Oldster reacted to Shanturin in Fly Casual - does it still run?
Hi folks!   In recent months X-Wing in my country (Poland, that is) has saw an incredible surge of popularity. Game nights that hosted 8-10 players are now swarming with up to 30 people regularly, and new communites are popping up almost weekly. Mainly it's due to the new movie, the fall of GW systems in Poland* and incredible work done by a few people who dedicated themselves to promote the system. And while having more people to play with is awesome, there are some issues connected with it that are less... joyful.   There is a visible shift in mentality, as more nad more highly competitve, long-time players come to X-wing from other systems. As it grows, the community itself becomes more competitive, win-oriented as opposed to fun-oriented, thus also a little less friendly toward new or casual players. Of course, i'm exaggerating a bit, but better to be safe than sorry   Knowing and noticing this, while also sticking with X-wing from its begginings, I remeber the intiative back on these forums called "Fly Casual", advocated by Doug Kinney and others, promoting good sportsmanship and fun above all. Here comes my question: does anyone know any contact to people who ran that campaign? I wish to promote the same ideals here at my country. I know the part of the camping was printed t-shirts with it's logo and I'd like to ask for permission to use it - becouse frankly, shipping those t-shirts from across the ocean in not so large amounts would make them a bit pricey...   Anyway, do you see similar problems in your communities? How do you deal with them? Any advice or opinion is welcome!   Fly Casual!

I have both the base and Unseen Forces sleeved with a small plastic tackle box for all of the bits and that barely fits in the original box. GoA doesn't fit at all even in its own box with all of the cards in sleeves and the new one will have the same problem. Maybe FFG should just give us bigger boxes with the expansions so we can fit all of the sleeved cards inside them.

With the third small expansion coming soon and the original box already too cramped for everything, are there any plans to release a big box expansion so we can consolidate everything together? With Gates of Arkham I have no room to put any of the new cards in the game box that already contains the base plus Unseen Forces.

Oldster reacted to Mikael Hasselstein in Just curious, does anyone use TIE bombers?
I'm my local scene's 'bomber guy'.

I realize that they're not in favor with the global or my local meta. So, I like them in part because they allow me to be a bit of an individualist. Because I've gotten quite used to them, and I've tweaked what I do with them over time, I can say that I give as well as I get, and do pretty okay with them.

Regarding bomb payload, I am a big fan of Seismics and Prox Mines. Prox mines are better on Scimitars (because at PS 2 they move first, and if you can land the mine on a higher-PS target, it doesn't get to escape three red dice or evade them with green dice. TIE Phantom, I got your number right here!)

A really good thing about bombs? Your opponent will have the tendency to forget that you have them. There's something really satisfying about having a number of enemy ships in your baffles because your opponent thought he had outmaneuvered you in the previous turn. And then, you say. "Oh, before I move, I'm going to leave you this little present."

Regarding missile/torpedo ordnance, I agree that FFG made a mistake with the earlier missiles and torpedoes. However, I think that the newer ones are pretty good. Sure, Flechettes are not going to stress out Fat Han, but they're still going to give you a three-dice attack at R3, and if you spend the point on the Munitions Failsafes, you've got a pretty awesome little weapon for three points. Also, I do think that the Ion Pulse Missile is pretty good against Fat Han.

What has recently dawned on me is that a number of missiles and torpedoes don't require you to spend your target lock. You merely have to have a target lock. That's huge!

So, in sum: are they top-of-the-line for the global meta? No. But that doesn't mean that they're bad.

A lot of people are ignoring the fact that there are a lot of people that play this game that don't play epic because they don't like it, not because they haven't tried it. And there are a lot of reasons to not like epic, games take longer, it requires more table space, it requires you to own lots of ships from a single faction or own expensive huge ships, it has almost no tournament support at both the premiere level and the LGS level, and/or it focuses too much on capital ships and not enough on dogfighting. It's just as legitimate for someone to not like Epic play as it is for someone to not like tournament or 100 point play.

The thing that makes this worse than the C3PO/Tantive issue for a lot of people is that
    1. The TIE Advanced is one of most iconic imperial fighters after the TIE Fighter for casual fans that are not super deep into the EU(legends), because the TIE Advanced had a ton of screen time in the original film during the climactic battle.
    2. The makers of the game have publically stated on camera that the TIE Advanced as it was released is inadequate for tournament play that they are not okay with that and want to see the Advanced do well competitively.

I've also seen posts about people are only complaining because they don't have enough $$ in their pocket to afford the Raider. It's not about the Raider being too expensive, it's about not being able to buy something we want without also having to fund something we don't like. Yes X-Wing does that a lot already, but there's a big difference between paying an extra $10 to get that $5 upgrade you need, vs paying an extra $70 to be able to use the ships that you already own.

In the end, I think exploitative packaging like this is going to win out, there are just too many players that have to have whatever the new thing is and don't care if they are getting a bad deal.

Honestly, FFG could put out the X-Wing fix that they have said is coming in a box with a 10 lb rock, tell us it's an asteroid model that they painstakingly crafted that you can use to smash your opponent's ships only in casual play if you're opponent is okay with it, charge $150, and and enough people would buy 2 of them to make it a success.

The aftermarket has to this point failed to be a good solution for players. There's really not any money in it after the initial excitement of a wave wears off. 3PO normally sells for 40$ USD and is out of stock (as is R2 crew) at most sellers, which means Tantives aren't worth buying at 60 bucks at a discount even when you can sell a single piece of cardboard out of the box for 66% of that. So you've got a price point, 40 dollars, which some (not all) people will pay for 3PO at, but which is still too low to make it worth the effort of buying the Epic ship in the first place.

Some people will buy raiders to part them out, and if there are good crew cards for 100pt play to offset you'll probably see around 15-20 bucks + shipping for a 'set' of TIE X1 upgrades (1x title and targeter), which doubles the price of a single ship to correct FFG's design errors. Demand for epic ships up to this point has been low and shipping something as big as a raider is enough of a pain to offset any discounts so you would have to hope the other stuff is worth moving during the excitement of the new release to even see that. If the rest of the kit sucks or is mostly epic stuff then the already limited amount of resold Advanced upgrades will be even lower.

It is disingenuous to claim that you will be able to easily and affordably buy the cards online. At best, it's extremely optimistic in the face of previous epic ships telling you otherwise.

So, FFG fixed Avance. We were all waiting for this fix for a very long time and finaly it's here (or at least it will be). But why do we have to pay 99$ for it? I think it would be much better if we could buy upgrades for 100 points format with ships designed for 100 points games. Don't get me wrong, Epic is cool and it's good we have it but putting cards designed for standard play to a box with a 99$ price is a rip off.

I think discussions like this are where I am glad I never did the tournament scene.  When I had to analyze my points and abilities for "optimal" results, then the game became boring and felt like my current career.  My entertainment should not be my career.  EVER.  I see the arguments and sometimes vitriol that gets spewed from the domination of competitive players, and feel sad that THIS is the definition of fun.

I have one of every ship that was made...because I am a fan of Star Wars.  I can honestly say I have played (WHEN I have played) more with generics than the elite pilots.  I don't care what is or isn't broken to be honest.  I also haven't played in over three months.  I don't regret my decision.  When every discussion is tournament tournament tournament, then I clearly am playing the wrong game with the wrong community.  The worst part is that that mind set seems to be the only one out there.  People say "Fly Casual", but I sure as hell don't see it.

I’m surprised by number of replies in this topic. I have started it so I feel obliged to explain few things that in my opinion had some influence on the discussion.
First of all - the title. I’ve written it this way to bring your attention and I can see it worked. I didn’t want to insult anyone and if some of you felt insulted – My apology. It’s just that it can be very hard to bring someone attention on this forum because of so many interesting topics that appear almost every hour.
Second – the second hand market.  I’m not lucky enough to live in US or even North America. I live in Europe and it can be very hard to get single cards. Of course it is possible to get them by E-bay but the cost of those few cards is most often higher than 50% of a Tantive and that makes them (in my opinion) things I cannot afford. Buying expansions is the only way to obtain new stuff for me  and I guess I’m not the only person in such position.
Third - the question : Can we live without those few cards? The answer is as silly as obvious. Of course we can. The lack of TIEx1 won’t  destroy the rest of my collection. At this point the game is rich enough to play it without new additions for a very long time. My world will not collapse because I don’t have them. I think there is no need for explanation here.
Finally if I can share my opinion with you once more I’ll say I have plenty of games with FFG logo and I regard myself as a fan but I still think it would be better for us if new cards (especially those created to fix ships)for 100p games could be found in standard or Aces expansions.
And one more thing. This community is one of the best things that can be found on internet. I know this topic saw lots of emotions. We are all talking about our favorite game after all. There are players among us who will buy every single ship no matter the cost and there are players who have their limits. We all just want to play so pretty please let’s respect each other.  Fly casual. Drive friendly. Live long and prosper

And what makes you think I don't enjoy the game?

Here's the thing...  you don't know me.  You don't know how often I play X-wing.  You don't know how big my collection is.  You don't know that I taught my sister to play, and re-bought half my collection (probably still more than you own) so that I could leave her with a full variety to play with when I moved.  You don't know how often I run events.  You don't know that I eBay game night kit stuff for myself so that what the store has I can give away.  You don't know how much money I've spent on everything from custom cards to game night kit stuff to promo cards from Nationals and Worlds to give as prizes.  You don't know the mileage I've put in driving to cons to demo, or how many mats I own so we can be sure to have good play surfaces for events.

Are my comments negative?  I think of them as honest, personally.  And you haven't really seen the negative parts, like how I feel about turrets...  Most of what we've been discussing here (game design wise) is pretty objectively true.  Now, maybe you can't imagine enjoying a game unless you ignore all those problem points.  That's up to you, but I do just fine.

So your little bit of armchair psychoanalysis isn't welcome, and it's so far off base you're trying to steal third from Antarctica.  AT BEST, it's based on well-intentioned ignorance.  We'll be generous here and assume that's it.  And if it is, you need to take a step back and ask yourself if a half dozen posts is really enough to justify deciding that I actually have some deep-seated subconscious hate for the game, and how appropriate it is for you to be opining on what my real enjoyment level of the game is.  Because you really, truly, and completely do not know me.  So keep it to yourself.

I'm sorry you think it's impossible to analyze the game, and point out its flaws, without hating it.  I happen to like the game quite a bit.  But that doesn't mean that making Biggs cheaper than Garven was good design.  It doesn't mean that the game hasn't spent two years recovering from the overwhelming pain of the PS tax putting most unique pilots in the box forever.  It doesn't mean the rules, which barely include timing despite a CCG-like ability structure, are well-designed.  And it doesn't excuse FFG increasingly pushing the limits of putting highly desirable game components in increasingly expensive boxes.

Believe it or not, it is possible to still enjoy the game despite those issues, and I do.  If you can't see how that's possible, then I feel for you, but please at least try and do better than "Classic Internet Flame #17".  You could, perhaps, explain why not having any point value for ability is a good design choice?  Or dispute that the PS tax has severely impacted the usefulness of unique pilots?  Or explain how the rules really do adequately cover timing despite the pain they've caused us rulemongers for the past two years?  Nah.  "I don't like what you say so just leave!" is so much easier, isn't it?

Well, let's consider why that might be:

    1.  People have largely accepted the process of buying ships they don't want in order to get upgrades they do.
    2.  A $20 vs. $100 price tag is a big difference
    3.  People who don't play epic see zero value in the Raider, while most players of the standard game see potential use for the Star Viper.

I think it's a different enough situation that the different reactions are pretty reasonable.

That said, I suspect you're going to see more discontent with this due to the third (and any additional) faction split.  X-wing's distribution model forces people into buying both sides.  I think that's going to become less tolerated as Scum splits to a faction a lot of players don't recognize or want.

Oh, give me a break.  Seriously... you consider "rip off" to be so beyond the pale that it instantly kills any possibility of reasonable discourse?

So if you tried for just a moment to put yourself in the shoes of someone who never played epic and didn't want to buy the epic ships, but very much wanted to make use of the fix to the TIE Advanced and were facing the prospect of buying a $100 ship they didn't want to get it...  what would you call it?  Really.  Pretend for just a moment that you don't like this, and suggest some of the wide range of words you'd consider acceptable for expressing that concern without resorting to such unforgivable insults as "gouging".

And the second point is simply ludicrous.  Bundling has been a standard corporate tactic for a long time now, and it's one which most consumer advocates cite as deeply unfriendly.  Cable TV has been the worst offender for a while, and gets the attention for it, but this is the same issue.  Just like with cable, unbundling a package would not hurt you in any way - you'd still get A and B just like you want.  Some people only want B, though.  Why are you so on board with them having to buy A as well?

FFG themselves know that bundling is at least perceived as evil - the entire pitch with the move to LCGs was an effort to reduce the bundling which comes from random packaging.  They've gotten very good at maximizing the reality of bundling while minimizing the perception of it, but they at least make a nod towards reducing it.  And, in fairness, have reduced bundling from CCG levels, which were downright obscene.

So... you do realize that there's not actually any additional value in there for you, right?  That you're paying exactly the same for that ship and cards as you would if they were in some other package that didn't include an $85 ship that a lot of people don't want?  It's not like they said "Hey, we need to package this Raider at $100.  So, that's set.  But wait!  Let's add another ship and a bunch of cards to fix it...  Great idea, Bob!  But wait, we can't change the price...  That's fine, just put them in there for free, our customers will appreciate the added value!"

Value is essentially benefit divided by cost.  Which is precisely the point here - you're getting the exact same value by buying them both as you would if they were separate.  But people who don't play Epic are getting far LESS value, because the benefit is lower for exactly the same cost.  When you consider that the value we're discussing is basically the repair of a ship which was already purchased but proved pretty useless, the value proposition gets worse.

Nobody's a socialist.  Nobody expects to get it for free.  What they expect is a reasonable value in the product, which is (despite the twisted "Anything corporations do is good capitalism!" memes) exactly what consumers in a capitalistic system are supposed to do.

You have missed the point again: price is only a part of it insofar as £70 is the only way to get these cards. The point isn't that the Raider costs a lot of money, it's that I have no interest in buying it to get them. I'm not sure how I can make that clearer and I really don't want to have to labour the point. There is nothing self entitled about it at all and I'm afraid if you choose to read attitudes or draw conclusions of your own from what I have said then that is entirely on you. FFG has announced this product and I am expressing how I feel about it as a player-unfriendly decision.

Can we stop it with all the mock threads?

Someone brings up a issue / problem that they have with the game. Maybe a POV that certain pieces are a little too strong when compared with others. Or maybe some issues tackling a specific combination. Or maybe some concern regarding future releases. Instead of looking at the issue, having a healthy discussion, addressing the OP's concerns and whatnot, we go about bashing him, making fun of his opinion, and mock him with parody threads.

I really do not think this is healthy forum behaviour, and I do not think we should stoop so low as to resort to these childish antics in the name of entertainment. If anything, these sort of behaviour only further discourages constructive discussion and prevents us from moving beyond the current commonplace complaints about the game

And I can bet there will be at least 2 other threads created with similar titles and whatnot  to this thread, except with some nouns and verbs switched out for other random words, because nobody would give a ****

Rapture nailed it. There is really no way any of us can know how this would change Fantasy Flight's bottom line.

The Raider comes with TIE advanced titles. TIE Defender comes with Predator. Cards are included with ships.
    Because of this,
    1) There are some people who will see this, and buy an extra ship to get the card.
    2) There are some people who will see this, and not buy the ship at all.
    3) There are probably some people who hear about this sort of thing, and decide they don't want to play the game at all.

The trick is how many people there are in each group. Obviously there are not enough in #3 to make X-Wing unpopular.    How many people are in #1? How many in group #2? Do they make enough from #1 to overcome losses from #2 (and #3)? I don't know. And neither do you.

The interesting question here is, what happens if you add a card pack of some kind?
    1) Some people will buy an extra ship to get the card.
1.5) Some people will not buy an extra ship, but will buy a card pack.
    2) Some people will not buy anything.

It's interesting because some people who were in #1 or #2 will shift groups to #1.5. Obviously sliding down from 1 represents a loss in profit (probably, although it depends on the relative margins of each product). But of course, selling a card pack to someone who would otherwise buy nothing is a Good Thing. Would you sell enough of those cards packs to make up for selling fewer ships? I don't know. And neither do you.

I feel like there ought to be some way for them to make it work, though. Maybe it's making individual single cards available from the POD shop on the website for $2-3 each. Maybe it's collecting all the cards into "Wave # Collections" that sell for $10-15. I don't know. All I know is that, as a customer, it would be nice to have more choices. I don't see what's wrong with that.

People need to step away from their computers for a minute and take a look in the mirror. This forum really isn't the place for trading ridiculous conclusion.

Is selling individual cards possible? Of course. FFG sells cards all of the time.

Would selling individual cards help or hurt their income? Who knows? A lot of people would be more willing to spend $5 as opposed to $75+ to trounce their friends with a C3P0 card, but whether the quantity of purchases would offset the lower price is really just a guess.

The OP really shouldn't ask what FFG 'should' do (at least not to this crowd), but what we want FFG to do. From a customer's perspective, the answer is pretty obvious. A larger variety of products means better access to what we want, so separate cards are great. Whether that makes business sense is up to FFG. Seeing as how they don't sell separate cards, we can assume that it arrived at the conclusion that either it would be less profitable or the reward doesn't justify the risk.

FFG selling card with ships is not anti-poor or directed to hurt anyone. That is crazy. It is just the safest, easiest, or most profitable way to do it in the eyes of FFG's management.
