  1. The art of this AP has been the typical mixed bag for me. In concept and excecution, Stealthy Byakhee, Pagan Hall, Clever Zoog, Descedant of Eibon and Total Eclipse are the cream of the crop. Was there a 'special' meaning for the 'g, h' in the Eibon piece? I won't bother to speak of the mediocre work. The least appealing is Stealing the Glory. A truely uninspired scene and an amateur rendering. Shadow Sorceress ranks second worst. Where are the 'shadows' ? There is absolutely no mythos atmosphere here. She looks like a poorly costumed convention goer! The computer generated light effects are not helpfull. I applaud the attempt with Coffee House. The smokey atmosphere is nice but the card function does not match the theme of the artwork. The flavor text reads, "They really don't come for the coffee" but coffee would actually stimulate explaining the readying where cannibus or hashish would generally achieve the opposite. These are mere details that only a critical analysis notices. Overall I'm pleased with 'Tides'.
  2. Why was this thread started in GD and not Deck Building? Maybe it could be relocated?
  3. To varying degrees I agree with what alot Kotwica has said. Who could deny that there is room for improvement? Alot of improvement in some areas! Where our opinions differ is mainly due to the fact that I'm a casual player where Kotwica is a competetive player. The reset button has been pushed and the meta is much like it was back during the Arkham days. It'll take a while before we can engage in discussions of deeper strategy. The group of new players in our leagues are having a good time, myself included. For the sake of the more competetively minded I hope that Nate and Mr. Hata will make decisions that soon creates a meta less random and deeper strategically. The post did come off as bitter but behind the bile there are some indisputable facts. I embrace them and hope for improvement. Wow! What a timely image! Where the heck did you find that Donald2? jhaelen said: Kotwica said: Sup friends, This error is just another sad scar on a game that once had so much potential. These AP's are terrible even without the editing errors though. I always believed that AP's should have 20 great meta changing cards in each pack. I pushed for good cards when I play-tested, but I was ignored. You are lucky if you get 3 good cards in these packs. I saw everyone cheering that the game is going to have more AP's. Most people seemed to talk about the flavor in the future packs. It is good for FFG that people will buy their AP's even when the cards are functionally poor. Just imagine what this game could have been with someone more creative and passionate in charge of it. I remember when the forums were alive with deep strategy discussions. Now there seems to be mostly either complaining or cheerleading. It is also very funny that FFG says that the game is selling better than expected. I am sure they expected to sell not many of these AP's. If you set your goal low, then you can't be disappointed. I'm sure they would never release the actual number of these AP's that were printed. An example of this is D&D 4.0 Edition Player's Handbook 2. It sold out of the first printing in one week and did better than expected according to WotC. It was sold out for months while the second printing was being done. Guess how many books were printed in the first printing? ..............11,000. That was shocking to me considering how many people play Dungeons & Dragons here. I bet the print runs on those AP's is much much lower. P.S. Got to love that new organized play system. I just love posts like this! How about adding some sources for your claims?
  4. So what do you think of the typo on the Shub card 'Summoning Circle' ? Disappointing to say the least. Knelt ? WTF !
  5. Tomarrow we start our second Adventure League using again the 'Heads Of Fate' senario. Most enjoyed the senario the remainder were neutral to it. I hope we have another senario to choose from by Dreamlands. If not I'll make something up myself. In our leagues each participant payed a league fee of $1 a week = $6 a league x 9 players = $54. This paid for the league kit and left plenty for other prizes, like a custom made trophy, a custom made league champion t-shirt and more. For this coming league I'm burning a special Mythos soundtrack compilation to play quietly as background for our leagues. My store can't keep Core Sets in stock because they're selling so quick! As you can see the initial league set up has worked well for my local community but flexability is good so all communities can make it work.
  6. The '1 Core Set' limitation is for the adventure leagues and I'm sure it will also apply to the leagues at GenCon. No such limitation has ever been announced for Worlds '09. It's safe to assume that Worlds will include 3 of any LCG card.
  7. The Dreamlands tales are rich ground to draw from. It should be a very dynamic set of Asylum Packs, however if done in only half measures it would be very unsatisfying, like Cthulhu-lite. After the success of 'Summons of the Deep' I am confident that Nate and his team will deliver with Dreamlands. We still have 3 APs to go in the current cycle and I really like Pagan Hall so I'm hoping that we see more iconic Lovecraft locations, characters and items. With the black-border days behind us the white-border game is lacking much of that which is Lovecraftian. I'd expect that Core II will help remedy that with some improved re-prints. I too enjoyed the Day/Night mechanic and I'm so happy to see it's coming back! Iconic cards like The Silver Key need to be playable to the point of slightly over-powered much like the 'Champion' cards. Maybe a 3 cost Neutral Artifact that gives your character Willpower , Toughness +2 Heroic and the Dreamer subtype. If it's an attachment it should return to hand after going to the discard from play. If you could attach it to your opponents character that would be a way to get rid of Villianous characters! There was a theme in much of the Dreamlands literature where a character in the 'waking world' was a simpleton or a nobody but in the Dreamlands his counterpart or 'dreamself' was a king or some powerful being. On the flipside, a powerful individual in the waking world would often be a non-entity in the parallel universe of the Dreamlands. I hope that aspect is played upon somehow if not with The Silver Key itself. This announcement has really got the juices flowing. Just what this forum needed!
  8. So now we see a little of what Marius has been up to. Nice article and interesting cards. Pagan Hall is gonna be a force! Nice artwork as well. Shadow Sorceress is interesting if not playable but I don't care for the artwork. It's not dark or Mythosy enough. The Terror of the Tides seems like a nice little surprise. This Asylum Pack will be the first new release for our second local Adventure league and what a start we will have!
  9. I'd bet with the time it takes for concept, playtesting and printing, that we are well past the window of opportunity to suggest a theme for the next AP block. Regardless of that fact, I suggest 'Dreamlands' or a 'Da Vinci Code' - like story.
  10. Here in Dayton Ohio at Bell,Book & Comics we have 8 participants in our 1st league. We expect to increase that number by at least 2 players for the next league in May. We are currently in our 5th week and I must say that I'm thrilled with the enthusiasum and sportsmanship! A Shub/Hastur deck is dominating followed by, surprise surprise a Hastur/Shub deck and in third a tricky Cthulhu/M.U. deck. In the end, after well over 100 official league matches have been played, not a single card has been traded between opponents! It's problematic that the human factions seem to be doing so poorly and Shub is so dominant. Initially we had trouble getting 'Spawn of the Sleeper' in the store and consequently delayed the start of league play by a week. A phone call to FFGs got everything cleared up. I'm guessing because of the timing of Bromens' departure the League kit got to us very late and I'm less than satisfied with the quality of it's contents. The store owner and I are throwing in alot of cool stuff to make the prizes worthwhile. Overall the league format has attracted players to the game that would not have otherwise invested in a Core Set and 4+ APs.
  11. Three cheers for Buatha! Hip hip!..... Seriously though, that is a nice little demo video even though it is a bit dry. It almost made me want to try AGOT. I'd expect Cthulhu will get equal treatment.
  12. I really like the current format of the Asylum Packs, not to say that there couldn't be variations or improvements in the future. I desire to participate in multiple formats which would include leagues, competetive tournaments and casual play and so far for my money the APs are working out. I do have to say that I love the themed serialization of the Julia Brown saga with the poster inserts! Hey Hastur! Still planning on running leagues in my area?
  13. You're not alone. All though Call of Cthulhu the Card Game is not limited strictly to Mythos horror. It is also 'Pulp' but this is not a free license to cheapen the wonderful flavour and atmosphere of the game with lame slap-stick. I guarantee you some will say, "Lighten up! It's only a game." or " Your vision for the game is too limited" but I feel that atmosphere is vital to the heart of this game and cheap laughs will only serve to weaken that. If you want Mythos laughs play Munchkin Cthulhu. As an example of my 'limitations'- from the 'Ancient Horrors' AP, 'Norm Grzbowski'- football coach sucks in so many ways I can't even begin to say but 'Cafeteria Lady' I can live with (barely). 'Ghoul Thrill Seeker' is an all time low. I can't help but think what really cool card we might have gotten in it's place! Another example of where I draw the line, the flavour of the 'Indy' movies, the recent 'Mummy' movies or even 'Cast a Deadly Spell' would be acceptable but for instance is exactly what we don't need. In conclusion, for me the 'bigger picture' is, the art and overall flavour is very satisfying and I really am enjoying the serialization of the APs.
  14. 'Eat the Dead' a Shub support reads; Response: When attached character is destroyed, attach it and Eat the Dead to any domain you control as resources. I really like this card but I fear it is not as strong as I originaly assumed. Is it correct that it cannot be triggered in response to a combat struggle? Only Disrupts and Forced Responses can take place during struggles and the 'Responses to struggles and success box' is too late?
  15. When event cards are played from whereever , you drain a domain with the appropriate resources 'if neccessary' and pay any additional costs. The effect/s resolve completely before the event card goes to your discard. Sacrificing a character is part of the cost to play 'Shocking Transformation'.
  16. Helmageddon said: I am a new player to this game and i really enjoy it. I am moving to arizona this summer and i want to continue to play but i am unsure of where to look and when the leagues will be taking place. Any advice on this would be awesome, i also play the game of thrones card game and any advice about where to find players for that would be awesome as well. Thanks for the help guys. Where in Arizona? A local Ohio player just returned from school in Penix so you may have lost one there. I have a friend in Sierra Vista with quite a collection but he is the only player in that entire dusty town!
  17. tazbro said: I'm not sure how the 2 coin Cthulhu ability works: "Deep One Raid: After you play a Deep One character from your hand, choose and destroy a Support card with a printed cost lower than the printed cost of the Deep One just played." Ok ... is it mandatory? I sure don't want to destroy any of my Called by Azathoth curses! For this weeks trade .... I have to decide if I want to trade my Blackmore Estate. And if so, what for? Shotgun Blast, Paul Lemond, short fuse, Deep One Assault (which will be more useful in week 4 and on). Ah ... I got till Monday to decide. I agree with the assessment that Blackmore Estate should not be underestimated. Thanks solely to 'BE' I have won a league practice game with a Cth/Yog deck when the game had stalled in a huge arms race! Out of the three you mentioned, if I'm sitting across the table from you I fear most Agencys' ability to wound. Deep One Assault is very good but loyal is rough. The Cthulhu faction historicaly for this game has had a penchant for destruction and this inclination also includes self-destruction. Just look at the 'Big Guys' ability as an example, Forced Response: After a player draws cards during his draw phase, he must sacrifice a character, if able. (I like the syngergy with Local Sheriff) In the end you may end up sacrificing Cthulhu himself! However we are not talking about a 'card' ability here. We are talking about a Faction Head ability and all the abilities are benefits that have no inherent drawbacks built in. The ability is quite narrow and limited so for the cost I'd rule that it's optional (Response) and not a mandatory (Forced Response). This is not based on any official rulings so take it for what's it's worth, the opinions of a bitter whining 'old timer'. I do find it amusing that new players are commenting on the percieved whining and negative presence of 'old timers' on these forums when such comments are only and truely whining and only produce more strife and negativity. Just celebrate your thing and let sleeping dogs lie. By the way, my group of players are lovin' the Leagues I'm runnin' as a Servitor and I am thuroughly enjoying the new cards and format. Nate in my opinion is to be congratulated. Ohh, and white borders suck.
  18. 1) To get up to speed download and print the faq on the support page which can be accessed through a Cthulhu LCG article on the above News link. Read it and the rules booklet thuroughly. Read the article 'Deck Building 101' which can be found in the 'Deck Building' section of these forums. Be sure to post any initial questions you might have. Introduce some friends to the game. Slap together some decks using one or both of your core sets if needed and play, and then play some more. Any rules questions that cannot yet be answered through play and reading the faq/rules booklet use the forums here and its' 'Rules' section to get your answers. Finding an experienced player or play group in your area (game store) can really get things rollin'. Become a Servitor who demos the game at a local hobby shop and runs official leagues and tournaments. This game has supported Regional, National and World Championships in the past so if your the competitive type keep an eye out for that. 2) Yes and no. The Core Set cards are 'reprints' of black bordered ccg cards but a good number of those 'reprints' have been altered and improved. 3) Yes you can certainly mix white and black bordered cards for casual play but the current Adventure Leagues will not allow it and we've yet to be informed by Fantasy Flight Games whether or whether not the black bordered cards will ever again be allowed in any other future officially supported events. 4) Some one else might be able to give you better advice in this area. I will say that this site is not very well structured or organized so you may have to comb back through the subject headings. Unfortunately many of the same questions are asked and answered over and over again but don't fear to ask them if you can't find the answers in past posts. There are a bunch of willing and helpfull folks on these forums and generally associated with this game.
  19. Agency 2 * John S. Cordovan Infamous Busybody and Do-Gooder 1 Citizen C Forced Response : Remove a T and C struggle from a story that John Cordovan is commited to. h After a story that John S. Cordovan is commited to resolves sacrifice John S. Cordovan. a r "Now see here gentlemen, there is no need for violence. Can't we all just get along?", a last words of John S. Cordovan. c t e r
  20. Yeah, my store was charged for 2 kits weeks ago and was told weeks ago that the kits were on their way and yet still no kits. I'll just hope the kits arrive very soon and refrain from stating the obvious about FFGs support.
  21. Cornered Man, I like the artwork and it matches the concept, nice flavour. I wonder how much play it will see being a 4 cost neutral. Muddy waters, decent artwork that provokes creepyness. One of Julias' gentleman callers? Dude! That's why they call'em 'one night stands'. At 2 cost and exhaust I question it's merit though. Howard Ludvinski, visiting artist ?! For me the artwork is corny and over the top. An artist with a tentacle slung over his shoulder?! The ability seems like somebody was grasping for straws with this one. I expect better than this but then for every 2-4 sweet cards a turd is bound to drop occasionaly.
  22. Dadajef said: Not when he comes in play, but each time he is committed to a story you must remove an icon struggle of your choice. You can't choose to do or not to do it, you must do it. So immediately after the professor is commited his controller has to decide which struggle is removed? Could for instance the controller make the decision later in the story phase after the opponent has counter commited? As I explained from the begining this is a timing question.
  23. Dadajef said: You have your responses :-) and #3 It's not a Triggering effect, it's a permanent effect, you can't cancel it for exemple, so leave Albert like that. It's not an errated card !!! Thank you for your responses. So when is the choice made? When Albert comes into play it's controller chooses a struggle and it remains as such or when Albert commits the controller chooses? Timing is our issue.
  24. Since this is the fourth day for some of my questions to go unanswered I guess I'll have to rely on my own instincts. #1 Each player chooses their own domain. #2 If only one player meets the requirements the effect can still be triggered. #3 Eratta Professor Albert Wilmarth to say " Response: When...". #4 The allied faction is optional and a player can choose to play a mono faction deck. #5 The 'then' clause will be applied to the ability.
  25. It seems the questions are piling up. In the 'ADVENTURE LEAGUE SURVIVAL GUIDE' in ENCOUNTER ONE: "HEADS OF FATE" the faction head Hastur has an ability; Lapse of Reason (Cost 1 currencey tokens) - Each time you play a Madness event card, choose a character controlled by an opponent. That character goes insane. Then, shuffle the Madness event card back into your deck. Does this ability function like a card in the respect that if the player can't accomplish the first part (choose a character controlled by an opponent. That character goes insane) then the part that follows 'then' (shuffle the Madness event card back into your deck) can not happen?
