The French resistance fighters could be an interesting addition (still want Brit unique though LOL).
I also like the idea of a neutral type character, I was wondering how Asterios is controlled. I would imagine the same rules would apply. Indeed it would be good to hear what new game mechanics this expansion brought to the game.
I too would like a squad box but different poses/weopons please.
I think the point about an upgrade pack would be good if FFG were to make some radical changes. It would be a shame to invalidate the previous set and would not make sense unless the new edition was a blinder.
It would have been great to have had the other floors of the Castle and the ability to move between them. It would have certainly added more depth. I also have mixed views on the fixed locations of the action circles but once again this comes back to the map topic again.
Mutliplayer/factions is definitely something FFG need to look at and the preprint equipment packs would be good for quick play.
Lastly I somehow feel that the unique characters are not quite unique enough. Maybe this is something do with how the stats and abilities are represented and the equipment mix. I always feel each character should have some standard abilities always represented on their card and then the equipment should should be chosen seperately. The stats also don't have enough variation to make the uniques stand out enough and it is the equipment availabilty that makes up for this. I am not quite sure how to put my finger on this issue and it is probably just in my head but there you go.

The Wolf comes at a premium for his skills LOL.

Well moving on from the map I wanted to air a few more opinions covering the minis, cards & supporting tokens.
Looking at the minis I think they are great and definitely sit with the best out there. They are one of the big positives of the game. The biggest problem has been getting new characters and having a super slow release schedule for the ones we have got has without doubt turned some players off the game. One thing I would not want is FFG to reduce the quality. I would rather FFG make cost savings in other areas to keep the minis quality constant although I do think Gorgei and Ramirez were slightly off the quality of the others we have including Novogrod. Hopefully this trend will not be followed with future releases. I was also hoping the troop pack would have had different poses and weapons configurations just for variety. Its a shame they just chose a new colour scheme. I would love to see variants of troopers with the original colour scheme going forward and look forward to the other expansions already announced including Asterios.
There are a few things I would change with the cards and tokens. I loved the standard smaller card format illustrated by Plageman (this change was already in my thought process) in this thread and would love to see these replace the ones we have already. It would reduce weight and make the game more compact and probably reduce cost. I also like the denotation of the type of character as this could also sit with equipment variation that were available. Maybe they could replace the existing tokens and character cards with the more compact character card that incoporated a few unique skills associated with that character on the card and maybe then offer a selection of equipment upgrades the character could then choose from. The uniques could maybe choose 1 piece of equip from a unque deck and 1 from a general deck and the soldiers could just choose 1 from a general deck. This would save having loads of equipment cards with each character. This is by no means a definitive requirement but just maybe an idea to play with and I am sure could be refined/improved. The cards carrying the skill definition would also negate the need for a reference sheet. Going forward future expansion will greatly increase the bulk of the game and token management will become a real pain if we get a few more expansions like Novogrod. Smaller character cards and equipment cards carrying definitions would be an improvement in my view.
Lastly I wanted to get on to faction representation and availability. Wolf was a great piece and his lack of availability was a negative. FFG should look to get him back on the shelf ASAP and also expand the Mercenary range. I would also love to see other nations represented in characters e.g. a free French resistance type character or an English Para or Candian soldier (these could even be mecenaries). This would make the game more inclusive and give a wider appeal. I would also dearly love to know more about the Golden Globe Social Club as I had this big Extraordinary League of Gentleman vision in my head where these characters may have some supernatural ability or skill. They were probably never earmarked to be this but I loved the idea of a Jekyl & Hyde type character who could transform (maybe had 2 mini representations for before and after transform) . I would also like to see the existing factions expanded in due course and maybe a Mafia faction added?
What do others think on these topics?

Well as Plageman mentioned I doubt that FFG will move away from the PS but who knows how things will pan out. I will admit the PS system makes LOS simple but I am not sure if this positive is better than the positives of having a square grid system.
For info I don't want Tannhauser to be just another straight shooter game as I have those games already. What i am looking for is that element to be as good as possible and have the best possible envionment surrounding it.
I will admit TOY was not responsible for these boards but they could have spared a little time once in a blue moon to pop on here an say hello and give some teasers. FFG on the other hand is completely useless with this type if interaction and the expectation was zero anyway. Shame on FFG!

It's been said critiques are simply prejudices made public. There is another saying which is if you keep doing the same thing don't expect a different result. Tannhauser has got a take up issue outside of France. Believe me when I say it is not just product release that has caused this. A lot of people just didn't like the game for one reason or another. While great things were reported about/on the TOY website the rest of us were left to languish in nothingness. If it wasn't for a few of you French players who frequent this site, we would have been completely in the dark. This was not a good situation and in a way, nobody from TOY or FFG posting on here made for bad product communication or for that matter not taking an interest in the non French player base was a bad move by TOY.
I will agree to disagree about Tannhauser not being a miniatures game. The fact physical terrain is not represented in a 3d way and via a drawn map instead is moot. The fact is the game focuses on minis that can also have their equipment customised for gameplay and enter squad combat doesn't seem like chess to me. Players say they want more minis release not tokens. I can't see players saying wow I can't wait for the next token expansion to be released. I would almost draw a direct comparison to SW minis apart from the mission objectives. Now from comments I can see the French players of the game had a much bigger back drop and other positives on the TOY site. Unfortunately the rest of didn't.
I am not saying squash 20 soldiers into a room. I am saying you would get more movement options/freedom with a square grid map.
I am also not against good quality maps. I just don't think you will get them at the rate people would like in the current format.
Not packaging Asterios with Daedalus was a mistake in my view.
Posting on a game forum and trying to raise both sides of the coin is quite hard. This was my reason for requesting people who didn't like the game to post. That way a balanced opinion can be gained, Once again I am not against the game and some of you will know I have posted on the FFG forums on and off for quite a while and have never been destructive towards the game. This thread is also not meant to be destructive, just an opportunity to raise opinions. Nobody is right or wrong in their views it's simply their own view and a place to air that view. There is also no pleasure on my part that the game has come out of a French game company's hands which I am sure a lot of French players held dear. Unfotunately the game is out in the big wide world now in the hands of a company like FFG and I am sure they will be looking at overall appeal as opposed to a niche market. Any business who has a product will be looking shift as much of that product as possible to make more profit. I am not demanding change but simply sounding players out on if they would like change and if so, what?

I hear you all and don't get me wrong I am not a Tannhauser hater. I am going to stick to the PS and circles topic for now but I wil get on to other topics later.
I will stick to my view of diching the PS and circles (PS/C) at this point. I haven't heard a strong enough reason to keep them as of yet apart from they are part of the system and what make Tannhauser unique or go and play another game LOL. Are these really reasons for keeping the system? I am not sure. On one hand some players would like to be able to get more factions or maybe even characters on a map. The PS/C seriously restricts this option. On one hand some players want the cost to come down but then on flip side want the same hard board style maps to play on. Some want more entrances (which I agree with) but without the map space to work with this also becomes harder to implement. I love the idea of joining maps or having modular ones but yet again the PS/C system makes this much trickier and probably more costly to produce and once again restricts total maneuver area on map. There are only 3 things I can think of that warrant the PS/C system. LOS, Hermetica & smoke. All of these can have converted rules for a square grid maps system easily. If the LOS rules are clear and simple and the maps clean there should be no issue with LOS on internal structures especially. Novogrod moves outside more but once again good LOS rules and well designed square grid maps can make things easy to work out.
I would disagree that Tannhauser is not a miniatures game. How many would have bought it without the miniatures and why do expansions mainly focus around minatures? I would say Tannhauser sits between a board game, minatures game, dungeon crawl and very slightly touches the RPG element, none of which it really excels at and this could be the big Tannhaser hang up. Why have so many turned/dropped away from the game. Maybe the new rules release will clean some of it up? We will see.

Sorry I forget to mention in the previous post (page 1) regarding map changes that standard squares should replace the circles/ PS system as the standard map format.

Well in the first of my views I would like to cover off the map & the pathfinding system.
Personally I think they should do away with the pathfinding system. I know some will not like this idea and I am not out for a war on the topic but I think it is actually now one of the things that holds the game back. My reasoning is below.
The system takes away 50% of possible board movement. This means less room for manuever, massive wastage of space & very limited use of the possible board. In some ways the you could view the PS system making the map a waste of money. I also do not like the way furniture has no movement possibility. In most games it would act a cover terrain which is something else I will come on to in another post. The PS system also becomes very familiar after a while and loses it's initial impact to become quite boring. I also believe to some extent the system dumbs down some of the combat mechanics making for a less interesting/fun game.
Some will also say how the PS system makes line of sight so easy. I would say this is a moot point. I play a number of other games and yes occasionally you have to get the sewing thread out to work out a tricky LOS but this takes a few seonds. The point of keeping the PS system for the sake of LOS is a weak one in my opinion. Especially when you think of the playing area that could be gained and all the extra fun you could have arguing about LOS..
The maps are currently made on a very thick card stock. This makes them quite heavy and they could quite easily make them a lesser thickness e.g. Like Okko ones. This would make them much lighter making it easier to transport the game and cost less to produce both of which are issues.
I also like the idea of modular maps but I am not sure how well they would translate in Tannhauser. It would take very careful map planning to execute but yes I would most definitely be in favour. I would love to see the castle expanded e.g. the grounds outside. That Dirty Dozen scenario is waiting LOL. Once again TOY may have missed a trick.
The lack of maps is seriously holding the game back. 4 maps released since the game came out was a terrible move by TOY and one that FFG need to address rapidly after they get the latest one out to the rest of us outside France. The issues mentioned above may be part of the reason for TOY not getting maps to market quick enough. The cost of design, materials and weight I am sure would be factors.
Lastly I believe the whole game could do with a shake up from top to bottom. I will make some more of my opinions known in further posts. Yes maybe I will be playing devils advocate in some area's but they are relevant and I don't think FFG or players will be doing themselves or the game any favours by ignoring them. If the current format of the game was a total winner then I am sure both this and the FFG forums would be hives of activity. As we all know this is not the case meaning Tannhauser has a serious retention problem. Why is this? I don't believe it is down to just the lack of new characters, maps or expansions.

Just got to say loving those cards Plageman. Why didn't TOY produce them like you have in the first place?

It's interesting to read what people would like changed to improve the game. I have to admit I thought maybe some more broader and wide sweeping changes would be desired but this is not the case so far. I will admit I have my own opinions which I will post in a few days. I didn't want to ask a question and then answer it straight away with what I think. I have popped a link below to the duplicate thread on the BBG site just in case some of you never go over there. It may interesting for you to read the comments on that site though.

This is purely a hypothetical question but a pertinent one at this point in time. A lot of people didn't like how the game played although most loved the look and feel of it. With FFG aquiring the license now would seem a good time to raise any issues that people would like to see amended or changed completely. Certain members may also have views on what they would like to see added to the game and these would be also good to hear. It would be even better if players who hated the game posted their dislikes about the game and what stopped them buying in or indeed what stopped them playing on a regular basis for those who did buy in. This would at least give FFG pointers on how they could remedy some of the issues. Personally I like Tannhauser although I do have a few niggles with it. Ultimately if FFG can make changes that are acceptable? It will mean the game will sell more and we can all enjoy it more with faster releases and better support.
It would be good to hear peoples views/opinions.

The link above doesn't work so just for the benfit of all hopefully this one will make it easier for anyone wanting to watch the video announcement.

Interesting news for Tannhauser. I wonder what the French players think about this and indeed what will happen to the French site? I do hope the minis quality won't go down in the mass production world. One thing that interests me most is the second edition rule set mentioned. Some of the combat mechanics of the game do bug me and maybe they will be addressed in this new rule set. I would also bin the path finder maps if I was FFG. They rob a lot of space on the board and I am sure normal squares would make for more room for maneuver and make for a better game. If there was ever a time for a major change to the rules and game board it would be now. I would also like to see some sort of supporting card decks to add variation and more strategy into the game maybe a bit like TOI (this is what field op's should have been in my opinion). They could even alter the character cards to handle damage better than they do at the moment and portray the character stats more intelligently. At the moment they are all too similar. Weapon ranges could also do with tweaking. Not being able to fire a heavy machine gun unless someone is the other side of the room has always seemed strange as does some of the equipment rules e.g. knife. Lets also hope we see a bit more support & new releases scheduled in the near future. The game has always suffered from lack of product. Well I will raise my hopes that the game is going through a positive twist. FFG do need to address some issues and now is definitely the time that most will probably be more accepting of these changes. Hell I would even buy the game again if it was a much improved version, what it should have been.

I really like Okko. It plays in a cinematic way with characters retreating and loosing their nerve.
The standups are ok to play but the black silhouette used for the back of the figure detracts from play even when you paint their names on. A few of the figures look very similar when viewed from the rear and you often have to check the front to see who is who.
I did get the figure for Oni Bushi which is a very close representation to the standup however it seems somewhat expensive compared to other games. A plastic set (painted or not) would be fantastic. Hopefully their is an expansion sometime in the future.
Thanks for your take on the game. It has made me more interested in Okko.
A lot of the points you are raising are being addressed in the link below. Why not head over to BGG and make your thoughts known to the designer and producer of the metal minis.

I'm gonna give Okko a chance with the stand-ups, but I'd prefer minis... Their minis are beautiful but too pricey.
I am also thinking about it but the no plastic minis issue is causing a lump. One thing I do like is how the designer Laurent came on the forum and took time to respond. He seems like a genuine guy & he has a passion for producing the game with what seems like little resource, respect to him. He has also had 100% more input than the designers of Tannhauser have had on this forum. I wish one of them would interact more on this site. It's a shame I am not super rich. I would chuck him the money to make the plastic moulds

I had thought about replacing the minis in Okko with Heroscape and Heroclix, but there are 20 characters in the base game and 9 more in the expansion. I am still gonna look around a bit and post on my blog about this.
Well I just lobbied for some plastic minis on BGG similar to Tannhauser ones. If the publisher has no intention to do this I cannot see myself getting in to the game which is a shame for all parties. I am sure there would be a bigger take up on this game if plastic minis were offered, even unpainted ones. Why don't they commission the same people TOY have to produce them. I would jump in even if unpainted. I play Zombies Last Night on Earth and I have no problem with the minis being unpainted in that game but I would prefer prepainted ones like Tannhauser.

Well Daedalus is on route some time this decade and new minis are also touted (Minotaur, Hoax, Hass, and Oksana). I was just wondering if there was news on either The Golden Globe Social Club or Cerberus. There may even be talk of other expansions on the French site. Come on your Frenchies let us know what you have

Anyone got the latest printing that can compare to the older printing to see if the minis are better cast?

Nice work Doc! I hope the Ramirez paint job was only bad on your one
I will be interested to hear your Okko review. I hadn't heard about this game until you referenced it. It's a crying shame it doesn't have plastic minis (only pewter ones sold seperately on their website) similar to Tannhauser or other minis games. Maybe they will do them in the future. -
When I first looked at mine I thought the same but then on a second/third take, I realised they are in action poses. I had a look at the pictures on Board Game Geek and they looked exactly the same. I think they have tried to caprture them in various phases of movement/attack.

Hi Steve-O.
I only just got the Novogrod expansion so I haven't had a chance to play test it, so I too would be interested to hear peoples thoughts. I have to admit with the arrival of Novogrod the game does seem a little reinvigorated. I am not sure why they didn't space out Ramirez & Georgi from Novogrod. That way it would have kept up the momentum with product and kept the time between the next expansion a little less boring. It would also be good to hear how the two new minis play out as I haven't got them yet. Hopefully Tannhauser will go through a mini renaissance with the release of new product and rules.

* More maps. Maybe a modularised(!) set of smaller rooms or outdoor areas with separate connecting paths/panels to allow different setups.
I was thinking something like this but then thought the pathfinding system could make this quite tricky.

What Would you Like Changed In the Game?

Well I thought it would be interesting to E-mail FFG regarding the aquistion of the Tannhauser IP and also brought their attention to this thread. I was pleasantly surprised to get a response within 24hrs and it would appear from the response below that FFG follow their forum topics a little more closely than we may have thought previously. Lets hope FFG become more active with the Tannhauser line than they have been to date and address some of the concerns/issues raised in this thread in the not too distant future. Many thanks to J.R. Godwin for the fast response
Hello,
We are currently working on several articles that will address these issues. We do read the threads in our forums, and are happy to address the items brought up within them.
