Congrats to everyone who played, especially the people who traveled so far.
Great to read, and hear that it went so well.

It is repeatable, and its favorite control friend VB is repeatable. And you don't kneel it - after Mycella comes out they are a very easy plus cost-effective way of wiping your board most turns. Plus you get the challenges out of it. I have returned the Red Viper to hand for goodness sakes many times, it is that good.
Comparing it to Writ Small or Lanni Pay Debts is not even apples to apples. Maybe Bear Island could be (although it is more restricted). But it is much easier/cheaper to get going, and the return to hand actually helps many times, and Stark doesn't have as a consistent 'follow-up' to keep boards clear as VB. Grey Wind is close, other than the fact that it is way more breakable, and kill is Stark's 'thing' so they don't have the other things to help as much.
Repeatable control > single time control. It is why cards are restricted - heck even Castellean.
I would be fine if #1 it knelt to use the ability, and #2 if it was restricted so you had to (boo-hoo) decided between which repeatable, easy-to-get going control you wanted
No banning is needed, but the combo with VB is tough. That being said, I am not surprised that it hasn't won tourneys. Well, they didn't have Mycella #1, but they can be beat by GJ choke, Lanni hyper-kneel, or Stark speed control.

I don't think I have ever sat in front of a certain house and said 'I lose'. Now a combo of person/deck/house? Yeah, I could see that - but many times I think I have a good match-up and lose or the other way around.
-
Two, for sure. Isn't that how they did on the HBO series as well?

I'm kind of intrigue about that famous "Cube Draft" that everyone talks about in the forums, looks a lot like the chinese game from how i met your mother (season 2 i think...in atlantic city) xD.
Can i find the rules for that anywhere?.....It seems a fun game that mixes cards with drinking and my meta (3 guys in Chile xS) is in need of something fun like that and is not like we can go to a tournament in the states or europe.
Well, Erick has his own cube specific rules, which actually were not as bad as I thought (I usually really don't like adding rules, but these were well-thought-out and easy to remember). He also gives out fairly standard draft packs (from CCG pre-rotation) for income and the such. He also alters cards to make them more playable, and has elevated quite a few cards to crazy-bomb-WTF status. Lastly, his cube is not highlander (1 of any card) like mine is. It is like aGoT on steriods to be sure.
Mine is different in that there are no rule chances, and no erratta to the cards. I only give out 5 plots per player (no draft packs), but they are very strong plots (there are the other top 25 plots or so in the game in the cube as well). I put 1X of any copy of the top 620 cards in the game in my cube, evenly distributed by house (except Martell, who gets slightly less). Lastly mine has no LCG cards other than restricted/banned ones. I feel we play the current cards plenty.
I would say creating one like mine is more easy, as Erick has been tweaking his for months it sounded like. Mine just grabbed all the best cards, and then sorted them by house to create an even distribution of characters/locations/house-specific events/attachments by house. I also tried to put in enough events that they are a big part of the game which is tough at 1X each. The other benefit of going this way, is that since there were no draft packs (other than plots, which I sleeve, unlike the regular cards, so easy to sort) is that there is no sorting after the games are over. I would not have wanted to be in Erick's shoes trying to take apart 10 decks at 2am after drinking.
When mine is done you just put the cards back in the box/cube. Again, not saying mine is better, just easier to put together and clean up after. I had a blast doing both this weekend. ~and I was undefeated in both, so there.

My plots were:
Summons
Buildilng Orders
Wildfire
Winter Storm
Alliance
You could go with 5-7 plots, your choice. Some used only 5, some used 6 or 7. And you can pick two houses to make an alliance (20 power of course) and use house-only cards from either. Erick gave a benefit to using only one house, and that was pretty cool, but again I am trying not to change many rules to make it very easy for new or older players.

I thought I'd post my results/thoughts here
Great to finally meet you, and even get a game in. We have been 'friends' on Facebook for some time, so glad the 'title' now matches.

I didn't know you were playing Ascension! Dang, I would have played, I have the whole dang thing.
Also annoyed that I had a fellow Doomtown player there, and I didn't know or bring a deck. Next time!

They will probably be releasing one or two more spoilers for it anyhow. As of right now we've only been spoiled on a few cards. There is something about 7 new plot cards that gets me excited since those are normally what makes or breaks a deck and game.
Yeah, I saw 90% of the expansion (they were nice enough to lay them out at least partially not on top of each other at Days of I&F). The plots are VERY strong, and there are some bomb cards to be sure as well. Some nice classics as well, many of which are needed for many Lanni builds.

The Grand Melee was released 2 weeks earlier than I expected. Do Deluxe Expansions normally get released earlier than you expect?
Amazon.com had The Grand Melee release date set for 11/30 and the same exact date for Lions of the Rock. May we expect this to be released sooner than that?
I'm just impatient and wondering. :-)
A couple of people I talked to at FFG said December, but Damon wasn't there so it wasn't the #1 person to ask.

Wow...cannot be cancelled. Right on the card. Not reading = losing.
Ah, well. Not the worst mistake I made over the weekend (that last shot was).

-
I think it is very viable in Targ as well. ~You will have to prove to me anything except those two.

Oh, and as I can attest in Erick's VERY modified cube draft, it is a REALLY good agenda without the set-up drawback

-
Wasnt' really a Maesters deck - one chain. But, yes, as I just said in another post...why not.
I better do a quick TR before I forget everything.
We left NE Nebraska about 11.30, met Dobbler at the MN/IA border, and made great time. About 30 minutes after arriving and greeting all our friends, we got 'thirsty'. Bought some FFG beverages, but might have added soemthing. Obviously I wanted nothing to do with competative Melee (although props to the players, very little drama compared to GenCon), so four of us went up to the mezzinine and hit my cube draft. Lord of Brew, Complord, Jesse (Wyndwalker) and I had a great time.
Went out to the bar, and proceeded to buy WAY too many shots and drinks. Just like GenCon I think I peaked on the going out a day too soon.
After the bar closes at 2am Dobbler and I go play some test games that I don't remember in the least and get to bed at 4.30 or so. Dobbler was up by 7.30...crazy. I slept in until 11.00+So, after already knowing I would scrub out of the tourney since I was going to play trait manip Lanni no matter what...and having a raging hangover...I knew this want' going to be pretty. Over .500 would be just fine, thank you very much.
Deck - Lanni trait manip with Maester agenda (changed from Wildlings last second). Lots of control cards, but nothing too exciting. Got to wear my Cleagane new t-shirt and now I can taunt Will (Kennon) that I actually played Lanni in a big tourney. Oh, and I wanted to try out the new Jaime as well, so 3X of him - more on that later. *sidenote props to Erick and his crew for playing Lanni successfullly. I can never go 'full kneel' and would have loved to actually play their decks (Dissension is good vs. full kneel), but it was cool to see it played, and played successfully*
Game 1: Name forgotten, grrr...really nice younger local guy playing Targ Dragons.
I got out to a good start, and cleared his characters fairly quickly. He did, however, get out plenty of influence and did the Summer/location that pops people back into hand combo. He Valar'd 2nd turn (never a good sign). However, that meant that he could only get one dragon out a turn, and I was winning challenges left and right. By the third turn he could put out Balarion the Black, but I had Syrio in play, so he had to return him to hand. Fourth turn I Flee'd and that was game. 1-0
Game 2: Again, horrible with names playing Greyjoy Winter choke.
A fairly new player, but a great deck. I didn't get a good start, and could never quite get it to not be Winter (he Seasick'd 2 times where my Carrion would have shuffled the season away), and that sucked since Lion's Gate get's 'turned off' by Winter. One turn I could have discarded two of his characters with one Dissension, but it was Winter still. I also saw all three of his Icy Fishermen...so it was a drawn out loss for me. He would have beat me quite easily if he didn't make some mistakes and forget to trigger some responses. 1-1
Game 3: Bara Knights, no name remembered again...sigh.
He flopped soem good knights, and two of the little new jousting weenies, but I always had the answer, be it kneeling, Dissension, Writ Small, Lanni Pays Debts, Red Wedding + Lions Gate. Lion's gate pretty much owns Bara, and I was expecting more of it, unluckily. 2-1
Game 4: GJ choke again, this time Kyle S. was the owner.
I only REALLY knew Kyle from Facebook, but got to know him better over the weekend which was cool. Anyways, he kept a fairly bad hand, and I was able to wipe his board 2nd turn I believe other than one Warship. I had plenty of protection for the Valar, and it didn't go too many plots that I remember. 3-1
So, I was 99.9% sure either I win the 5th round and make Top 8, or lose and get to go eat

Game 5: I think one of Erick's friends (?) playing GJ winter choke (3rd time in 5 games - woot!!!).
A new player, but obviously had played other CCG's before. He played it fairly flawlessly. I think I flopped Gilly three times in this tourney, vs. GJ Winter all three times
I think the only three games where I saw Jaime as well was post-flop vs. Winter (so...useless). He Fear of Winter'd 2nd turn, and hit my board pretty hard, I didn't have any claim soak. After that it was the usual GJ annoying slow win, I think a Valar was in there somewhere as well and he had plenty of saves. 3-2I came in 15th or 16th out of the 42 (?, 45?) which was fine. I REALLY don't enjoy the metagame right now, and knew I was hurting vs. choke and Martell Maesters, most likely the two most favorite things right now. Luckily, I got to see many of the cards from the next pack, and most of the Lanni box was on display as well. So I think I will be pretty excited moving forward.
However, I did go 6-0 in cube drafts after Friday night, and then Saturday's draft of Erick's cube. Taking that with the drunk draft of GenCon (5-0) ~now I can put all my efforts into the non-game that is drafting (especially with everyone drinking)! What other format will I have gone 2-0 vs. Nate and Erick this weekend?

I am sure there is a lot more, but I better get to work. Thanks to all my old friends, and now new friends for making the trip. I had a great tiem as always, and I am so tired I might pass out at my desk...as always after an agoT weekend. ~Oh, and Wayne, NE (population 5,000) DID have more players than Missouri...so go back to your Skyrim, wusses

-
I think this weekend sort-of proved the point. The 'Erick decks' or whatever you want to call them, had Maester's agenda with only one chain. Obviously I think it most likely would have won without it (the players can confirm that or not), but why not?

The art is just all-around good, IMO. Standouts are the Maiden of Poisons, Sunspear Tourney Grounds, Fiery Kiss, and Harrenhal. The First Snow of Winter DOES use the original art; sorry mathlete, it would seem the wights aren't through with you.
Holy Crap! They reprinted First Snow of Winter! LOL I knew about the reprint and Damon and I discussed the 'redsegn" of the card text. It was very nice of Damon to include me and allow me input. Honestly, I was asked about new art, but I LOVE the original art. Who doesn't love a little Wight-Boarding?
btw....I personally LOVE the new text. It's such a great offensive AND defensive card.
~Let the off-color jokes about Mr. Bruno and his...compainon renew!
Great pack really. Lots to chew on.

I happen to have a First Snow with a quote bubble done by the designer of that card

RANT RANT RANT!

Nah, this doesn't deserve one, we are not talking about design space/mechanics. Just playstyle and the meta.
I have the same issue, but the Maester agenda is too good not to run w/ 2-3 Maesters (Aemon and your house's Maester du jour usually for me) and 2-3 links. If you can't win 2-3 challenges first or second turn, then your deck has failed. You get an effective 6/0/1 plot, attachment control, deck thinning, and some other toolbox use...no houses can't use that. Oh, and many houses then get to easily use Outwit which is strong.
Your playstyle is your playstyle. I am just saying no deck has a viable reason not to run it (again, not saying you can't win without one...your chances just go up). Even power rush, which gets all the beni's and a great Maester that protects vs. Valar *shrug*

Thanks some really useful suggestions there - I'd completely forgotten the uses of Wildfire assault. Lots of the others I'd just not used before.
Now I just REALLY need the King's Landing Reprints to arrive, so I can get things like Condemned by the Council...
The new(er) Put to the Torch (sorry, I forget names! The win a military with a War credit dude to burn two locations) is a stand-in for Condemned. Many houses can have a War Crest sub-theme fairly easily (Bara and Stark for sure, but Lanni and Targ have a few good ones as well).

But really, If I can't even make it to Kublacon like an hour away, would you really expect me to make it out to Roseville, Minnesota?
Don't get me started, don't EVEN get me started

Yyyeeeeppp...
I have mine (~the ORIGINAL aGoT cube) ready to go as well, and it has room for 10 I just confirmed. All order cards, with the exception of banned/restricted cards since we don't get to play with them as much (was my logic).
As Erick said, cube drafting is a TON of fun, and can also help to bring newer players into the game. It is hard not to draft awesome cards.

Oh man. Anyone think they can grab me (or somehow find a way to part with their) deckbox at the event? That's the thing with Jaime on it right? If so, that's awesome!
~Oh, you don't want to go or play or pay, but you want the loot? Sounds like a Sactowner...

How do I play?
Rarely, and for fun (hopefully with beers).
(sorry, had to!

So this doesn't seem to be as big as it was last year. I'm guessing because Martin isn't going to be there? Is the Missouri Meta really only bringing one person?
So more victory for Illinois!!!! BWHAHAHAHAHAH!!!
~Making...one?

Yeah, I think GRRM not coming is huge, and part of it is just bad timing and that it isn't new and shiny like last year. We will still have a ton of great players though (present company excluded).
-
~Because they are bad?
Seriously though, you are right that 90% of cards don't see the light of day, especially as the card pool grows. Maybe 10% of those are very situational cards, that might see action in a very specific deck. And maybe 5% of those are cards that you might find a use for 'later in life' as different cards work with that card better. ~Like when all the Bannermen love starts coming out, and we all dust of them

Just a fact of life. Bara knight/asshai chud #47 in the very hard to find space for 3-cost spot has to be pretty silly to beat out the cards successful Bara decks play in the 3-slot. *shrug* We only have 0-15 slots for events @ 3X each normally, so it takes a heck of a card to beat out Game of Cyvasse, or Paper Shield, or whatever your poison is.

Layton problem can be solved with single playing of Nightmares.
And speaking about Nightmares - would this be a good counter to at least slow maesters a bit if I'm running Baratheon Power Rush deck without completely rebuilding deck to include influence and without loosing efficiency against other builds ?
i was thinking Nightmares as well - it blanks traits correct? That would allow the 'fall-off' of the chains.
