  1. (Optionally) ignoring a retreat flag is a side effect of being bold but not a prerequisite for a battle back.

A defending unit has to fulfill two requirements to be entitled a battle back:

    • the unit has to be bold for whatever reason (inherent, support, landmark, lore card, ...)
    • the unit has not moved from the hex it occupied at the start of this particular battle.

  2. About the troll question:

I second your answer. The troll is not treated like the "usual" creature, for it takes banner hits like a common unit. Since all units (creatures included) suffer "hits" from hexes they cannot retreat, the same should be valid for the troll, shouldn´t it? While the others reroll the hits to check for criticals, the troll simply loses life points for each hit.

The golden rule "if it isn´t explicitely stated otherwise, the standard rules apply." is still true in this case.

I would rather wait for FFG´s take on rule questions, before adding the troll to the Creature Compendium. Will there be an official rules lawyer (like Eric was at DOW)? Will Richard be the one to answer questions here in the forums?

It shouldn´t be the fans´ responsibility to gather open rules questions and get them officially answered. If FFG decides to open a rules thread or sets up a similar tool (like the DOW online compendia) and starts answering the questions, we would happily expand the Compendia to include more questions.

  3. And the answer is: the effect is cancelled.

The last in first out rule does not apply here, because both cards target the same game aspect (attack dice). In this case the effects simply stack and are numerically added. Your example: +1 from "Mass Might" is being countered by the -1 from "Blinding Light", giving a net modifier of 0.

  4. Hi Todd,

the german community has no idea about when any official stuff will be published. However, the german fan-created FAQ will be published within the next one or two weeks. It (hopefully) contains all questions from the original DOW- forum (english and german sections) and the corresponding answers. Richard helped us answering the few remaining questions that were left open in the forum. SirWillibald did a tremendous job with the design of this new compendium and it blends well into the existing Lore Cards and Creature Compendia. Unfortunately we cannot promise a release date for an english version yet, since it was one hellish job to create the german version.

    Regards,

DarkPadawan on behalf of the german community (still found on www.worldofbattlelore.de)

PS: the Lore Cards and Creature Compendia (english and german) will be updated as well to include the new stuff from the FAQ project.

  5. I am not quite sure about your idea behind. Deployment cards and specialists are used in separate phases of the game. As soon as you shuffle them together and deal to the players, you cannot be sure, if both receive enough deployment cards to field an army.

What if one player gets just deployment cards and the other one specialists and only two deployment cards?

True, you get randomness, but for the sacrifice of game balance. If you are looking for variance, try one of Richard Borgs variants, found here: http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/msg/?goto=123231#msg_123231

  6. Hello Roxas,

may I offer help from the german community?

1.) UniversalHead from www.battleloremaster.com and myself maintained graphically pimped PDF- versions of the famous online compendia for Lore Cards and Creatures on the DoW BL- page. This is something you could find useful.

You can get the files here: www.battleloremaster.com/guild_downloads.html. I am willing to take up the work again, if FFG will put up a online-or-whatever-type-of platform for questions and official answers for those two parts.

2.) Funny that you mention a comprehensive FAQ. SirWillibald and myself had the same idea some months ago. We started to scavenge the german DoW forum for already answered and open questions. Together with a bunch of german speaking fans from Germany, Switzerland and Austria we extracted the essence from many, many sometimes long and twisted forum threads. SirWillibald and I spent some amount of time to bring the entries into a presentable Q and A form.

Currently, the text is proof read, polished and open questions collected to be sent to R. Borg himself (after getting his permission to do so). The next phase would be to start the graphical part / layouting. We were also planning to look through the english DoW forum to further expand the FAQ... when you kicked in with that announcement.

What we could offer is this: We add any missing Q&As from the english DoW forum, finish the text editing, translate the whole stuff to english and send you the package. FFG is doing the graphical stuff and, tataaaaa, you have a BL FAQ.... if this is something FFG could agree to.

Best regards from the german community @ www.worldofbattlelore.de

  7. I am not too worried about BLs future.

FFG would be a fool to let an open system like BattleLore jump from their hook. If they mange to restart the hype like DoW did in the old days, they will have a cashcow. Just imagine all the already published expansions only waiting to be sold. FFG only needs to build up some momentum to buy in new customers for the game and can start selling away the existing material without any more efforts from their side.

The only problem now is the silence around BL. There are just too many games in the FFG portfolio and too many new coming up. BL is now just one of many. When I load the front page, my attention is suddenly spread among all the new info presented there. If I were FFG, I'd start a massive information campaign on their site, showing all the features, expansions, units etc. of BL. This would help to grasp the attention of new customers to the system. This and the new expansions will help to bring BL to the glory it deserves (well, I can't be objective after all gran_risa.gif).

  8. After having read the online rulebook, I had the possibility to play a  game at the Vienna Gamefair last weekend and was not disappointed.

I just love the cooperative aspect in games, so I was easyly convinced into buying the game straight away. I can't wait to bring it to my gaming group.

PS: another most interesting game I can recomment to buy is "Space Alert" by Czech Games (http://www.czechgames.com/) which I could also test. It is very untypical and more than just a game. It is also played cooperatively and includes team-based decision taking within a time-restrained environment. I would call it a team-building tool.
