  1. Sooooo...

I really like this expansion: since it does not add any special Mythos-card-triggered effect (like King in Yellow did), it is easy to add it to any game without messing it up (I usually remove 22 base-game Mythos cards and then add the 22 new ones, so that I won't even know which rumors/headlines/else are going to happen).

But, as many of you already noticede, this expansion is, rule-speaking, quite a mess.

Since I am not going to wait for any FAQ or errata, here is how we home-ruled it. All the following has already been tested and proved challenging, funny and balanced enough:

    1) Bound Ally pact: When you gain a bound Ally, put a Power token on it. you may only spend or discard that token by discarding that Ally. Should the Ally be discarded, you still keep the "Bound Ally" card (so you can't get another).

Behind the curtains: this makes players always-or-so having at least one power token which, as you know, is often a "dangerous gift". This makes the pact quite dangerous, thus balancing the heavy ally benefit.

    2) Blood pacts /Souls Pacts: you may only have one of each (as the game already says), BUT you must choose only one of the two listed effects when you get the card. The "you may spend a Power token as either 1 clue or 1 sanity" always applies.

This fixes things up pretty much in my group's opinion.

Also, we like removing one random Reckoning card, so that we can't be sure whether a single effect is going to take place or not.

    Hope you enjoy ;)

  2. Hi folks,

it's been a while since I posted last time, but I haven't stopped playing this lovely, addicting game.

I just started playing with the Lurker expansion, which i really like (the Relationship cards really help making games easier, thus balancing 3-players games with, say, the Innsmouth board).

    But.

But we got a problem here, Houston.

Say, Dexter Drake with his personal story accomplished, OR that lame-going Daisy Walker (who we removed from the box, but you never know).

    Add the Heal spell.

    Add the Blood pact.

What you get is a combination even lamer than Cloud memory + Heal.

It really happened to us, and were almost disgusted with how easy the game became for Dexter.

Ok, having too much Power tokens might be dangerous, but that allowed him to gain huge amounts of wanna-be clues that he could spend like to Crush Dholes bare-handed or so.

I think the the developers (who keep changing, if you noticed) lost sight of the game's balancement and original mood.

I bet we're going to savagely home-rule this and other issues.

This game should never have gone further than Dholes, Flying polyps and Tommy-Guns.

It's starting to look like a 1920s Dragon Ball game.

  3. Talking about Arkham Horror- 1987 Edition:

    mattherobot said:

In other words, no, haven't played it -- but from what I've read, it is far less advanced than the current edition.

You shouldn't believe to what other people say: the 1987 edition *IS* a lor more "basic" than the current one, but that doesn't mean it is less amusing: it is easier to learn, quicker to run and still funny to play.

Furthermore, monster movement, and damages to Sanity / Stamina were better balanced.

Oh and it was even harder somehow: there only were a few Elder Signs and no clue tokens: Victories were only scored by closing all gates, so Elder signs just helped in preventing a few gates from opening, but nothing else.

Check it out. I got two copies of that game and sometimes we still play it.

    dj2.0 said:

but yeah, I still got mine :) It has been played with many many times over rainy days (Im from Britain, so no shortage). The box cover is still awesome :) The GOOs could show up on turn 1! And yet the game would roll on...

What do you mean with "Britain = no shortage"? Is the game still printed there?

I've got to agree. Even though we treat Final Battle wins as a win, Yig is still higher up than Azathoth for us. We tend to pass on both whenever we draw them randomly, but at least with Yig his Epic Battle cards can be meddlesome. Azathoth is just kinda meh.

Have you whiniy guys ever played the very first edition of Arkham Horror, far back in 1987?

'Cause it worked just like Azathoth does now: if the Doom Track hit 13, Arkham was dooomed and the whole town collapsed and shredded into time and space.

Uh, and there were no GOOs: they actually were monster pawns.

I remember playing a game in 2006 where Ghatanothoa, Cthulhu, Shub-Niggurath and Yog-Sothoth spawned at the Silver Twilight Lodge after a few monster surges.

And we managed to win gran_risa.gif

  5. Which expansion? Well, I mostly recommend three:

    - Dark Pharaoh: it's very thematic and flavoured BUT makes the game kind of easier. That might be both an advantage or a disadvantage, you decide.

-King in Yellow: veeeery flavoured and enjoyable. Adds more stuff than Dark Pharaoh but turns the game into a hell on earth, so beware!

    - Innsmouth Horror: a must have if you like spitting your own blood on the game board. Very challenging. Veeeery interesting Great Old Ones. And you get personal stories for investigators too. And adds the most challenging extra game board.

Now it's up to your tastes.

  6. oh mamma santissima mia I'm going to feel guilty about this. I mean, i'd love to have any of these as a pet.

Eihort is great. I love the terrifying idea of being infested by its wormy brood. It's my playing group's favourite KH GOO.

And Ghatanothoa... well, along with Quachil and Eihort is in my top 3. corazon.gif

Hurt... oh boy I kind of don't want to do this but... I'll hurt Glaaki: I loooooove it as a GOO and its AH version, but its effects often do not even come into play in most of our games.

  8. What's wrong with Quachil uttaus, you wimpies? gran_risa.gif

The game's name is "Arkham Horror".

Do you get it? Arkham. Horror.

I'ts not "Hello Kitty's Happy Picnic in Arkham".

That said, that's why I think Quachil Uttaus and Ghatanothoa are great: they're scary.

And the're not so difficult to beat. Come on, there's no big deal in being devoured, unless you're counting victory points, or you had a great equipment (I usually happen to lose much of it, so I'm glad to be devoured 51% of the times it occurs). When it occurs, you just start a new investigator. Period.

If we're collecting so many monster trophy, why don't we give them a minimal chance at least? gran_risa.gif

In my opinion, Quachil is somehow even more enjoyable than Ghata: it makes you feel the "Damocles sword". It hunts you down ruthlessly.

You can even scale its difficulty up or down my deciding that, say,  you only have to spend 1 clue to avoid drawing his cards, or that you draw 1 dust card eveytime you draw (or read?) a Tome- which feels a bit more the original short story.

I wish Kevin and other developers had been so creative from the very beginning of this new edition of Arkham Horror: Cthulhu, Hastur and other GOOs would not have been that big disappointment then.

  9. So, here's my list and my very reasons:

    AH:

    ---like---

    Michael McGlen. Reason: I'm Italian.

Joe Diamond. Reason: I like **** Tracy and trench coats.

Dexter Drake. Reason: I like his attitude.

Darrell Simmons. Reason: explorig and having encounters is my favourite part of the game.

Monterey Jack. Reason: he's very difficult to play- which I call challenging- and I love his special ability.

Bob Jenkins. Reason: his skills and starting possessions make him one of the best all-round characters.

Jenny Barnes. Reason: Bank Loan strategy.

Carolyn Fern. Reason: probably the best spellcaster so far (since I just *removed* Daisy from the game).

    ---dislike---

Amanda Sharpe. Reason: I never get to use her ability more than once every 3-4 games. And she sucks at about everything.

Sister Mary. Reason: a nun casting such obscure spells deserves getting LITAS straight away! And I don't like her God mumbo-jumbo plot.

Vincent Lee. Reason: slow. Useless. Boring.

Kate Wintrop. Reason: what's the fun in preventing gates from opening?

Jesus! Wait, what? Is that from the Innsmouth rulebook? Those bloody "notes"! First Quachil Uttaus, now this guy? Are there ANY interesting AOs in Innsmouth who aren't made less interesting by the clarifications?

My group has been playing it according to the text on Ghathanathoa itself, which says that when you turn over the deadly Visage token, it still doesn't 'reset' the other tokens. So if someone is devoured by the first of eight tokens, you can be sure that you get three safe clue-pickups before you flip the tokens and risk devouring again. That was my favourite aspect of it - it seemed like a nice counterbalance. Not that Ghathanathoa hasn't wupped our asses every time anyway.

Well, I strongly disagree with you.

I started LOVING Ghatanothoa for the same reason you criticise it: because it is an investigator-maiming machine. It's pure sadism. It's pure HORROR.

And it's easy to home-rule it so that you reset the tokens after drawing, say, 2, or 6 according to the difficulty you want to have.

You could even change its effect into forcing such investigator to draw a Madness or Injury card.

I mean, you could even say "ok guys, if you flip its visage up, then you gain $10"- get what I mean? gui%C3%B1o.gif

Means you need 2 successes to pass the check. So at least 3 Luck or Clues. Pages 12 and 13 in the rules.

Actually, a Skill(-1)[2] check would require at least a score of 3 (so that 3-1= 2 dice rolled), or TWO Clue Tokens (since clues do not suffer penalties- should you be asked to roll a Luck(-999) check, you could still spend 1 clue to roll 1 die.)
