allenkwest reacted to Cotgrave in Delayed Release to Q3 2021
All FFG forums shutting down on Feb 1st. Just another coincidence? It seems like one closing announcement after another.

I care, is it OK with you all if I'm excited to see more?

🤨
Going to be interesting to see how this pans out.

How, among all of the numerous things about this game that you can complain about, is gender your complaint??? There's been female characters in Terrinoth games since forever, also representation (when done well) can be a plus.

allenkwest reacted to t4leswapper in Art?
I've met people who were really turned off by Bakshi before. Some people really didn't care for Wizards or his LotR. There's no accounting for taste. Of course, it is useful to be able to evaluate things dispassionately and at least recognize skill and expertise in art even when it isn't to one's personal tastes. A lot of people have great deal of difficulty with this, however. It can help to have been exposed to art criticism before. But not everyone takes that sort of class in school.
So you often get people reacting to art that they dislike as though it is poor art- confusing personal taste with quality. It happens all over, not just when people see new boardgame art.

It does look like Bakshi! I knew there was some influence for this art kicking around in my brain somewhere but I couldn't place it. I actually really love the character design and character art. I understand people's disappointment in the tiles, but the character art is so evocative. People who aren't as familiar with that style of fantasy art from the 70's and early 80's are probably missing the antecedents of this newer art. But I'll be damned if it doesn't bring me right back to those fantasy roots.

allenkwest reacted to Cotgrave in Art?
That was my first thought as well when I first saw it; Wizards.
That said, give the Elf a break - he lost his whole family!
(I am looking at this all now as a Descent Graphic novel you can play - more interested to hear more of the story/campaign and more mechanics at this point)

allenkwest reacted to HisEpicness in We need to be a Dungeons Master (Overlord)
100% disagree. I love fully coop games and app based games I have no gripes with. Still not sure I'll even get the game since its so expensive, but I am glad there's no overlord.
If you want an overlord, go play second edition.

allenkwest reacted to Ryan Shrieves in Art?
I like it; reminds me of styles used in the 70s-80s such as the film “Wizards”. Art definitely is subjective though, and anything not in a modern, mainstream style can take getting used to. ‘Too Many Bones’ has a rather polarizing art style but seems to have found it’s audience.

allenkwest reacted to Watercolour Dragon in New Descent, we'll know more on the 22nd!
Hmm it says 'not available' which may give some hope to people wanting to complete/ add to second edition as 'not available' matches some of that product line's statuses.

$174.95 (£133.63 currently) is quite ouch but it does have the 40 better quality minis in the box, I'm really trying to not veer into negative comment territory but I initially thought that's a getting everything right price more than an a few things falling a little short price, but from the FFG news item I feel it falls less short than first impressions and also then I did some math on the price and it started to seem more acceptable, the artwork is actually still growing on me and the app sounds like it could be very good and quite a step up from RTL which is already strong. I DO like the 3d nature of the terrain and how the game sounds as a different experience to 'journeys'.
Price-wise after you get over the big number shock it's actually pretty reasonable for what's in the box, if you just count the minis that's £3.34 each and individual minis are often around the £4.99 mark just for the smaller ones going on local pricing (remember 2e just gave us cardboard for some enemies unless you purchased the lieutenant packs)
2e has 39 @ UK £61.07 so £1.56 per mini, hmm, more than doubled up on the price but then 2e even the same would probably be priced quite a bit higher if it were a new release.
It's actually good not to have the '3rd edition of everything so do you replace your 2e kit dilemma' as trust me that would be so expensive I likely wouldn't, and whilst it's sort of not compatible it may give a few options for my 2e projects - it's nice to have the new characters and new enemies, as well as some variants of old ones, but mostly new so it's not just an upgrade and I reckon will be quite fun to explore alongside the other games.
Yeah, so mixed feelings, and I think I like 2e more overall, but can still see this joining my collection on a 'different game' basis

allenkwest reacted to Bucho in Hmm. Yay?
Yeah...I can see how you'd get kicked out with that opinion.
-
allenkwest reacted to Gregor Eisenhorn in Hmm. Yay?
Different games for different folks. While it is expensive for what it is, some of my best gaming experiences have been with the app-driven Mansions of Madness 2e.
-
allenkwest reacted to Gregor Eisenhorn in Hmm. Yay?
Yeah, definitely looking forward to this. My only reservation is that it may be a bit to similar to Journeys in Middle Earth, but I'm optimistic.
Artwork: I'm indifferent. As someone who remembers how much hate 2nd edition received for its artwork when it first came, people hating this artwork is to be expected. For the record, I was never a fan of the previous editions art either so this is a moot point personally. No overlord. As someone who is a forever GM, I like this. There are other dungeon crawler games out there and I've always personally preferred the pure coop ones. If you want a GM, Genesys and it's Terrinoth expansion can do a far better job than an overlord player in a restrictive boardgame. App-driven- yup, this is a thing these days and its fine. Should all board games have apps? **** no! But app-driven games are now a legitimate sub-genre of the hobby. For people concerned about app life span: If the game is popular enough, someone will find a way to keep the app working. I mean, I can still play my Star Wars VHS board game if I want as the video it requires is on the Internet. I don't however, because games have moved on and it's a very dated design. This game will either be successful, and will get future editions which update its design (or people will find ways of supporting the app as we have precedent for), or this game will fail and will simply take up space on peoples' shelves until they get rid of it: another thing well within the realms of normality.
I can understand why some fans of 2e may be disappointed because this is different. I feel your pain, Arkham Horror 3rd edition was a big letdown for me compared to previous games (such as Eldritch Horror), but back then, like now, all it was, was a duff boardgame in a time of many wonderful boardgames that scratch similar itches. The sky is not falling! Let's see what happens

allenkwest reacted to twincast in Hmm. Yay?
Huh?! (Regarding both statements.) I don't really have a mental image of the first round of Terrinoth games, but the second round (Descent 1e etc.) looks like fairly standard, slightly cartoony pre-WoW fantasy (it launched at around the same time), the third round (Descent 2 etc.) looks like fairly standard, extremely cartoony WoW-era fantasy (and absolutely nothing like any official iteration of The Lord of the Rings), and this new game looks like fairly standard, slightly cartoony post-WoW fantasy (namely D&D5e). I don't understand why people are so obsessed with whether something looks "mainstream" instead of judging something by whatever aesthetic factors they personally deem relevant regardless of their general popularity.
And just for the record, at its core Terrinoth always has been and always will be what is (disparagingly) called "generic Tolkien-esque pseudo-European fantasy", but almost all of those generic elements have fairly unusual to outright unique parts in their lore, some of which (like mounts) visible on pictures/miniatures. None of this has much at all to do with art style.

How many people are typing these laments on smartphones, laptops, tablets, or PCs that will cost them several times more than this game, that they plan on having for a shorter time than this game than this game will be functional? Value is subjective.
I need hyperbole in my life more than I need oxygen, water, or calories, and even I think you're going just a tad overboard.
This is what we're coming from...
Surely a lawsuit from shutterstock is imminent?????
This is where I'm coming from, too. Descent 1st and 2nd ed art is very much of its era, this game has art that's very much of its own.
-
allenkwest reacted to Swordbreaker in Hmm. Yay?
As someone who has no horse in this race and has very little emotional attachment to the Terrinoth universe, the art they've used for their products prior to this point (such as in the Genesys book) strikes me as incredibly generic fantasy art. Not artistically bad (the artists they contract all [mostly] do excellent work), but the designs and imagery is very bland, as in, it could be from something from Lord of the Rings or maybe Warcraft or maybe Dungeons and Dragons or maybe something else.
It just seems like, with this new style, someone is trying to give Terrinoth a newer, more identifiable style, for better or worse.

allenkwest reacted to Crowmaster in Hmm. Yay?
The art style is amazing, its difrent but amazing in my opinion. Card layouts, app etc all look very coherently.
I played LOTR:JiME couple of times and had a blast, app gives some immersion and its just evolution of boardgames. Not for every game but in game like that, dungeoncrawlers? It fits IMO.
Minis are very nice, tiles probably will look better in real life.
For me its a good succesor and step forward. Wish i had more time to play games

I think the art looks really good. The figures are also really nicely sculpted, and I'm excited to paint them. I don't mind the app, it likely replaces about 50 decks of cards and about 100 different tokens. The price point looks accurate and I'm ok with it. Also the UNDO button in the app is worth at least $40-$50.

FFG Fans: BOO, FFG recycles uses art too much!
Also FFG Fans: BOO, new art!
Aside from that there’s just no chance there was going to be an Overlord in this game. FFG hasn’t really used that model since Imperial Assault and it’s just not in the zeitgeist right now.

They must read this!! They have to listen to the audience!! Is important. Do not buy this... and will see... Im stil waiting for Heroes of Terrinoth content... More of Runebound 3rd... and more

I posted this in another thread just before I saw thread. I'm just going to copy and paste because I honestly I'm just too lazy to type it again. Lol.
......
So far I like what I see. Considering what I've spent to own every single component for D2e, MoM and JiME, not to mention painting/basing supplies, the price tag is not an issue for me. I see so many "So this game is dead?" threads... I for one don't mind ponying up to support a new product.
It looks like LotD hero depictions allow for improved inclusion, giving this game greater appeal to a wide range of gamers and current non-gamers alike. I can imagine many people identifying on some level with the hero that they have chosen to play in LotD. The more people that we are able to get on board with a new game, hopefully the greater support it will have in the coming years. IDK... maybe I'm just seeing things that aren't there. Either way, I'm really looking forward to a new experience. 🙂

The game seems like it’ll look really rad on the tabletop. Between Gloomhaven, Frosthaven, and 7th Continent I dunno that I’ll have practical or literal room for this... but the sculpts look great and FFGs app stuff has only gotten better.

allenkwest reacted to Shirys in Hmm. Yay?
I entirely agree with you.
I had the same problem with video games, so i can relate. I do tend to play video games less and less, replaced with board gaming time which i enjoy and get immersed into more.
Still, i never really felt like the use of an app like Road To Legend removed any of the magical feel into the game; i feel like it enhanced, or even brought a new interesting approach to it. The same magic i felt as a teenager while playing Advanced D&D (1st Ed) by myself with my own boundless imagination, the excitement of discovery after you tap a door and the app tells you to setup this tile and that tile, with this many monster and terrain features, plus a potential special event. Paper and cardboard can't come up with that except with some random card mechanic and thick adventure books who keep piling up as new expansions get released - though i admit, i'd perfectly fine with that too. I did collect everything from Descent 1st and 2nd Ed and i DO enjoy the adventure books, cards and even the older, overly complex, brought out of the bat Road To Legend campaign system from 1st Ed with just too much stuff to keep track of! I am neither pro nor anti app driven games, as long as it is well integrated into the game, which seems to also be the case with Descent:LotD.
They obviously appear to have put a lot of effort into the development of this app and, from what i've heard in their recent Twitch stream, there will be good amount of side quests too! Plenty of things to do outside the main quest line, as they said. Also apparently, you'll have the ability to interact with 3D terrain, such as climbing trees, or topple a stone column on a monsters, or use it as a bridge over a gap!
Why not?
There are types of games, or mechanics which i don't enjoy such as card drafting or semi-coop games; Still, i accept them being on the market. You not enjoying it doesn't mean others don't.

allenkwest reacted to Aerexx in Hmm. Yay?
We all knew it was going to be app driven co-op only game. Which is fantastic. I wish people would stop reiterating on that. But the art work, tiles and 3D objects along with the MSRP...175 USD lol...I have no words. But hey the app sounds really well done and the minis look great. But over all pretty disappointing especially with that price. I really wish they would keep reprinting 2nd ed big box expansions for those of us who are still interested.

allenkwest reacted to Shirys in Hmm. Yay?
Okay...
Sorry, but i just can't agree with you on any points here, though i understand it's mainly a matter of taste and personal opinion.
I think this is the future of boardgames and most people will really enjoy it, some others won't as much.
Just give it time will you? more will be revealed soon.
Personally, i find it all very exciting 😃
