but say your piece and move on. This game HAS a place in many people's gaming library...just because you dislike the Collectible aspect doesn't make it "wrong" or FFG "bad"...this is ONE game out of a huge variety of Star Wars products.

personally, I am looking forward to potential draft and multi-player games with this (A light, fun Star Wars dice/card game)

 

I find that playing at the local level is my happy middle ground. It's way less cutthroat but still scratches that tournament itch. I can play competitively with a deck that costs maybe $40, and I'm sure the same will be true with this game, maybe more so, depending on how popular it ends up being from store to store.

i'll admit i'm casual in my gaming.  this will probably be my Christmas gift to half my family this year.
 
I loved epic duels the old hasbro game where anyone from star wars could fight anyone else.  this continues that.   and i'm a saga lover.  So glad to see all the movies available here.   i'm going all in on this game.  Gotta get qui gon and mustafar

I liked the game play alot! It seems alot more star wars (thematic) than the lcg. You start with your team of heroes and they work together to defeat the enemy team in a duel. Not 100% sure how I feel about the collectible nature of it, but if they can create a fun draft mode I'll be on board.

Also Star Wars has a better theme IMO. Blindfolded, I could throw a dart in my FLGS (hypothetically of course) and have a decent chance of hitting a game about dueling wizards, even if we're barring Magic itself.

As a newcomer to the game, I'm looking for a clan to "join" that I can really learn about and love. I'm wondering about the story arc of the Mantis clan because it's a clan I want to like...but the story arc on l5r.com is a bit of a turn of for me. The story arc there makes Mantis sound like childish whiners. They feel disrespected, their champion is nicknamed "sour disposition" because people don't openly acknowledge his clan as the best, and he won't ever rest until all Rokugan acknowledge Mantis as equals, which to him means that Mantis "stands above" the rest. So is Mantis championed by a self-centered ego maniac? According to l5r.com, Mantis profess not to care what others think about them, but they are in fact deeply bothered by other clans possibly looking own on them. Sounds like vain childish behavior to me.

I'm trying to put a cool spin on these story elements because I want to like Mantis, but I'm struggling a bit. How do you Mantis players interpret the story? Thanks. (and sorry if I've offended anyone's honor, I'm just simply trying to understand what I may be missing here)

For good and for ill, the Mantis are sorta the Ric Flair of Rokugan: "If you don't like it, learn to love it." While far too much of their portrayal was from the angle of the Yoritomo family, the Yoritomo-led Mantis are very much of the "no one would dare, huh? Let me take a whack at it" persuasion. They're all about audacity in a culture where most people are about conformity. The fact that the Moshi, Tsuruchi, and Kitsune all have a different approach and worldview is often unfortunately swept under the rug, and if the Mantis had ever really been shown to draw strength from their internal diversity, I suspect a lot of us would like them more, because each of the four families of the Mantis has something cool and unique to offer.
 
Note, however, that your initial impression is one I personally hold, which is why I'm very much NOT a fan.

Okay, I meant to post this earlier but new page disease made it pointless, but I just want to make it clear that my comment about the game was a joke. I didn't realize it could be taken as a sincere jab at the artwork, which I agree is a very good tone-setter for newcomers.

It's mostly broad strokes and a bit outdated, but still mostly good I think.
 
Major updates I'd make are:
 
1) The Dark Naga is dead.
 
2) Iweko I chose her older son Seiken as her heir. She then abdicated in favor of him so he's now Iweko II.
 
3) Iweko II made is brother Shibatsu Susumu Family Daimyo and Spider Clan Champion. Diagotsu's son Kanpeki responded by threatening to have the Taint start affecting people again unless he was allowed to remain Clan Champion. Iweko I (in probably her most competent move since becoming Empress) responded by saying that she knew a betrayal like that was inevitable and the Celestial Heavens had taken steps to ensure it wasn't possible. Kanpeki left to begin an open insurgency in the Colonies.

Another reason it shouldn't matter is they don't appear to come with the dice, so you have to have the standard cards anyway.

Corrected for u Friendly reminder: Lucasfilm is in charge of creative decisions, just like Marvel and Pixstar run their own.

I want to see Clone Wars and Rebels characters eventually! They are canon and have started making their way into the other games, so I suspect we'll see them eventually.
 
It would be interesting to see a Clone Wars aged Anakin before his fall then you could do Anakin vs Darth Vader.
