Look, if you don't like my new beef, you can eat Dophin's & Drumsticks. I personally think my beef is better, it has more flavor. Dolphin's & Drumsticks are generic and a little boring (unless you have an amazing chef). New Beef, is a far superior meat, but you are free to eat what you like.
Just remember, New Beef will be here for you when you decide to give it a try. I hope we spend many happy and profitable years producing New Beef for you. There are certain standards by which...
Holy crap. I can't do this anymore.
Please stop.

No. Our beef will not be compromised.

Yes, but what if I do not want to BUY it at first? I guess I'm not FREE to do it, am I?
Oh no, you can 'not buy' it. We hope that you will, and it will make us sad (and broke) if you don't, but you are free to choose. Just please, don't hold us responsible later if we stop making the beef because we can't sell it and you can't get other beef. If you go beefless, it's your choice. But please don't. We value you as a customer.
Edit: lol - this is getting out of control. I hope we don't give Jay a stroke when he wakes up. Imma go play some Borderlands!

And... what about if I want to eat your beef WITHOUT your spatula tool? I guess I can't... where is FREEDOM of choiche in there?
The special spatula is only there to help you make the beef better. If you don't use it, the beef may be a little greasy (like your normal burgers), but they will taste just fine. You can convert the spatula into a car window scraper for frosty mornings or throw it away if it offends you. The point is this awesome new game... I mean beef, that is superior to other beef. The spatula is our gift to you. You don't need it.
You are free to use it, and make an extra special superior burger, or you can do without it and just have a normal superior burger.
Edit: Please try our beef. We just want to make you happy and make enough money to develop even better superior beef so that your supply of great beef is never interrupted.

strange comparision. I dont trust anyone who boasts to have invented "new beef" (which you can only eat with his new expensive spatula tool) because IMO standard beef is good as it is. Well I am not a fan of TV shopping channels either.

See, this is my point exactly. He never said you can 'only eat it with the special tools', he said that the use of the special tools made it better. That's exactly what's going on here. You don't need the stand ups, the track, even the cards. All of it could be replaced with a PDF. They are just saying they think it's a better way to do it and they hope you will try it before passing judgement. "Here are some great tools to make your game better. Try it, we did. We think it works great."
Ha! I scored one with the stupid beef story! ... but it wasn't talking about Warhammer. Just beef.

That's a good question. I said that without thinking. I'd like to know the answer to this as well. Are we considered a niche?
*Yawn*, time for me to get off work. Night folks.

I do not know... but seems probable and a handbook will of course contain careers (hopefully not classes), equipment background and other things. But while with a single Dwarven handbook I can GM 3 groups of 7 players each in 3 different days of the week, SHARING my handbook to whoever asks me it during the game, I simply can't do it with a single deck of Dwarven cards. Most probably some of the players will buy the Dwarven handbook anyway but they will not be forced to do it in order to play my dwarven campaign.
I understand, but I don't agree. Yes, a handbook might contain all the things you said, but so might the 'kit' you mentioned. And, why can you share a handbook, but not cards? In fact, it seems to me the cards would be easier to share since you can hand them the ones they need and not the whole deck. This would allow you to share with more people at once, and maybe not have to take them back (till the end of the session - if you want), so, you're not handing a single book around over and over, but handing the players the cards they need once - which they can store in the handy boxes that come with the game so they don't get lost (or wet). If you look at it that way, cards are more sharable than books.
I guess that's what all this really boils down to, how you WANT to see it.

Actually I AM reading developer diary and I AM reading as much material as I can about V3.
My concern in this post is that the material I have seen in that stand did not look like quality material at all.
Maybe I am overcriticizing, in fact WFRP is my favourite RPG and I'm suffering fear for it's possible fate and evolution. Maybe it's just that. But maybe it's jsut my 6th sense kicking in... telling me somethig basilar is wrong about this game, something I can't precisely identify and name, but something important and visceral.
I tell you: I can't wait to play a proper V3 game and spend hours discussing about it with a person that played it and knows it a lot, in the hope to find it is a good game.
But even then my 6th sense is telling me something has changed for little worse... we will not perceive WFRP in the same way: what happens if you loose 2-3 cards? What happens if your gaming group is made up by 6-7 people? Quick answer? You have to tell them to buy Player's kits. Not all that expensive, yes, but surely more expensive than a couple of D10, a pencil and a piece of paper. Then, maybe in 2 years FFG will pull out a Dwarf Player Kit and a Halfling Player Kit. I know at least one of my players will want to play a proper dwarf and surely will buy it, I as a GM wil buy it. Then one year later comes out the complete Witch Hunter players kit... you get the idea.
Oh, I know, in a normal WFRPV2 situation most probably the Dwarf Handbook would have been more expensive and the player would have bought it anyway... but the phylosophy behind it is different: with one Dwarf Handbook you can play with a WHOLE party of 7 dwarves... with a single Dwarven Players' kit you can't. You have to buy more than one. Got the point? Collectable Roleplayng Card Game... sounds more correct now?
Another advantage point that Handbooks have above card decks is that it is much more difficult to have a handbook page going lost or eaten by dog than a card has. Cards tend to slip, fall under the fridge, being soaked by accidentaly poured coke or beer, mixing them usures them also. Handbooks tend to stay integer for tenths of years (I've very old ones and they're still perusable and usable). But don't be afraid! You can also replace your MiA cards buying Replacement Player's Kit! Collectable Roleplaying Card Game... sounds more plausible now?
You know what? FFG is just applying a strong market strategy: WFRPV2 did not sold enough to keep itself alive? We will make it sell enough by forcing (yes, forcing, not pushing) players and GMs to buy lots of small kits.
This is exactly what I'm talking about. How do you know that a 'Dwarf kit' will only support one player? You can't even say for sure there will be one, or that it won't include classes, equipment, and lots of other value added material. Expansion packs are common in RPGs. I have a 'thief' book from nearly every version of D&D. Even D&D 4th is doing this. Games need to sell stuff to survive. Selling each player 1 book and you're done isn't a good business model, especially with a small niche group like Warhammer players. Want to see more material? The company has to profit and it has to be worth it for them to make more. Simple economics. You are getting panicked over speculation. I'm seeing a lot of this.
And your cards. If they are flying all over your house, slipping under stoves and getting ate by dogs, perhaps you should take a little better care of your stuff. Try the card protector sheets listed in other threads. I mean, a spilled drink will ruin books and screens just a easily as cards. That's why we have a 'no drinks on the table' rule.
If you have a lot of players, you are either going to have to buy two sets, or share. You will have to share just like you would if you had 8 players and 1 book. If you don't like to share, that's a personal preference.
In fact, I'm not seeing any points here that aren't personal preference once the misconceptions are stripped away. Maybe your '6th sense' is confused. It's beef, not chicken-be... I mean, it's a roleplaying game. Not a 'collectible card game'.
-
What? Why are you comparing this to Warhammer. I have no idea what you are talking about...
But:

Let's say I just invented a new kind of raw beef. This new raw beef has many differences. It will cook faster, there is less chance of burning it, and it fits on the bun better. I've included a new spatula that will assist you in cooking it and a new type of fuel for your stove that burns slower and hotter and helps you cook the meat better, making the final product very tasty.
It will be 2 minutes before the first person shows up and says, "Hey, this isn't beef! It's chicken. I want my beef the way it was before. This is going to taste like crap. I hate it."
So I say, "Try it first. It's pure beef, I promise. If you made good burgers before, then they will still be great! Now though, they are easier to make and more fun to eat!"
Chicken Hater: It's not beef, it's going to taste like chicken. It's chicken and you can't make me buy it. I'm going to tell everyone how crappy your new chicken-beef is and I hope your new chicken-beef company dies!
Me: Well, I guess you can make it taste like chicken if you really try. How it tastes is up to the cook. I'm just giving you better beef.
Chicken Hater: You mean chicken don't you?
Me: No, I mean it's beef. It comes from cows. It's just better.
Chicken Hater: I hate your stupid chicken. And what's with all the utensils and fuel? I have a spatula. I don't want your stupid gas.
Me: Well, the beef is best if it is cooked over a slow burning high heat and the new spatula is superior to the old style. Look, it drains the grease as you flip the burger which makes the finished meat taste better!
Chicken Hater: Real beef doesn't need a special spatula or gas. I see that your stupid chicken-beef does though. Perhaps we will get lucky and someone will choke on your chicken-beef and it will destroy your chicken-beef reputation and we can get our old beef back!
Me: Ok, calm down there Beavis. You don't have to use the spatula. You don't have to use the gas. We included it to make the end product as tasty as possible. You can still cook it the way you always did. In fact, we encourage it. It is, after all, the cook that makes the burger special.
Chicken Hater: Well, I hate your spatula and I resent you trying to make me pay more for it.
Me: It's really a minute part of the cost. Most people will want it. It's cheaper for everyone if we just include it in all of the packages.
Chicken Hater: Your new chicken sucks.
Me: Sigh...
Moments later, a potential customer comes in to check out the product.
Me: Hey! Welcome to 'New Beef'.New Customer: Can you tell me a little about your product?
Me: I'd love to. We've worked really hard to make a great new product. What we've done is...
Chicken Hater: Hey dude. It's not beef, it's chicken. Also, if you eat it you will get gas. Look, there's even a gas can in the package.
Me: Hey...
Chicken Hater: Run dude, don't buy this guys poison chicken. Run and tell everyone you know about the poisonous gassy abomination this guy has created.
New Customer: You know what, I don't know what's going on here, but I don't want to get involved. Good luck with your chicken man.
Me: Sigh...
Later, everyone dies in a horrific explosion when a fuel truck runs out of control and crashes into the new building. The explosion is blamed on the poisonous gas included in the chicken-beef.
The End.
P.S. This has nothing to do with Warhammer. I just thought it was a great story.

- "Collectable roleplay card game"? Have you actually read the diaries?
I think you nailed one of the biggest issues here. I'm seeing a lot of people that are surfing in, barely skimming the material, forming strong opinions, and posting like mad. In fact, I've seen posters rant about something, ask a question, have it answered, and continue ranting as if they didn't even read the reply.
Perhaps the site needs to be rearranged or something. I mean, I'm not having any trouble navigating it and finding the answers to my questions, but it seems others are. Some of the misconception boggle the mind.
-
-
I can answer some of these questions from reading the forums and the diaries.
Disclaimer: I know nother beyond what I've read here. Any or all of this could be wrong.1) It's not that a die is better than another (though I'm sure some are more beneficial than others), but it's that each die is used for different situations. The black dice aren't used 'more than' other dice, they are used to represent detremental conditions. Check out the dice symbol descriptions in the design diaries, here: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=794 then check out the dice roller here: http://www.gmtools.excelocms.com/
Between the two you should be able to get an idea of what's on the dice, what each is used for, and what the typical results are for the various dice pools.2) The difficulties are 0-4, representing challenge levels Simple, Easy, Average, Hard, and Daunting. Simple is 0, easy is 1, Average is 2, Hard is 3, Daunting is 4. That is not a cap to difficulty, just a sample of typical difficulties. Details can be found here: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=794
3) I don't know the answer to this one, but here is a sample character sheet for a starting character: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/wfrp/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-character-generation/WFRP_CharacterSheet_GurniThorgrimson.pdf and here are some samples from the Bestiary: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/wfrp/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-enemies-npcs-monsters/WFRP_BestiarySpread.pdf
This may not answer your question directly, but you can get a solid idea of what the typical ranges are.4) "These yellow six-sided dice represent dedicated training or exceptional aptitude with a skill or special proficiency." They are not for 'talents'. Talent cards are like talents in WFRP and DH. They give the character special abilities or augment skills, stats, or rolls. You can use the yellow dice if you are trained in a skill. There may be other circumstances that allow you to use a yellow die. Talents will likely be modifiers or triggered. In fact, it is possible that talent cards would allow you to roll additional yellow dice under certain conditions.
5) There was a discussion earlier about this. I started a thread on the subject with some false perceptions. It appears that the opponents stat block adds to the difficulty of the challengers roll. A single roll is made and the results interpreted from that. Looks like we will have to wait for another diary or the product release to get the details.
6) If this version is like other versions, and if it's as streamlined as it appears, then the Magik system will be very similar to the priests system. If there were a huge difference, I would assume that would have been mentioned and we'd be look at (or for) another design diary. Looking at the card samples, it looks like the systems are very similar. If you understand the priest magik, you probably understand the winds magik. There are likely different charts for failure and a different (but similar) process for building the energy to cast, but it should be very close.
Reference the spell cards that have appeared in the design diaries (for example: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/wfrp/warhammer-fantasy-role-play-dice-preview/Spell_Example_Omen.jpg) and cross reference with the Action Card Analysis http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/wfrp/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-action-cards/WFRP_ActionCardDiagram.pdf7) It appears that attackers get 1 action. They chose a card and go with it. It is unclear (at least to me) what else happens during a turn. There may be a maneuver, there is likely a cool down for cards with tokens on them, and there may be other phases or abilities. Reference Combat Training 102 http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=859
8) No character will be without action cards. Everyone gets basic action cards. Some of them have prerequisites, but no one will be without basic attacks. Build points are used to purchase more advanced cards during initial character creation and more can be purchased as the character levels. To answer your question, class specific cards will be more powerful than basic attacks, but will also likely be (in some circumstances) situational. I think 'Greater Risk = Greater Return' will be in full affect here.
9) According to the design diaries, stress/fatigue is handed out for a variety of reasons. The GM may decide that this action is very stressful and the player(s) must make a roll or suffer a stress. If you look at the character sheet, the top is orange and represents fatigue (physical stats), the bottom is blues and represents stress (mental stats). It is unclear (to me) what the effects of accumulated stress/fatigue is, but I would suspect it adds detremental dice to your pool when you roll. In other words, if you are fatigued, then you would add 'bad dice' to any rolls represented in the 'physical' half of the character sheet.
This appears to be seperate from 'party tension' as listed on the 'Party Sheet'. The tension meter triggers an effect whenever you hit the marked numbers (for example Tension 5 and 10 on the 'Gang of Thugs' party sheet).
I think both are tools for use by the GM to ratched up real life player tension, to demonstrate to the players how serious a situation is.10) There's not a lot on damage and healing so far, but looking at Gurnies sheet here: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=820 you can see that his weapon does damage (it has a damage and crit value). It is probable that this is augmented by strength and how well one rolls. This gives a total damage. It would then be reduced by the players defenses (read the bestiary entry linked above), and armor (once again, check out Gurnies sheet - leather armor has a defense of 0 and a soak of 2).
I would assume that these the remainder are deducted from your 'Wound Threshold' and when that bottoms out, bad things happen. There was some mention of 'running away' or retreating but I can't find it.I suspect healing will come in the form of spells, potions, and the 'First Aid' skill. I can't really see any mystery here. Cast the spell, drink the potion, or bind the wounds and they will likely remove wounds and/or critical wound conditions.
11) There are more design diaries coming. They come every week. If I had to guess, I'd bet they will keep coming even after release (if FFGs other games are any example). Yes, there are still questions, but, like a good game master, ynenn is building suspense - lol
From what I've seen ynenn reads all posts here. Poor guy (heh). You must scrape your eyes across my wall of text! Take 1 critical wound!

I have pre-ordered and pre-paid for my copy. So have the other 4 members of my game group. Between us we have ordered:
- 5 Core sets
- 3 Adventurerer's kits
- 3 Dice Expansions
We should have more than enough of everything. In addition to the game materials, I've ordered a large pack of clear-covered brad folders and a pack of plastic card sheets. We're probably going play our first game on a weekend, so I'll probably lay in a case of import beer and maybe a bottle or two of wine and some meat for the grill.
I'm kind of looking forward to this. Can you tell

With that outlay I sure hope it is everthing you and your group dream it will be.
We've read all the available material carefully, the designer's diaries, examined the pictures, read the speculations (and made our own). Though we pre-ordered very early, we would have canceled our orders if we didn't think it was going to be great. I think we have a very good handle on how the game will play and what its design philosophies are. We have discussed it and we feel like we are making an informed purchase. We had our final discussion on this subject as late as last Tuesday, as this will have a fairly big impact on our campaign. My group is highly motivated and looking forward to taking the system for a spin.
I think I understand this game pretty well (as do most people that have kept a close eye on things), there are few surprises left. It is my opinion that a lot of thought went into its design. I feel that a lot of 'dubious' customers will be relieved once they get a chance to play and see how it all falls together. I'm hoping for good things. I want to see this system succeed, grow, and spawn tons of new source material.
Strangely, part of what helped us make up our mind were the people that voiced such strong negative opinions. This forced us to look at things very closely and we went as far as to make a list of issues the nay-sayers had. Then we went down the list. The vast majority of the issues, we think, are due to misunderstandings about how things work. After we debunked most of the arguments, what was left was purely personal preference. We decided that it sounded like a solid, fun game. I told my players that I could run a campaign, of the quality they are accustomed to, with this system without difficulty and that cinched it. Those that hadn't already, wrote checks for our distributor and we locked our orders.
I'm jazzed. I can't wait to try it out

Doesnt the 3 page protector defeat the purpose by turning the cards into a page in a book. Though handy removeable pages

Though protectors of some sort will be just about essential I would think.
Well, there are a lot of people complaining that the cards are ... well, cards, and not in book form. The page protectors might make them happy

I used to do it all the time. I GM'd a buddy playing a thief. She was a jewel thief and a 2nd story (wo)man. We spent many nights casing places and planning elaborate heists. There used to be a quarterly (?) publication called 'Thieves Guild'. Many of our scenarios came from there.
-
Genre wise, the only ones I can think of that are even close are Savage World's - 'Solomon Kane' and that indie game 'Witch Hunter'. Maybe if you stretch things a bit, 7th Sea.
System wise... There aren't many D100/Skill systems out there apart from Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader. Maybe Chaosium's 'Basic Role-Playing System' (which I always thought they should have refurbed retried the market on that one - Oh wait, they did in 2008) and Strangely enough Savage Worlds (not d100, but sort of similar in it's handling of skills and such).
I've always liked Savage Worlds. The shear number of community created settings is amazing. I've played Alien vs. Predator, Weird Wars (Vietnam Horror), Battle Tech (roleplay), Modern Horror, Deadlands, Fallout, and yes, even Warhammer using that system. It even has a really spiffy Fantasy Grounds II ruleset, which is where I've played most of these games. My favorite setting for Savage Worlds is Necessary Evil. The back story on that game is slick.

You have to give him a cute name like 'Mr. Mittens'

Hahaha... Love Nurgle. Always my favorite.
-
The main thing I remember about Nurgle was that it was like a big happy family. They called it the Carnival. The Plague Bearers were also called 'Counters' and they obsessivly counted everything, including the nurglings which were regarded as children. I remember reading how they (nurglings) burst out of blisters and pustules on the Great Unclean Ones and lapped at their sores. Pretty gruesome.

Remember the Sabbat flexi vinal record in issue 95? I'm still a Sabbat fan to this day (well, what's left after the split). I have two copies of that issue, one where I took the record out and one where I left it in. I don't have a record player anymore though

Anyone know if an MP3 of that song was ever made? It was called 'Blood for the Blood God'.
