  1. Hi Magnus Grendel,

an ambitioned project. I am not to familiar with the campaign rules you mention, but your appraoch sounds solid. In regard to the "Lord Purgator", I would like to suggest that your player character does not "end up as something similar". Instead, make it a campaign sub-plot for him to TAKE that position. Then you have the (seemingly) chaos-typical infighting inside the own ranks of the crusade... it is just not "player vs player" but "us PC vs. them NPC". ;) Make sure that, sooner or later, every other PC has some minor beef with the current "Lord Purgator". They will all have some incentive to see him replaced then.

For designing systems/plantes/moons for your campaign map, I would like to suggest a FreeBee of a different system: Stars without Number.

Chapter 7 / "World Generation" has a few very nice tables with a lot of ideas and concepts that are easy to transfer to 40K. At other points, modifying the tables to suit your needs should be easy.

If you would like some specific input a particular part of scenery/npc/world/colony (or help in fleshing them out), feel free to drop a line (here or over PM). I will be not be respoding till Wednesday (a friend stay over for a couple of days, so I won´´t spend much time in front of a PC), but afterwards I will try my best to make it into that list of 40K sages (youhavehurtmyegoDAMMIT!)

    ;)

  2. Challenges: Get onto the planet undetected
Unless the planet has -no- orbital sensors/satellites/patrol ships/listening posts up in the orbit and/or the wider system, your players may need to get stealthy. This means that they either need to smuggle themselves in or that the ship that brings them in enter real-space far away from such sensors, which in turn means they will have fly a guncutter for a -long- period of time. I had some inquisitorial agents spend DAYS inside an Aquilla for such an operation, they hated it. Aside from that, it means "sensor works" and this means tech-stuff.

Once that is done, they will have to enter civilized area WITHOUT being spotted. Do you want to make this tuff for them? Do not give them local support. Spacemarines stick out like a sour thumb. Chaos Marines even more so.

    Challenges: supplies, supplies
How much supplies do they have been able to bring along, and how (see above)? When will they run out of it? They will need a base of operation and will need supplies. Not only ammo, but food and drink as well. Chat with them before so that you know their general plans, this will help you to generate targets for such. Next, thing about disturbances and bring some up now and then. How do they deal with people that stroll into their lair? What if they will be missed...?

    Challenges: demon deals
A daemon of tzeentch may offer support. For defined support , the creature will demand things like "raise a building I am going to show you" or "slaughter the first imperial priest you meet from now on, and leave him on display with his eyes in his mouth, right where you killed him". One succh thing will include "do me a favor when I ask for it". Make them really on it, then have it turn things into pure trouble for them. The daemon tests them, or it maybe follows its very own agenda.

Target: the files of the enforcer and the church
They will need support and followers. Those who are suspected to be evildoers may help. But how to get those WITHOUT tipping everybody off?

    Target: the astrophatic choir
If they cannot call for help from off-world, it evens the odds...

    Target: the governour´s wife
The planet will have somebody who is in charge when the RT is away. This person has a well-loved wife who is charitable, diplomatic and loved by the populace. Give them a prophecy about having foothold when the gov kills his wife and the populace learns it. Especially when he REALLY did it!

Hi there! First off my name is Brian and I've been a Gamemaster for a few years now

    Hello Brian :)

To challenge the players, one needs obstacles. To put proper obstacles, one needs to know the goals. Exactly -how- may they take over the planet? What are the key pillars that uphold the status quo? These are things that need to be overcome, which in turn is a thing that the players have suggestions for (once the targets are clarified). When they have their way, you may start to build obstacles. Do you already have some ideas about the pillars of order? Or are those needed as well? ;)

I hope this helps to bring your gears into motion

Hey tagging on the Mara Table, could you post a link to your extra Dead Stars encounters?

I used to have a copy but it's gone somewhere...

    Hi ThenDoctor,

thanks for your request, I updated them as well today, and here they are.

If you are looking for a printer friendly version, please let me know. I will change the background in the document then.

  5. A long, long time ago I created a table with Psychic Phenomena and Warp Perils, tailored for “Dead Stars”, the third part of the Haarlock´s Legacy Trilogy. Now, in 2017, a fellow FFG form-user asked me for such alternate tables, and so I dusted of my old table, correct some of bad grammar and got myself some artwork (see above) to give it all a neat look. And here you have it, all minted for DH1st, I hope you have fun with it.

Download it here, or here for the printer-friendly version.

  6. Hi Jay,

are looking for some ideas for the backgrounds or "stat and powerbuilds" for a psyker? I might be able to help with the first, but not with the latter (I suck at it, big time!) :)

  7. Hi everyone,

welcome to the archive. I do not know how long it will last till all of this is burned, but for now it is here and since other places to store 40k-related RPG material sometimes end up... a bit in the "flux", I will dumb my old material here for now. Chunk by chunk and bit by bit. Drop by, if you like.

In hope that none of you is averse to PDF, I will start with a slightly revised, 2nd-edtion version of my old Lectures of the Tech-Witch (which you may download right here).

    Enjoy!

  8. Well, boo...

as you will have noted, this forum went into the "Archives", and this usually means a sharp decline in activity. Personally, I keep posting my material here (as long as I have an option to do so) because I have been a "forum regular" for many, many years. But all in all, I would not be surprised if I would -never- get any replies to it.

  11. „Rivals for Glory“ (the BlackCrusade(tm) adventure from the GM-Kit) makes uses of a lot
of random encounters as fillers between the relevant plot points, which is a fine thing if one
intends to add additional scenes to it. Setting the 40K background aside, the whole affair is
not unlike one of those high-fantasy adventures that dominated the RPG scene in the early
days, and so inspiration for a little extra comes easy. After all, anything goes!
In this document you will find additional encounters, some suggestions for changes to the
original module as well as ideas for optional rules to be used in the adventure

    Enjoy!

On that note, didn't someone here create a much longer, more exhaustive list of mutations inspired from the old WHFB? Might be something in there to adopt, too ...

    ^ !

I guess you are talking about this article from TheWorldSmith (forget about the forum search engine, use an internet search engine instead).

I had started something much, much smaller a long time.

  13. Hi there,

I would not give a character a bonus for falling into the hands of chaos. This will work well to tempt them, but I would rather toy a bit with the Malignancies (p.290 core rules).

First and foremost, do not roll them at random if you would rather like something special for the PC that fits the way the player portrait that character.

A lot of them can be easily tailored to have a slightly different reason for the game effect, and may be bend a bit to the Slaanesh-Way:

Morbid will work just as well when the character is not "gloomy" but "lusty" while the torture part can be kept.

Witch-Mark could just as well be one small, female breast on an otherwise male character, an overlong tongue that does NOT look normal, spiked/teethed genitalia. Or you could change the character to a hermaphrodite.

Waste Frame could be the lithe, sickening beauty of somebody that is just TOO thin.

Malign Sight does not need to be rot and decay, either. If once field of view is overlayed with scenes of pain and lust instead, it will be just as distracting.

Ashen Taste can be turned into "joyful self-punishment"

Last but not least, Strange Addiction is sooooo easy to toy with.

  14. Hi everyone,

I found out that the "follow" feature is not working anymore, at least not for me. I am following several forums and topics, but I do not get a notification about new topics anymore.

Did anyone had the same problems since Asmodee took over? I mailed the support weeks ago, but never got a reply. If anyone knows what this is all about and how to "reset" it, I will be oh so grateful to hear.

    Thanks in advance

  15. Hi from a fellow GM.

Could you please explain step-by-step how it works? I am a bit confused here.

For instance, my party fight Mechanicus. I roll one d10 and hit 2. I pick #2Results group and what do I do next? If I decide the first NPC shoots, do I simply pick 92 since it is the 1st result of the group? Is the same sequence applied for w/e I choose as an action of an NPC - movement, dodging, skill use result, etc.?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Vichn,

sorry for the late response. For one reason or another, I got no message in regard to the reply although I follow the topic :( Anyway...

You got it completely right! :) After you picked the result "92" for shooting (which is pretty much a miss) you cross it of and apply the next result to the next action that happens in this combat turn and so on... You only roll 1d10 at the start of each combat turn, so that you get a different row of results each time.

But I advise to decided upon the actions of your NPC before you roll the d10 to determine the "row of results" you are going to use. That way, you do not know the outcome of the actions as there are ten possible lines of results ;) And if an attack of a PC forces you to roll a dodge or parry action, you simply use the row of results you used last time... or roll for a new one, as you please!

  16.

Could you link to said how-to? As I've looked upon your blog and didn't see an easy way to find it.

    Hi WorldSmith,

    with pleasure! :)

By the by, if you hit this "list icon" in the upper right of my blog a menu bar appears. Part of this menu bar is a "Category" drop-down menu that helps to navigate my blog a little. But, I admit that it is not easy to navigate. I am more into writing stuff than into organizing internet thingies... but I grow better at it over time ;)

If you want to start such a cheat sheet on your own, I advise to use 108 terrible character portraits: they are everything else but terrible and they are !FREE! to use if you adhere to the attached license (which basically says: give credit. But, read it for yourself).

Good luck with your project, and if you have anything to share: do so! :)
