Overcharge packs

Under the weapons upgrades section, overcharge packs are offered as they will increase the damage of each shot by 1, while reducing the clip size to half capacity.

why would you ever use them when a M36 lasgun (and most las weapons) has the same option built in? Is it a hold-over from previous editions where las guns did not ahve a variable power setting, or can it be used in conjunction with the M36 option? essintially doing 2 more damage and quartering the clip size?

I believe it's a holdover but by the rules I don't see why it wouldn't stack with the variable lasgun setting.
