So i didn't play Martell at GenCon, and Ghaston Grey didn't hit the table against me, but I wanted to double check, since I keep hearing about it in so many TR's and in 2C1CLP.
Is the basic strategy for using this to return dupes of your own nobles (Arianne and Red Viper I'm guessing) to your hand to minimize the damage to yourself while using this against the opponent? If not, what am I missing? Do people use nobles other than those two to power it usually?
Thanks folks!
The cheapest (so the best) is Edric Dayne who is the Brotherhood 3-cost one (with a decent ability as well).
It is really awesomeness to use him in a challenge, or Game of Cyvasse, and then get him. Since it is any time during the challenge, it keeps your opponent very off guard. Combo with Game and V. Blade and you have some serious board control. Lastly, it doesn't kneel, so if you want, you can use Arianne AND Edric on the same turn if you have the $$ and it makes sense.
~I TRIED to tell the 2C1chump folks how broken it was right when it came out, but they rated it in the bottom 5 of that chapter pack. And I will never let them forget it...

This was your favorite episode? Really? Jeez, we were all nearly asleep when we recorded it. I guess we need to follow that formula
Mainly subject matter. You guys stayed on topic more than usual (not that I mind the other stuff, usually I really like it - it just seemed to be chock full of good info and I love TR's). It showed experiences of different records and decks. *shrug*

Probably my favorite episode. Well done, and great to hear everyone's responses from 0-2 drop to Champion. I had forgotten Z was a 16 seed...if I had one more minute in my game and won it non-timed I would have knocked him out (me being 18th with a timed win). And that would have sucked since I would have gotten owned, and he had a great chance to win. Congrats again!
Jonathan Benton better watch out though...he has some admirers in Missou..if I were him I would shave that beard before visiting.

My 5th favorite out of 5. At least at the end of 4 it really ramped up - especially the Cercei stuff.
Nothing happened. Seriously. A bunch of stuff kind of happened, and then didn't. A camping excursion up North, its COLD!. Some sailing aruond, some SHIPS!. Dany whining again for 10 chapters - to the point that for the 2nd straight book I skipped her stuff and then read it afterwards. We knew she was going to ride a dragon since the end of the first book. WOO_HOO it happened!
I was hoping repeated times for some major action. When Dany was getting married I was all geared up for something. And then she is married. Then various semi-major characters were all on their way to 'rescue' her from 10 more chapters of whining...and then didn't get there.
I was geared up for Jon to lead SOMEBODY to war again. And then he gets psuedo-killed (BTW Martin has gotten more and more into this - more main characters have been brought back from apparent death than killed in the last three books by a ratio of 5:1 by my unofficial count).
I am sure people will say that Martin was doing this on purpose, or surprising us with lack of surprises or something crazy. But what I loved about his books were that they were packed with EVENTS. Surprises. Maybe I have read him enough to be unimpressed by the 'surprises' (i.e. usually SOMEONE IS ALIVE AGAIN!!!).
The epoligue was by far the best chapter. And it wasn't the 5th best in 3 or 2. *shrug* Like MadK it has lost the luster a bit. It took me weeks to finish the book, I was expecting a day or two.
That all being said, I am really optimistic about #6...all this setting up HAS to go somewhere!

Good to read the various thoughts on the questions though...some interesting theories!

I don't read any gaming magazines, or frequent too many gaming-related sites other than Cool Stuff; I wonder if they are, or would consider, advertising the game in some way other than word-of-mouth?
Once, they had a few commercials on...Cartoon Network? Sci Fi Channel (sorry, Scyfy channel or whatever they call themselves now)? But I haven't seen anything in quite awhile.
I always thought they should give out a card when a new book comes out or something - I didn't notice if they advertised in the back of the book this time (I have seen it there on reprints at least).

Choke still has a pretty strong stranglehold unless you can get Bobert out on setup.
Really? Bara has such great reducers (and strong weenies), I am surpised by this. If you get a great choke set-up (multiple of that warship that stops the first trigger in marshalling) I guess.

Both aGoT and WH (and any LCG really) could really use some help from FFG to tell them where to start, especially now that you are looking at a potentially overwhelming # of sets and cards. One of the big plusses for LCG is also a minus - if you want the cards, there is a large amount of product you have to order. Yes, it is cheaper than a CCG, but it is intimidating to see X number of chapter packs and expansions (and as people stated, 3X core set). aGoT's reprints (other than Core) are 3X, so hopefully that is the rule.
**BTW excuse my comparisons to aGoT, but it is an LCG with a limited, fantasy background, designed by the same guy, and I play both having dropped CoC so can't use that very well (and LoTR is co-op)**
1. There needs to be a 'new to the game' tab on both front pages, and a sticky on the forum. In aGoT we get a TON of threads started by new players, and bless those who post the same thing 80 times. AEG does a great job with L5R, you get free cards (Imperial Gift, now on its 3rd version) and it has both a dedicated web page (What House are you!?!) and a dedicated thread.
2. agoT has done this a tad better, but make viable strategies with certain cycles. You could just have the Brotherhood cycle in aGoT at least, and make a pretty darn fun and viable deck. Same (unluckily) with Maesters. Clansmen. Boltons. The list goes on. With my experience in WH there are less (viable) subthemes, so it is harder to make a deck using just Core + set of chapter packs X.
3. Get OP (organized play) going again! SO many people started playing aGoT back in the day due to the Night's Watch. Cool theme decks we used to play against (Wildlings! Spider deck!) and promos (Tyrells). Last year they had one such promotion, and it wasn't bad (the Hand of the King). WH had nothing I know of? At least nothing that caught the eye. Couple that with lackluster themes/support for leagues, and it is tough to see people playing it in a store.
Don't get me wrong, FFG has a tough road. Both properties are not 100% golden, although obviously HBO's series has helped aGoT. They have a TON of other games (they were the 3rd largest booth at GenCon). There is definately a lower return on semi-competative environments in playtesting, OP, support, prizes and the such. But, those things make a long-running game, rather than better profit on the short-term (IMHO of course!).

Pretty lousy price support. I mean how much would it cost ffg to give out at least 1 or 2 ffg games. Even if it isn't WHI related, a copy of LotR lcg or Blood Bowl should not be a problem to give out. I'm very disappointed to hear that and despite visiting gencon and play strong opponents there isn't anything that could attract more players. I mean it's not a gencon side tourney for whi, it is world championship.
Jsut know it was as bad for aGoT with 3X the number of players...so don't feel bad! I think they are hiring a OP (orgainized play) person, so maybe that will help?

+1 on the black borders. Heck, I even see other games and am jealous. They just looked more...um...professional or something it seemed.
-
~What, after meta'ing against the deck it still did well? I can't believe it, everyone said that as soon as people see how good the deck is they can put in a few cards and beat it fairly easily. That is what I get for trusting in the boards.

On a serious note though - thanks for posting, and especially for the TR. Some very interesting ideas, and we appreciate the details!

I had a good Lanni build as well, but I just couldn't stay away from the 'draw three' Martell character!

It was the first time since 1903 that a hurricane made landfall in the Jersey Shore.
Flooding of some of the local rivers was the worst it had been since the 1860's
I pre-emptively apologize. A ton of people were affected to be sure, and it was somewhat historic (which is what I thought).
Again, we have a 200-year flood (although some of it was man-made due to damns and the Corps of Engineers) and I know a TON of people who have lost their home, and two that basically lost their town - and you never hear of it. But that has nothing to do with any suffering on the East Coast and I know it. Sorry!
-
Just curious, since I knew this would be WAY overhyped (~like anything on the East Coast, where the sun sets and rises according to East Coast people).
When is the last time a hurricane actually hit NYC? You would think that would be as big of a historical deal as the San Fran earthquakes.
Seriously though, glad everyone here made it without many issues. And glad the Midwest floods of 2011 did about 10X more damage and got 10 times less coverage.

Didn't I hear that people were having a hard time finding a Core set? Guess it pays to hit Tarjay!

Typical spoiled Lannister nonsesne. The Seven forbid one of their many baby killing, murderous charcters isn't an OP bomb. Heavens no!
You be quiet!
You know if this was the first version spoiled of some great Bara character, you would be the one posting 'nonsence'.

Given Lannister's ongoing strength in joust, there would probably have been groans from the global meta if they were given a brand new atom-bomb unique (who, as there's no competing versions, would be pretty much an auto if he was above a certain power level).
~I think you have Lannister confused with Martell...
Seriously though, he isn't a bad card - as I said Joust is a really good ability, and I think FFG is toning down the Joust cards since that keyword can be really good. I just wish he had Deadly

-
Viper is amazing. Certainly as good as his other option.
Jaime is cool, although a crest would have been nice. He already has two good versions, but getting 3-4 power on him makes him very beefy.
Smalljon is cool for MP, and nice and simple.
Mountain is horrible. The Joust mechanic used to be so overpowered, I think FFG is gunshy? Again, this is in a vacuum, so maybe he combos with something. We have been waiting SO LONG for him, I was hoping for something better...and yes DEADLY.

On a different topic: I must say that I think the Tin Link is quite a bigger problem than the Apprentice Collar or the TMP agenda.
Tin is pretty crazy recurring nuetral attachment removal. It isn't all that since it can't hit Raven cards or Chains (probably the two most widely played attachments), but it is the best nuetral recurring control of any type of perm card in the game. Easily. Better than V. Blade (which isn't nuetral, but probaby the 2nd best perm control). Half of the time, Tin is why I play Maester Agenda since it easily shores up any house's weakness to attachments. Any non-Maester deck is still getting Collar and Tin...maybe one more (Gold sometimes?).
And, yes, Joff is immune to the Initiate as I read it. Dominance: Kneel Initiate of the Citadel to choose 1 character. Return any number of attachments on that character to their owners' hands.

I don't cosider it just "speculation" about how OP the new chains are goign to be after three+ months of seeing them pretty ubiquitously at meetups and in discussions.
How about 3+ months of people putting Old Nan and Initiate of the Citadel in their decks?
On Joff? ~You reading cards lately?

Both Ben adn rings sum up my feelings really well. The next three months look like they will be really silly with hte pwoer of teh Chains. I can't beleive they jumped all over TLS before he even saw play and the Chain thing is just goign to play out. Sigh.
Back to OP - i think Wildlings are halfway decent right now - the effieicnt stealthy characters with +1 STR can complement a few different builds form a few different Houses. And its not liek teh Wildling horde is unplayable - you can still get ti at a sizable discount. You just need to build in a win condition for your deck.
Well, TLS already had a very strong combo in place w/ Val and the plot. I have to agree, that next to some of the other power combos going off now, and the semi-resergence of Targ, it isn't broken, but it was too easy to get 3X card/turn (plus blanket discard control, plus some other combos like the discard down to 4 event) in a house where that was supposed to be the weakness. The chains were far from an issue at GenCon IMHO, they really start to get strong adding in another 4 or whatever abilities (draw and mill being very good strategies). But I feel your pain!

I have seen some good Wildling decks, especially out of Bara (where they can use the stealth in a few different ways - that location that stands stealth-y chars plus the attachment that makes locations viligant is cool).

Bastard is coming back, at least according to the spoiler article, which is probably healthy for the game in general.
Good, but not great, since you can still place chain attachments on the character due to rulings (although the old ones do go away, and if you recyle them they can't go on the same person).
Ill Tidings ins't an answer. Nor is Frozen (are people even reading the Chains?). It gives you a second of breathing room with net card disadvantage.
After a few more chains are available, it is going to get interesting (hmmm...should I mill you, or wipe your board, or just draw/income...?).
Not saying it can't be disrupted, just that it is pretty hard using a lot of your resources to disrupt one of many win conditions in such a deck (if built right). All for the low-low price of...free and start in play effects that thin your deck to make it easier to draw the cards you want. *shrug*
I think something will be done. And it probably will be good for the game - as the changes in the past have had people yelling and then just go away.
Back to the original - I would love to have seen the Wildlings get a -1 reduction instead, only for uniques or the such. But, that is doubtful by now. I would love them to be more playable (full disclosure, I built the Stark Wildling deck which isn't horrible and went 3-3 at GC piloted by Wyndwalker, but it isn't anything to write home about).

So I keep hearing about Ghaston Grey...

Me: This means they can never print a 2 cost martell noble...
This is my problem - I assume they will have to restrict the card someday, otherwise they can not print any more 3 OR 2 strength nobles IMHO. Or anything that gives the noble trait. ~Martell restricted card #84 FTW!!!
