A Forced Mission is a card that the Imperial player can buy and play right at the end of a mission, to force another mission to happen immediately (before the Rebel upgrade Stage). It gets played with the same threat level as the mission played before it. After the mission is complete, the campaign resumes as normal.
-
At the end of every mission the heroes randomly choose one side mission from the side mission deck. Every second mission that they do will be a side mission so after a while they'll have a few to openly choose from.
I'm pretty sure there are only ever 2 side missions as an option, max. You only reveal a new one after completing a side mission. (Agenda missions could also be available, but only 2 regular side missions.)

There are lots of people around who provide painting services, if you're willing to pay for it.
In the end though, as much as it's in the "miniatures" category, it's a board game, and having it painted is absolutely completely optional. -
I take it then it would be recommended to do the tutorial mission rather than jumping right in to Aftermath?

So my game arrived today (YAY!)
Sleeving, punching, cleaning (and reshaping) the minis, and organizing it all took a pretty large chunk of the day, but frankly it was fun going through all the components.
thereisnotry - I used the plano box you recommended for the cards, and it worked perfect!
For the miniatures, I found a cheap bead organizer I had in my house worked perfectly. It's pretty much identical to this one:
For the counters, I used a counter tray by GMT Games:

Again, it seemed to fit all the counters just perfectly (although damage and strain counters have to be divided into a few different "cups".
These 2 other trays fit in the box, and then I have the individual characters (hero card and class decks) each in their own baggy, and the map tiles are sorted into outdoor tiles in one bag, indoor tiles in another bag (with the smaller tiles in a separate bag inside the larger bag), and transition tiles in another bag. This all fits in the box fine with the rules and the AT-ST.
So now I'm basically already for my campaign! We start on Saturday.

Thanks for the answer Leveton.
Has someone done a breakdown of the dice in percentages? Like Red will be 3 damage x%, 2 damage y%. Green will be 2 surge x%, 1 damage y%. That would be very helpful. It seems like the dice in this game are going to be harder to learn than in X-wing.
Never tell me the odds.

There's no reason why you couldn't do this. For a "roleplaying" experience, people often like to only control one character, but ther'es no reason you couldn't have each player control 2 characters.

I hope most people realize my comment above was in jest.
And to be honest, the way they put it together is brilliant, marketing-wise. They're going to make a killing, and I'm happy to be chipping in for it.
For those who want to just see it as a boardgame, they can, and they will get a fuller game experience with the cardboard token characters there, rather than not.For miniature gamers, they understand that this is a Core Set, something to be expanded on, and are going to jump in and grab the expansions anyway.

No need for apologies, thereisnotry, I should have looked more closely at it, and frankly, I don't know if it would all fit with that other container. Certainly once the expansions roll in, then there's no way everything will fit in the box anyway, so it doesn't matter. My Plano box arrived in the mail yesterday actually, and it looks very sturdy, and I'm very impressed and am sure it will work very well.

But it does seem strange to have cardboard tokens for characters, when this isn't even a board game, but a MINIATURES game.

I believe this one will fit and hold the cards:

Probably what I would have ordered had I realized the other one wouldn't fit. Oh well! -
Should be soon. I believe I saw someone on BGG post that they had bought their copy from FFG in-person at their store.
-
-
This is what I've been told, and I've seen others talk about it on the BGG forums before. I don't think I've seen too much evidence of it, though. And yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about it, and I wouldn't be surprised if current lamination materials are much better than ones 20 years ago anyway.
-
lamination is not good for the cards, long term. If your hope is that in 20 years or more, you can still be playing the game, you might find the lamination has broken down your card, and it might start falling apart, or getting brown splotches, etc.

It's talked about a bit here:
http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/128728-3-player-skirmish/
I think it's very doable (see my post near the bottom for an example), but you'd have to modify or create your own scenario for it. -
Lion Rampant, the Canadian distributor, stated earlier today that they had started shipping, starting with BC first (so I assume they are starting with the west coast and working their way east), so, it shouldn't be too long! Certainly by end of the week, I would think.
-
Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. Already have all the ally and villain packs on pre-order. Whether I jump into future expansions is going to depend on how much my friends want to play the game. I have a regular campaign night set up, but it's every other week, so it's going to take us a awhile to go through the campaign just once.
-
I have them all ordered as on pre-order. I very much hope they all come in at the same time. I believe with X-Wing waves, they come in at the same time, so I would be surprised if they don't.

I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into these, though I find the Stormtroopers intimidating to paint, as I want them looking spot on.
A tip for doing the stormtroopers.
Basecoat them in white, and then apply a clear glossy varnish.
Then do the black parts. If you get any black where you don't want it, it will wipe off extremely well with just a moist paper towel (or often just your finger.) Just make sure to do another coat of varnish after doing the black right away, before you start playing with the minis, as the paint will scrape off the minis easier than if it was just on primer (of course, that's the whole point.)

Not exactly news, as most people know their copies are coming soon, if they don't already have them, but the FFG "Upcoming" page officially updated Imperial Assault to "Shipping Now".

Question about (side & forced) missions
in Star Wars: Imperial Assault
Posted
Actually, looking at the rules, I'm a tad confused about Forced Missions.
In the Agenda Cards section, it says that the forced mission occurs immediately after it is purchased. But it's purchased in the Imperial Upgrade Stage, which happens after the Rebel Upgrade Stage.
But in the Forced Mission section, it says that when a Forced Mission is played, you skip the Rebel and Imperial Upgrade stages.
Can anyone clarify?
