Ahh ok. As I said scenario 6 was the most official ruling I had seen on the subject. Haven't actually read through any of the summer league stuff apart from the scenarios so far, as my group doesn't seem to want to play preset scenarios but are just interested in the standard game.

We have finally got to Scenerio 3 in the Arkham League and need a few things clarified
When fliers move in Dunwich to the sky, next turn do they move to the Black Cave Vortex or back up to the Dunwich vortex?
Do monsters stay on the Dunwich vortex just like the Black Cave vortex? Reason we are asking is the first time we played it we had Lure Monster spell and it wasn't spelled out if the Dunwich votex worked as it regularly does or if the monster sits on it for a turn like the Black Cave
I'm also interested in who people are choosing for their teams and whether anybody has come up with a "Dream Team" for the scenerios..We have chosen to use Wilson Richard, Daisy Walker, Mandy Thompson and Darrell Simmons and have only been able to put up scores in the low to mid-twenties but they have been able to stay alive through the first couple of scenerios...
Thanks in advance for you help....Happy monster hunting!
These are the answers as best I remember them:
1. Once a monster is in the sky, it counts as being in Arkham proper, which is most significant for the monster limit (counts all non-spawn monsters in Arkham, including sky, but doesn't count monsters in Dunwich) and, for the scenario, where it goes, which in this case is the Black Cave.
2. Well, first of all, the Black Cave isn't a vortex, though there is a resemblance in the scenario. Monsters moving into any vortex in Dunwich follow the normal rule, which is that they are consumed immediately upon entering. The main reason that monsters wait a turn in the Black Cave is to give the investigators a theoretical chance of killing them (especially fliers) before they're devoured by Tsathoggua. This would be irrelavent in Dunwich, since another standard rule is that investigators can never enter any vortex for any reason.
3. I'm sure that, if we wanted to look through all of the scenarios (9 out of 10 so far) and figure out the ideal set of 3 (for us) investigators to best beat all of the scenarios, we could. However, we basically picked our favorites/whoever appealed to us the most. A good rule of thumb, though, is probably to avoid the 3/7 and 7/3 investigators, since that one weakness will probably make them spend half their time in the asylum or hospital, respectively, in at least some of the scenarios.

As I recall it, the official ruling was that fixed starting equipment is still given to that investigator. So, if Wilson Richards is in, then he gets his shotgun before any are removed from the common items deck.
Also, I'm not sure how both crosses would be used up before Sister Mary got to them, unless she's replacing a devoured/retired investigator. In that case, I don't know what the technical/official rule would be on that.

Style of play affects time, though not in how one might suspect. For instance, when we were doing scenario 3 (vs. Tsathoggua), we lost 5 or 6 times, but we were able to play several times each night because, when we knew that we were about to lose, we just gave up and started over, in order to try to get more games in.
Also, once you get to know the encounters better, and especially know to look for the bold or italic text, you can go "blah blah make a will (-2) check or lose a sanity", if times is a concern. Me? I prefer to read the encounters in my horror narration voice. I'm also the designated mythos card drawer and reader (since it's not like it matters if the first player draws it, it's the same card), so it happens there, too, at least when time isn't a concern.
Time can also be saved by allocating different jobs during relevant phases. For instance, whoever's next to the AO (across from me) places the doom token when a new gate opens in the mythos phase, and grabs the seal during the arkham encounters phase if a seal is going up. I also do the math during a monster surge while the lucky guy (definitely not me) mixes up the monsters in the cup in preparation for drawing, and I call out the monster movement, then let someone else move the monsters while I look at the special text, discard the old environment if it's being replaced, etc. When we're playing casually (i.e., not league), we also tend to blend upkeep with the beginning of each investigator's movement, which speeds things up because we're not having lengthy discussions to get the best tactical option.
So, yeah, once you get familiar with the game, you'll get your own little quirks that speed things up, speeding you into the maw of Great Cthulhu.

OK, I seem to have gotten confused earlier and said "Skill" when I meant "Ally". I knew that it was one of those powerful hard-to-get small cards, though I did find it odd that it was one of those plus Spell, instead of "Skill or Ally", or one, or the other, or an anything. It just seems like an odd combination.
P.S.: I'll get back to the "search for items in decks" thread later this week.
-
Yeah, the "first" thing is a bit vague. Technically, even a single-check skill resolution has a "first" check (the first, last, and only one), but it would seem to imply the potential for multiple, which would then in turn imply drawing a monster from the cup. However, it's still unclear.
Well, since it's worth a Skill, I guess that we'll run it as drawing a monster from the cup until we get an official ruling.

OK guys here is the break down.
CoC used to be a CCG. Now it is a LCG.
The CCG cards are compatible with the LCG which is why they are still being sold. The backs are different to express a new direction the game is taking. If you really want to you can do like me and buy all of the older cards. If not, all you have to do is pick up asylum pack 5 and 6 and wait for Core to come out and play from that launch point. Every month will be a new asylum pack of 40 cards with 30 cards that are 3 offs and 10 cards that are one offs. So you have to buy 3 asylum pack to get 3 of every card.
Semi-Collectable if you wanna split hairs. But cheap enough to not break your wallet. An entire expansion for $30 compared to a booster box of CCG for about $120 and you are not guaranteed to get all the cards you need. Honestly the LCG format is the way to go.
So, asylum packs 5 and 6 are new-style cards? Of course, I don't feel like buying them until I get the core set.
Also, I'll probably not have to worry about competitive recentness, since I'll probably have to maintain 2+ decks and wait for one of my friends to get bored with Arkham Horror and Munchkin Cthulhu.

Amazingly, someone was actually available to play AH over the weekend, and we played with KiY, but there was one encounter that we encountered that seemed a bit odd:
Unvisited Isle
A monster is attacking a huddled figure in the shadows. If you pass the first Combat check you make against the monster, you may draw a random Ally or Spell.
So, does that mean that we draw a monster similar to "a monster appears", or is it more like the vampire encounter in rivertown, and this is implicitly a Combat (+0) check?

OK, apparantly, there's some kind of bug in the posting mechanism that makes it wrap around to the top after a while. So, I'm going to try something different, but it will require more time, so I won't be posting here until late tonight or sometime tomorrow. I'm just going to throw up a link to the thread on the regular forum until I can get this sorted out.

Subject: Search for items in decks?Arborshate
OK, I've done some searching here (as well as on BGG), and I haven't found an answer to this issue:
When one is directed to search a deck for an item (i.e., Holy Water in unique items deck, Research Materials in common items deck, first Tome in unique items deck, first Weapon in common items deck), what is the method?
Are cards drawn from the top, with incorrect cards discarded to the bottom?
Does one pick up the deck and look from the bottom up?
Does one shuffle the deck afterward (mainly relevant when Ashcan Pete is around)?
I'd appreciate something official, especially to make sure that my friends and I do the league correctly (and thank Nodens that we're not even at scenario 3 yet).Fri, 2008 Aug 15, 2:34 PM (CDT)

Top down is my preferred method. But I don't know if there's an 'official way' of doing it. I'll certainly check the rules/FAQs for it though.Fri, 2008 Aug 15, 2:52 PM (CDT)

I don't think there is anything official. This is one of the first questions I posted.
For the above items I look from the bottom up. We then shuffle the deck [edit] of the cards we've looked thrugh [/edit], but its been pointed out that there is actually no provision for shuffling the deck, but we do anyway.

When looking for the first or next [tome] we go from the top and put the next cards on the bottom.
Does one shuffle the deck afterward (mainly relevant when Ashcan Pete is around)?
This is why we asked the question too. At that time, Little Emily insisted on playing Ashcan pete all the time.
I'd appreciate something official, especially to make sure that my friends and I do the league correctly (and thank Nodens that we're not even at scenario 3 yet).

Alright, this is going to be harder than I thought. The way that these frame-like objects get pasted makes them hard to take out. So, it will be post-by-post text, I guess.
-
Hey, I never did get an official ruling on how that search thing is supposed to work. The shuffling issue hasn't mattered while my team has been in the league, since we don't have "Ashcan" Pete on the roster, but I'd still like to re-post my thread here to see if I can get that official answer, or maybe just stimulate some conversation. So, if things work out right, the next post here will be stuff copied from that thread.

Well, I hope that someone has an easy means to copy the old forums over and do that. Otherwise, it's a long, tedious task.
Also, perhaps they could make a subforum to serve as an archive from the regular forums to the new ones.

Well, jhaelen's quote thing seems messed up, but I just checked in another browser where I'm not logged in, and those links are indeed not links over there there, even though they are over there here. Yeah. So, apparantly, we have to be logged in to see the scenarios, which would be a good thing to display somewhere where not-logged-in people can see it.
-
I created an account here so that I could do something (I forget what right now), and after that the league links worked. Maybe it's a coincidence and I had a similar timeframe to fnord3125, but my bet is that having an account and being logged in turns the scenario texts into links to the PDFs.
Actually... OK, I was going to try that page in a different browser, where I'm not logged in, but I can't find that page anymore.
And now I can't find where to download the PDFs for scenarios 7-9. Great.

I'm not sure why they would still sell the old stuff, though I think that I read somewhere (before the site change, methinks) that starting with a certain product (forget which) the card backs and borders would change, so there's a clearer division. Fortunately, I didn't happen to find out about the game until after the LCG transition announcement, so I'm just waiting around for them to get that new starter whatsits out.
However, this new format does sound good. The reason that I got out of CCGs/TCGs was that they would break the bank if I wanted to stay competitive. Of course, of all the things, I'd think that the game themed around cosmic horror would be the one to stick with the CCG format.

RE: Newbie question
in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I noticed that the movement point system ended up being the simplest solution. It just steps through like this:
If your movement phase starts in an Other World, then you recieve no movement points. Otherwise, you recieve movement points equal to your current speed (including anything that modifies that, such as the Speed skill), plus any modifiers specific to movement points (Ruby of R'lyeh for +3, Inner Beast (King in Yellow expansion) for +1, some environments subtract a movement point). Then, you can spend your movement points on moving or on an item (mostly Tomes, but a few others, like Alien Statue), with the exception that, if you ever have combat (by failing an Evade check or choosing not to Evade), your remaining movement points are reduced to 0 and you must stop there.
However, I've sometimes puzzled over the Motorcycle and the Map of Arkham. So, I'll pose two relavent questions:
1. Since one must exhaust them to get their movement points, could one use them to read a Tome (etc.) after finishing combats in an area?
2. Since one must exhaust them in order to get their movement points, could one use them after leaving the second area of an Other World to read a Tome (etc.) (or, dare I say, to move)?
I generally play by the spirit of the rules and say that one cannot gain movement points after combat or starting in an Other World (or that one has, say, -64 movement points (just some large negative to prevent recovering above 0)). However, I haven't seen anything in the letter of the rules to say otherwise.
So, let's just mull over that for a bit.
