    Excellent nice to see another thread helpfully focusing on banzai, would read again...
    I agree you are flogging a dead donkey if you are trying to get it back not helped by the over reaction to the new chant. Being from the UK myself and a historian by training  I can say that though the UK is still over focused on ww2 most people here would not associate the new chart with the ss. In Germany there might be eyebrows raised at a group of people shouting 'for honor' but Germany has moved well on from the war (for obvious reasons) and both the UK and Germany have enough issues with real fascists that a shout at a card game competition is unlikely to make much impact.
    I don't know personally if I would do the new chant mainly as being British we tend to be reserved and shouting in public is a little embarrassing though happily joined in with the banzai shout..
    Ffg have done the best they could with a bad situation. Incidentally has the ssasd people been told of the change and asked to add an amendment to the review? As it is still one of the few major games site reviews of the game out there...

    Yeah, right now in dragon, with our very balanced skills, there is very little reason not to attack twice on most turns, but even if I never run any of our favor matters cards (and I very well might never run either of them), if my local meta starts running theirs then I might have to attack less every turn so as to have some glory up for the favor lobby, and since most of the favor matters cards are snowball cards, we might even start to see some players spend an entire round not attacking just to get the favor away from an opponent with one of those peeps out. While I can get how that sort of play environment might be unfun for some people, I do like the sort of high value decisions that not only matter but are also actually hard to make. That's an issue I have with a lot of card games in that the top tier decks tend to just play themselves because for any given hand there are plays that are just objectively the correct thing to do, almost regardless of what your opponent is doing, so there aren't really any real decisions to make, and so while I enjoy the deckbuilding and theorizing, the gameplay can be boring. However in l5r, the gameplay matters so much more than the deckbuilding, to the point where I'd posit that a great player with a mediocre deck will do better than a mediocre player with a great deck under most circumstances, and now that the favor will actually matter, that's just one more skill that needs to be mastered to get better at the game. Personally I like that focus on tactics because it's something that's missing from too many games, imo.

    Let me get this straight.  In L5R I need to focus on fate management, the many and varied decision points, the potential plays of all the other clans, tie breaker stats, and the following:
    * social justice
    * Nazi sympathizers
    * Marxist/Leninist history
    * the merits of one ritualistic chant versus another
    I have to say that is more than I expected when I picked up my core sets.

    Bad dynasty flood can be mitigated by conflict chats and possibly passing early and accepting a couple of province losses whilst building for a better board state next turn. Dependant on situation of course.
    This is one of the few games I play where bad draws don't matter so much and allowing you don't panic early reversals can be countered.

    It helps if you can find a clan that you enjoy playing regardless as to result. I am losing a lot at the mo but as I am enjoying the games and i still get to do my thing it does not matter.

    The Conflict Deck represents "hidden things". Since the very concept of employing such hidden things that fly in the face of the Bushido Virtues of Honesty and Sincerity is considered to be dishonorable, then relying on such hidden things is, by extension, also dishonorable...and the more you rely on them, the less honorable you're being. That's why the Draw mechanic increases your risk of losing honor the more cards you draw from your Conflict Deck. The Goblin Sneak lives in the Conflict Deck for that reason (and also so that you can't drain away your opponent's Fate during the Dynasty Phase!) So, in an abstract way, the Goblin Sneak does "cost you honor".  Now, yes, I realize that you can easily draw a Goblin Sneak(s) without losing any honor at all, depending on your bid, but this is a pretty elegant way of reflecting that the Sneak is a dishonorable kinda thing to be putting into your deck. The fact he's a "sneak" is a further way of showing that sometimes you can get away with wallowing in the realm of the Taint. Again, this is pretty abstract, I admit, but it works well enough for me as an explanation.
    I tend to agree that a straight Honor loss for playing Shadowlands cards is problematic from a game and card design perspective. That said, I COULD see losing Honor for playing Shadowlands Dynasty cards (should such a thing ever exist...and let me hasten to add, despite writing fiction for the game, I have no more insight than anyone else into what cards are coming--so don't take my musing as signaling anything!) If this was the case, to make it worth playing them, they'd have to be corresponding powerful, with high Military Skill (but probably very low, or even "-" Political Skill) and/or strong abilities. If you're going to openly use oni or other Tainted monstrosities to achieve your ends, then you should be facing considerable risk in the court (of public opinion). However, you should also then gain access to very powerful cards, the idea being you win big and fast through mostly Military means, or you lose big and fast when you get dragged down to 0 Honor. Shadowlands cards should be high reward/high risk, especially if they come stomping out of your provinces. Playing a monstrous oni out of a province could even break it, along the lines of Akuma no oni in the CCG, as the Taint corrupts the land thanks to your vile summoning rituals...

    Losing honor for playing shadowlands worked in the old game because the sheer scale of the honor board was from -19 to 40, meaning losing a point here or there wasn't the end of the world. But in this game honor is directly tied to drawing cards.
    Shadowlands, any faction, should never have honor losses built into them out of principle. The game is flavored by the story but not bound to it. Honor loss was a bad mechanic that didn't nothing but hamper play design. Shadowlands cards should just be weird cards that have a mechanical feel to them that they share eventually, not a penalty that makes them liabilities no matter what.

    Every clan and faction has the potential to be villainous, at least from the perspective of some/all of the others in Rokugan (not "evil", because "evil" is a particular thing in Rokugan, generally involving things connected with the Taint of Jigoku). The Crane are quite capable of being ambitious, scheming, self-serving jerks...but so is everyone else. I'd hope, in fact, that over the course of the story's evolution, we would see every clan filling the role of both saint and sinner...often at the same time.

    Unsurprisingly perhaps Mantis appear to be making a play to be a great clan (expansion box anyone).

    What I have really liked (so far) is how the fictions are intertwining nicely. Kachiko to further her clans names makes Yoshi have the meating with the crab knowing he would be unamenable thus creating more tensions between clans with the Crane, as yet, not realising they are being manipulated. The Crab meantime look to help the Mantis to fulfill war aims when the mantis piracy is one of the reasons the Crane could refuse to help in the first place.

    New L5R has a great differential, the rings. They affect the board state significantly each turn and can help you recover from bad draws, they effects can be compared with 1 cost events.
    The dinamic of draw/honor and spend/save fate also affects much the gameplay.
    Some events can be game-changers like Display of Power or For Greater Glory, but I feel the devs always be cautious of getting a drawback for great cards, in this case, besides the costs, both are dead cards once the stronghold is reached.
    There is very powerfull new cards, like Ujiaki, I've been testing him and with the favor it is really a little OP, basically grants you a conflict, but again, there is a considerable drawback, since it have more than 50% chance of doing nothing for 5 fate cost..
    I don't think we have this "who plays first the card X or Y" wins the game, there is a lot of ways to change the board, and the feeling I have is the game is a lot more about gameplay than luck.. Some players will run 6-7 holdings and blame luck for having a bad dynasty flip, others like to run hard-to-play cards like fallen in battle, so of course deck construction makes diference, but does not guarantee your victory in this game.

    THIS.
    Old5R was a snowball. One good turn usually meant that next turn would be even better. Come-from-behind victories were few and far between.
    Nu5R is a pendulum, or a tug of war. I can't tell you how many games I've had where I thought for sure I was in a tough spot I couldn't come out of, only to find that next turn I come out to win it. Or vice-versa. More so than any other game I've ever played, the game isn't over until the very last moment.

    It's playing out how I expected it to honestly, but it was still an entertaining read.  I would assume if this culminates in Mantis becoming a great clan we can expect some sort of in game fulfillment of that.
    I do worry about them being added too late to the game though.  Hopefully they won't be too behind in the card pool when they do finally get released.
    I do really appreciate that the fictions on the site and in the card packs are interleaving.  It does make it feel like a very coordinated effort.

    The group of us played last night and I managed to get in three games total, one of which I actually won. My first match was against a Lion player and my opening dynasty cards were horrendous so I took a mulligan for three cards and got an even worse start. I was however able to come back from what is arguably the worst start I have ever had and gave an impressively good fight to stay in the game. The Lion player was not terribly happy when I kept using Earth Ring on my political conflicts and playing Spies at court to wreck his hand several times (which is what kept me in the game), in the end he managed to get a good draw just before the last conflict and he wiped out my stronghold.
    My second game was a Scorpion mirror match, my opponent was a new Scorpion player who formally played Phoenix but switched. That game was seriously messed up and despite the two of us having very different conflict decks we both were equally matched.
    I won my third against a Crane deck.
    My point is that even though I lost 66 % of my matches the two I lost were incredibly good games and super close. I know you said you were getting kicked pretty hard but keep up playing. You will only get better by playing players above your level, even if it slow progress.

    Welcome to Rokugan!
    Don't get discouraged.  This happens a lot to new players.  Most important thing is to learn all the cards and get really good at understanding the rules.  Winning will come.
    If you want a little jump start, why not post what deck you are playing with and what kinds of decks you typically play against.  If you've come across any particularly bad beats, try describing what happened and I'm sure all of us armchair quarterbacks will be willing to help.

    It was nice to see Heaver playing a crab list which was very different than mine. 2 very dissimilar lists broke into the top cut, was interesting to see both getting good results
    Also @kraken78, I don’t think Matrim is out of line with the comment. As one of the guys who made it feel more “like a local tournament than a Kotei,” I feel a bit offended by it.
    Tim Wells I consider to be one of if not the best Lion player out there, Kyle Wislocky was top Crane here and top 16 at worlds and is one of the best Crane players out there. This is my 2nd large event in a row showing as the top finishing Crab. Everyone I played in the top 16 gave me fantastic games. And there were quite a few strong players who didn’t make the cut.
    You’re entitled to your opinion that the overall field may have been weaker than worlds and that’s fair, this was a regional/national level event compared to World Championships. You should probably say that in a way that doesn’t insult everyone who was there though.
