DarwinsDog got a reaction from shosuko in Hope for Mantis/Spider/Etc. Players
I hate to be that guy, but I really hope the spider clan never comes back. I was not a fan of their story and all of the massive retcon that went on to make it happen. "No the emperror totally had another son this whole time. Also there were tons of people in the shadowlands who were not really bad, but they were still tainted and following the lord of Jigoku. They've also been there the whole time, you just never noticed."
Mantis seems likely since Yoritomo has already been mentioned. It would be cool to see a way to include shadowlands, maybe as a faction that you can only purchase with influence.

DarwinsDog got a reaction from shosuko in Key Questions about Rings and their Elements
My inclination on the first two is that they don't work. You claim the earth ring (for example) and it also has the void element. It is still the earth ring. I can see the case for the other interpretation, so hopefully we can get an official answer.
For the last one, the RR says this on page 14 under ring effects:
So that sounds to me as if you can have a double void ring, but you still only resolve it once. The ring effect is not the same as the element. The element on the ring determines which ring effect you are allowed to resolve.

DarwinsDog got a reaction from Soul Twister in Clarification on action windows
The various rules documents don't do a great job explaining the action windows, so I was hoping for input from others. Writing things out helps me clarify them, but I want to make sure I have it right. As I understand it, it goes:
Dynasty phase: Only for playing characters in provinces and Action abilities printed on cards. Draw phase: A regular action window Conflict phase: Before every opportunity to declare a conflict there is an action window that each begins with the active player. According to page 19 of the RR the cycle starts here so there are 5 action windows each turn. One action window per conflict resolution, for a total of 9 potential action windows in the conflict phase. Fate phase: Another one here Regroup phase: Last one for each turn. Most action windows begin with the first player for the turn, and players are allowed to use Action abilities on cards, play characters from their conflict hand, and playing attachments from their conflict hand. The window in the Dynasty phase is restricted to only Action abilities on cards and playing dynasty characters from provinces (this is the only time that characters may be played from provinces). The only other change to standard action windows is during conflict resolution when the first action goes to the defender.

DarwinsDog got a reaction from The Cocky Rooster in SoC suffering random conditions [minor spoilers]
That's what one of my players was arguing. Basically it comes down to that it means to "suffer" a condition. To me, Ispher can't suffer poison, and therefore will not be suffering three conditions as stated in the app.
It works for the first hero, assuming no one else has any conditions. After that you have different numbers of cards for each condition.

DarwinsDog got a reaction from LordBlunt in Phoenix Clan Strategy (Now Roles released)
The role doesn't actually change much. If you built a deck within the rules as presented, it will be completely tournament legal no matter what role your clan has. The only changes to deck construction are the ability to use the appropriate initiate and either add more off-clan cards (keeper) or double up on province elements (seeker). There's also the slightly different interaction with elements and conflicts, but that doesn't impose deck construction rules.

That could be. I only tried once and the monsters were the same, but that could have been luck of the draw. I think one of the groups in that scenario was fixed, so there's that too.

DarwinsDog got a reaction from Charmy in AoE RtL definition valid in classic play?
I've found that it's not as necessary with an OL campaign. Most multiple target abilities require adjacency in some form. Overlords will know those abilities are out there and can move monsters accordingly. The app tends to bunch everything up into one area making such abilities really powerful by comparison.

I've tested this out before, and the app will save at the start of a level, just before setup. If you set things up and then exit, it will come back to the beginning and run through setup again.
I believe it will do that even if you have taken some turns already. It's easy to test out with an empty save game, just to be sure.

DarwinsDog got a reaction from Devin-the-Poet in Historical References/inspirations?
Extra History is a great YouTube channel that did a series about Sengoku Jidai. This was the main historical basis of L5R, with lots of Chinese and Korean elements brought in. Romance of the three Kingdoms (China) plays in heavily. Miyamoto Musashi wrote the Book of Five Rings (which is where the five rings come from), and the Akodo tacticians were based heavily on Sun Tsu.

DarwinsDog reacted to twinstarbmc in That's right. No Mantis. No Spider.
I almost posted this to an existing thread, but I didn't want to derail its discussion further. I am prepared for the hatestorm, but I had to get this out of my system.
I'm a pretty patient person. But does every single Kami-forsaken thread have to turn into a continued bemoaning of the lack of Mantis and/or Spider? I'm terribly sorry your factions were not included. Truly. I can't imagine how it feels to feel so slighted. But for the love of the Fortunes, I don't know how much more I can take.
Mantis wasn't a faction when AEG started this game way back in the day. Spider wasn't even a glimmer in the story team's collective eyes. Maybe it'll happen in the future. Maybe it won't! Maybe we'll get some bizarre Lobster clan full of tainted pirates sworn to Gaidotsu. And maybe not. Plenty of factions have come and gone over the years under AEG, and we have no reason to believe that FFG won't do the same!
I played Mantis. I played Spider, I played Lion, Unicorn, Dragon, Ratling, and Crane. Enough. Take a nice deep breath, and -- as mono no aware will teach us, if Disney has not yet done so -- let it go.
Or, alternatively, educate me. Tell me why nearly every single thread in this board has been infiltrated by, what essentially boils down to, "Oh yeah, well at least you have a clan!"

I go into more detail in my blog post about assmbling the Daqan minis.
but there's some of what I wrote about the quality of the figures.
Basically, FFG cleverly sculpted the figs to get the best out of PVC, but they are still PVC minis and not as high quailty as contemporary Hard Plastic or metal figures.   This doesn't bother me in the least as I like the look of the figs and I'm not particularly fond of over-filigreed miniatures. Also, I'm painting them to a tabletop standard via dipping and they are very well suited to that style of painting.
