tibia reacted to nathanielb in I don't understand the app hate
The forced nature of the app is the problem. Its not about providing players with options the way Descent does, its about limiting the experience. If you don't like apps, as I don't, tough luck. While the logistics are an issue, the big problem I have is that it breaks the immersion. I simply don't like the "feel" of it and can't get invested.
Many people say this. The problem is if there is another Lord of the Rings branded, RPG themed, Gloomhaven style board game out there I can't find it. The physical parts of the game look fantastic; too bad its just half a game.
There are no reasons to exclude apps but plenty of reasons not to force players to use apps. I won't labour the point as it has been argued to death in other forums but I will say that while apps make it easier for some people (not a criticism) there is nothing an app can do that a physical game can't if you can be bothered to develop the game mechanics.
I don't think that the market will in this case. Fantasy Flight has such a huge following that people will buy it simply because it is Fantasy Flight. Likewise Middle Earth remains very popular among gamers. The brands advertise themselves now and this game was always going to be a money spinner regardless of quality.
Stumbled on to it while searching for something else.

tibia reacted to Sorastro in Sorastro's Painting
Hello!
By popular request (and just because I wanted to!) I've begun a new painting series for The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle Earth, and I thought I'd share the first video here for anyone who might be interested:
I'm making the series as beginner-friendly as possible, and I really had fun taking a fast and loose approach with the first eighteen figures from the game (the Orcs, Goblins, and Ruffians). Here's a few pictures of what I've covered so far:
I hope some of you will join me for the painting journey!
Sorastro.

tibia reacted to johnyb in about Retreat & 3rd/4th Actions in monsters combat list
The rtl rules on retreat states that that the monsters goes as many spaces as possible from the closest hero when retreating . My question was about the rule of retreating in general. So my answer is not answered yet ... Is there an official answer ?

Not yet
Sorry, to keep you waiting but we really want to create a high quality expansion. We need to iterate a couple of things and playtest some more. Thanks for your patience.
P.S: Erik posted a second preview on the second hero and class included in SotP at BGG.

You guys! Well, I'm happy to let you know that I certainly will be covering The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth. Let the journey begin! 😃

@rugal, playing can simply mean "enjoying to play a game with your friends". Winning and/or losing is not necessary 🙂

tibia reacted to UnderSnail in Goblin problem: why travel?
Tibia, It's very simple to kill Ankaur Mato without traveling to the final location. I failed to read the requirement that he spawns at the final location, and improperly brought Mato out too early. Obviously this quest is more interesting than I thought, and I must replay it. Excellent.
Thanks!

tibia reacted to Sadgit in Sands of the Past - Preview #1
I am happy to announce Sands of the Past - an expansion for Descent: Journeys in the Dark 2nd edition. A couple of months ago, myself and several members of the community set out to develop a community expansion with roughly the content and (most importantly) the quality of a small box official expansion. Although some components of SotP are still at a play-testing stage, the new Road to Peril coop mode that will be included in SotP expansion has already sparked a thread on BGG. I therefore decided to share some details on SotP in a series of previews.
For details see my announcement post on BGG.

I quite like your idea. I am interested in more things to do with the map tiles. I had been thinking about making a deck of all the room tiles and monster cards for a sandbox dungeon type explorer too. Have you worked more on the idea?

> I'd suggest seeing if your favorite local game store can order it.
"We currently don't carry Lost Legends however we've noted this inquiry to track the number of customers interested to purchase this product. Hopefully we'll decide to get one in the future, we will update the website accordingly if that happens. "

I managed to enter my address and they ask 47,80 USD for shipping!!!!!!! This is the WORST news from FFG: publishing an expansion that everybody wants, but cannot afford because of shipping costs and they don't distribute it to Europe (or outside US) 😞 Asmodee destroyed FFG!!!!! I will never be able to get it 😞

That would obviously be the hope. If it is "really super fantastic", I'll be glad to pay the $100. If not, that will be a disappointment.... ??

tibia reacted to FrogTrigger in First impressions..
Got this game for Christmas and finally got around to playing some games with some friends this weekend. I originally played the first scenario multiple times to learn the game, then with three minds thinking together we worked the kinks out on our first play through as well. I believe I have a pretty good understanding of how the game plays at this point.
I never played Warhamemr Quest, and I am actually glad I didn't because from what I have read it seems people are trying to hard to compare the two games, or hold this game to that standard. This is Heroes of Terrinoth, a brand new game, full stop.
Overall I find the game mechanics are pretty fun, smooth and easy to learn. You are able to jump right in and immerse yourself in the quest. I like the fact that not every quest has to be linked in some giant over arching campaign. It makes for a great games night multiplayer co-op game that doesn't require a tonne of commitment. My group had it down in a few rounds of the first mission and off we went.
I find the overall quests to be pretty on par for FFG. Nothing overly dramatic or mind blowing, but just pretty steady generic fantasy, which is OK that is what I am looking for.
I did find the core to be a little limited in terms of choices for hero customization, especially if you plan to play with the same group through all 8 quests. But I understand FFG has an aggressive expansion model that has already got me on a few games. So I don't doubt the lack of customization or hero/class choices will last for very long.
I thought the supplied enemy/nemesis selection was great, with a lot of different choices to mix things up. The overall deck building setup is a really good system that allows for a lot of variation with limited choices. I am glad there is so much to choose from in the core as that means we can expect a lot of variation to continue through the expansions.
I'd give the game a solid 6.5/10, it's entertaining and fun. It exists in a decently written, while a little cartoony, established semi-traditional fantasy world. I do find it lacks a little bit of depth, which I know is by design, this isn't meant to be a full deck building game. I just felt like there could have been a bit more to the mechanics. Would very much recommend for any games group looking to try something a bit different.

I hope they will produce a lot of Terrinoth content before even think to Star Wars theme 🙂

tibia reacted to David Spangler in HoT engine for Star Wars
Wow! We've come a long way with this topic! 😁 All very interesting comments and discussions.
Thinking about Descent, Mansions of Madness, and Imperial Assault, I've played all of them with their apps, and the co-op feature these apps provide is one my family prefers. No one ever wants to play the Overlord or the Bad Guys or the Empire!
From a solo standpoint, though, it takes time and energy to run any of these games by myself even with the app. With HoT, however, the solo game is wonderful, quick, easy to set up and take down, etc. Just what I need these days. So my original post was really a desire for some kind of equivalent SW game that could be played solo with the same ease that HoT provides.

tibia got a reaction from Xelto in HoT engine for Star Wars
Mmm ... when was the last physical content for Descent 2.0 out? When do you expect the "missing" physical content that everybody is asking for to be out? When do you expect new developed physical content for Descent 2.0 to be out? The fact is that Descent 2.0 is a "dead" game (i.e. no new physical content for it will ever be out) and they are trying to sell the old physical content they have in the warehouse.
Luckily we will have HoT now (at least when I will get it 🙂 )
