Several serious questions from a humble new player
MechSpike replied to MechSpike's topic in CoC General Discussion
Wow that's awesome...seems like a few weird happenings are going on here haha...the stars must be right! So is there a specific format the game uses? Like in Magic there are several formats where each can use a certain pool of cards. Is it the same in CoC? I have so many questions about the game, but I feel like I have no real site to go to for general information. Even this one is lacking some information.... -

Awesome, yeah I've been there once, but never have been back just because of the distance. So other than that store there is no other group of people that play in any other area around here? This is upsetting...does FFG not care? -

Wow yeah that's the exact store I was talking about...whoa they all went there? Do you guys play ever? I heard there is a steady group there that playtests? I would love to stop down sometime, I actually lve 45 minutes away from Butler, so Pittsburgh is about an hour drive from me, but I'd be willing to stop down to at least play with some pros or see how the game is played. Oh and btw I tried searching Magnus Arcanus and couldn't find anyone by that name on the board...am I perhaps looking in the wrong place? -

This is quite depressing and makes me quite sad to be honest. It makes me wonder if I even want to attempt to get into the game. I say we push to get this game bigger than it is. We need to gather a small fan base though to support it and protest to FFG. Doesn't this game still hold national tournaments etc? I just ordered the Starter Box and I hope this game doesn't turn out to just be a "table-top game" -
Alright, I apologize for the amount of questions and comments I'm about to bring forward, but I have just been thinking about all this for the past couple days. I really can't find any good sites with information about this game when it comes to anything. Sure, www.boss.sverok.net/index is a great site, but it's not even written for the LCG! It's years old, and it doesn't appear to be being updated. I wish there were more sites that had information on deck building, tournaments, formats (does this game even use formats?!) It seems like the "community" of this game, is literally only these forums. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I went to my local store today New Dimension Comics in Butler, PA, and not only did they not have the starter box, but the guy didn't even think the game was still in print. The store is two stories, and sells practically any other FFG product you can think of (even the obscure ones), but they don't carry CoC LCG? What is FFG doing to help get the game out there? The store owner said they used to have a play group back in 2007 (when it was still the CCG I assume) but now they don't have anyone there playing. This is just so frustrating to me because I am willing to give FFG my hard earned money, but I feel like they aren't doing anything to actually push the game to new players. I am even willing to buy this game even though the only place I know around here that actually has a play group is in Pittsburgh, where I believe Chris Long plays...I remember going to a card shop down there to buy Magic cards and I asked the guy about CoC LCG and he said he has the 2006 champion play there. (EDIT: Actually now looking at the champions from the past few years, they all seem to be from Pittsburgh or somewhere in PA so I don't recall who) Do they even have World Championships anymore?! But this is beside the point... Every card shop around here has Arkham Horror and all it's expansions, but not one product of CoC LCG. There are two shops I usually stop into, and I have never seen the CoC LCG in either of them. Why doesn't FFG try to push to get this into more card shops? It's not like the shops already carried them and they didn't sell (which is possible, but unlikely, since the LCG is fairly new still) and as I said, the shop I stopped into today said they haven't "seen" a Call of Cthulhu card game product in "years." I was just curious as to anyone else's thoughts... Once again, I apologize if I sound like I'm ranting, I know I am. I just get frustrated when my selection of card games to play is Magic, Pokemon, and YugiOh because of the lack of a player base for any other game.

Okay...now I posted the same question over in deck construction, but I didn't notice this thread until now. I plan on buying the starter box today, can anyone give me a list of good "starter" decks that I can make with just the starter box? Also, what Asylum packs would be good to get for starters? Is there any other way to play online? Lackey never seems to have anyone using the Cthulhu mod...
-
So I am buying the starter box today attempting to get into this game, even though really no one around here plays. I have a couple of questions. Is there anywhere I can look to find a list of a decent decks that can be built using just the starter box? Also, if I was to buy any asylum packs what ones should I buy if any? Is there a website where I can go to look a decklists for the meta game? I can't seem to find anything like this... I'm really looking to get into this, but it's really hard since the entire community seems pretty dormant.

Is a living card game collectible?
MechSpike replied to Luftwaffe Flak's topic in Call of Cthulhu LCG
Okay, but lets look at the big picture. Magic the gathering releases new sets every three months. Booster boxes are about $100-$120 depending on if it's a core set etc. So lets add up the money. For Call of Cthulhu you pay $30 a month and in 3 months that will be $90, which isn't too far off from what you'd be paying for Magic. Now granted, you wouldn't be getting the full set when buying a booster box, BUT with Magic you can buy single cards. I can't find anywhere that sells single Call of Cthulhu cards, which is a huge down fall in my eyes. I also would love to play, but no card stores around here sell the game, or have anyone who plays I can't even find any websites on it other than here and maybe one or two others. I wish I could find videos of other players playing the game, not just the tutorial video. -
So my friends and I decided to set up an epic game with every expansion on the table. We want it to be 8 investigators, and possibly Azathoth as the AO. What I need to know is exactly how to do this. Mixing in every card from every expansion seems silly to me because that's way too many cards and half the cards will not to see the light of day. What I've been doing is making 60 card decks for mythos/other world/common/unique etc etc all the decks pretty much. This way I get a good mix of everything and it's not too bulky. I was also thinking about taking mythos cards and possibly encounter cards and splitting them up so I'll have one of each expansion in a pile of 7 cards. Then take several of these piles of cards and shuffle them individually, then place them on top of each other to create a mythos deck. Therefore we will automatically get one of each expansion in a random order every 7 turns. Sure once we hit say turn 6 we will know what expansion to expect next, but even so that will hardly give us an upper hand since 4 of those expansions all open gates in Arkham. Any other suggestions for doing such a game? Usually when playing with more than one expansion you never run into any of the different features that go along with the expansions, let alone having all 7 in play. I'm sure some of you have done such an endeavor but what would be the best most compact way of doing this...

Innsmouth is driving me crazy...

Might I suggest buying it on the FFG website? That's what I did... -
The dreams and nightmares of Ashcan Pete
MechSpike replied to MechSpike's topic in Arkham Horror Second Edition
No, a bunch of us played over the forums last year. The game was brought to a halt when the guy running the game disappeared mysteriously But we all wrote out turns out in narrative form and I played Ashcan Pete. His personal story just reminded me of my story I wrote for him...he was plagued by nightmares and trying to find the source, and it was connected with a forgotten night in the woods from his past. I ended up reading his personal story once I got the expansion yesterday, which was really vague, but I just thought it was neat. -
The dreams and nightmares of Ashcan Pete
MechSpike replied to MechSpike's topic in Arkham Horror Second Edition
Please someone tell me I'm just going insane haha could anyone tell me what his personal story says? -
So I read that Ashcan Pete's personal story has to do with weird dreams he has? I don't want to toot my own horn, and it's probably just coincidence, but when me and a few other people on the forum here a while back played an online game of Arkham Horror I played Ashcan Pete. His story revolved around weird dreams/nightmares he had pointing to a strange event that happened in the woods involving a cult and a sacrifice. I'm not sure what exactly his personal story card says but I couldn't help but draw a connection. Was this just a coincidence?

Playing tonight, need some suggestions!
MechSpike replied to MechSpike's topic in Arkham Horror Second Edition
Well we are definitely going to use some expansion cause we really want to see what Black Goat is all about...I was thinking using one board and one card expansion or just two card expansions. Alright so Pharoah I guess would be out...KIY seems pretty fun. And I want to trim everything down first instead of just throwing cards out if they pop up. I guess what I'm wondering is, are there any specific combination of expansions you guys enjoy playing with? Like a specific two that go together well? -
Alright so I haven't played Arkham Horror in a while but me and a small group of friends used to play quite often. We are busting it back out tonight for a session and I'm bringing a noob friend. My problem is, I own all 5 expansions and I need to figure out a perfect combination of which ones to play. My friends and I haven't played KIY or BG yet and hardly have played Pharoah. So what is a good combination of expansions where things won't get too hectic for a noob but also add some spice to the game for us vets. Also, once the expansions are chosen what cards can I take out/leave in. For instance, if I run KH but not DH, do I leave in the Arkham encounters for DH? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sooo it's been forever but I'm posting one last time to see what you guys have been up to? Anyone?

Is everyone dead?

Great! Okay do we have anyone to take over as gamemaster?
-
Edited because I jumped to conclusions I agree we need to continue our old game. I'm very invested in my character. We all knew where we were going and we were getting very comfortable with the story. It won't be hard to find a replacement for NinjaDude and Starburn can take Sirprim's place...If anyone else doesn't want to continue I'm sure we could find another to fill in. I'm definitely with Bravo on this. My vote goes to continuing the game here.
