jhilahd ~ Skotos reacted to Edgookin in Sell me on FFG's game versus West End Games' Star Wars RPG.
Each of the game systems has a number of problems, and a number of things they excel at.  You just have to decide which is better.  For me, FFG is the way to go, at least at the moment.  But WEG will always have a place in my heart.

As I see WEG vs FFG (Using RAW, no houserules):

    Dice System
WEG - Easy to understand.  Fairly solid, but if dice pools got large, multiple actions could get rather ridiculous.  Wild die was always fun.
FFG - Takes getting used to.  Narrative system engages your players, and rewards awesome descriptions.

    General Mechanics
WEG - advancement tends to be slow (can be good or bad).  But a single basic stormtrooper with a blaster rifle can still hurt a PC with massive levels of experience.  Everything was defined as to how it works.
FFG - characters add abilities and skills quickly.  Opponents become outclassed quickly, as most characters (PC and NPC) go down fast.  Offense rises much faster than defense.  Give a character 500 xp, and a basic stormtrooper minion won't even slow him down.  GM has to define how to do a lot of things, and PC's can easily argue a different skill's use for the same activity.

    Force Use
WEG - Force use is either useless parlor tricks, or suddenly overpowering.  There is only a very brief range where you can reliably use powers, but not outshine all non-force users.
FFG - Very well balanced, early force use is useful, later force use is cool, but doesn't overshadow normals.

    Vehicles
WEG - Vehicle combat is quick, solid and understandable.  Until you try to cross scales (Personal to Starfighter, or Starfighter to Capital), then the entire system fails horribly.  Vehicle modifications were unwieldy.
FFG - Narrative vehicle combat and chase rules can be a pain until you and your players get used to them.  Shields don't function the way they have in any system before.  Personal vs. vehicle scales can be a problem.  I really like the hardpoints for modifications, but wish they had some modifications to base systems you could do, without having to have a signature vehicle.  Also wish you could convert cargo/passenger space to hardpoints and vice versa.  Some squirrely rules regarding removing weapons from hardpoints, even when swapping for others.

    Character Generation
WEG - Easy character generation, just stats and skills.  I liked not having classes.  Characters start very weak compared to any named character in the movies (which are all statted out).  A character that plays for years would usually not match up to any named character (Even the stats for Luke at Yavin ... where I consider him to be a fairly new character)
FFG - Character generation is easy (especially with Oggdude's program), but you have lots of choices, and need to have a character concept in mind.  Characters start inexperienced, but not feeling weak. You could see how you could compare to movie characters, and can feel like you match or exceed them fairly easily.

    Combat
WEG - didn't like the damage system.  It seemed rather limiting.  Did like that you didn't magically become more damage resistant over time or gain health.  Low level opponents challenge high level characters.
FFG - health and strain models well.  Low level opponents do not challenge high level opponents unless you use waves of them, or use them as ablative armor for bad guys.  There is definitely a possible arms race to mod out your weapons.  Don't like how fast offense rises compared to defense.  The only defense that seems to be everywhere is boosts to soak, or wound threshold.

    Special Rules
WEG - Force points were a pain in the butt.  No one wanted to spend them, unless they knew they would get them back.  Did not like the dark side rules, too much reward to get 1 or 2, but lose your character very easily.
FFG - Destiny pool is a great idea.  Minions are nice.  I like the Duty and Obligations as RP and backstory items, but hate the mechanics for them.  Morality is a good start, but there are a lot of holes in it.

In general, you find both good and bad in both systems.  I had an extensive house rules setup for WEG, which sealed a lot of the more major holes, but deviated heavily from RAW.  FFG, I have a few, but not as many.  Some were houserules simply because we misread the rules, and once we figured it out, liked how we played better.  (I can only think of 3.  I use x5 for vehicular scale, use a fixed initiative order, and kill minions 1 at a time).

In the year 2148, explorers on Mars discovered the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization. In the decades that followed, these mysterious artifacts revealed startling new technologies, enabling travel to the furthest stars. The basis for this incredible technology was a force that controlled the very fabric of space and time.
They called it the greatest discovery in human history.
The civilizations of the galaxy call it... MASS EFFECT
This is a fan project and unaffiliated with BioWare or EA International. Please don't sue me, kthx

    ~ Main Setting Version 1.0.2 Download ~

    Hey everyone!
For the past 6 months, I've been composing a Mass Effect setting for the Genesys RPG. I was inspired by a campaign in that very setting that I've been running for a good year and a half. We originally started with another community made setting document, but as our campaign progressed, there were too many things we felt didn't fit entirely or didn't work smoothly rules wise, so I set out in an attempt to give the community a finished and well rounded representation of BioWare's science fiction world for Genesys.

The main goals here was to make things slim and generalized. Rather than provide profiles for every single weapon from the ME franchise, this setting's approach uses generic templates such as "Heavy Pistol", but introduces a weapon making (similar to craftsmanship from Terrinoth) that modifies this profile further. Thus, a Carnifex can still feel different from a Predator!

Apart from an impressive armory and pages full of gear and equipment, this book also features:
14 unique PC species, including the often overlooked Hanar and Elcor, as well as the mysterious Protheans and even Artificial Intelligences 11 different careers to start your characters with A load of talents, some borrowed from existing Genesys material (Terrinoth and Beanstalk), some ported from SWRPG, and some completely custom! Biotics and Tech powers in the form of two different adaptions of Genesys' magic: Biotics function similar to normal magic, spending strain to cast "spells" Tech powers require no strain, but a PC can only "prepare" a limited number of them, based on the capacity of their omni-tool 20 different vehicles, all of them generalized; ranging from Mechs, over Rovers to Corvettes and Dreadnoughts More than 80 adversaries, from all lifestyles and regions of the galaxy And a Game Master chapter which offers insight into running military campaigns, some example plot hooks and a section dedicated to the terrifying Reaper threat.
The PDF is fully bookmarked to all its chapters and sub-sections, so downloading is a lot better than viewing it in GDrive ^^

I hope that the 150 pages I have compiled by now serve as help and inspiration for anyone here who wants to run their own adventures in the Milky Way. (And maybe even Andromeda down the line. I have some plans for that )

And for those of you not satisfied with just one galaxy, why don't you take a trip to

    ~ Andromeda Expansion Version 1.0.0 Download ~
It's only a small (30 pages) expansion on the setting, but it features Angara as a playable species, some new Talents, more guns, more gear, 4 new factions, and over 20 new adversaries!

Lastly, a massive thanks goes to everyone involved in designing, playtesting, offering advice.

First list feels more consistent for skirmish. Jyn can't face the melee characters that usually appear in skirmish matches. I would consider to drop 1 troopers+ z6 to include an ATRT, or drop 1 z6 to put Tenacity on Sabine (+medic droid on trooper?)

I really never payed attention to "what I really needed". I would keep a log of what I have and every week I would go buy $20 worth of either Citadel or Vallejo paints I didn't have and built my stash that way. Unless your painting a mini and need a certain miniature...then I went to get it right away. Since your playing Imperial then I suggest your black's dark blue's, grey's, possible olive green's and whites for now. Hope this helps.

Anyone can use that fake Mandalorian Fett...
... Wanted to utilize as much of the model itself, slimming it to form rather than actually re sculpting... but it was the paint that brought it together.

Still very much a work in progress, and mostly block colours only...

I like them. My one bit of advice is to use a brown wash over the whole miniature to add some easy depth.

Great points everyone! How silly of me to not think about canon, alien biological differences, and gender roles in a FANTASY miniatures table top game. It's almost like I forgot for a moment that none of those things matter to me, I'd just like more variety in the models considering they're based on a property with a whole galaxy of different species. I'll just take my token Duros and female trooper and go home. Obviously something like this:

The gap issue is definitely noticeable on certain models way more than others. Luke, the duro, and the Rebel grenade launcher seem to be the "offenders". Easily fixable though!

You have to understand, when you ask someone to paint miniatures for you, you are asking for skilled work. It's basically like commissioning a painting. It requires time, skill and materials. I would be taking a pay cut at $10 an hour for painting miniatures and my regular job is way easier. And then I'm supplying my own paints, brushes, etc. It's not unreasonable to charge well above, especially if you are good at it.
Art is always seriously undervalued for the amount of work that goes into it.

Pretty self-explanatory title. Look, FFG, I love your games, I love your stuff, but the really weird vagueness with release schedules and concrete information about ANYTHING is really starting to be grating. This goes double for our group being solely online, like a lot of people are these days. A whole lot. We have been waiting for Emerald Empire as much as anyone but three weeks after it's hit stores there's still no sign of a digital release and due to FFG's own lack of transparency regarding anything at all we have no idea when we'll even see it.
I get you want to avoid piracy probably and support FLGS, but I am getting really tired of feeling like a second class citizen just because I'm one of many, many tabletop players who struggle to find in-person gaming. Especially with a title as niche as L5R. Yes, I know Emerald Empire isn't necessary to play at all, not the point. Point is, why are we stuck waiting a full month for a digital release of any content without any further contact from FFG about when we can even expect to see anything? Basically it's really hard to want to give you my money when you seem to really not WANT me to give it to you in the first place. Why would I not download a book somewhere if I have to wait an entire month just for my group to get a usable official copy?

jhilahd ~ Skotos reacted to ryanznock in Last night's honorable f--- up
In our L5R RPG game, my Scorpion shugenja just married into a family of Dragons. At the wedding, one of my exes - a drunk Lion bushi - interrupted right after the ceremony completed. When chastised by my new father-in-law, the Lion challenged the man to a duel.
My father-in-law had a champion - a distant Scorpion relative of mine who saw it as an affront to both clan's honor. It was a duel to first blood, but alas the drunken Lion struck too hard and did not pull his blow. He killed the champion, and honor demands that my father-in-law has the same fate. Before the end of the evening, he was to commit seppuku.
This put a damper on the evening's festivities.
A few hours later, my new husband and I -- neither of us had said a single word to the other -- were called to meet with his father-in-law, who was meditating in a cliffside dojo overlooking a fog-filled ravine. He wanted to give us his wisdom, and shortly thereafter would take his own life. But when we arrived, we heard sounds of a struggle.
My husband burst in, finding four thugs with clubs trying to knock the old man out and abscond with him. They were aided by a shugenja, calling upon the air spirits so the kidnappers could simply fly away.
I realized that if fate had not brought us here at exactly this moment, they would have made it look as if my father-in-law had fled as a coward, which would bring dishonor to the family. My husband dove into the room, fighting the thugs, but I realized what needed to be done.
I hid myself in a cloak of night, turning invisible, then sprinted forward. While two thugs tried to waylay my husband, the others were getting out a bag to put over the old man's head. Unseen, I conjured a *bo of water*, transmuted it into a katana, and with a single strike I beheaded my father in law.
I became visible, and the man's body and head thumped to the ground beside me, and his blood pooled at my feet. The hostile shugenja cursed and ordered her men to take my husband instead. He moved beside me, then behind me, and for a moment I thought he intended for us to fight back to back.
It was only at the last second that I realized I'd miscalculated, had assumed my husband valued Bushido more than he loved his father. I managed to twist away from his sword blow so it simply knocked me to the ground, my kimono gashed, rather than slaying me. He tried to reach down to behead me, screaming, "YOU DID THIS!"
My life was saved by the enemy shugenja slamming my husband into the wall with a blast of wind, after which the thugs rendered him unconscious. The sounds of battle drew some nearby allies (the other PCs), but by the time they arrived the enemies had flown away with my husband and the two pieces of my father-in-law.
And imagine how suspicious it looks for, in the span of a few hours, a former Scorpion to wed into a family, and then rise to the head of the household, the elder dead and her husband conveniently alive but out of the way.
This will be a complicated game. It also is an important lesson in the value of communication in a marriage.

Update: It has been brought to my attention that perhaps the person whose champion died in a duel only has to commit seppuku if the duel was intended to be to the death. If so, eh, the GM could have just rejiggered the narrative so it was a duel to the death.
