Hi there. First time Poster here!

I am running my first game soon and we are using a combination of both the updated beta rules and the beginner game rules. Basically we use the beta for custom character creation vs the pre-generated characters and also use the beta book for force rules as one of the players wants to be force sensitive. We use the beginner game rules for everything else as the beginner game teaches the basic rules progressively.

Since force users have to take force exile as a non-career specialization my question is this:

Do player characters have to take a career specialisation during character creation before you can take a non-career specialization? For example: Player rolls up a Smuggler and instead of taking Pilot as his specialisation he takes Force Exile. Can he do this? Or would he have to take Pilot (or whatever career specialisation he chooses) before taking Force Exile as his second?

Thanks!

Hi Thecableton, welcome to the forums.

Thats a good question and creating a Force Exile can be kind of confusing.  During character creation, you have to select a career, and a specialization within that career.  Since the Force Exile spec is considered a "universal specialization" and not associated with any career, you can't select it as your starting specialization.   So in your example above, a Smuggler would have to choose a Smuggler specialization, like Pilot, Scoundrel, or Slicer.  The Force Exile spec is not a valid choice there.  I think this is articulated in the Beta text (beta notes indicate pg 176)

However, there is another rule (beta patch notes, pg 12, "Becoming force sensitive")  that states that purchasing universal specializations always cost the same as purchasing career specializations (10 times # of character's specializations after the purchase).  Although this doesn't seem to sync with how it was initially described by FFG_Sam Stewart here (post #36) who also indicated that it had to be your second specialization to get the lower cost.  Maybe this was a change following the week 8 posting.

So basically, yes, Force Exile cannot be selected as a starting specialization.  It must be at least your second specialization, and must be purchased for XP.  Hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the welcome and the very eloquent responce there, LethalDose!

This was incredibly helpful and hopefully my would-be force user won't rage too hard at the fact he has to wait a little while before his 'awakening' as a force sensitive.

Thanks again!

Why does he have to wait a while? Depending on his race he has between 90 and 110XP to spend during character creation. He can use that XP to purchase the Force Exile Specialization and purchase Talents in it with that XP.

Edit - Nevermind it seems there is nothing saying you can only have one specialization at character creation in either the beta book or the updates.

I think LethalDose was including the starting XP budget that all characters get.  He's just clarifying for the OP that when you build a character, you can't choose Force Exile as your "free" specialization since it's not attached to any of the careers.  So in that respect, you can't "start" as a Force Exile, you have to spend at least 20 of your character's starting XP in order to pick it up (assuming it's your second spec).

??? I wasn't questioning LethalDose. I was responding to "thecableton" and his thinking the player would have to wait until later to get access to the Jedi Exile.
