  1. These are good ideas, guys! I hadn't considered using mutants. And I'm kind of bad at remembering all of the stuff that they've put into the books.
  2. Hey, guys! I'm planning on running a campaign based on the "Eight Dark Virtiues" (aka the seven deadly sins + "Truth," the big boss battle) and I'm finding myself a wee bit stuck on what to do for Envy. All the others I'm pretty much golden for (Pride=warp dabbler eliminating competition; Wrath=horrible murder spree mystery; Gluttony=nurglite cannibal cult; Sloth=divinatory cult inflicting nightmares on a hive; Lust=performer using a daemon-killing violin to feed souls to daemons; Greed=pirate ripping off a planet by posing as a rebellion-fomenting demagogue), but I'm a little stumped on Envy. The easy route would be doing a whole "acolytes get caught in a coup" schtick, but that feels like I'm phoning it in. I have a basic idea of three different Ecclesiarchy factions having a three-way battle royale over who's right (and being pitted against each other, each using different methods, by the Grand Ecclesiarch who rules over them), but I'm not sure it fits right. Any suggestions?

To borrow an example from the last of the Dawn of War II games, Ork Freebootas can be hired by just about anyone (for example, a rather desperate Inquisitor with a great hat), often for some very strange currencies (like battle against a specific number of enemies, at a time and place of a Kaptain's choosing). And, as others have pointed out, there's an entire clan based around interactions with humans. And even beyond that, there's the fact that orks love to fight; doesn't matter who, or why, just so long as they can get stuck in, and fighting alongside the Imperial Guard against something else is a **** good way to find a good fight. In light of these, the two are a pretty good match. Conversely, IG and Chaos don't make a particularly good pair, since...well, any IG that pairs up with a set of Chaos is a traitor and is thus part of Chaos anyway. As for Chaos/Dark Eldar, it's a pretty unusual combination, but there are some examples of the pair fighting side-by-side (especially when followers of Khorne are involved). The only issue they have is with Slaanesh (who wants to finish the job of soul-devouring the entire Eldar race), which is why they hide in Commoragh (yes, I know I misspelled that).
  4. Actually, the Blood Ravens were invented for the original Dawn of War game, and have been the focus ever since. Raven Software has never worked on a Warhammer 40K game (according to their develoment list, found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raven_Software). More on mock-topic, I think it will be interesting to see how sub-factions (Space Marine Chapters, Ork clans, Eldar Craftworlds and so on) will work in the game. It's possible they'll build in the ability to construct sub-faction specific decks as an optional system, which I think would be pretty neat (imagine two different Chapters going head to head, for example). Then again, it could be just flavor text and have no real bearing on mechanics, which would be pretty cool, as well. Of course, this is all just speculation until we can get our hands on the actual product, so we'll have to see. But I, for one, am excited.
  5. A clota is a type of livestock or hunting target, I think, since part of the narrative does mention the acolytes breakfasting on clota meat. The name, I assume, is the innkeeper's attempt at making a good name for his establishment like all inkeepers are wont to do (like the Broken Drum, for example...+10 Nerdiness if you know what this is a reference to).
  6. Wow, I'm amazed at all of the positive responses I received and great advice. To all of you, thank you! (This extends to everyone who posts after this, as well). You all provided some really, really great advice, and I'll do my best to take it all into consideration. Knowing my players, I'll have to be VERY flexable. Thanks again! Oh, and for those who are interested, I'll try to keep a record of the campaign's progress and post it up here when I get a chance.
  7. All right, here's the basic plot. The Acolytes run into a group of heretek cultists on a mining asteroid that's fallen silent after their ride (a Rogue Trader captain 'convinced' to ferry them to Scintilla by their Inquisitor) decides to take a look and see why the station has gone quiet (and also to loot). When the smoke clears, they'll find that the miners had discovered some sort of inner chamber in the asteroid right before the cultists showed up (they'll also have to run screaming like little girls from a pair of Necron Flayed Ones["animated statues"], but that's mostly cinematic fluff). Upon arriving on Scintilla and being introduced to the Inquisitor's contact, they're sent to break up a xenos artefact smuggling ring, as well as capture the leader of the ring to see if they can find out where they're being supplied from. While there, they find crates marked with the same symbol (a gear broken into eight pieces) that the cultists were wearing, containing warp-tainted weaponry and equipment. The story branches here depending on whether or not they capture the leader. If they do, the contact will be able to find who is supplying them and send the acolytes in disguise as the smugglers to bring the supplier (a House Krin noble) to the Emperor's Justice. If they don't, then the contact will find a link from the warehouse they raided to another one owned by the noble and send the acolytes to infiltrate the storehouse. This is where they will first discover who the cultists are (Brotherhood of the Shattered Machine) and that they're gathering all sorts of xeno tech and forbidden knowledge for some purpose, as well as that the noble is helping to fund them and pawn off the tech they 'aquire' but don't actually need. After this...well, I haven't really set up that far, though I do have the final encounter planned. Hope this helps.
  8. This is simultaneously my first Dark Heresy campaign and my first time DM'ing. I've got my group and I've got my idea as well as some of the progression laid out, but I keep worrying it's going to be too simple/too easy for my players to see where things are going before they've found all the pieces to the proverbial puzzle. Any suggestions to help keep my players guessing?
