I'd be careful throwing around "facts" like that.
It's just as easy for someone to randomly post
"I don't know a single person who has told me that  SolidusPrime  doesn't kick puppies"
While factually accurate it has a certain implication to it.

There seem two main groups of angry people in this thread. The first group seems very distressed that people (including me) are saying essentially 'if you dont like it then come to worlds and win out and make the choice yourself'
To drill in to this ets look at my own example. Did I get to worlds? no. Why?

Cost - i Live in the UK and could not afford the price of transatlantic tickets, hotels
I have two small children and a wife who works evenings and weekends. For me to take time off for worlds she would need to stop working hitting us in the pocket further
Even if i had atteneded I would be unlikely to do very well and win the comp as I am, to be fank, not very good so my attendence would be for the experience.
ALL these are under MY control. I COULD afford to get to worlds if I perhaps said to the family 'no holiday next year', or stopped buying books and computer games or pokemon cards for my eldest son. I could probably afford it quite easily but *I* made a decision that paying the mortgage and looking after MY family is the right thing to do
I could also become a much better player. I could travel the UK to competitions (stopping my wife working at the weekends) or I could do online tournaments spending less time with my boys or perhaps stop them playing football so I have more time to improve as a LCG player but I don't and that again is my choice. Not FFGs or other players
I beleive ALL these decisions are the right ones and if those moaning that they cannot get to worlds honestly look at their lives they will see that they too are (probably correctly) putting other things above a card game. THEREFORE I have no issues AT ALL with people who do make these sacrifices (maybe lesser ones but this isn't a measuring contest) doing so, winning and getting to choose whatever they please.
Most of us here are adults and most of us here understand that as adults (caveat: allowing you dont live in a dicatatorship etc) we get to make choices about what we do and how we behave. This is why I find all of you getting upset and moaning 'I couldnt get to worlds I could not afford it' as an excuse for moaning about someone who did so ridiculous.

The other moans are the people complaining that the reason for the choice was weak. It wasn't. They could have done it for any reason at all and that would be great as they put the effort in and had the talent to win. Just as a disclaimaer I was equally distressed when Doji Saori was corrupted deliberately by a Shadowlands player playing Crane but lived with it as that player deserved the pick regardless as to their reasons. Live your life and own your decisions. Trying to complain about other peoples will get you nowhere.

Also, the 'word going around (true or not)' comment rankles. I can outright tell you it's not true. I'd suggest that's worth sharing with your local players, if it's a genuine concern over what happened. I'd also point out that if it had happened (as in, if Brad had finished higher than me and made the pick), he would have been doing so out of a desire to make the game more enjoyable for others. Folks can argue about the validity of his conclusion, but it was absolutely a noble and unselfish act, and personally, as someone who has worked in games stores and built local communities for the games I love, I'd choose to focus on that in an effort to help my local scene grow.

Except the part where you stated 'I don't know a single Scorpion player that was happy with the decision' without the qualifier 'among the customers of my store', dude.

While it's admirable that you care for your customer base, you also have to realize that they aren't a representative sample of Scorpion players. While it's easy to resort to anecdotal evidence for whether something is liked/disliked, it isn't nearly enough to truly base large scale opinions on how a singular group of people feels about something. And when using that as part of an argument about that groups opinions, it comes off poorly and ill informed.
Your customer base may not like this, but they don't speak for everyone. It's important that you cater to their needs, but you must also realize their opinions and needs are not necessarily representative of the whole.

Are you only talking about local players? Because if not I can tell you right now I'm not only in favour of Seeker of Void, I'm the one who suggested it to Mark, so that's two Scorpion right there. Plus a large portion of the Scorpion attending Worlds.

And it not only works well with current Scorpion decks, it fits perfectly into the Scorpion Defensive Dishonour deck that Mark piloted to finish Top of Clan and make the choice of Role going forward. So you can tell your local players they have little to worry about.

Honoring/Dishonor victories are not NPE, per se - it's the amount of interaction with your opponent needed to achieve it that can be.

If the bulk of the ways you dishonor/honor out is because you are forced to participate in conflicts, play cards with conditions your opponent can play around, etc, then it's totally cool.
But the old solitaire rockets are not fun.

Not upset in the slightest, sorry if it came across that way. And that's great you had such a good turnout for your release event, I suppose my only concern is for new players and out of towners who weren't there for the initial decision, but sounds like you'll bring them up to speed on how you do things. I don't agree with what y'all decided, at least for official OP events, but you do you.

Seems like a genuine question, and while it's getting frustrating explaining the same thing over and over, I'll give it a shot one more time!

Couple of very important things to get clear straight away. I'm the person who made the pick, and I also made the pick for Scorpion at GenCon where I topped Swiss on the Friday,  meaning I picked before anyone else. My deck in single core ran Seeker of Void.
The Dragon Hatamoto who surrendered his Hatamoto status because he felt strongly that Scorpion with Backhanded Compliment would be something that would negatively impact the game for the next twelve months is Brad, and he was willing to shoulder a considerable amount of abuse by trying to take top Scorpion so he could pick a non-Keeper Role.
I've only met Brad at tournaments, but man, he's a seriously cool and friendly guy. So much so that he sought me out when I arrived on Thursday to make sure I wasn't angry or upset with his plan - I absolutely wasn't, because one person willing to take on every other Scorpion player present because of his desire to make the game a better experience...man, that's absolutely epic. I understood where he was coming from with his concern - Brad is a highly skilled and talented card gamer, so he wasn't just pulling this stance out of thin air. I clarified with him that he just wanted to take a non-Keeper, and asked that if he was in a position to make the selection, he would at least pick the best Seeker possible for us. He was happy to do this.

Bear with me on a couple of little tangents here. I've been friends with Jon Butler for many years. He's one of the best Scorpion players I've ever met, but he's also someone willing to put aside personal achievements in order to help run events (and indeed the Dojo of Lies forum and Loyalty of the Scorpion FB group). Although we first played against each other during the Samurai Era, Jon knows I played Scorpion back in the day (more on that in a moment), and we talked a lot of strategy and nonsense over the years.  I asked for his advice before the Kiku Matsuri, and he offered not only some invaluable tips, but even gave me his deck list to run. He talked through his selections and his strategy, and I went on to do really well with the deck. We conferred about what Role I should take, and our conclusion was that even though Seeker Void was better for the deck, Seeker Air wasn't far behind and would give the clan a great chance to do well at Worlds, while keeping Void available for selection at Worlds for the next twelve months. That's what I went with, and immediately upon making the selection and receiving the Role trophy, I walked over and gifted it to Jon...he had absolutely done all the hard work, and I'd just rode that to success.

Other tangent. I'm a player of corrupt decks and factions. I bought into L5R at the tail end of Imperial, picking up the only starter deck my local trader had in, which was Phoenix. I was down with the Taint from the first moment I paid seven gold using that stronghold, and switched over to Scorpion when they became a playable faction as I like playing the bad guys. I did very well with Scorpion at a time when they weren't considered a viable faction, culminating in making the final of the Battle of Kyotei Plains at UK GenCon 1999, the biggest storyline in Europe at that time. Before the final, I approached Mindy Sherwood-Lewis, who was there running events for AEG, and asked if it would be possible to cede the tournament storyline result to the Mantis if I won...both my quarter-final and semi-final opponents were friends of mine who played Mantis, and I had two incredible games to make it into the final (the game in the last eight against Ian O'Brien remains my favourite game of cards in any system to this day, eighteen years later) - I wanted to show my appreciated and respect to them both, and felt the story team could make it work. At the time, Scorpion and Mantis were locked in battle in the story, and my request (which ultimately didn't matter as I was absolutely smashed by Darragh Long's Unicorn deck in the final) didn't sit well with some of the other Scorpion players present. No-one said anything to my face, but complaints immediately sprung up online (back in the days of the clan Yahoogroup being the main hub of activity), and I decided it would be better to just distance myself from the Scorpion playerbase at that time...I don't respond well to bullies or intimidation, and I have little time for those who put an imaginary story ahead of real world friendship and respect. I moved over to TO duties, helped run some excellent events, and spent the next few years playing pretty casually, including championing the Shadowed Tower to convince misguided Greek Scorpion players that they were the righteous path. I did return to competitive play with corrupt Phrats and concede in the final of a Kotei, but left the game during Lotus before returning with Samurai Edition with Spider after a very good friend pointed out to me that a faction had been designed that would essentially tick every box with me. It did.

Whether people consider me a 'true' Scorpion player or not is up to them. I can point at memorabilia accumulated over two decades or the fact that my online handle is my original Scorpion PC from 1st Edition, but ultimately, I have neither the desire nor the inclination to jump through hoops for others. My friends know me, and I've earned the respect of the people I care about. I'm already tired of trying to correct those with limited reading inability and a tenuous grasp of what occurred. It's 2017...most people have decided what they think happened already.

So, to try and wrap up this epic...the decision to chose Seeker of Void was made before even arriving in Minnesota, for the reasons articulated far better than I could by Jon elsewhere. Brad's decision didn't sway me, but it did definitely help solidify the choice I wanted to make. I chose to give him the shoutout when making the selection because he deserved it and I abhor bullies. I respect that others have differing views on what should have chosen, but I work in a gas station for barely above minimum wage and I sacrificed a lot to make it to GenCon and Worlds so I'd be in with a chance of making those choices, so forgive me if I fail to take the anger and vitriol spewed my way too seriously.

This decision was made with a clear conscience and with the intention of giving Scorpion the best chance to win more events going forward.

We have people that go to Worlds and Gen Con almost every year. Just because we decide to ignore one  rule doesn't make us "insular" lol. We regularly have people placing in the top of a lot of major competitive games out there right now. X-Wing, 40k, Star Wars. We are far from "insular".

But there were 47 people at the release event. Only 3 of them cared enough about the Keeper/Seeker thing to vote for using it, and those 3 weren't terribly upset when we decided to ignore it. We know the implications. We aren't 12. We'll continue using these rules for ALL events, so get upset if you want to, but that's how it is. Our players have much more fun this way.

Seriously, those complaing about the results, why did you not go and play for your clan? If your not planning on being a tourney player anyways, then none of this affects you.
Grow up and compete or organize your clan if you want to be making the calls, or stick to non tourney games where you can play whatever you want.

To be clear: Brad didn't make the pick, I did. I gave Brad props for what he had tried to do, but my intention, since getting the first pick at GenCon, was always to go for Seeker of Void.
And as an aside: all my victories this weekend were by dishonour. Most of my single core victories at GenCon (where I actually played Seeker of Void) were also dishonour. We're already more than capable of consistently winning that way.

Good of the game before good of the Clan. Always.
I'm fine with people disagreeing with the choice. I earned the right to make it, but I still absolutely solicited the opinion of many people I respected before commiting to it.
If anyone wants a different role, I wish you the best of luck, and I'll see you at Worlds this time next year.

Usually something like that indicates that Phoenix would be a deck with some nasty tricks, but weak once players learn how to play around it. Now that we're on day 3, we're seeing more skilled play, and people are managing Phoenix ring conflict effects better.
