. Maybe my expectations were just too high, my local store is very active in most games, just not L5R. And I'm used to a super active and friendly X-Wing community where you can turn up almost any day of the week and get some games.
I'm not travelling to any of those other towns though, I'm not that committed! Quite hard to travel to the odd one-off tournament when you don't get regular play in-between.
I might try the London L5R group too, thanks @Caldera. Worried I might have gone too far to get back into it, but I might give it a go.

London? big place and has more than 1 store (apologies if you are London USA as I am assuming UK). Let us see there is a Stronghold Conflict at Magic Madhouse in london on the 24th March, so this weekend. Oo they are holding a Stronghold showdown on the 2nd April as well. If that doesn't work (and perhaps you are SW London) then Woking is just down the road (and oy train) and they are also running a Stronghold conflict at the weekend.
Aldershot and Reading arent that much further and also can be trained too and also are running stuff.
To be frank you could also easily get to Birmingham, Brighton, Northampton, Southampton who also have active stores running tournaments. Though i will grant you would need an hour and a half to a couple of hours to get to these dependant on where in London you are.
The game is actually surprisingly active if you are willing to travel a small distance to get somewhere.  I go to Sheffield for my tourney games which is an hour and a half to two hours depenedent on traffic but I could also go to Loughbourough (20 mins away) if I had Thursdays free (I dont) and am looking at potentially Northampton ( hour perhaps) and Birmingham (hour) or Nottingham (40 mins) or Milton Keynes (hour and a half).
There is actually a plethora of current gaming opportunities should you be willing to spend some effort to travel.
Now I understand that it would be lovely if a local store just down the road had lots of players and supported the game. There are two FLGS in Leicester and neither is supporting the game (as far as I can tell though one does stock). In this case you have two options. The first (and harder) is to try and build that community yourself by buying from the store and demoing and attempting to gather interest. This is harder than people think especially since in the UK (at least) it sometimes appears some FLGS dont actually want to sell you product (I went into one of the stores in Leicester and asked them to order me a booster box of old5R and said I was happy to pay in advance so they would not have to order at risk and they said 'no they dont support it', this actually amazed me as they were basically throwing money away because it appeared the staff could not be arsed). The other is to travel where it is played and support the GS there. The second option provides games and keeps the game healthy.

Perhaps this is not for you or you are unable to travel (cash poor, age constrained, other issue). In which case I wish you luck in your gaming endeavours and suggest you pick games that are popular in your preferred store to play in future.

Or you could play online and always find an opponent. Try the Discord league for high quality opposition and their is also a more casual discord server for players who are perhaps not so competitive.

1st world problem. I can think of lots of sadder things but if that's the worse that you can conceive off then lucky you.
Your assumption as to why the break occurs is also conjecture. More likely is that most FFG have noted (and commented before) games suffer a lull in interest due to lack of card variety after the core set release so they decided to capitalise on interest and increase the available card pool to counteract this. Unfortunately the lull still occurred but just later.
That does not mean the game is dead or dying or they have no plan to support the game post launch.
If anything I think the staff at FFG have too many balls in the air Hanlon's Razor says 'Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.' and though I would not go far as stupidity I think they failed to plan and did not realise quite how rabid the fan base was.
