One can be a good cook by simply using receipes from books and a modicum of basic cooking knowledge (like taking the cake out of the oven when it looks done to you, even if it means 10 min more than the receipe) though. It won't win you any Michelin stars, but you can still amaze your friends with food that tastes awesome.
So us X-wing. Netlusting plus some skill won't win you Worlds but they might win you a Store championship or three.

My apologies in advance, but this is Bantha Poo-Doo.
I don't build lists....ever. The reason is that I barely have time to play, let alone spend hours thinking about the game, the meta, the statistically best combos, etc. Frankly, I don't care that much. I just want to go to the LGS or a tourney (on a rare occasion) and put down some ships, fly, and roll some dice....and on more than one of those rare occasions I have won those tournaments.)

For me, the fun is in the flying. I don't mind outsourcing the 'nerd work' to those who want to spend hours on end obsessing with the combos.

    Just my 2 cents.

@Phaedros : Learn to play rules, Page 7, Step 2, 2nd skull point, 'the player with the most command icons on ready units at the planet wins that command struggle.' in the rules, the word ready is bolded for emphasis.

    Dear OP,

Shield cards, retreating, deploying your Warlord intelligently and event cards (i.e. Indomitable) are part of the game and they can all solve "your problem".
That is to say, your real problem appears to be a lack of skill and knowledge of the game.

I suggest that you play some more and instead of using your Warlord as a battle-tank, you use it as a support unit. (which it is)

I don't know if I'd say best ship
Imo there is no best ship but some that work better than others.
    I do love the Phantom
I've have wayyyy more wins with it over loses. My losses are usually due to making really bad mistakes like landing on asteroid because misjudged template size.
The phantom I've found is very deadly against ships like the Falcon, Y wings, b wings, xwings, shuttles, slave. Lol just about everything
    Even pilots like wedge, Howlrunner.
....Ya maybe I take back my opening statement

I think the biggest thing for me is that I am just not that competitive.  If it were a sport, maybe, but I equate this with just throwing dice and blowing up hapless Imperials.  I did play in a handful of local events, and did have fun, but I think wanting the prizes got the better of me.

I just can't get cutthroat.  I've met gamers who think that is a flaw.

    Very sad...

For anyone who was there, this is 'The Rebel Spy'.
Tim did a great job with over 40 entrants, but you will always have some weirdness. My bizarre moment was facing off in the 2nd round against a kid who - bless his heart - had no damage deck, no movement templates, no identifying base marker and only three dice. I had to come out of tournament mode and keep reminding myself to help him, which i did tactically (at the cost of an x-wing) and by loaning my 2nd set for the duration of the match.
In the end, I had to pour it on and beat him, but I honestly felt bad because he took it pretty hard.
Other than that. It was a fantastic experience. Alan from Jacksonville! Email me brother! Also played Percy and Jose, two other gents of the highest character. All told, a great time with great people. Thanks again Tim, CoC, and FFG.

ok, So I am just picking a fight. If we have all these exceptions to this non rule why don't we just follow the rule and be done with it? It's really not that hard to move and then action. I'll never sit on the side that promotes sloppy play and IMO casual does not equal sloppy.

The issue here is that he was playing; the y-wing player could have, at any time, corralled the A-wings and gunned them down. He chose to keep his fighters in a herd instead.

My dogs are slower than the rabbits and squirrels in my backyard, they don't just case them by running right next to each other, they split up and try to force their prey into range of the other. If the Y-wing player had use a similar strategy he would have won, or at least put in a good showing.

If a strategy is easily countered then the other player choosing to not counter it doesn't make it unsportsmanlike. A ure maneuvering game can be fun as both player try to outfox each other. I don't fully approve of not taking pot shots while running, but running in and of itself is not only valid, but for a hit and run strike craft it is somewhat vital.

    Simple:
The OP found himself in a position whereby his best bet was to engage the enemy piecemeal. His opponent knew this and refused to be engaged piecemeal. The opponent had a choice of "engage piecemeal and maybe lose, or don't engage at all and certainly lose", and chose to do the latter.

At last check there wasn't anything in the theoretical Sportman's Handbook that says "if you're winning the game you must deliberately make stupid moves just to let your opponent win". Hell, if I was in the opponent's position and the OP deliberately started making stupid moves like you suggest, I would actually be a little offended. "Do you have so little respect for me that you're now playing to lose?"
