  1. Ok, I think I've got the answer I need. I'll work on finishing LiTW this week then get to work on Twilight Omens, working some on Culdwell Horror whenever I get bored (I have issues with that). Thanks for your replies!

  2. Ok, I have a ton of projects underway at the moment, all of them I would like to finish at some point. However, I also like contributing to the community, so while it doesn't matter to me which expansion gets finished first, I'd rather go with those that other people might enjoy as well. Here are the current list of expansions I'm working on:

Twilight Omens: This set will work to expand the role of the Silver Twilight Lodge and also make heavy use of Corinthian's Day/Night mechanic. Special events will be linked to the Cross symbol (similar to events in Lost In The Woods being linked to Hexagon) and Twilight Lodge Members will have access to powerful abilities if they choose to invest in them.

Untitled (Deputy): This set expands the role of the Deputy in arkham, with leads and eventually the acquisition of powerful tools to counteract the mythos. There will also be Crimes that occur throughout the city, many mythos related but some totally mundane. These crimes will provide minor obstacles that can accumulate over time if left unchecked. Also, Arrested will be a oft used mechanic.

Untitled (Nyarlathotep): A set dedicated entirely to Nyarlathotep, The Crawling Chaos. There will be 10 brand new Heralds, all related to Nyarly and his avatars, as well as 2 new GOOs similarly linked. Additionally, there will be special Plot of Nyarlathotep cards that enter play very rarely but can have a massive impact. When these cards are first draw, the investigators must decide to negate them (At great cost) or let them enter play permanently.

The Sands Below: A set with a new map that links to the Black Cave, but will also link to other locations in further expansions. It stresses 'quest-like' events that arise which require investigators to traverse the underground desert and complete various tasks. The cost in time is great, but so are the rewards. This set will also feature a decent number of new Exhibit items.

Untitled (Dimensions): This set will focus primarily on otherworlds and include a new map for precisely this purpose. This is the least developed set, so I don't have much else to say about it.

Culdwell Horror: Very close to completion, but I keep putting it off. This is a standalone map that takes place in the small mining community of Culdwell. It is a very claustrophobic, high-stakes kind of game, very cutthroat. Pharol The Black weighs heavily upon the action as a brand new GOO with a twist, as does a rather sadistic new Guardian.

The Besieged Kingdom: A mammoth standalone expansion with a pseudo-medieval fantasy vibe, albeit in a lovecraftian tone. There are three brand new maps, five GOOs, 2 each of Heralds and Guardians and a host of brand new cards in all categories. It basically plays like a totally different game, emphasising character development and exploration (Especially through the other worlds). There are a few main victory conditions, with sealing being toned down heavily in usefulness. I'd say I'm about a third of the way through this beast.

Untitled (Atoll/Ocean): The third standalone expansion, with it's own map set in the ocean. Links several of my own short stories together in a manner similar to the base game, though a bit more focused and cogent. Underwater exploration plays a big role, as do alternate win conditions.

So there you go. I'm going to work on finalizing Lost In The Woods and finish off The Thing (I need to post those heralds...), then I'm going to buckle down on whatever people seem to think sounds cool. Any votes?

I have in my projects (I always have many projects, but they are not always finished or even begun) an extension with a Mesopotamian theme (I got bored of the inevitable Egyptian theme, though I really enjoy it (and I should: I studied Egyptology at the university)). Those of you who are fans of the call of Cthulhu RPG (by Chaosium, the only true Cthulhu-RPG) may remember that it was said therein that the name Cthulhu comes from some language in that area of the world. Knowing the malevolent deities that dwelled in the mesopotamian minds, there's clearly something interesting to be done. For the Exorcist movie fans, they know that it all began in Mesopotamia by the finding of a demon's statuette...

Concerning the mechanics of the expansion, there will be a use of the old Mesopotamian Calendar, which had some months of ill omen demonio.gif. I guess of new board is also needed, though I'm not still quite sure as to why the investigators should make an Arkham-Babylon trip...

As I've said above, there's still nothing done, but I'm pretty confident I will at least begin work on it soon. happy.gif

You could simply make it a stand alone expansion/board. I have three such projects in the works (Don't expect them anytime soon, I work too sporadically) and it looks like it works on paper. Tons of work though, hehe.

As long as Corbitt is alive he will be a constant threat. Each time a Mythos card calls for his movement he instead summons a Dimensional Shambler (following normal monster placement rules). If there are no gates or available Shamblers then nothing happens.

Heh, not even out and I already have questions. Are the Dimensional Shamblers considered Spawn monsters or are they subject to the monster limit and being taken as trophies?

At the moment, other than the Shamblers being put aside for Corbitt's summoning ability, they are still subject to normal monster placement rules, can be taken as trophies and count towards the monster limit.  I have been toying with the idea of making them spawn monsters or something similar, but I'll look into that later.

I think it would be worth looking into, otherwise the threat posed seems too minimal to warrant serious attention being given to the house, which would be a shame. As an alternative, perhaps some sort of penalty is triggered if Walter cannot summon a Shambler... less than a Terror or Doom increase, but something similar.

When the monster cup empties, the game is over, that's not indirect at all. However, like with the Dangerous Experiment, you could push things very close to that limit. For example, if you took a number of Monsters out of the cup equal to the number of Investigators and then used them as the new Monster Cup for example - you would have exactly enough monsters for one monster surge before the game ended (better kill monsters and spend their trophies fast, eh?)

You could also present new challenges to the players. For example, you could just fill in one of the Kingsport Rift tracks and make that rift uncloseable for the rest of the game.

    -Frank

Actually the game would end when the cup is empty and a monster needs to be drawn, not just when it is empty. I kind of like that as a fail condition, it really demands attention which is what I've always seen rumors as, dangerous distractions.

    Sounds and looks great!aplauso.gif

Just a thought: shouldn't the locations be unstable (i.e. with a red diamond instead of a green one)?

Bah, I knew I was forgetting something when redesigning it. They shouldn't be unstable, as they don't start with clues and mythos cards don't open gates there, but they also shouldn't be stable... I think yellow diamonds would work to get the 'possibility of gate' idea across.

Sigh... I'll have it up later today, haha.

    Great analysis, Dumon!  Thanks!

While Cthulhu may not be as powerful as other Great Old Ones, the Message, he is still a Great Old One; Dagon is not.

Depends on sources, but you're right, in canon he is not generally thought of in that way. There is however the theory that Dagon is Cthulhu himself, just worshipped under a name more familiar (Which would render this discussion rather pointless, hehe), and there are other times in which Dagon is depicted in much the same many as the Great Old Ones and Outer Gods, being a mass of writhing tentacles and maddness inducing 'what-have-you's. I prefer the last of these interpretations but the community at large does not seem to see it that way.

  9. Southside Strangler already gives -1 Max Sanity (Or Stamina), so while that's more focused it isn't very original. A big Sanity loss is cool, but not too hard to recover from. Maybe closing some crucial locations, such as the hospital and asylum? That could be fatal and thus mid-high difficulty. You could also try tying some of the mechanics of your expansion in, though I'm not yet familiar with what those may be.

  10. Ok, second play just finished, this time against Chernobog. It was actually one of the better games I've played, in that neither side had a clear advantage at any point. We finally got our 6th seal while he was 4 from waking and Good Work Undone was about to fail.

This play was with the change to the Woods Event symbol trigger, which is that it only fires on Hexagon, not both Hexagon and Moon. This seems to have helped a ton, since we got more Woods Events but they were spread out over far more turns. It never felt like they were drowning us in effects, just that they provided a little more tension and pressure. Gerald and Mother Grey actually had to willing get Lost In The Woods in order to take out a few particularly nasty cards, but were then stuck on The Woods map for 4-5 turns before finding encounters that sent them back.

Speaking of the map, it got significantly more use this game. Two gates actually opened there (I should change the location colors. They aren't unstable, but calling them stable is misleading...) and loads of monsters showed up, mostly from Woodland Whisperings. This made things more interesting for investigators who ended up over there, as they actually had some challenges to face. However, what this really lead me to realize is that my map is totally absurd. Seriously, I must have had Azathoth telling me what to do or something, because none of the monster movement arrows make sense. I'm going to go fix that right after this and It'll be up today, but until then... woops.

That's about it, really. Chernobog was actually really fun to play against, which is strange cause he looked too strong on paper. His main ability kicked in several times (Once it had a huge 4 mythos card streak due to monster surge chains) and was definantly threatening but somehow never came across as unbearable. His cultists popped up a few times and gave us some curses, which was actually refreshing since I don't get those often these days. He didn't wake up of course, so I didn't get to see how hard his battle is, but I can certainly guess...

Oh, and Malign Creations are now officially my most aggravating monster. One sat in the Sheldon Gang Outpost and manged to open 2 gates and cause at least 3 monster surges during the game. Luckily they lose a lot of steam once you get a bunch of seals in place, but in the mid-game they can be rough.

looks interesting so far, but what is a DOOM check?

oh, and not all of the pictures are working yet btw

A Doom check is a check made using the Doom track's current value (For example, Nyarlathotep is at 6 tokens, so your check would be 6 dice plus any modifiers). Terror checks are made the same way but using the current terror level.

Surely one of them must be Dagon, no?

Is a single-sheet "Father Dagon and Mother Hydra" out of the question?

To answer your questions, no, one of them must not be Dagon, and yes, that is out of the question :)

Seriously, Dagon and Hyrda are only super Deep Ones, nothing more, so it would be completely inapprorpriate to have them as AO's.  I'm fairly certain, however, that the two Heralds are Dagon and Hyrdra, and if we're lucky we'll get at least one five toughness monster chit of one of them.

Technically Cthulhu isn't that big a deal either, he's just really overhyped. I do think you're right about them being the heralds, but I'd prefer at least Dagon to be a GOO.

Thank you, the Message!  I remembered that there was an Ancient One who was affiliated with magical dust in some way, but I couldn't think of his name.  Perhaps you could explain to myself and everyone else the details about Quachil Uttaus and dust?

Quite welcome! Quachil Uttaus is a being associated with time, dust and decay, which resembles a dessicated fetus. You can read the short story "The Treader of the Dust" here (Though the punctuation is atrocious...): http://www.eldritchdark.com/writings/short-stories/222/the-treader-of-the-dust

I'd guess that the Dust Cards would be some sort of penalty that the players can draw, perhaps lowering their speed and combat ability.

  14. It sounds like an awkward wording of delayed, so you would just be unable to move (Other than standing up) and would have another encounter. If an effect caused you to move, I don't think it would have any effect on your spell acquisition, which would have occured instantly (Unless I'm reading that wrong).

The exact wording would be extremely helpful, as the tiniest difference in phrasing can carry huge consequences in a game like this.

    Hello MESSAGE -

Perhaps, an investigator that joins the cult can choose to go to the Woods or Lost in the Woods location.   I don't know what events are going to occur in the Lost Woods, but if they are beneficial a cult member could take advantage of it, and if they are nasty they might be able to disarm the effect.

If you add in the custom rule that all hexagon monsters are elusive to a cult member, a cult member might have plenty of reasons to explore the darker corners of the woods.

There is one Woods Event that let's you join the cult, but other than that I'm trying to stay away from too much black goat material because sadly I do not yet have it. Perhaps I'll give Cult members a discount to remove Events, which is both thematic and helpful.

  16. And now I'm even more interested. Are the events triggered by something or are they in place of encounters? The evidence mechanic looks like it could work well. Do the tokens start in play or do you gain them through events? Walter actually seems rather tame, unless you fail the Domination check, but experience could prove otherwise.

If I had to guess, I would say the Dust is related to an Ancient One or the Innsmouth Look Deck.  There aren't enough counters, assuming the number is correct, for it to be a measure of corruption of the Investigators; or too many counters if each can only have 1.

My guess would be the Dust can only be removed by drawing from the Look Deck, and has some detremental effect on the Investigators for the Dust just being there.  Maybe the Dust causes you to suffer penalties for being at the same location.
Sounds great ... who ever goes to Innsmouth becomes a Maid in order to clean up the town.

    Quachil Uttaus perhaps?

I just really want Chaugnar Faugn, and I was afraid it wouldn't happen because Kingsport has already been released.  But with EIGHT...maybe...

You know, I've never really like Chaugnar Faugn, but a lot of other people seem to. The demand is probably high enough to make it likely that he's in there.

Dagon and Hydra will probably be there, but they could be Heralds. Ubbo-Sathla also seems like a decent choice. Personally, I'd like Tru-Nembra and Daoloth to be included.
