The Second Great Ritual of Voting: This Time, It's Personal

avec said: Nope. If he defaults, the only consequence is that he can't take out a second loan. And your game score is one less for a defaulted or unpaid loan. The way the loan card reads, he can just not pay. He doesn't have to be out of money. Really really cheesy. Or maybe it's the intention (I kind of think it is). He's a bootlegger after all. "Upkeep: Roll a die. On a 1-3, pay $1 or discard all of your items along with this card..."

Now that Vincent is "officially" the least popular investigator. The first one voted off the island. I'd like to get some suggestions on how to make him more popular. The simpler the better, but don't let that stop you. Also, keep in mind his personal story (or write a new one) if that's how you fix him.

Data in my post should always be accurate, and I'll say whose vote was the last one I counted as well. Last other vote counted: Cim. Unfortunately, Jedit, your data is inaccurate as of your second vote. You may have negated Mariana's vote (for violation of the 24-hour rule) but you based your corrections of Cim's first vote off of Dam's repost which DID included Mariana's vote. Right around there is when things went screwy and have carried forward to now. I implore you to double-check your spreadsheet. By my count, Harvey and Lily are wrong (somehow you magically granted Harvey +2 votes during your post), and Daisy is still in this. Can we vote yet? I hope I get the chance to take down Daisy if she reincarnates. (Actually I wish Patrice had gone out before her). -

I'm Joe diamond and have a speed of 6, I started with the motorcycle and just drew the ruby of Ry'Leh! That's awesome, I get like 11 movement a round!" while we have two other characters limping along with a speed of 3. And unless we offer a decent trade, Joe will not give up his movement boosters to the slower characters. We usually lose. I could see Patrice not giving up a single clue token over the course of a game. Emily had SO MANY clues when she played Patrice, even she shared. It was a breakthrough moment.

She's just completely and totally worthless - debatably for me the most worthless character in the game. She's one of my favorites. I don't think you yet appreciate the value of high speed and sneak. And she can fight too. Her special ability doesn't usually come into play, I'll grant you that. But her stat design is really nice. And if her scholarship retainer holds, she can buy what else she needs.

mattherobot said: It still bugs me that a Librarian is a better spellcaster than a Professor, a Magician, or a Witch, though. The story rationale, in particular, seems a little weak. Spells are actually from books so that have probably found their way to the library. Still, I agree, until the PS came along she was the only one that figured that out. Dexter is a stage Magician. And a professor is a professor (with a strong mind). Not necessarily wizards. Apparently not only can the professor only cast a few spells per game, his real strength is taking a tommy gun in hand and blowing normally sanity blowing monsters away. In other words, he's miscast. It shouldn't have taken much playtesting to see the imbalances in Daisy and Patrice. So it almost makes me think its deliberate, to give groups a chance to win once in awhile. What irriates me even more is the weaker characters--espcially Vincent. He should be much more significant based on his own personal story and his PS didn't really fix him much. His counterpart, Carolyn, is really quite cool. She was the best magic caster in the base game and didn't even start with a spell. Also, I'd like to know how the politician actually works. Other items that show a lack of playtesting are the Rare book collection and Velma's Gratitude. I can't get players to do them when they're free.

Patrice: Too broken a character to use?
mageith replied to Solan's topic in Arkham Horror Second Edition
Gott said: Yeah, she's **** broken- even more than Daisy Walker the Librarian. We ruled noth of them so that their player MUST choose only ONE of their special abilities: that seems to fix them well. Think about it Better but not enough. As a gamer, For Patrice I'd choose generating the 20 or so clues. I tried that rule only and generated more clues that I could use in the game (since I couldn't share) and still sealed 3 gates. For Daisy, the free sanity for every spell and chosing her spell is more than powerful enough. In addition, the two powers not used are the most creative powers. It's very characterful if daisy reads tomes with a bonus. She's the librarian, after all. And for Patrice any character can gather clues but she's the only one that can share them. Perhaps allowing only use one power per turn or choosing randomly, which one, perhaps each turn. -
Patrice: Too broken a character to use?
mageith replied to Solan's topic in Arkham Horror Second Edition
Argonel said: Our local group agrees that as written Patrice is too powerful and leeches a lot fo challenge and fun from the game. At the moment we are mostly avoiding playing her, but we have discussed some options to reduce her power a bit. Our main thoughts are that for her personal story she must draw and keep 2 unique items either from an encounter or by buying stuff at the curoasity shoppe. The other main thought is that she may only pay one clue token per investigator per turn. I am a little nervous that this may make her a little underpowered, but I can't think of any other ways to dial her back a bit and still keep it "fair" and fun for everyone. Tonight I played her only being able to share her clues in the same town and she could achieve her personal story (but didn't). She didn't generate any clues at all. Played with a Brainy Bunch: Sister, Dexter (story achieved) and Carolyn (story achieved). It was the easiest game of Innsmouth I ever played. Patrice didn't seal any gates but helped Sister seal one and Dexter seal one. Sister will be first citizen. Innsmouth was quieter than ever. It was the first time the Deep One track didn't even threaten. I think being able to share her clues, without even generating any (except through her story), is as powerful or even more powerful than Joe Diamond's skill, who's not a bad investigator. -
Patrice: Too broken a character to use?
mageith replied to Solan's topic in Arkham Horror Second Edition
Solan said: And people thought MANDY was unbalanced! She's a piker next to the great Clue Mother. We've had six games with Patrice now and each time we've achieved a six seal victory, even against Rhan-Tegoth. Having observed Patrice over these six games my opinion is that her power is simply too great, too much. Mandy, Wendy and Jaxqueline all provide great advantages, it is true, but Patrice is a level beyond, a difference in degree so great that it becomes a difference in kind. If she is used correctly, the other Investigators almost don't have to worry about ever gathering Clues; they can simply jump in the nearest gate, confident that they'll have the Clues to seal when they emerge. Patrice's presence removes much of the challenge from the game and in doing so makes it considerably less fun. I'm arguing with my group that we should remove Patrice permamently and I am curious to hear what others in the Arkham community think about this issue. What are your thoughts and experiences concering Patrice? Do you also find her simply too unbalancing or not, and if not, why not? I wish I knew what FFG was thinking when they created Patrice. I've used her three times and the last two with her power reduced. 1) She could only share her closes with investigators in the same town. That was fun as she had to scurry between Innsmouth and Arkham and Emily still was able to seal gates with her (3 player game) 2) We reduced her futher to only being able to share 1 clue per turn with investigators in the same town and made sure they she had to draw and keep the Unique items. It wasn't enough. She still dominated. Her clue generation alone makes her outlandish. -
Mariana the Ex-Nun Cultist said: I'd agree that using a special ability is not an encounter. I'm pretty sure it specifically doesn't count on rift duty. ... - Mariana the ex-nun cultist I'm pretty sure those count as encounters. Kevin answered that a while back, though it doesn't appear to have landed in his official answers. I remember because I argued that the English was pretty clear that an "instead of an encounter" shouldn't be an encounter. He said it was. I hoped to be proved wrong. If no one else remembers this, that's OK too. IIRC he went so far as so say Wilson's special ability also counts as an encounter. Also, I can't find where Kingsport "specifically" outlaws special encounters. I too wish the special ability was in addition to a normal encounter. However I have played it that way, the game is much harder and much longer. I guess you could always play Ursula if you wanted more encounters.

Is it just me or is finn edwards amazing?
mageith replied to leesilver123's topic in Arkham Horror Second Edition
In olden days, the interest was often charged up front. http://www.businessfinance.com/discount-loan.htm The interest on an Arkham loan, assuming each turn is a day is 150% ($15 dollars interest on a $10 dollar loan) per month. I think the Sheldon gang owns the bank. Over a year's time that's $180. I'm surprised everyone doesn't default! Again, not so long ago, a financial year only had 360 days. -
LinkN said: In 7-8 player games, we tend to have one person camping between the newspaper (several cash encounters, as well as a few that give a retainer) and the curiositie shop hunting for useful UIs (elder signs, magic weapons, tomes, etc). Usually works pretty good. Another reason I add a monster on opening gates for every "counts as investigator" over 5. Idle hands are the devil's workshop.
