Plus, Red is kinda the Rebellion color.  Even their guns shoot red.

Is there a chance of any of you kind beta-having souls giving us unwashed masses some picture peeks at the other non-duplicate AoR specialization talent trees and Foresee force power?  I suppose I can just wait until the book is in my hands in a few weeks ... but patience is so very painful.

First night.  First group.  Three players.

Twi'lek Fringer Wookiee Marauder Trandoshan Survivalist
Now, you might be saying to yourself, "Hey, Trandoshans hate Wookiees!  And Wookiees hate Trandoshans!"  And that's true, on a broad, species level.  But these two, well... they seemed to revel in each others' abilities to cause mayhem.  The Twi'lek Fringer's player couldn't make it tonight, so it was essentially a combat-heavy pair of death machines, and death machines they were.  Every opportunity for story-based role-play turned into a chance to slaughter a non-player character, and why not?  Heck, they didn't even spare the ailing, elderly matron of a large Ithorian herdship who sought nothing more but to return her son to the safety of his people, and to hand over to him the responsibilities of the family.  The Trandoshian slit all four of her throats and let her bleed out.

They murdered the captain and crew of the ship they had been traveling in after making a deal with a pirate.  Sadly for them, the pirate was about as honorable as they were, and set the freighter adrift after looting it.  As the ship plummeted toward Adarlon, they had little hope of survival... until the majordomo of Chorta the Hutt contacted them and offered his services.  A tractor beam.  Safe landing.

    Obligation to a Hutt.  Woohoo.

Needless to say, it was the bloodiest game night I've been part of in a half dozen years or more, and it turned out to be a whole lot more fun - and more challenging - than I ever expected.  Still, the system worked smoothly, and the players, who were just as new to EotE as I, picked up the dice rolls just fine.

We've got another session scheduled for next Saturday.

In the meantime, group two meets tomorrow.  I fully expect them, based on what I know of the players, to be a whole lot more sympathetic.  We'll see how it goes!

Callidon reacted to stanshinn in Stan's SW:EofE Combat Tracker
I whipped up a *free Combat Tracker*.

To create your own Combat Tracker, download my PDF below and print it (ideally double sided) and laminate it (Home Depot lets you upload a PDF and print it double sided and laminated; I forget the cost but I think it runs something like $3-$4).

To write on it, use a wet erase marker. I find the Vis-a-vis markers work better for this than Staedtler markers since Vis-a-vis is a bit more fine-tipped. Here's how it works in play:
*Step one:* Everyone rolls initiative. Track the results in the top two tables. Notes below the table explain when to roll Cool vs. Vigilance, and how to break ties. *Step two:* List the order of player and GM slots in the middle table. *Step three:* Write down the players and NPCs in the bottom table. I like to delegate the above three 'initiative setup' steps to a player while I think about combat tactics and look over the NPC stats. Then I take the combat tracker back from the player and use it to run the combat.
With each turn, I check off a) the middle table to show a GM or player slot has been used, and b) mark which character has just gone. So for one round, you'll use the column in the middle table and bottom table (they line up nicely).

If a character takes wounds or strain, there is a section next to the player name to track this.
The picture I attached shows an example combat at the top of the third round.

One other thing I sometimes do with these sorts of initiative charts -- if I'm usually theater of the mind combat, I'll put initials of the PC next to the NPC if they are engaged in melee. This way I can track who is engaged with who, which is the main thing I usually care about in a combat situation. For this reason, I have a house rule that every PC has a different first letter in their name.

Enjoy! Let me know your feedback and if there are any improvements you would suggest. I hope to create other resources for SW:EotE in the future so I appreciate any ideas you have!

The easier way to think about it is from the narrative. A group of 6 stormtroopers come into the room or down the corridor. They open fire on the party, whereever they happen to be, but only manage to sneak a hit on one of the players (GM rolled dice for the minions against that player). So, while the roll is against A PC, the narrative shows the troopers cutting loose on everyone and just getting hits against one person (or more if from autofire weapons).

I've been thinking a bit about Duty... hehe.. duty.  Ahem.  Sorry.

I'm thinking that it will be set up that you buy a Duty reward threshold.  What I mean is, while obligation gives you rewards right away such as experience or redits, duty will be a long term investment, in that when your Duty reaches a set threshold, say 10 for a character, they get a bonus for accomplishing goals towards this Duty.   Say, you have a Duty to Avenge Alderaan - if you do a mission, where, upon successfully recruiting a group of Alderaanians, you get 1 duty point.    To get more experience/greater awards down they way you purchase a higher Duty Tier, such as 20 or whatever depending on the number of players.

This would keep people motivated, such as what Obligation does, and force the players to be a bit more proactive (some players have a we'll wait and see attitude when it comes to adventuring).  Also, creates a pseudo-conflict if different PC's have different Duty types, but depending on how a mission is completed  you only get to chose 1 type.

Just ideas.  It could be something completely different.

My awesome wifey made me Star Wars cupcakes for my birthday.  In addition to sharing the love, I also realized that this sight is what happens when a group of characters gets way way in over their heads with a wrathful GM who decides to drop the hammer and throw a few nemeses and a horde of stormtroopers at the party.  Everyone rolls for initiative, certain that this is going to be a depressingly short combat encounter ...

...and then someone rolls a Triumph.

Also remember that Scathing Tirade is only going to be working on the scale of what, a couple strain on a few enemies (on a great day)?  The improved version adds a single setback die for a couple rounds.  It's not some amazing lol-spammable "game-winning" exploit waiting to happen here guys and gals.  Certainly less of a potential in-game mechanical annoyance than Force Users yanking weapons out of anyone's hands for a single force point.

Scream all you want at the mynocks.  If you manage to scare them all away?  Heck yeah!  Those things are an annoying chore on the best day.  Thanks for letting us get back to the scenario at hand.

Scold that Rancor to the best of your ability.  It's probably going to eat you next round anyway.

In the OT every light and dark side force user makes mention of Destiny in relation to the force at some point.

Obi-Wan: Your Destiny lies down a different path | You cannot escape your Destiny Palpatine: It is unavoidable, it is your Destiny Darth Vader:  You can destroy him.  It is your Destiny | If that is your Destiny; Yoda:  If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your Destiny
